who enlisted the help of his divine companions to make her extraordinary.

From Aphrodite she received the capacity for deep emotion;

from Hermes she gained mastery over language.

Athena gave the gift of fine craftsmanship and attention to detail,

Finally, Zeus bestowed two gifts on Pandora.

The first was the trait of curiosity,

Pandora brimmed with excitement at life on earth.

She was also easily distracted and could be impatient,

주변 환경에 대해 궁금한 것이 많아서

given her thirst for knowledge and desire to question her surroundings.

그것들을 알고 싶어서 기다릴 수가 없었죠.

Often, her mind wandered to the contents of the sealed box.

이따금씩 그녀는 봉인된 상자 안에 무엇이 들었는지 궁금했습니다.

What treasure was so great it could never be seen by human eyes,

얼마나 대단한 보물이기에 사람의 눈으로 보면 안 되는 건지

and why was it in her care?

왜 하필 그녀한테 이걸 맡긴 건지 궁금했죠.

Her fingers itched to pry it open.

살짝이라도 엿보고 싶어서 손가락이 근질거렸어요.

Sometimes she was convinced she heard voices whispering

가끔씩은 어떤 목소리가 그녀에게 속삭이는 것 같았죠.

and the contents rattling around inside,

상자 안의 내용물이 속에서 덜커덩거리며 나가고 싶어 안간힘을 쓰는 것 같았죠.

as if straining to be free.

Its enigma became maddening.

이 수수께끼는 판도라를 점점 미치게 만들었습니다.

Over time, Pandora became more and more obsessed with the box.

시간이 지날수록 판도라는 점점 더 상자에 집착하게 됐죠.

It seemed there was a force beyond her control that drew her to the contents,

마치 통제할 수 없는 힘이 그녀를 끌어당기는 것 같았어요.

which echoed her name louder and louder.

그녀의 이름을 크게 부르면서 말이죠.

One day she could bear it no longer.

어느 날, 그녀는 더 이상 참을 수 없었습니다.

Stealing away from Epimetheus,

에피메테우스에게서 훔친 그 신비로운 상자를 한참 바라보았죠.

she stared at the mystifying box.

She’d take one glance inside,

딱 한 번만 상자 안을 본 후에

then be able to rid her mind of it forever...

머릿속에서 영영 지울 생각이었죠.

But at the first crack of the lid, the box burst open.

그런데 뚜껑이 벌어지자 상자는 폭발하듯이 열렸습니다.

Monstrous creatures and horrendous sounds

괴생명체와 끔찍한 소리들이 연기와 함께 쏟아져 나와

rushed out in a cloud of smoke and swirled around her, screeching and cackling.

음산하게 웃으며 그녀 주위를 맴돌았어요.

Filled with terror,

겁에 질린 판도라는 허공에 팔을 휘저으며

Pandora clawed desperately at the air to direct them back into their prison.

그것들을 다시 감옥 안으로 넣으려고 애썼습니다.

But the creatures surged out in a gruesome cloud.

하지만 그 생명체들은 섬뜩한 연기와 함께 쏜살같이 사라졌죠.

She felt a wave of foreboding as they billowed away.

그들이 휩쓸고 간 자리에는 불길한 기운만이 남게 되었습니다.

Zeus had used the box as a vessel

제우스는 그 상자 속에

for all the forces of evil and suffering he’d created –

자신이 창조한 고통과 악한 힘을 가두어 두었던 것이었죠.

그것들은 한번 풀려나면 돌이킬 수 없었습니다.

and once released,

they were uncontainable.

As she wept,

판도라가 흐느끼고 있을 때 상자 안으로부터 메아리가 들려왔습니다.

Pandora became aware of a sound echoing from within the box.

This was not the eerie whispering of demons,

그런데 그건 악마의 으스스한 속삭임이 아니었죠.

but a light tinkling that seemed to ease her anguish.

그녀의 고통을 잠재우려는 듯이 빛이 반짝이고 있었습니다.

When she once again lifted the lid and peered in,

상자를 열어 다시 안을 들여다보자

a warm beam of light rose out and fluttered away.

따뜻한 빛줄기가 나와 공중으로 날아갔어요.

As she watched it flickering in the wake of the evil she’d unleashed,

악이 휩쓸고 간 자리에서 깜빡이고 있는 빛을 보자

Pandora’s pain was eased.

판도라의 괴로웠던 마음도 평안을 되찾았습니다.

She knew that opening the box was irreversible –

이미 열린 상자는 되돌릴 수 없다는 걸 알기에

but alongside the strife, she’d set hope forth to temper its effects.

그녀는 그 어려움 속에서 희망을 생각하기로 했죠.

Today, Pandora’s Box suggests the extreme consequences

오늘날, 판도라의 상자는

금기된 것을 만졌을 때 찾아올 심각한 결과를 의미합니다.

of tampering with the unknown –

but Pandora’s burning curiosity also suggests the duality that lies

하지만 판도라의 불타오르는 호기심은

인간의 호기심에 대한 또 다른 면을 보여주기도 하죠.

at the heart of human inquiry.

Are we bound to investigate everything we don’t know,

우리는 미지의 모든 것들을 알아내야 할까요?

to mine the earth for more –

더욱더 깊이 파고들면서요?

or are there some mysteries

아니면 어떤 비밀들은 풀리지 않은 채로 두는 게 나을까요?

that are better left unsolved?
