from Hermes she gained mastery over language.

Athena gave the gift of fine craftsmanship and attention to detail,

and Hermes gave her her name.

その名前を付けたのは ヘルメスでした

Finally, Zeus bestowed two gifts on Pandora.

そしてゼウスはパンドラに ２つのものを授けました

The first was the trait of curiosity,

which settled in her spirit and sent her eagerly out into the world.

The second was a heavy box, ornately curved, heavy to hold –

and screwed tightly shut.

But the contents, Zeus told her, were not for mortal eyes.

She was not to open the box under any circumstance.

On earth, Pandora met and fell in love with Epimetheus, a talented titan

地上で パンドラは エピメテウスと出会い 恋に落ちました

who had been given the task of designing the natural world by Zeus.

He had worked alongside his brother Prometheus,

エピメテウスは以前 兄のプロメテウスと働いてました

who created the first humans

but was eternally punished for giving them fire.

Epimetheus missed his brother desperately,

兄を失い エピメテウスは ひどく嘆きましたが

but in Pandora he found another fiery-hearted soul for companionship.

パンドラと情熱的に心と通わせることで 喪失感を埋めました

Pandora brimmed with excitement at life on earth.

地上で生活するパンドラの心は 興奮に満ち溢れていました

She was also easily distracted and could be impatient,

旺盛な知識欲と身近な物事への 強い探究心があり

given her thirst for knowledge and desire to question her surroundings.

抑えきれないそんな自分の欲求に いつも悩まされてもいました

Often, her mind wandered to the contents of the sealed box.

堅く閉ざされた箱の中身について 思いを巡らせることがよくありました

What treasure was so great it could never be seen by human eyes,

人間の目に触れてはいけないほど 素晴らしい宝とは何か

and why was it in her care?

なぜそれが自分の手元にあるのか

Her fingers itched to pry it open.

箱を開けて中をのぞきたくて 指がうずきました

Sometimes she was convinced she heard voices whispering

中からささやき声や 必死で外に出ようとしているような

and the contents rattling around inside,

ガタガタという音が聞こえたと

as if straining to be free.

確信することもありました

Its enigma became maddening.

その謎の箱は パンドラを狂わせんばかりの存在になりました

Over time, Pandora became more and more obsessed with the box.

時が経つほどに パンドラの頭から その箱のことが離れなくなりました

It seemed there was a force beyond her control that drew her to the contents,

箱の中で パンドラと呼ぶ声の こだまが日に日に大きくなり

which echoed her name louder and louder.

彼女を惹き付けるどうにも抵抗できない力が 存在するようでした

One day she could bear it no longer.

ある日 我慢が限界に達しました

Stealing away from Epimetheus,

エピメテウスがいない時

she stared at the mystifying box.

この謎の箱を見つめました

She’d take one glance inside,

中をひと目見たら

then be able to rid her mind of it forever...

永久にその悩ましい誘惑から 解放されるでしょう...

But at the first crack of the lid, the box burst open.

しかし 一筋割れ目が入った途端 箱は勢いよく開きました

Monstrous creatures and horrendous sounds

怪物や恐ろしい音が もうもうとした煙の

rushed out in a cloud of smoke and swirled around her, screeching and cackling.

中に渦巻き パンドラの周りで 甲高い咆哮をあげました

Filled with terror,

恐怖に震えながら

Pandora clawed desperately at the air to direct them back into their prison.

箱の中に戻して閉じ込めようと パンドラは必死にもがきましたが

But the creatures surged out in a gruesome cloud.

怪物たちは 不気味な暗い影の中に 次々と猛烈な勢いで飛び出してきました

She felt a wave of foreboding as they billowed away.

怪物たちが去って行き パンドラは悪い予感に苛まれました

Zeus had used the box as a vessel

ゼウスはその箱に

for all the forces of evil and suffering he’d created –

自らが作り出した全ての悪と苦しみを 入れていたのです

and once released,

ひとたび放たれると

they were uncontainable.

もう 封じ込めることは不可能でした

As she wept,

泣いていると

Pandora became aware of a sound echoing from within the box.

箱の中で音が響いていることに 気づきました

This was not the eerie whispering of demons,

悪魔たちの不気味なささやきではなく

but a light tinkling that seemed to ease her anguish.

苦悩を和らげてくれるような 明るい鈴の音でした

When she once again lifted the lid and peered in,

パンドラがもう一度 蓋を開け のぞきこむと

a warm beam of light rose out and fluttered away.

暖かな光線が湧き出し ふわりとただよいました

As she watched it flickering in the wake of the evil she’d unleashed,

悪を放ってしまった後で 光の揺らめきを目にし

Pandora’s pain was eased.

パンドラの痛みは和らぎました

She knew that opening the box was irreversible –

パンドラは 収拾のつかない事態を招いたのですが

but alongside the strife, she’d set hope forth to temper its effects.

この世に「災禍」を送り込んだだけでなく 「災禍」を和らげる「希望」も放ったのでした

Today, Pandora’s Box suggests the extreme consequences

現在 「パンドラの箱」と言うと 未知のものにみだりに手を出すと

of tampering with the unknown –

最悪の事態を招くということを 表しますが

but Pandora’s burning curiosity also suggests the duality that lies

パンドラの燃えるような好奇心は 人間の探究心が内包する 相対する２つの

at the heart of human inquiry.

性質を表すものでもあります

Are we bound to investigate everything we don’t know,

人は 足元をほじくり返し 未知の物事を全て究明すべきなのでしょうか

to mine the earth for more –

or are there some mysteries

それとも解明されないほうがよい謎も あるのでしょうか

that are better left unsolved?
