What makes a book a book?

چی یه کتاب را کتاب میکنه؟

Is it just anything that stores and communicates information?

آیا کتاب فقط چیزی برای ذخیره و ارائه‌ی اطلاعاته؟

Or does it have to do with paper,

یا فقط کاغذ و

binding,

صحافی و

font,

ink,

فونت و

جوهره؟

its weight in your hands,

یا سنگینیش روی دست،

the smell of the pages?

بوی صفحه‌هاش؟

Is this a book?

الان این یه کتابه؟

Probably not.

احتمالا نه.

But is this?

اما این یکی چی؟

To answer these questions,

برای پاسخ دادن به این سوال

we need to go back to the start of the book as we know it

باید برگردیم به سرآغاز تولد کتاب

and understand how these elements came together to make something

و بفهمیم چگونه این عناصر با هم جمع شدند تا چیزی رو بسازن

more than the sum of their parts.

The earliest object that we think of as a book is the codex,

قدیمیترین چیزی که ما به عنوان کتاب میدونیم نسخ خطیه،

a stack of pages bound along one edge.

But the real turning point in book history

اما نقطه عطف واقعیِ تاریخ کتاب

was Johannes Gutenberg's printing press in the mid-15th century.

ماشین چاپ یوهانس گیلبرت در اواسط قرن پانزدهم بود.

The concept of moveable type had been invented much earlier in Eastern culture,

مفهوم حروف چینی خیلی قبل تر در فرهنگ شرق اختراع شده بود،

but the introduction of Gutenberg's press had a profound effect.

Suddenly, an elite class of monks and the ruling class

یکباره طبقه ی راهبان نخبه و طبقه حاکم

no longer controlled the production of texts.

دیگه نمی تونستن تولید متون رو کنترل کنن.

Messages could spread more easily,

پیام‌ها آسان‌تر پراکنده می شد،

and copies could constantly be produced,

so printing houses popped up all over Europe.

بنابراین چاپخانه‌ها در سراسر اروپا سر دراوردن.

The product of this bibliographic boom is familiar to us in some respects,

محصول این رونق کتابی از برخی جنبه‌ها برای ما آشناست،

but markedly different in others.

اما در برخی جنبه ها هم کاملا غریبه.

The skeleton of the book is paper, type, and cover.

اسکلت کتاب از کاغذ، چاپ و جلد تشکیل شده.

More than 2000 years ago, China invented paper as a writing surface,

بیشتر از ۲٫۰۰۰ سال پیش، چین کاغذ رو به عنوان سطحی برای نوشتن اختراع کرد.

which was itself predated by Egyptian papyrus.

که البته قبلش پاپیروس مصری ها رو داشتیم.

However, until the 16th century,

Europeans mainly wrote on thin sheets of wood

and durable parchment made of stretched animal skins.

Eventually, the popularity of paper spread throughout Europe,

replacing parchment for most printings because it was less expensive in bulk.

Inks had been made by combining organic plant and animal dyes

with water or wine,

but since water doesn't stick to metal type,

use of the printing press required a change to oil-based ink.

استفاده از جوهرهای روغنی توی صنعت چاپ رایج شد.

Printers used black ink made of a mixture of lamp soot,

ناشرها از جوهر سیاهی استفاده می کردن که از ترکیبی از دوده ی لامپ،

turpentine,

تربانتین،

and walnut oil.

و روغن گردو درست می شد.

And what about font size and type?

اندازه ی فونت و حروف چطور؟

The earliest movable type pieces consisted of reversed letters

اولین قطعات حروف چینی از حروف برعکس تشکیل می شد

cast in relief on the ends of lead alloy stocks.

که روی قطعه های آلیاژ سربی حک شده بود.

They were handmade and expensive,

اونا دست ساز و گرون بودن

and the designs were as different as the people who carved their molds.

و هر کسی هر طرحی که دلش می خواست روی حروفِ دست ساز خودش می زد.

Standardization was not really possible until mass manufacturing

استانداردسازی امکان پذیر نبود تا وقتی که تولید عمده

and the creation of an accessible word processing system.

و ایجاد یه سیستم پردازنده ی کلمه‌ی راحت انجام بشه.

As for style, we can thank Nicolas Jenson for developing two types of Roman font

در مورد سبک هم باید از نیکولاس جِنسون ممنون باشیم که دو نوع فونت رومَن رو

that led to thousands of others,

که به هزارات فونت دیگه منتهی شد،

including the familiar Times Roman.

مثل تامیز رومن، تدوین کرد.

Something had to hold all this together,

یه چیزی باید همه ی اینا رو کنار هم نگه می داشت.

and until the late 15th century,

و تا اواخر قرن ۱۵،

covers consisted of either wood,

جلدها یا چوبی بودن،

or sheets of paper pasted together.

یا چندتا برگه که به هم چسب زده شده بودن.

These would eventually be replaced by rope fiber millboard,

آخرسر اینا با مقواهای فیبری جایگزین شدن،

originally intended for high quality bindings in the late 17th century,

که البته در اصل برای صحافی های باکیفیت تو اواخر قرن ۱۷ استفاده می شد،

but later as a less expensive option.

اما بعدا ارزونتر شد.

And while today's mass produced cover illustrations are marketing tools,

و در حالی که طرح روی جلدِ امروزی یه ابزار بازاریابی به حساب میان،

the cover designs of early books were made to order.

طرح جلد کتاب های قدیمی سفارشی بودن.

Even spines have a history.

حتی عطف کتاب هم تاریخچه ی خودشو داره.

Initially, they were not considered aesthetically important,

اولا عطف اهمیت زیبایی شناختی نداشت.

and the earliest ones were flat, rather than rounded.

و نمونه های اولیه ساف بودن نه گرد.

The flat form made the books easier to read

صاف بودن عطف خوندن کتابو آسونتر می کرد

by allowing the book to rest easily on a table.

چون می شد راخت اونو روی میز گذاشت.

But those spines were damaged easily from the stresses of normal use.

ولی این عطف ها بعد از کمی استفاده به راحتی صدمه می دیدن.

A rounded form solved that issue,

عطف خمیده این مسئله رو حل کرد،

although new problems arose,

ولی مشکلای جدید درست شد،

like having the book close in on itself.

مثلا کتاب خود به خود بسته می شد!

But flexibility was more important,

ولی انعطاف پذیری مهمتر بود،

especially for the on-the-go reader.

مخصوصا برای اونایی که توی راه هم کتاب می خونن.

As the book evolves and we replace bound texts

با تکامل کتاب و جایگزین شدنِ متون صحافی شده

with flat screens and electronic ink,

با صفحات مسطح و جوهر الکترونیکی

are these objects and files really books?

واقعا میشه گفت این اشیا و فایل ها کتاب هستن؟

Does the feel of the cover

آیا حسِ جلد کتاب و

or the smell of the paper add something crucial to the experience?

بوی برگه ها، چیزی به تجربه ی کتابخوانی اضافه می کردن؟

Or does the magic live only within the words,

یا این جادو فقط توی کلمات نهفته،

no matter what their presentation?

و نحوه ی ارائه اش اهمیتی نداره؟
