I haven't talked about probably in more than 10 years.

So bear with me as I take you through this journey.

When I was 22 years old,

I came home from work, put a leash on my dog

and went for my usual run.

I had no idea that at that moment,

my life was going to change forever.

While I was preparing my dog for the run,

picked up his car keys, got into a car

and headed south,

I was running across the street,

and the only thing that I actually remember

And I remember putting my hands on the ground

and feeling my life's blood

What had happened is, he ran a red light

and hit me and my dog.

She ended up underneath the car.

I flew out in front of the car,

and then he ran over my legs.

My left leg got caught up in the wheel well --

spun it around.

The bumper of the car hit my throat,

slicing it open.

et l'a ouverte en deux.

I ended up with blunt chest trauma.

J'ai fini avec un traumatisme fermé du thorax.

Your aorta comes up behind your heart, it's your major artery --

L'aorte s'arrache de votre cœur.

C'est l'artère principale, et elle a été sectionnée,

and it was severed, so my blood was gurgling out of my mouth.

It foamed, and ... horrible things were happening to me.

I had no idea what was going on,

but strangers intervened,

kept my heart moving, beating.

I say "moving," because it was quivering,

and they were trying to put a beat back into it.

Somebody was smart and put a Bic pen in my neck

to open up my airway, so I could get some air in there.

And my lung collapsed,

so somebody cut me open and put a pen in there as well,

to stop that catastrophic event from happening.

Somehow I ended up at the hospital.

I was wrapped in ice,

and then eventually put into a drug-induced coma.

Je me suis réveillée 18 mois plus tard.

Eighteen months later, I woke up.

I was blind, I couldn't speak

J'étais aveugle, je ne pouvais pas parler,

and I couldn't walk.

et je ne pouvais pas marcher.

I was 64 pounds.

Je pesais 29 kilos.

The hospital really has no idea what to do with people like that.

L'hôpital n'avait pas la moindre idée

And in fact, they started to call me a "gomer."

En fait, ils ont commencé à me trouver encombrante.

That's another story we won't even get into.

I had so many surgeries to put my neck back together,

J'ai subi tellement d'opérations pour remettre mon cou en état,

to repair my heart a few times.

Some things worked, some things didn't.

On m'a implanté beaucoup de titane,

I had lots of titanium put in me;

to try to get my feet moving the right way.

pour essayer que mes pieds fonctionnent correctement.

And I ended up with a plastic nose,

Et j'ai fini avec un nez en plastique, des dents en porcelaine,

porcelain teeth and all kinds of other things.

et toutes sortes d'autres choses.

But eventually, I started to look human again.

Mais finalement, j'ai retrouvé l'apparence d'un être humain.

But ...

Mais c'est dur parfois d'en parler,

It's hard sometimes to talk about these things,

alors pardonnez-moi.

so bear with me.

I had more than 50 surgeries.

J'ai subi plus de 50 opérations.

But who's counting?

(Laughter)

Finalement, l'hôpital a décidé

So eventually, the hospital decided it was time for me to go.

They needed to open up space for somebody else

Ils avaient besoin de faire de la place

that they thought could come back

from whatever they were going through.

Everybody lost faith in me being able to recover.

Alors ils ont accroché une carte au mur, ils ont lancé une fléchette,

So they basically put a map up on the wall, threw a dart,

et elle est tombée sur une résidence pour personnes âgées, ici, dans le Colorado.

and it landed at a senior home, here in Colorado.

And I know all of you are scratching your head:

Je sais que vous grattez tous la tête :

" Une résidence pour personnes âgées ? Qu'est-ce que vous allez bien pouvoir faire là ?"

"A senior citizens' home?

What in the world are you going to do there?"

Mais si vous réfléchissez

But if you think about all of the skills and talent

à toutes les compétences et les talents présents aujourd'hui dans cette salle,

that are in this room right now,

une résidence pour personnes âgées a les mêmes.

that's what a senior home has.

Il y avait toutes ces compétences et ces talents

So there were all these skills and talents

que ces retraités avaient.

that these seniors had.

The one advantage they had over most of you

Et l'avantage qu'ils avaient sur la plupart d'entre vous,

c'est la sagesse,

is wisdom,

because they had a long life.

parce qu'ils avaient eu une longue vie.

And I needed that wisdom at that moment in my life.

Et j'avais besoin de cette sagesse, à ce moment-là de ma vie.

Mais vous imaginez ce que cela a dû être pour eux,

But imagine what it was like for them

quand je me suis présentée à leur porte ?

when I showed up at their doorstep.

A ce moment, j'avais pris 2 kilos,

At that point, I had gained four pounds, so I was 68 pounds.

je pesais donc 31 kilos.

J'étais chauve.

I was bald.

Je portais des pyjamas d'hôpital.

I was wearing hospital scrubs.

Quelqu'un m'avait fais don d'une paire de tennis.

And somebody donated tennis shoes for me.

And I had a white cane in one hand

J'avais une canne blanche dans une main,

et une valise pleine de dossiers médicaux dans l'autre.

and a suitcase full of medical records in another hand.

Les personnes âgées ont alors compris

So the senior citizens realized

that they needed to have an emergency meeting.

qu'il leur fallait convoquer une réunion de crise.

(Laughter)

(Rires)

So they pulled back and they were looking at each other,

Ils se sont reculés, ils se sont jeté des regards,

and they were going, "OK, what skills do we have in this room?

et ils se disaient : " Ok, quelles compétences avons-nous parmi nous ?

This kid needs a lot of work."

Cette môme a besoin d'un gros travail."

So they eventually started matching their talents and skills

Et ils ont commencé à confronter

leurs talents et leurs compétences

à tous mes besoins.

to all of my needs.

Mais l'une des toutes premières choses qu'ils ont dû faire,

But one of the first things they needed to do

a été d'évaluer mes besoins prioritaires.

was assess what I needed right away.

Il me fallait découvrir

I needed to figure out how to eat like a normal human being,

comment manger comme un être humain normal,

since I'd been eating through a tube in my chest

puisque je m'étais nourrie à travers un tube planté dans ma gorge

et dans mes veines.

and through my veins.

So I had to go through trying to eat again.

Alors j'ai dû essayer de manger de nouveau.

And they went through that process.

Et ils m'ont accompagnée dans ce parcours.

Et puis, il leur a fallu réfléchir :

And then they had to figure out:

"Well, she needs furniture.

" Elle a besoin de meubles.

She is sleeping in the corner of this apartment."

Elle dort dans un coin de son appartement. "

So they went to their storage lockers

Alors ils ont ouvert leurs pièces de stockage,

and all gathered their extra furniture --

et ils ont tous rassemblé leurs meubles en surplus -

gave me pots and pans, blankets --

ils m'ont donné des batteries de cuisine, des couvertures,

tout.

everything.

And then the next thing that I needed

Et puis, ce qu'il me fallait ensuite,

c'était un relooking complet.

was a makeover.

(Laughter)

Donc, au revoir mes pyjamas d'hôpital verts

So out went the green scrubs,

and in came the polyester and floral prints.

(Rires)

(Laughter)

We're not going to talk about the hairstyles

Je ne parlerai pas des coiffures qu'ils ont essayé de m'imposer,

they tried to force on me once my hair grew back.

Mais j'ai dit non à la teinture bleue.

But I did say no to the blue hair.

(Rires)

(Laughter)

So eventually, what went on is,

Et puis ce qui est arrivé,

c'est qu'ils ont décidé, eh bien, qu'il me fallait apprendre à parler.

they decided that, well, I need to learn to speak.

On ne peut pas être une personne autonome

You can't be an independent person

si on ne peut pas parler et qu'on ne voit pas.

if you're not able to speak and you can't see.

So they figured not being able to see is one thing,

Ils se sont dit que ne pas voir est une chose,

but they need to get me to talk.

mais qu'ils devaient me faire parler.

So while Sally, the office manager,

Et tandis que Sally, la directrice administrative,

was teaching me to speak in the day --

m'apprenait à parler pendant la journée -

it's hard, because when you're a kid, you take things for granted.

c'est difficile, parce que quand vous êtes un enfant,

You learn things unconsciously.

But for me, I was an adult and it was embarrassing,

and I had to learn how to coordinate my new throat with my tongue

and my new teeth and my lips,

and capture the air and get the word out.

So, I acted like a two-year-old,

and refused to work.

et j'ai refusé de travailler.

But the men had a better idea.

They were going to make it fun for me.

Ils allaient me rendre la tâche amusante.

Ils m'ont appris à jouer au Scrabble des gros mots, la nuit,

So they were teaching me cuss-word Scrabble at night.

(Rires)

(Laughter)

et puis, en secret,

And then, secretly, how to swear like a sailor.

à jurer comme un charretier.

(Laughter)

Aussi je vous laisse imaginer

I'm going to just leave it to your imagination

as to what my first words were --

ce qu'ont été mes premiers mots

(Laughter)

when Sally finally got my confidence built.

quand Sally m'a finalement redonné confiance en moi.

(Laughter)

(Rires)

So I moved on from there.

J'ai continué à progresser.

And a former teacher who happened to have Alzheimer's

Un ancien professeur, qui était atteint d'Alzheimer,

took on the task of teaching me to write.

s'est attelé à la tâche de m'apprendre à écrire.

The redundancy was actually good for me.

En fait, la redondance m'était utile.

So, we'll just keep moving on.

L'un des moments clés pour moi,

One of the pivotal times for me

was actually learning to cross the street again

as a blind person.

So close your eyes.

Now imagine you have to cross a street.

Maintenant, imaginez que vous devez traverser une rue.

Vous ne savez pas à quelle distance elle se trouve,

You don't know how far that street is,

vous ne savez pas si vous allez tout droit,

and you don't know if you're going straight.

And you hear cars whizzing back and forth,

et vous pouvez entendre les voitures siffler de droite et de gauche,

et vous avez eu un terrible accident

and you had a horrible accident

that landed you in this situation.

qui vous a mis dans cette situation.

So there were two obstacles I had to get through.

J'avais donc deux obstacles à surmonter.

One was post-traumatic stress disorder.

Le premier était le syndrome du stress post-traumatique.

Every time I approached the corner or the curb,

I would panic.

And the second one

was actually trying to figure out how to cross that street.

So one of the seniors just came up to me,

and she pushed me up to the corner and said,

et elle m'a poussé jusqu'au trottoir, et elle a dit :

"Quand tu sens que c'est le moment, brandis simplement la canne devant toi.

"When you think it's time to go, just stick the cane out there.

Si elle est touchée, ne traverse pas. "

If it's hit, don't cross the street."

(Laughter)

(Rires)

Ça avait l'air tout simple.

Made perfect sense.

(Laughter)

Mais après la troisième canne

But by the third cane that went whizzing across the road --

qui avait volé à travers la rue,

(Laughter)

ils ont compris qu'il leur fallait réunir leurs moyens,

they realized that they needed to put their resources together,

et ils ont levé des fonds

and they raised funds

so that I could go to the Braille Institute

pour que je puisse aller à l'Institut Braille,

and actually gain the skills to be a blind person,

et vraiment acquérir les compétences

nécessaires à une aveugle,

et également d'avoir un chien guide,

and also to go get a guide dog,

qui a transformé ma vie.

who transformed my life.

Et j'ai pu retourner à l'Université,

And I was able to return to college

grâce aux personnes âgées qui ont investi dans moi,

because of the senior citizens who invested in me,

and also the guide dog and skill set I had gained.

et aussi grâce au chien guide, et à l'ensemble des compétences que j'avais acquises.

Ten years later, I gained my sight back.

10 ans plus tard, j'ai retrouvé la vue.

Pas par magie.

Not magically --

J'ai choisi de subir trois opérations,

I opted in for three surgeries,

dont l'une était expérimentale.

and one of them was experimental.

En fait, c'était de la chirurgie robotisée.

It was actually robotic surgery

that removed a hematoma from behind my eye.

Ils ont retiré un hématome de derrière mon œil.

Le plus grand changement pour moi

The biggest change for me was that the world moved forward,

a été que le monde avait continué d'évoluer,

that there were innovations and all kinds of new things --

et toutes sortes de nouveautés -

des téléphones mobiles, des ordinateurs portables,

cellphones, laptops,

toutes ces choses que je n'avais jamais vues auparavant.

all these things that I had never seen before.

And as a blind person,

Quand vous êtes aveugles,

your visual memory fades,

votre mémoire visuelle s'efface,

et elle est remplacée par les sentiments que les choses vous inspirent,

and is replaced with how you feel about things

et le bruit qu'elles font,

and how things sound

et l'odeur qu'elles ont.

and how things smell.

So one day, I was in my room

Un jour, j'étais dans ma chambre,

et j'ai vu cette chose tapie dans un coin,

and I saw this thing sitting in my room.

et j'ai cru que c'était un monstre.

I thought it was a monster,

so I was walking around it.

Alors, je l'ai contournée,

And I go, "I'm just going to touch it."

et je me suis dit : "Je vais juste la toucher."

And I touched it and I went,

Et je l'ai touchée, et j'ai réalisé :

"Oh my God, it's a laundry basket."

"Nom de Dieu, c'est un panier à linge !"

(Rires)

(Laughter)

Tout est différent

Everything is different when you're a sighted person,

quand vous êtes une personne voyante

parce que vous tenez cela pour acquis.

because you take that for granted.

Mais quand vous êtes aveugle,

But when you're blind, you have the tactile memory for things.

vous avez une mémoire tactile des choses.

Le plus grand changement pour moi a été d'abaisser le regard sur mes mains,

The biggest change for me was looking down at my hands

and seeing that I'd lost 10 years of my life.

et de voir que j'avais perdu 10 ans de ma vie.

I thought that time had stood still for some reason

Bizarrement, j'avais cru que le temps s’était arrêté pour moi,

and moved on for family and friends.

alors qu'il continuait à s'écouler pour ma famille et mes amis.

But when I looked down,

Mais quand j'ai abaissé le regard,

I realized that time marched on for me, too,

j'ai réalisé que le temps avait passé pour moi aussi,

and that I needed to get caught up.

So I got going on it.

We didn't have words like "crowdsourcing" and "radical collaboration"

when I had my accident.

But the concept held true --

people working with people to rebuild me;

des gens travaillant avec d'autres gens pour me reconstruire ;

people working with people to reeducate me.

des gens travaillant avec d'autres gens pour me rééduquer.

Je ne serais pas devant vous aujourd'hui

I wouldn't be standing here today

sans la collaboration la plus radicale.

if it wasn't for extreme radical collaboration.
