The paradoxical nature of this trait

ئەم سروشتە دژیەکە

was personified for the ancient Greeks

لە کەسایەتییەکی کۆنی گریکەکان کۆدەبێتەوە

in the mythical figure of Pandora.

بە ناوی ئەفسانەی پانادۆرا.

According to legend,

بە پیی ئەفسانەکان،

she was the first mortal woman,

ئەو یەکەم ژنی مرۆڤ دەبێت،

whose blazing curiosity set a chain of earth-shattering events in motion.

کە کارە زانخوازییەکەی چەندین ڕوداو بە دوای خۆیدا دەهێنێت،

Pandora was breathed into being by Hephaestus, God of fire,

پەنادۆرا لە لایەن خواوەندی ئاگر، هيفايستوس روحی پێ دەبەخشرێت،

who enlisted the help of his divine companions to make her extraordinary.

بە هاوکاری هاوەڵەکانی هێزی تایبەتی پێ دەبەخشن.

From Aphrodite she received the capacity for deep emotion;

from Hermes she gained mastery over language.

لە هێرمیس، زیرەکی و فێربوونی زمانی بۆ دەمێنێتەوە،

Athena gave the gift of fine craftsmanship and attention to detail,

لە ئەسینا، دەست ڕەنگینی و وردبوونەوەی بۆ دەمێنێتەوە،

and Hermes gave her her name.

هێرمیس ناوی پانادۆرای پێدەبەخشێت.

Finally, Zeus bestowed two gifts on Pandora.

زیۆس دوو دیاری دەبەخشێتە پانەدۆرا.

The first was the trait of curiosity,

دیاری یەکەم، زانخوازییە،

which settled in her spirit and sent her eagerly out into the world.

کە لە ناخی جێگیر دەبێت و بە زەویدا دەگەڕێت.

The second was a heavy box, ornately curved, heavy to hold –

دیاری دووەم، سندوقێکی قورسی نەخشێنراو

and screwed tightly shut.

کە بە باشی داخراو دەبێت.

But the contents, Zeus told her, were not for mortal eyes.

بەڵام هەر شتێک لە ناو سندوقەکەیە بۆ چاوی مرۆڤ ناشێت، زیوس ئاگاداری دەکاتەوە.

She was not to open the box under any circumstance.

پێویست بوو بە هیچ جۆرێک نەکرێتەوە.

On earth, Pandora met and fell in love with Epimetheus, a talented titan

لە سەر زەوی، پانادۆرە دەکەوێتە خۆشەویستی لەگەڵ تایتانی لێهاتوو ئبيمتيوس

who had been given the task of designing the natural world by Zeus.

کە ئەرکی دیزاینکردنی سروشتی زەوی لە لایەن زیۆسەوە پێ سپێردرا بوو.

He had worked alongside his brother Prometheus,

لەگەڵ براکەی پرۆمیسیوس ئیشیان دەکرد،

who created the first humans

کە یەکەم مرۆڤ دروست دەکات

but was eternally punished for giving them fire.

بەڵام تاهەتایە سزادەدرێت بەهۆی دزینی ئاگر.

Epimetheus missed his brother desperately,

ئبيمتيوس بێ هیوایانە بیری براکەی دەکرد،

but in Pandora he found another fiery-hearted soul for companionship.

بەڵام پاندۆرا ئەم بێهیواییەی خامۆش دەکاتەوە.

Pandora brimmed with excitement at life on earth.

پانەدۆڕا بە دڵخۆشی و سەرسامانە بە زەویدا دەگەڕا.

She was also easily distracted and could be impatient,

بەڵام زۆر بە سانایی سەرنجی بۆ شتەکان دەچوو و بێ ئارام دەبوو،

given her thirst for knowledge and desire to question her surroundings.

پرسیاری لە هەموو شتێکی دەوروبەری خۆی دەکرد بۆ ئەوەی دەربارەی هەموو شتێک بزانێت.

Often, her mind wandered to the contents of the sealed box.

زۆربەی جار، مێشکی بە ناوەڕۆکی سندوقەکەوە سەر قاڵ دەبوو.

What treasure was so great it could never be seen by human eyes,

ئەم گەنجینەیە دەبێت چی بێت کە چاوی مرۆڤ نابێت سەیری بکات،

and why was it in her care?

بۆچی زیۆس بە ئەوی بەخشیوە.

Her fingers itched to pry it open.

پەنجەکانی تامەزرۆی کردنەوەی سندوقەکە بوون.

Sometimes she was convinced she heard voices whispering

جار جار دڵنیا بوو کە گوێبیستی دەنگە دەنگی ناو سندوقەکە دەبێت

and the contents rattling around inside,

ناوەڕۆکی سندوقەکە دێن و دەچن،

as if straining to be free.

وەک ئەوەی هەوڵ بدەن ئازاد بکرێن.

Its enigma became maddening.

ناڕونی بارودۆخی سندوقەکە پانەدۆرای شێت کردبوو.

Over time, Pandora became more and more obsessed with the box.

بە تێپەڕبوونی کات، پانەدۆرا زیاتر شێتی سندوقەکە و ناوەڕۆکەکەی دەبێت،

It seemed there was a force beyond her control that drew her to the contents,

وەک ئەوەی هێزێکی دەرەکی هانی بدات بۆ ئەوەی زیاتر خولیای بێت ،

which echoed her name louder and louder.

کە ناوی بەرزتر و بەرزتر دەهێنا.

One day she could bear it no longer.

ڕۆژێک ئارامی نامێنێت.

Stealing away from Epimetheus,

خۆی لە ئبيمتيوس دەشارێتەوە،

she stared at the mystifying box.

سەیری سندوقە سەیرەکە دەکات.

She’d take one glance inside,

دەیویست سەیرێکی خێرای ناوی بکات،

then be able to rid her mind of it forever...

دواتر بۆ هەمیشە سەرنجی لە سەر ئەم سندوقە لاببات.

But at the first crack of the lid, the box burst open.

بەڵام لە یەکم چونە ناوەوەی ڕوناکی، سندوقەکە بە تەواوەتی کرایەوە.

Monstrous creatures and horrendous sounds

دەنگی کەمەرشکێن، و ئاژەڵی دڕندە ئاسا

rushed out in a cloud of smoke and swirled around her, screeching and cackling.

وەک هەورێکی دوکەڵدار هاتنە دەرەوە و لە دەوری پانەدۆرا کۆبوونەوە و هاواریان دەکرد.

Filled with terror,

ترسا و پەشۆکا،

Pandora clawed desperately at the air to direct them back into their prison.

پەنەدۆرا بێهویانە هەوڵی دەدا بیانخاتەوە ناو سندوقەکە و زیندانییان بکات.

But the creatures surged out in a gruesome cloud.

بەڵام زیندەوەرەکان ڕێگەی هاتنە دەرەوەیان دۆزییەوە و وەک هەور دەهاتنە دەرێ.

She felt a wave of foreboding as they billowed away.

لە کاتی دەرچوونی دڕندەکان، هەستی بە هاتنی مەترسییەکی گەورە کرد.

Zeus had used the box as a vessel

زیۆس ئەم بۆکسەی وەک زیندان بۆ

for all the forces of evil and suffering he’d created –

ئەو ئاژەڵە دڕندانەی کە دروستی کردبوون بەکار هێنابوو

and once released,

هەر کاتێک ئازاد بکرێن،

they were uncontainable.

ناتوانرێت دووبارە زیندانی بکرێنەوە.

As she wept,

لە کاتی ڕشتنی فرمێسکدا،

Pandora became aware of a sound echoing from within the box.

پانەدۆڕا لە ناوەڕۆکی بۆکسەکە تێگەیشت.

This was not the eerie whispering of demons,

ئەمە سەدای ئەهریمەنی ترسهێنەر نەبوو،

but a light tinkling that seemed to ease her anguish.

بەڵام دەنگدانەوەی مێشکی بوو کە ئەو دەنگەی دروست دەکرد.

When she once again lifted the lid and peered in,

کاتێک جارێکیتر سەری سندوقەکەی کردەووە و سەیری ناوەوەی کرد،

a warm beam of light rose out and fluttered away.

ڕوناکییەکی کەم هاتە دەرەوە و دیار نەما.

As she watched it flickering in the wake of the evil she’d unleashed,

دوای ئازادکردنی ئەم ڕوناکییە کەمەی دوا ئازاد کردنی ئەم هەموو دڕندەیە،

Pandora’s pain was eased.

ئازاری نەختێک کەم بوویەوە.

She knew that opening the box was irreversible –

تێگەیشت، کە سندوقەکە بکرێتەوە، هیچ کاتێک وەک خۆی لێنایەتەوە

but alongside the strife, she’d set hope forth to temper its effects.

هاوشان لەگەڵ خەم و دڵتەنگییەکەی، هیوابەخشی بە هانای دەچوو بۆ کەم کردنەوە ئازارەکانی.

Today, Pandora’s Box suggests the extreme consequences

لە ڕۆژگاری ئەمڕۆدا، بۆکسەکەی پەنەدۆرا ئاماژەیە بۆ ئەگەری بوونی

of tampering with the unknown –

دەرئەنجامی نەزانراو لە کاتی یاریکردن بە ئاگر.

but Pandora’s burning curiosity also suggests the duality that lies

بەڵام زانخوازیبوونی پەنەدۆڕا بە هەمان شێوە ئاماژەیە بۆ دوو سروشتی

at the heart of human inquiry.

کە چەقی مرۆڤ بوونە.

Are we bound to investigate everything we don’t know,

ئایا پێویستە لە هەموو شتێکی نەزانراو بکۆڵینەوە،

to mine the earth for more –

بۆ هەڵقۆڵینی زەوی بۆ دەستکەوتنی زیاتر،

or are there some mysteries

یان هەندێک نهێنی هەیە

that are better left unsolved?

کەوا باشترە ئاشکرا نەکرێت؟
