For as long as we’ve had language, some people have tried to control it.

هەر لەو کاتەوەی زمان هەیە، خەڵکانێک هەوڵی کۆنتڕۆڵکردنی ئەدەن.

And some of the most frequent targets of this communication regulation

یەکێک لە باوترین ئامانجە دوبارەوەووەکان بۆ گفتوگۆیەکی ڕێک و پێک

are the ums, ers, and likes that pepper our conversations.

ئەم، ئێر، لێکچووە کە گفتوگۆکانمان تێک ئەدات.

Ancient Greek and Latin texts warned against speaking with hesitation,

دەقی لاتین وڕۆمانە کۆنەکان دژی قسەکردن بوون بە خاوە خاوی،

modern schools have tried to ban the offending terms,

قوتابخانە نوێیەکان هەوڵیانداوە بڕگە سەرپێچیەکان قەدەغە بکەن،

and renowned linguist Noam Chomsky dismissed these expressions as “errors”

زمانەوانی بەناوبانگ نۆوام چۆمسکی ئەو دەربڕینانە وەکو “هەڵە” یەکی

irrelevant to language.

Historically, these speech components had been lumped

لە ڕووی مێژوویەوە،پێکھاتەی ئەم گوفتارانە کۆکراونەتەوە

into the broader bucket of “disfluencies”—

بۆ بوارێکی فراوانتر

linguistic fillers which distract from useful speech.

However, none of this controversy has made these so-called disfluencies less common.

They continue to occur roughly 2 to 3 times per minute in natural speech.

And different versions of them can be found in almost every language,

So are ums and uhs just a habit we can’t break?

ئایا ئەمز و ناز خویەکن ناتوانین دەستبەرداری بین؟

Or is there more to them than meets the ear?

یاخود تەنها شتانێکن و بەر گوێمان دەکەون؟

To answer this question, it helps to compare these speech components

وەڵامی ئەو پرسیارە یارمەتیمان دەداتا بەراوردی ئەو پێکهاتە قسەیانە

to other words we use in everyday life.

بەو وشانەی لە ژیانی ڕۆژانەماندا بەکاری دێنین بیکەین.

While a written word might have multiple definitions,

لەکاتێکدا وشەی نووسراو ڕەنگە چەند پێناسەیەکی هەبێت،

we can usually determine its intended meaning through context.

کە دەتوانین مەبەستی ماناکەی لەڕێگەی دەقەکەوە ئامادە بکەین.

In speech however, a word can take on additional layers of meaning.

لە قسەکردندا وشەیەک دەتوانێت چەند فرە مانایەکی هەبێ

Tone of voice, the relationship between speakers,

تۆنی قسەکردن پەیوەندی نێوان قسەکەرەکان،

and expectations of where a conversation will go

وە ئەو پێشبینیانەی گفتووگۆیەک تا چەندێک بەردەوام ئەبێ

can imbue even words that seem like filler with vital information.

کاریگەریان هەیە تەنانەت ئەو وشانەی وەک پڕکەرەوەی زانیاری دەبینرێن.

This is where “um” and “uh” come in.

ئەمەش ئەو شوێنەیە کە نم ناهی لێ پەیدا بووە.

Or “eh” and “ehm,” “tutoa” and “öö,” “eto” and “ano.”

یاخود ت ئهم ئۆ ئۆنۆ

Linguists call these filled pauses, which are a kind of hesitation phenomenon.

زانایانی زمانەوانی ئەمە بەوەستانە پڕکەرەوکان ناودەبەجۆرێکن لەدیاردەی دوودڵی

And these seemingly insignificant interruptions

ئەو دەستەواژە بێبایەخانە

are actually quite meaningful in spoken communication.

لەڕاستیدا لەکاتی گفتوگۆ تەواو مانادارن.

For example, while a silent pause might be interpreted

بۆ نمونە کاتێک کەسێک لە قسەکردندا دەوەستێت

as a sign for others to start speaking,

بەمانای بۆ کەسانی تر بۆ دەسپێکردن بە قسە لێکبدرێتەوە،

a filled pause can signal that you’re not finished yet.

پڕکەرەوە زمانیەکان ئەوە نیشان دەدەن کەتۆ هێشتا لە قسە تەواو نەبوویت.

Hesitation phenomena can buy time for your speech to catch up with your thoughts,

دیاردەی دوودڵی دەتوانێت کاتت بۆ بگەڕێنێتەوە تا بیرکردنەوەت ڕێکخەیت.

or to fish out the right word for a situation.

And they don’t just benefit the speaker—

a filled pause lets your listeners know an important word is on the way.

Linguists have even found that people are more likely

to remember a word if it comes after a hesitation.

ئەو وشانەیان بیردەکەوێتەوە کە دوای دوودڵیەک گووتراون.

Hesitation phenomena aren’t the only parts of speech

دیاردەی دوودڵی تاکە بەشی قسەکردن نییە

that take on new meaning during dialogue.

کە دەست دەگرێت بەسەر وشەکان لەکاتی گفتووگۆدا.

Words and phrases such as “like,” “well” or “you know”

وەشەو دەستەواژەی وەک وەک لەڕاستیدا

function as discourse markers,

وەک نیشانەی گفتووگۆ کار دەکەن،

ignoring their literal meaning to convey something about the sentence

پشتگوێ خستنی مانا حەرفیەکان وەک نیشاندانی شتێک سەبارەت بە ڕستەکە

in which they appear.

کاتێک کە دەردەکەون.

Discourse markers direct the flow of conversation,

نیشانە گفتوگۆکان ئاڕاستەی گفتوهۆ دەکەن،

and some studies suggest that conscientious speakers

هەندێک لە نیشانەکان ئەوەیان نیشان داوە کە قسەکەرە وریاکان

use more of these phrases to ensure everyone is being heard and understood.

زیاتر ئەو دەستەواژە بەکاردێنن تا دڵنیابنکە هەمووان گوێگرن و تێدەگەن.

For example, starting a sentence with “Look...”

بۆ نمونە کاتێک ڕستەیەک بە وشەی سەیرکە دەست پێدەکەیت

can indicate your attitude and help you gauge the listener’s agreement.

هەڵوێستی تۆ نیشان دەدات یارمەتیت دەدا تا پێوانەی قسەکردنی گوێگر بکەیت

“I mean” can signal that you’re about to elaborate on something.

مەبەستم ئەوە نیشان دەدا کەتۆ خەریکە ڕوونکردنەوە لەسەر شتێک ئەدەیت.

And the dreaded “like” can perform many functions,

وە وشەی وەک ئەرکی زۆر دەبینێت،

such as establishing a loose connection between thoughts,

وەک دروستکردنی پەیوەندی پچڕان لە نێوان قسەکان،

or introducing someone else's words or actions.

یاخود نیشاندانی قسەو کردەوەکانی کەسێکی تر.

These markers give people a real-time view into your thought process

ئەم نیشانانە دەرفەتێکی باش دەدەنە خەڵک تا پڕۆسەی بیرکدنەوەت ببینن

and help listeners follow, interpret, and predict what you’re trying to say.

وە یارمەتی گوێگرن دەدات تا شوێن لێکدانەوە و پێشبینی ئەوە بکەن کە تۆ چیدەڵێیت

Discourse markers and hesitation phenomena

نیشانە گفتووگۆیەکان و دیاردە دوودڵیەکان

aren’t just useful for understanding language—

تەنها بە سوود نین بۆ تێگەشتنی زمان

they help us learn it too.

یارمەتیمان دەدەن تا فێری زمان بین.

In 2011, a study showed toddlers common and uncommon objects

لە ساڵی ٢٠١١ توێژینەوەیک کەرەستە باو ناباوەکانی نیشانی منداڵان داوە

alongside a recording referring to one of the items.

شانبەشانی ئاماژەکردن بە یەکێک لە کەرەستەکان.

When a later recording asked them to identify the uncommon object,

کاتێک توێژینەوەکە داوای لە منداڵان کردووە کە کەرستەیەکی نەزانراو دیاری بکای،

toddlers performed better if that instruction contained a filled pause.

منداڵەکان باشتر ئەدایان کردووە کاتێک وەستانەکانیان لەخۆگرتووە.

This may mean that filled pauses cue toddlers to expect novel words,

واتا ئەو پڕکەرەوانەیزمان یارمەتی منداڵان دەدەن تا وشەکانی ناو ڕۆمان بزانن،

and help them connect new words to new objects.

و یارمەتیان دەدەن تا وشە نوێکان بە کەرەستەکانەوە وابەستە بکەن.

For adolescents and adults learning a second language,

بۆ هەرزەکار وپێگەشتوان فێربوونی زمانی دووەم،

filled pauses smooth out awkward early conversations.

وەستانە پڕکەرەوەکان دەست پێکی قسە ناخۆشەکان ناهێڵێت.

And once they’re more confident,

وە هەر کە زیاتر بڕوایان بە خۆیان کرد،

the second-language learner can signal their newfound fluency

فێربووانی زمانی دووەم دەتوانن ڕەوانبێژی خۆیان بنیادبنێن.

by using the appropriate hesitation phenomenon.

بە بەکارهێنانی گونجاوی دیاردەی دوودڵی.

Because, contrary to popular belief,

چونکە پێچەوانەی بیرووباوەڕە باوەکان،

the use of filled pauses doesn't decrease with mastery of a language.

بە بەکارهێنانی ئەو وشانە لە لێهاتووی کەم نابێتەوە.

Just because hesitation phenomena and discourse markers

تەنها لەبەرئەوەی دیاردە دوودڵی و ئاماژەیەکان

are a natural part of communication doesn’t mean they’re always appropriate.

بەشێکی سروشتی و پەیوەندیکردنن مانای ئەوە نییە گونجاون بۆ بەکارهێنا

Outside of writing dialogue, they serve no purpose in most formal writing.

لە دیالۆگە نووسراوەکاندا هیچ مەبەستێک لە نووسراوە فەرمیەکان نیشان نادەن.

And in some contexts, the stigma these social cues carry

و لەهەندێک دەقدا ئەو نیشانەی ئاماژە کۆمەڵایەتیەکان لەخۆ دەگرێت

can work against the speaker.

دەتوانن دژی قسەکەرەکە بووەستنەوە.

But in most conversations, these seemingly senseless sounds

بەڵام لە زۆرێک لە گفتووگۆکاندا ئەوە وادەرکەووتووە بێ مانایە

can convey a world of meaning.

دەتوانن جیهانێک لە مانا لەخۆبگرن.
