I'm actually going to share something with you

I haven't talked about probably in more than 10 years.

So bear with me as I take you through this journey.

When I was 22 years old,

Quando eu tinha 22 anos,

I came home from work, put a leash on my dog

cheguei a casa do trabalho, pus a trela à minha cadela

and went for my usual run.

I had no idea that at that moment,

my life was going to change forever.

While I was preparing my dog for the run,

a man was finishing drinking at a bar,

picked up his car keys, got into a car

and headed south,

or wherever he was.

I was running across the street,

and the only thing that I actually remember

is feeling like a grenade went off in my head.

And I remember putting my hands on the ground

and feeling my life's blood

emptying out of my neck and my mouth.

What had happened is, he ran a red light

and hit me and my dog.

She ended up underneath the car.

Ela acabou por ficar debaixo do carro.

I flew out in front of the car,

and then he ran over my legs.

e ele passou por cima das minhas pernas.

My left leg got caught up in the wheel well --

A minha perna esquerda ficou presa no eixo das rodas

spun it around.

e ficou toda torcida.

The bumper of the car hit my throat,

O para-choques do carro bateu na minha garganta,

slicing it open.

e cortou-a ao meio.

I ended up with blunt chest trauma.

Acabei por sofrer um trauma do tórax.

Your aorta comes up behind your heart, it's your major artery --

A nossa aorta passa por detrás do coração — é a nossa maior artéria —

and it was severed, so my blood was gurgling out of my mouth.

e foi cortada, fazendo com que o sangue me saísse pela boca.

It foamed, and ... horrible things were happening to me.

Espumava, e estavam-me a acontecer coisas horríveis.

I had no idea what was going on,

Eu não fazia ideia do que se passava,

but strangers intervened,

mas apareceram estranhos

que mantiveram o meu coração a mexer, a bater.

kept my heart moving, beating.

I say "moving," because it was quivering,

Eu digo "mexer-se" porque estava agitado

and they were trying to put a beat back into it.

e eles estavam a tentar fazê-lo entrar no ritmo.

Somebody was smart and put a Bic pen in my neck

Alguém foi esperto e pôs-me uma caneta Bic no pescoço

to open up my airway, so I could get some air in there.

para abrir as vias respiratórias e eu conseguir respirar.

And my lung collapsed,

O meu pulmão colapsou,

so somebody cut me open and put a pen in there as well,

e houve alguém que me abriu e também espetou ali um alfinete

to stop that catastrophic event from happening.

Somehow I ended up at the hospital.

Acabei por ir parar ao hospital.

I was wrapped in ice,

Estava embrulhada em gelo

and then eventually put into a drug-induced coma.

e acabaram por me pôr em coma induzido.

Eighteen months later, I woke up.

Acordei 18 meses depois.

I was blind, I couldn't speak

Estava cega, não conseguia falar,

and I couldn't walk.

e não conseguia andar.

I was 64 pounds.

Pesava 29 quilos.

The hospital really has no idea what to do with people like that.

O hospital não sabe o que fazer a uma pessoa naquele estado.

And in fact, they started to call me a "gomer."

Começaram por chamar-me "vegetal".

That's another story we won't even get into.

É outra história que nem sequer vamos abordar.

I had so many surgeries to put my neck back together,

Fiz imensas cirurgias para reconstruir o pescoço,

para reparar o coração, umas quantas vezes.

to repair my heart a few times.

Some things worked, some things didn't.

Algumas coisas resultaram, outras não.

I had lots of titanium put in me;

Tenho muitas próteses de titânio dentro de mim,

cadaver bones,

ossos de cadáver

to try to get my feet moving the right way.

para tentar fazer com que os meus pés se movessem da maneira certa.

And I ended up with a plastic nose,

Acabei por ficar com um nariz de plástico,

porcelain teeth and all kinds of other things.

But eventually, I started to look human again.

But ...

It's hard sometimes to talk about these things,

so bear with me.

I had more than 50 surgeries.

But who's counting?

So eventually, the hospital decided it was time for me to go.

Por fim, o hospital decidiu que estava na hora de ter alta.

They needed to open up space for somebody else

Precisavam de espaço para outra pessoa

that they thought could come back

que eles pensavam que talvez recuperasse

from whatever they were going through.

fosse do que fosse do que estava a passar.

Everybody lost faith in me being able to recover.

Tinham perdido a esperança de eu poder recuperar.

So they basically put a map up on the wall, threw a dart,

and it landed at a senior home, here in Colorado.

e ele acertou num lar de idosos aqui no Colorado.

And I know all of you are scratching your head:

Eu sei que vocês estão a coçar a cabeça:

"Um lar de idosos?

"A senior citizens' home?

What in the world are you going to do there?"

"Mas que raio é que foste lá fazer?"

But if you think about all of the skills and talent

Mas, se pensarem em todas as capacidades e talentos

that are in this room right now,

que estão nesta sala, neste momento,

that's what a senior home has.

é o que um lar de idosos tem.

So there were all these skills and talents

Estavam ali essas capacidades e talentos

that these seniors had.

que aqueles idosos tinham.

The one advantage they had over most of you

A grande vantagem que têm sobre a maior parte de vocês

is wisdom,

é a sabedoria,

because they had a long life.

porque tinham uma vida longa.

And I needed that wisdom at that moment in my life.

Eu precisava daquela sabedoria naquele momento da minha vida.

But imagine what it was like for them

Mas imaginem o que foi para eles

when I showed up at their doorstep.

quando eu lhes apareci à porta?

At that point, I had gained four pounds, so I was 68 pounds.

Naquela altura, tinha engordado 2 kg, pesava 31 kg.

I was bald.

Estava careca.

I was wearing hospital scrubs.

Estava vestida com uma bata de hospital.

And somebody donated tennis shoes for me.

Alguém tinha-me dado um par de ténis.

And I had a white cane in one hand

Tinha uma bengala branca numa mão

e uma mala cheia de relatórios médicos na outra mão.

and a suitcase full of medical records in another hand.

So the senior citizens realized

Então os idosos perceberam

that they needed to have an emergency meeting.

que tinham de fazer uma reunião de emergência.

(Laughter)

(Risos)

So they pulled back and they were looking at each other,

Afastaram-se, olharam uns para os outros e disseram:

and they were going, "OK, what skills do we have in this room?

"Ok, que capacidades temos nós aqui nesta sala?

This kid needs a lot of work."

"Esta miúda precisa de ser muito trabalhada."

So they eventually started matching their talents and skills

Por fim, começaram a reunir os seus talentos e capacidades

to all of my needs.

a todas as minhas necessidades.

But one of the first things they needed to do

Uma das primeiras coisas que precisaram de fazer

was assess what I needed right away.

foi avaliar o que eu precisava de imediato

I needed to figure out how to eat like a normal human being,

Eu precisava de aprender a comer como um ser humano normal,

since I'd been eating through a tube in my chest

and through my veins.

So I had to go through trying to eat again.

And they went through that process.

And then they had to figure out:

"Well, she needs furniture.

"Ela precisa de mobiliário.

She is sleeping in the corner of this apartment."

So they went to their storage lockers

and all gathered their extra furniture --

e juntaram o que tinham de mobílias extra.

gave me pots and pans, blankets --

Deram-me tachos e frigideiras, cobertores,

everything.

And then the next thing that I needed

Depois, o que eu precisava a seguir

era de uma mudança de visual.

was a makeover.

(Laughter)

So out went the green scrubs,

Por isso, desapareceram as batas verdes

and in came the polyester and floral prints.

e apareceram os padrões florais e o poliéster.

(Laughter)

We're not going to talk about the hairstyles

Não vamos falar sobre os penteados que eles me tentaram impingir

they tried to force on me once my hair grew back.

But I did say no to the blue hair.

(Laughter)

(Risos)

So eventually, what went on is,

they decided that, well, I need to learn to speak.

You can't be an independent person

Não podemos ser pessoas independentes

if you're not able to speak and you can't see.

So they figured not being able to see is one thing,

but they need to get me to talk.

So while Sally, the office manager,

was teaching me to speak in the day --

it's hard, because when you're a kid, you take things for granted.

You learn things unconsciously.

But for me, I was an adult and it was embarrassing,

and I had to learn how to coordinate my new throat with my tongue

and my new teeth and my lips,

and capture the air and get the word out.

So, I acted like a two-year-old,

and refused to work.

But the men had a better idea.

They were going to make it fun for me.

So they were teaching me cuss-word Scrabble at night.

(Laughter)

And then, secretly, how to swear like a sailor.

e depois, secretamente,

(Laughter)

I'm going to just leave it to your imagination

as to what my first words were --

(Laughter)

when Sally finally got my confidence built.

quando a Sally conseguiu restaurar a minha confiança.

(Laughter)

So I moved on from there.

Então evoluí a partir dali.

And a former teacher who happened to have Alzheimer's

E uma antiga professora que, por sinal, tinha Alzheimer

took on the task of teaching me to write.

encarregou-se da tarefa de me ensinar a escrever.

The redundancy was actually good for me.

A redundância na verdade foi boa para mim.

So, we'll just keep moving on.

Então vamos continuar a avançar.

One of the pivotal times for me

Um dos acontecimentos fulcrais para mim

was actually learning to cross the street again

foi aprender a atravessar a estrada outra vez,

as a blind person.

como uma pessoa cega.

So close your eyes.

Por isso, fechem os olhos.

Now imagine you have to cross a street.

Agora imaginem que têm de atravessar uma rua.

You don't know how far that street is,

Vocês não sabem o quão larga é rua

and you don't know if you're going straight.

e não sabem se estão a andar a direito

And you hear cars whizzing back and forth,

e conseguem ouvir os carros a zumbir para a frente e para trás,

Vocês tiveram um acidente horrível

and you had a horrible accident

that landed you in this situation.

que vos pôs nesta situação.

So there were two obstacles I had to get through.

Por isso eu tinha de ultrapassar dois obstáculos.

One was post-traumatic stress disorder.

Um era o stress pós-traumático.

Every time I approached the corner or the curb,

Sempre que me aproximava da esquina ou da curva

I would panic.

entrava em pânico.

And the second one

E o segundo era tentar descobrir

was actually trying to figure out how to cross that street.

como atravessar aquela rua.

So one of the seniors just came up to me,

Então, uma das idosas chegou-se ao pé de mim,

and she pushed me up to the corner and said,

empurrou-me para a esquina e disse-me:

"Quando achares que é altura, estica a bengala para a frente.

"When you think it's time to go, just stick the cane out there.

"Se for atingida, não atravesses a estrada."

If it's hit, don't cross the street."

(Laughter)

(Risos)

Made perfect sense.

Fazia todo o sentido.

(Laughter)

But by the third cane that went whizzing across the road --

Mas, por volta da terceira bengala que foi a voar pela rua,

(Laughter)

eles perceberam que precisavam de juntar os recursos,

they realized that they needed to put their resources together,

e angariaram fundos para eu poder ir para o Instituto Braille

and they raised funds

so that I could go to the Braille Institute

and actually gain the skills to be a blind person,

e aprender as competências para ser uma pessoa cega,

and also to go get a guide dog,

e também para arranjar um cão guia que transformou a minha vida.

who transformed my life.

And I was able to return to college

Fui capaz de voltar para a universidade

because of the senior citizens who invested in me,

por causa dos idosos que investiram em mim,

and also the guide dog and skill set I had gained.

e também do cão guia e por causa do conjunto de competências que ganhei.

Ten years later, I gained my sight back.

Dez anos mais tarde, recuperei a minha visão.

Not magically --

Não foi magia.

I opted in for three surgeries,

Optei por três cirurgias,

and one of them was experimental.

e uma delas era experimental.

It was actually robotic surgery

Era uma cirurgia robótica.

that removed a hematoma from behind my eye.

Removeram um hematoma que estava atrás do meu olho.

The biggest change for me was that the world moved forward,

A maior alteração para mim

foi que o mundo tinha seguido em frente,

that there were innovations and all kinds of new things --

havia inovações e todo o tipo de coisas novas

cellphones, laptops,

telemóveis, portáteis,

all these things that I had never seen before.

todas estas coisas que eu nunca tinha visto.

And as a blind person,

E como uma pessoa cega, a nossa memória visual desvanece-se

your visual memory fades,

e é substituída pelo que sentimos pelas coisas

and is replaced with how you feel about things

and how things sound

e como as coisas soam

and how things smell.

e como as coisas cheiram.

So one day, I was in my room

Um dia, eu estava no meu quarto

and I saw this thing sitting in my room.

e vi uma coisa ali no quarto

I thought it was a monster,

que me pareceu um monstro.

so I was walking around it.

Comecei a andar à volta daquilo

And I go, "I'm just going to touch it."

e pensei: "Vou só tocar-lhe."

And I touched it and I went,

Toquei-lhe e exclamei:

"Oh my God, it's a laundry basket."

"Oh meu Deus, é um cesto da roupa suja."

(Laughter)

(Risos)

Everything is different when you're a sighted person,

Tudo é diferente quando somos providos de visão

because you take that for granted.

porque tomamo-la como garantida.

But when you're blind, you have the tactile memory for things.

Mas quando somos cegos, temos a memória táctil das coisas.

A maior mudança para mim foi olhar para as minhas mãos

The biggest change for me was looking down at my hands

and seeing that I'd lost 10 years of my life.

e ver que tinha perdido 10 anos da minha vida.

I thought that time had stood still for some reason

Pensei que o tempo tinha parado por qualquer razão

and moved on for family and friends.

e continuado para a família e para os amigos.

But when I looked down,

Mas quando olhei para elas,

I realized that time marched on for me, too,

percebi que o tempo também tinha passado para mim

and that I needed to get caught up.

e que precisava de o recuperar,

So I got going on it.

por isso comecei a fazê-lo.

We didn't have words like "crowdsourcing" and "radical collaboration"

Não havia palavras como "crowd-sourcing" e colaboração radical

when I had my accident.

quando tive o meu acidente.

Mas o conceito revelou-se verdadeiro.

But the concept held true --

people working with people to rebuild me;

Pessoas a trabalhar com pessoas para me reconstruir;

people working with people to reeducate me.

pessoas a trabalhar com pessoas para me reeducar.

I wouldn't be standing here today

Eu não estaria aqui hoje

if it wasn't for extreme radical collaboration.

se não fosse uma extrema colaboração radical.
