In 1956, during a diplomatic reception in Moscow,

Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev told Western Bloc ambassadors,

"My vas pokhoronim!"

"My vas pokhoronim!"

His interpreter rendered that into English as,

옆에 있던 통역사는 이것을 다음과 같이 통역했습니다.

"We will bury you!"

"당신들을 묻어버리겠어!"

This statement sent shockwaves through the Western world,

이것이 서구 세계에 큰 파장을 불러일으켰고

heightening the tension between the Soviet Union and the US

한창 냉전 중이던 소비에트 연방과

who were in the thick of the Cold War.

미국 간의 긴장이 고조됐습니다.

Some believe this incident alone set East/West relations back a decade.

이걸 계기로 서구와 동구권의 관계가 10년은 퇴보했다고 보는 이들도 있죠.

As it turns out, Khrushchev's remark was translated a bit too literally.

그런데 알고 보니 통역사가 너무 직역을 했던 겁니다.

Given the context, his words should have been rendered as,

문맥을 고려해서 다음과 같이 통역하면 좋았을 텐데 말이죠.

"We will live to see you buried,"

"당신들이 파묻힐 때까지 살아서 지켜보겠다."

meaning that Communism would outlast Capitalism,

즉, 공산주의가 자본주의보다 더 오래 살아남을 거란 뜻인데요

a less threatening comment.

이게 좀 덜 위협적인 표현이죠.

Though the intended meaning was eventually clarified,

결국 그 말에 담긴 진짜 의도가 뭔지는 밝혀졌지만

the initial impact of Khrushchev's apparent words

처음에 통역된 문장이 큰 파장을 불러일으켜

put the world on a path that could have led to nuclear armageddon.

하마터면 전 세계가 핵전쟁에 휘말릴 뻔했습니다.

So now, given the complexities of language and cultural exchange,

언어의 복합성과 문화 교류 측면을 고려할 때

how does this sort of thing not happen all the time?

Much of the answer lies with the skill and training of interpreters

For most of history, interpretation was mainly done consecutively,

But after the advent of radio technology,

In the simultaneous mode

interpreters instantaneously translate a speaker's words

Without pauses, those in the audience can choose the language

On the surface, it all looks seamless,

but behind the scenes,

to ensure every idea gets across as intended.

And that is no easy task.

It takes about two years of training for already fluent bilingual professionals

To get used to the unnatural task of speaking while they listen,

At some point, a second language is introduced.

Practicing in this way creates new neural pathways in the interpreter's brain,

and the constant effort of reformulation gradually becomes second nature.

Over time and through much hard work,

the interpreter masters a vast array of tricks to keep up with speed,

deal with challenging terminology,

and handle a multitude of foreign accents.

They may resort to acronyms to shorten long names,

choose generic terms over specific,

특정 단어가 아닌 일반적인 표현을 쓰거나

or refer to slides and other visual aides.

각종 시각 자료를 활용하기도 합니다.

They can even leave a term in the original language,

while they search for the most accurate equivalent.

보다 정확한 표현을 찾기 위해 노력하기도 하죠.

Interpreters are also skilled at keeping aplomb in the face of chaos.

통역사들은 혼란스러운 상황에서도 침착한 태도를 유지합니다.

Remember, they have no control over who is going to say what,

통역하는 곳에서 누가 어떤 말을 하게 될지 알 수 없을뿐더러

or how articulate the speaker will sound.

화자가 얼마나 정확한 표현을 할지도 예측하기 어렵거든요.

A curveball can be thrown at any time.

즉, 언제든 변화구가 날아올 수 있단 얘기죠.

Also, they often perform to thousands of people

수천 명이 있는 자리에서 통역하는 경우도 있고

and in very intimidating settings,

유엔 총회처럼 압박감이 큰 곳에서

like the UN General Assembly.

통역하는 경우도 있으니까요.

To keep their emotions in check,

they carefully prepare for an assignment,

reading voraciously about the subject matter,

Finally, interpreters work in pairs.

그리고 통역사들은 2인 1조로 일을 합니다.

While one colleague is busy translating incoming speeches in real time,

the other gives support by locating documents,

looking up words,

and tracking down pertinent information.

Because simultaneous interpretation requires intense concentration,

every 30 minutes, the pair switches roles.

Success is heavily dependent on skillful collaboration.

Language is complex,

언어란 복잡한 것이어서

and when abstract or nuanced concepts get lost in translation,

추상적인 표현이나 미묘한 내용이 제대로 전달되지 않으면

the consequences may be catastrophic.

As Margaret Atwood famously noted, "War is what happens when language fails."

Conference interpreters of all people are aware of that
