له‌ تاریكیدا چرپاندی،

Whispered in the dark,

this question begins a tale of conspiracy, deception and moral ambiguity.

ئه‌م پرسیاره‌ سه‌ره‌تای چیڕۆكێكی پیلانگێڕان، فێڵ و ته‌مومژی ئه‌خلاقییه‌.

And in a play where everyone has something to hide,

و له‌ شانۆیه‌كدا كه‌ هه‌موو كه‌سێك شتێكی شاراوه‌ی هه‌یه‌،

its answer is far from simple.

وه‌ڵامه‌كه‌ی زۆر ئاڵۆزه‌.

Written by William Shakespeare between 1599 and 1601,

له‌ لایه‌ن ویڵیام شه‌یكسپیر له‌ نێوان ساڵانی 1599 و 1601 نووسراوه‌،

"Hamlet" depicts its titular character haunted by the past,

"هاملێت" وێنه‌ی كه‌سێتییه‌ ناوداره‌كه‌ی ده‌كات كه‌ به‌ ڕابردوو به‌ستراوه‌ته‌وه‌،

but immobilized by the future.

به‌ڵام ناتوانێت هیچ بكات له‌باره‌ی داهاتووه‌وه‌.

Mere months after the sudden death of his father,

ته‌نیا چه‌ند مانگێك دوای كۆچی له‌ناكاوی باوكی،

Hamlet returns from school a stranger to his own home,

هاملێت وه‌كو نه‌ناسراوێك له‌ قوتابخانه‌ بۆ ماڵه‌كه‌ی خۆی ده‌گه‌ڕێته‌وه‌،

and deeply unsure of what might be lurking in the shadows.

زۆر نادڵنیایه‌ له‌وه‌ی ڕه‌نگه‌ له‌ تاریكیدا خۆی حه‌شاردابێت.

But his brooding takes a turn

به‌ڵام مه‌راقه‌كه‌ی ده‌گۆڕێت

when he’s visited by a ghost that bears his father’s face.

كاتێك له‌ لایه‌ن تارماییه‌كه‌وه‌ سه‌ردانی ده‌كرێت كه‌ له‌ شێوه‌ی باوكیه‌تی

The phantom claims to be the victim of a “murder most foul,”

تارماییه‌كه‌ بانگه‌شه‌ی ئه‌وه‌ ده‌كات كه‌ قوربانی ده‌ستی" چه‌په‌ڵترین كوشتنه‌،"

and convinces Hamlet that his uncle Claudius usurped the throne

باوه‌ڕ به‌ هاملێت ده‌هێنیت كه‌ كڵاودییه‌سی مامی ده‌سه‌ڵاتی داگیر كردوە

and stole queen Gertrude’s heart.

و دڵی گێرترودی شاژنی دزیوه‌.

The prince’s mourning turns to rage,

شیوه‌نی میر بۆ تووڕه‌یی ده‌گۆڕێت،

and he begins to plots his revenge

ده‌ست ده‌كات به‌ پلان دانان بۆ تۆڵه‌ كردنه‌وه‌

on the new king and his court of conspirators.

له‌ پاشای نوێ و داروده‌سته‌كه‌ی.

The play is an odd sort of tragedy,

شانۆیه‌كه‌ جۆرێكی نامۆی تراژیدیایه‌،

lacking either the abrupt brutality or all-consuming romance

هه‌ر یه‌كه‌ له‌ دڕنده‌یی له‌ناكاو یاخود دڵدارییی ته‌واو له‌ناوبه‌ری كه‌مه‌

that characterize Shakespeare’s other work in the genre.

كه‌ كاره‌كانی تری شه‌یكسپیرله‌و جۆره‌ ئه‌ده‌بییه‌ جیا ده‌كاته‌وه‌.

Instead it plumbs the depths of its protagonist’s indecisiveness,

له ‌بری ئه‌وه‌ به‌ وردی له‌ راڕاییه‌كانی پاڵه‌وانه‌كه‌ ده‌كۆڵێته‌وه‌،

and the tragic consequences thereof.

و له‌ ده‌ره‌نجامه‌ تراژدییه‌كانیشی.

The ghost’s revelation draws Hamlet into multiple dilemmas–

ده‌ركه‌وتنی تارماییه‌كه‌ دوو ئه‌وه‌نده‌ كێشه‌ بۆ هاملێت زیاد ده‌كات-

what should he do, who can he trust,

پێویسته‌ چی بكات، متمانه‌ به‌ كێ بكات،

and what role might he play in the course of justice?

ئه‌و ڕۆڵانه‌ چین كه‌ ده‌یانگێڕێت له‌ ڕێڕه‌وی دادپه‌روه‌ری؟

These questions are complicated by a tangled web of characters,

ئه‌م پرسیارانه‌ له ‌لایه‌ن چه‌ند كه‌سایه‌تی یه‌كی تێکەڵاو قورس كراون،

forcing Hamlet to negotiate friends, family,

زۆر له‌ هاملێت ده‌كه‌ن وتووێژ به‌ هاوڕێ، خێزان،

court counselors, and love interests–

ڕاوێژكارانی دادگا، و حه‌زكارانی به‌رژه‌وه‌ندی-

many of whom possess ulterior motives.

The prince constantly delays and dithers over how to relate to others,

and how he should carry out revenge.

له‌گه‌ڵ ئه‌وانیتر، چۆنیه‌تی تۆڵه‌كردنه‌وه‌ی.

This can make Hamlet more than a little exasperating,

وا له‌ هاملێت ده‌كات زیاتر وه‌ك كه‌مێك تووڕه‌ بێته‌ به‌رچاو،

but it also makes him one of the most human characters Shakespeare ever created.

به‌ڵام ده‌شیكاته‌ یه‌ك له‌ هه‌ره‌ كه‌سایه‌ تییه‌ مرۆڤیه‌كان كه‌ شه‌یكسپیر دایهێناون.

Rather than rushing into things,

له‌بری په‌له ‌كردن له‌ شته‌كان،

Hamlet becomes consumed with the awful machinations of thinking itself.

هاملێت به‌ده‌ست پلانه‌ خراپه‌كانی بیركردنه‌وه‌ گرفتار ده‌بێت.

And over the course of the play,

له‌ ته‌واوی شانۆگه‌رییه‌كه‌،

his endless questions come to echo throughout our own racing minds.

پرسیاره‌ نه‌بڕاوه‌كانی له‌ مێشكمان ده‌نگ ده‌ده‌نه‌وه‌.

To accomplish this,

بۆ به‌ده‌ست هێنانی ئه‌مه‌،

Shakespeare employs his most introspective language.

شه‌یكسپیر زمانه‌ هه‌ره‌ ته‌نیایی خوازه‌كه‌ی به‌كار دێنێت.

From the usurping king’s blazing contemplation of heaven and hell,

له‌ پێشبینی پاشا داگیركه‌ره‌كه‌ بۆ به‌هه‌شت و دۆزه‌خ،

to the prince’s own cackling meditation on mortality,

بۆهیوای میره‌كه‌ بۆ چاره‌كردنی ڕێژه‌ی مردووان.

شه‌یكسپیر تاكدوانییی خه‌مبار به‌كار دێنێت بۆ كاریگه‌ریی زۆر جوان و خۆش. ڕه‌نگه‌

Shakespeare uses melancholic monologues to breathtaking effect.

This is perhaps best exemplified in Hamlet’s most famous declaration of angst:

ئه‌مه‌ باشترین نموونه‌ بێت له‌ به‌ناو- بانگترین لێدوانی هاملیت له‌سه‌ر بێتاقه‌تی:

"To be or not to be—that is the question:

"ببم یاخود نا--ئه‌مه‌ پرسیاره‌كه‌یه‌:

Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer

ئایا ڕاستتره‌ بۆ هزر كه‌

The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,

مه‌نجه‌نیق و تیره‌كانی سامانی خراپ بچێژێت،

Or to take arms against a sea of troubles

یاخود چه‌ك هه‌ڵگرێت دژی ده‌ریایه‌ك له‌ كێشه‌

And, by opposing, end them."

و، له‌ ڕێگه‌ی به‌رهه‌ڵستی، كۆتاییان پێبێنێت."

This monologue personifies Hamlet’s existential dilemma:

ئه‌م تاكدوانییه‌ به‌رجه‌سته‌ی كێشه‌ی هه‌بوونی هاملێت ده‌كات:

كه‌ له ‌نێوان ژیان و كردار پارچه‌ پارچه‌ بووه‌،

being torn between thought and action,

unable to choose between life and death.

ناتوانێت له‌ نێوان ژیان و مردن هه‌لبژێرێت.

But his endless questioning raises yet another anxiety:

به‌ڵام پرسیاره‌ بێكۆتاكانی بێتاقه‌تییه‌كی تر ده‌وروژێنێت:

is Hamlet’s madness part of a performance to confuse his enemies,

ئایا شێتییه‌كه‌ی هاملێت به‌شێكه‌ له‌ نیشاندان بۆ به‌لاڕێبردنی دوژمنه‌كانی،

or are we watching a character on the brink of insanity?

یاخود ئایا چاودێری كه‌سایه‌تییه‌ك ده‌كه‌ین له‌ لێواری تێكچوون؟

ئه‌م پرسیارانه‌ گرانیی خۆی هه‌یه‌ له‌سه‌ر كارلێكردنی له‌گه‌ڵ هه‌موو كه‌سایه‌تییه‌ك.

These questions weigh heavily on Hamlet’s interactions with every character.

And since he spends much of the play facing inward,

له‌به‌ر ئه‌وه‌ی زۆربه‌ی شانۆییه‌كه‌ له‌ناوه‌وه‌ به‌سه‌رده‌بات،

he often fails to see the destruction left in his wake.

زۆربه‌ی جار شكست ده‌هێنێت له‌ بینینی ئه‌و وێرانكارییه‌ی له‌ شوێنه‌كه‌ی جێماوه‌.

He’s particularly cruel to Ophelia,

بۆ ئۆفێلیا به‌دیاریكراوی دڵڕه‌قه‌،

his doomed love interest who is brought to madness by the prince’s erratic behavior.

گرنگیپێدانی شكستخواردووی بۆ خۆشه‌ویستی كه‌ بووه‌ هۆی شێتی به‌هۆی ڕه‌فتاری نائاسایی.

Her fate is one example of how tragedy could have been easily avoided,

چاره‌نووسی كچه‌كه‌ نموونه‌یه‌كه‌ له‌سه‌ر چۆنیه‌تی دووركه‌وتنه‌وه‌ له‌ تراژیدیا به‌

and shows the ripple effect of Hamlet’s toxic mind games.

ئاسانی، و كاریگه‌رییه‌ سووكه‌كانی له‌سه‌ر یاریه‌ هزرییه‌ ژه‌هراویه‌كان پێشان ده‌دات.

Similar warning signs of tragedy are constantly overlooked throughout the play.

ئاماژه‌ی ئاگاداركردنه‌وه‌ی تراژیدی لێكچوو به‌ به‌رده‌وامی له‌ شانۆییه‌كه‌ ده‌بینرێن.

Sometimes, these oversights occur because of willful blindness–

هه‌ندێكجار، ئه‌م په‌ڕاندنانه‌ ڕووده‌ده‌ن به‌هۆی كوێری كه‌له‌ڕه‌قی--

such as when Ophelia’s father dismisses Hamlet’s alarming actions

وه‌ك له‌و كاته‌ی باوكی ئۆفیلیا كاره‌ پێشبینیكه‌ره‌كانی هاملێت ڕه‌تده‌كاته‌وه‌

as mere lovesickness.

وه‌كو ئه‌وه‌ی ته‌نها خۆشه‌ویستییه‌.

At other points, tragedy stems from deliberate duplicity–

له‌ خاڵی تر، تراژیدیا له‌ دووڕوویی به‌ مه‌به‌ست هه‌ڵده‌قووڵێت--

as when a case of mistaken identity leads to yet more bloodshed.

وه‌كو ئه‌وه‌ی له‌ حاڵه‌تی ناسنامه‌ی هه‌ڵه‌ ده‌بێته‌ هۆی خوێن ڕژانی زیاتر.

These moments leave us with the uncomfortable knowledge

ئه‌م ساتانه‌ له‌گه‌ڵ زانیاری نائارام جێمان ده‌هێڵن

that tragedy evolves from human error–

كه‌ تراژیدیا له‌ هه‌ڵه‌ی مرۆڤ په‌ره‌ده‌سه‌نێت-

even if our mistake is to leave things undecided.

ته‌نانه‌ت گه‌ر هه‌ڵه‌كه‌مان بریتی بێت له‌ جێهێشتنی شته‌كان به‌ دیارینه‌كراوی.

For all these reasons, perhaps the one thing we never doubt is Hamlet’s humanity.

له‌به‌ر ئه‌م هۆكارانه‌، ڕه‌نگه‌ ته‌نیا شت گومانی لێنه‌كه‌ین میهره‌بانی هاملێته‌.

But we must constantly grapple with who the “real” Hamlet might be.

به‌ڵام پێویسته‌ به‌رده‌وام ده‌سته‌ویه‌خه‌ بین له‌وه‌ی كامه‌ هاملێتی ڕاسته‌قینه‌یه‌.

Is he a noble son avenging his father?

ئایا كوڕێكی خانه‌دانه‌ تۆڵه‌ی باوكی ده‌كاته‌وه‌؟

Or a mad prince creating courtly chaos?

یاخود میرێكی شێته‌ ئاژاوه‌ی به‌ڕه‌وشت ده‌خوڵقێنێت؟

Should he act or observe, doubt or trust?

ئایا پێویسته‌ ڕه‌فتاربكات یان چاودێری، گومانی هه‌بێت یان متمانه‌ بكات؟

Who is he? Why is he here?

ئه‌و كێیه‌؟ بۆچی لێره‌یه‌؟

And who’s out there– waiting in the dark?

و كێ له‌وێیه‌- له‌ تاریكی چاوه‌ڕێ ده‌كات؟
