제 얘기 하나 들려 드릴께요

I'm actually going to share something with you

아마 한 십년 동안은 아무한테도 하지 않은 얘기인데.

I haven't talked about probably in more than 10 years.

So bear with me as I take you through this journey.

그 여정을 제가 자세히 설명해 드리지요.

When I was 22 years old,

제가 스물두살이 되던 해에,

I came home from work, put a leash on my dog

일을 마치고 집에 와서, 제 애완견 목에 줄을 채우고

and went for my usual run.

늘상하던 조깅을 하러 갔지요.

I had no idea that at that moment,

그 때는 짐작조차 못 했지만,

my life was going to change forever.

그 순간이 제 인생이 완전히 뒤바꿀 예정이었지요

While I was preparing my dog for the run,

한참 제 애완견을 준비시키고 있는 동안,

한 남자가 이제 술을 다 마시고,

a man was finishing drinking at a bar,

picked up his car keys, got into a car

열쇠를 꺼내들고, 차에 탔어요.

그리고 남쪽으로 향했지요.

and headed south,

or wherever he was.

또는 어디던 가고 싶은 쪽으로 향한거지요.

저는 뛰면서 길을 건너고 있었지요.

I was running across the street,

그리고 나서 기억나는 것 딱 한가지는

and the only thing that I actually remember

제 머리에서 수류탄이 터지는 듯한 그 느낌이었어요.

is feeling like a grenade went off in my head.

그리고 또 기억나는 건, 제가 손을 바닥에 집었던 것,

And I remember putting my hands on the ground

그리고, 제 생명의 피가

and feeling my life's blood

목과 입에서 나와

emptying out of my neck and my mouth.

비워지는것 같은 느낌이었지요

무슨 일이 일어났는가 하면,

What had happened is, he ran a red light

그 남자가 빨간 신호등을 무시하고 달려서 저하고 제 애완견을 들이 받은 거에요.

and hit me and my dog.

She ended up underneath the car.

제 애완견은 차 밑으로 깔리는것으로 끝장이 났죠

저는 그 차 앞 쪽으로 날려 튀어 나오게 되었고.

I flew out in front of the car,

and then he ran over my legs.

그 차가 제 다리를 치었지요

My left leg got caught up in the wheel well --

제 왼쪽 다리는 바퀴 사이에 꽉 끼어서

바퀴하고 같이 돌아버렸어요.

spun it around.

그 차 범퍼가 제 목을 쳐서,

The bumper of the car hit my throat,

slicing it open.

제 목을 갈라 벌어지게 했습니다.

I ended up with blunt chest trauma.

저는 흉부타박상까지 입는걸로 종결이 났습니다

Your aorta comes up behind your heart, it's your major artery --

심장 바로 뒤에서부터 올라오는 대동맥이,

이 아주 중요한 혈관이 극심하게 상해서

and it was severed, so my blood was gurgling out of my mouth.

제 입에선 피가 콸콸 쏟아졌지요

피는 거품까지 냈고

It foamed, and ... horrible things were happening to me.

제게는 아주 끔찍한 일들이 벌어지고 있었지요.

정말 제 정신이 아니었지만,

I had no idea what was going on,

어디선가 사람들이 모여들어서,

but strangers intervened,

제 심장이 계속 뛰고, 움직일 수 있게 해줬어요.

kept my heart moving, beating.

I say "moving," because it was quivering,

심장이 경련을 일으키고 있었으므로, 움직이고 있었다고 말하는거지요

또 심장 박동이 다시 되게 하려고 이것 저것 시도하고 있었지요.

and they were trying to put a beat back into it.

한 사람은 또 아주 영리하게도 볼펜을 제 목에 꽂아줬어요.

Somebody was smart and put a Bic pen in my neck

제가 숨 쉴수 있게 숨구멍을 열어 놓은거지요.

to open up my airway, so I could get some air in there.

또 제 폐가 주저앉자,

And my lung collapsed,

so somebody cut me open and put a pen in there as well,

한 사람은 제 폐부분을 열어 핀을 꽂아주었어요.

to stop that catastrophic event from happening.

최악의 상황을 방지하려고 했던 거지요.

Somehow I ended up at the hospital.

그럭저럭 병원까지 갔지요.¥

얼음에 둘러 쌓여서

I was wrapped in ice,

and then eventually put into a drug-induced coma.

결국엔 약물유도에 의한 혼수상태로 들어갔지요

18개월이 지나서 의식을 되찾았어요.

Eighteen months later, I woke up.

I was blind, I couldn't speak

눈도 안 보이고, 말도 못 했어요.

and I couldn't walk.

물론 걷지도 못했지요.

I was 64 pounds.

몸무게는 29 킬로그램 이었어요.

The hospital really has no idea what to do with people like that.

보통 병원에서는 아무런 대책이 없었습니다

저 같은 사람들을 어떻게 처치를 해야 하는지 말이지요

And in fact, they started to call me a "gomer."

사실, 병원에서는 저를 "달갑지 않은 환자" 라고 불렀어요.

That's another story we won't even get into.

그건 제가 시도하지도 않을만한 또 하나의 이야기입니다

I had so many surgeries to put my neck back together,

목을 다시금 복구하기 위해서 대단히 많은 수술을 받았고

심장을 고치려고도도 몇번인가 수술을 받았지요.

to repair my heart a few times.

Some things worked, some things didn't.

성공적인 수술도 있었고, 또 실패로 돌아간 것도 있었지요.

제 몸 속엔 쳘판(타이태니움)이,

I had lots of titanium put in me;

다른 사람들 몸에 있던 뼈가 아주 많이 끼워져 있었어요.

cadaver bones,

to try to get my feet moving the right way.

제 발이 바로 움직일 수 있고 하기 위한 조치였지요.

And I ended up with a plastic nose,

플라스틱 코와 인공치아와.

porcelain teeth and all kinds of other things.

그 외에 또 여러가지의 것들을 결국 많이 넣게 되었지요

But eventually, I started to look human again.

하지만 결국은 인간의 모습처럼 보이기 시작했어요.

But ...

어쩔땐 정말 얘기 꺼내기 조차 힘들어요.

It's hard sometimes to talk about these things,

그러니 조금 참고 들어주세요

so bear with me.

I had more than 50 surgeries.

받은 수술이 50 차례가 넘었어요.

But who's counting?

누가 하나 하나 세겠어요?

(Laughter)

결국 병원에서는

So eventually, the hospital decided it was time for me to go.

저를 퇴원시키기로 결정했습니다

They needed to open up space for somebody else

병실을 비워 놔야 할 필요가 있었던것이지요

병원측에서 판단컨태 다시 병원을 찾을 수 있는 사람들을 위해서요

that they thought could come back

from whatever they were going through.

이유와는 상관없이 말이죠.

Everybody lost faith in me being able to recover.

누구 하나도 제가 완전히 회복하리라 생각한 사람이 없었어요.

말하자면, 벽에 지도를 붙여 놓고 달트 화살을 던졌고,

So they basically put a map up on the wall, threw a dart,

여기 콜로라도에 있는 한 양로원에 보내기로 한거에요.

and it landed at a senior home, here in Colorado.

And I know all of you are scratching your head:

다들 의아해 하고 있는거 알아요.

"양로원? 거기서 도대체 뭘하려고 할겁니까?"

"A senior citizens' home?

What in the world are you going to do there?"

하지만, 생각해보면...

But if you think about all of the skills and talent

지금 여기 모여있는 모든 분들의 기술과 재능들

that are in this room right now,

그게 바로 양로원에 있는 것들이에요.

that's what a senior home has.

그러니까 그 모든 기술과 재능들을 그 곳에 있었던거지요.

So there were all these skills and talents

그 노인분들이 가지고 있었던.

that these seniors had.

The one advantage they had over most of you

여기 계신 분들 대부분보다 한 가지 더 나은 점은

바로 삶의 지혜겠지요.

is wisdom,

because they had a long life.

다들 오랜 세월 살아왔으니까요.

And I needed that wisdom at that moment in my life.

그 때 당시 저에게 필요했던 것이 바로 그 삶의 지혜였어요.

하지만 생각해 보세요, 그 분들은 어땠을지...

But imagine what it was like for them

제가 그 곳에 처음 나타났을 때 말이에요.

when I showed up at their doorstep.

그 때, 한 2 킬로그램 정도 늘어서

At that point, I had gained four pounds, so I was 68 pounds.

몸무게가 30킬로그램 쯤 됐어요.

머리카락은 하나도 없었고,

I was bald.

병원에서 준 수술복에,

I was wearing hospital scrubs.

누군가 기부한 운동화를 신고 있었어요.

And somebody donated tennis shoes for me.

And I had a white cane in one hand

한 손엔 하얀색 지팡이를 짚고 있었고,

다른 쪽 손엔 서류가방 가득 병원기록들을 들고 있었지요.

and a suitcase full of medical records in another hand.

그래서 이 노인분들이 생각한게,

So the senior citizens realized

that they needed to have an emergency meeting.

비상회의 소집이였어요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So they pulled back and they were looking at each other,

하던 일들을 멈추고 서로 쳐다보면서,

and they were going, "OK, what skills do we have in this room?

"좋아, 이 방에 있는 우리가 가진 기술들이 무엇이지?" 하고 말했어요.

This kid needs a lot of work."

"얘 손이 아주 많이 가겠어."

So they eventually started matching their talents and skills

그래서 결국 시작한 것이

그 각자 기술과 재능들을 맞춰보는 것이었어요.

저 한테 필요한 것들을 찾으려고.

to all of my needs.

그런데 그들이 제일 먼저 해야 했던 건,

But one of the first things they needed to do

당장 저한테 필요한게 무엇인지를 찾아내는 거였지요.

was assess what I needed right away.

저는 이제 하나 하나 다시 배워야 했어요.

I needed to figure out how to eat like a normal human being,

정상적으로 먹는 방법을요

since I'd been eating through a tube in my chest

왜냐면 그 동안 음식섭취는 가슴에 심어진 관을 통해서,

그리고 혈관을 통해서만 해왔었기 때문이지요

and through my veins.

So I had to go through trying to eat again.

그래서 다시 정상적으로 먹는 방법을 다시 배워야 했어요.

And they went through that process.

그 노인분들이 그 과정을 겪도록 도와줬어요.

다음에 또 생각해 내야 했던 건,

And then they had to figure out:

"Well, she needs furniture.

"가구가 필요하겠어.

She is sleeping in the corner of this apartment."

아파트 한 구석에서 자고 있잖아."

So they went to their storage lockers

그래서 다들 창고로 내려가서,

and all gathered their extra furniture --

쓰지않던 가구들을 모아서

gave me pots and pans, blankets --

솥, 냄비, 이불 등 저한테 가져다 줬어요.

모든 필요했던 모든 것들을요.

everything.

And then the next thing that I needed

다음으로 저한테 필요했던 건,

바로 변신이었어요.

was a makeover.

(Laughter)

초록색 수술복은 없어지고,

So out went the green scrubs,

꽃무늬와 나일롱 들이 새로 생겼어요.

and in came the polyester and floral prints.

(웃음)

(Laughter)

We're not going to talk about the hairstyles

그 노인분들이 하려고 했던 머리모양까지는 얘기하지 말도록 하지요.

they tried to force on me once my hair grew back.

일단 제 머리가 자란 후에 말이죠

파란색 머리는 안 한다고 하긴 했어요.

But I did say no to the blue hair.

(웃음)

(Laughter)

So eventually, what went on is,

그리고 또 다음으로 벌어진 일은,

말하는 걸 다시 배워야 한다고 결정했어요.

they decided that, well, I need to learn to speak.

독자적인 사람이 될 수가 없는거잖아요

You can't be an independent person

말도 못하고, 사물을 볼 수 없다면 말이에요.

if you're not able to speak and you can't see.

So they figured not being able to see is one thing,

그래서 그 노인분들은 안 보인는건 그렇다치더라도,

but they need to get me to talk.

말은 할 수 있어야 한다고 생각했지요.

So while Sally, the office manager,

양로원 관리자였던 쌜리는

was teaching me to speak in the day --

그날부터 말하는 걸 가르치기 시작했어요.

it's hard, because when you're a kid, you take things for granted.

힘들지요... 어렸을 적엔

모든 걸 그냥 자연스럽고

You learn things unconsciously.

무의식 중에 배우게 되잖아요.

But for me, I was an adult and it was embarrassing,

하지만 전 다 큰 어른이었고, 그게 너무 창피했어요.

또 제 몸을 제대로 맞춰서 조정하는 법을 다시 익혀야 했지요.

and I had to learn how to coordinate my new throat with my tongue

새로 받은 식도와 혀,

and my new teeth and my lips,

새 치아하고 입술,

and capture the air and get the word out.

그리고 숨을 들이 마시고 말을 내 뱉는 것들을요.

So, I acted like a two-year-old,

그래서 저는 두 살짜리 아이처럼 굴었고,

and refused to work.

말하는걸 배우는 일을 거부했지요.

그런데, 남자 분들이 기발한 생각이 있었어요.

But the men had a better idea.

They were going to make it fun for me.

재미를 더하려고 했던 거에요.

그래서 밤마다 욕으로만 된 낱말맞추기를 가르치기 시작했어요.

So they were teaching me cuss-word Scrabble at night.

(웃음)

(Laughter)

그리고 몰래,

And then, secretly, how to swear like a sailor.

거친 뱃사람들처럼 욕하는 법을 가르쳐 줬어요.

(Laughter)

그래서 저는 여러분의 상상에 맡깁니다

I'm going to just leave it to your imagination

as to what my first words were --

쌜리가 저한테 자신감을 많이 심어줬을 때

(Laughter)

when Sally finally got my confidence built.

제가 뱉은 처음의 단어들이 뭐였었는지 말이죠

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So I moved on from there.

이제 다음 단계로 계속 넘어갔어요.

And a former teacher who happened to have Alzheimer's

그리고 치매로 고생하시던 전직 선생님 한 분은

took on the task of teaching me to write.

쓰는 법을 가르쳐 주셨어요.

The redundancy was actually good for me.

반복은 실제로 도움이 많이 되었어요

So, we'll just keep moving on.

그래서 우리는 그렇게 계속할 것이었던거죠

(Laughter)

(웃음)

아주 중요했던 순간 중 하나는

One of the pivotal times for me

was actually learning to cross the street again

길 건너는 방법을 다시 배울 때 였어요.

as a blind person.

그 땐 눈이 보이지 않았으니까요.

눈을 한번 감아보세요.

So close your eyes.

Now imagine you have to cross a street.

그리고 길을 건너야 한다고 생각해보세요.

도로가 얼마가 먼 거리인지 모르고,

You don't know how far that street is,

똑바로 가고 있는지도 모르고,

and you don't know if you're going straight.

And you hear cars whizzing back and forth,

주위에 차들이 앞뒤로 씽씽 달리는 소리는 들리고,

바로 지금 이 상황으로 만들었던

and you had a horrible accident

that landed you in this situation.

아주 끔찍한 사고를 전에 당했다고 생각해보세요

So there were two obstacles I had to get through.

그러니까, 제게는 넘어야할 장애가 두개가 있었지요.

One was post-traumatic stress disorder.

하나는 외상 후 정신적 장애였어요.

항상 길 가장자리만 가면

Every time I approached the corner or the curb,

I would panic.

공황상태로 어쩔줄을 모르게 되고

And the second one

두번째는,

was actually trying to figure out how to cross that street.

실제로 길을 건너는 방법을 익히는 거였어요.

So one of the seniors just came up to me,

한 노인분은 저한테 다가와서,

and she pushed me up to the corner and said,

저를 길 가장자리에 세워놓고 말하기를,

"네 생각에 갈 떄가 되었다고 생각할 때, 그 지팡이를 그곳으로 내밀어봐.

"When you think it's time to go, just stick the cane out there.

그게 부딛치면, 거리를 건너지 마."

If it's hit, don't cross the street."

(Laughter)

(웃음)

완전히 타당한 말이었어요

Made perfect sense.

(Laughter)

그런데, 한 세번째 지팡이가

But by the third cane that went whizzing across the road --

길 어딘가로 날아가 버렸을 때

(Laughter)

노인분들이 리소스를 좀 합쳐보아야 한다는 걸 깨달아서

they realized that they needed to put their resources together,

기금을 조성하여

and they raised funds

so that I could go to the Braille Institute

제가 맹인학교에 갈 수 있게 되어

and actually gain the skills to be a blind person,

장님으로서

실제로 필요한 기술을 익힐수 있도록

그리고 제 인생을 변형시킨

and also to go get a guide dog,

맹인견을 구할 수 있게 해 주었지요

who transformed my life.

그래서 이제 다시 대학교로 돌아갈 수 있었어요

And I was able to return to college

저한테 아낌없이 투자했던 노인분들 덕분에

because of the senior citizens who invested in me,

and also the guide dog and skill set I had gained.

그리고 또한 그 맹인견과 제가 익혔던 기술들 덕분에요.

Ten years later, I gained my sight back.

10년 후에 시력을 되찾았어요.

마술처럼은 아니었답니다

Not magically --

제가 세 가지 수술을 받기로 동의했고

I opted in for three surgeries,

그 중 하나는 아주 실험적인 거였어요.

and one of them was experimental.

로보트 수술이었지요.

It was actually robotic surgery

that removed a hematoma from behind my eye.

제 눈 뒤쪽에 있던 혈종을 제거해 냈어요.

저한테 가장 큰 변화는

The biggest change for me was that the world moved forward,

세상이 너무 많이 진보해 있었던 거에요.

그곳에는 혁신과

that there were innovations and all kinds of new things --

아주 여러가지의 새로운 것들이 있었습니다--

휴대전화, 노트북컴퓨터,

cellphones, laptops,

이런 모든것들을 저는 전에는 한번도 보지 못 했던답니다

all these things that I had never seen before.

And as a blind person,

맹인으로서

your visual memory fades,

시각적 기억은 서서히 사라지고,

사물에 관해서 어떻게 느끼는지

and is replaced with how you feel about things

사물이 어떻게 소리를 내는지

and how things sound

또 사물이 어떻게 냄새가 나는지로 대체가 됩니다

and how things smell.

So one day, I was in my room

그래서 하루는 제 방에 있는데,

방 한 쪽에 놓여있는 무엇인가를 제가 보았습니다

and I saw this thing sitting in my room.

그래서 제가 생각하길 괴물이라고 생각했죠

I thought it was a monster,

so I was walking around it.

그래서 제가 그 주변을 걸어다녔죠

And I go, "I'm just going to touch it."

그러다가 제가 말하길, "그냥 만져보겠어" 라고 하고

And I touched it and I went,

만져보고 나서 한 말이

"Oh my God, it's a laundry basket."

"맙소사, 빨래바구니잖아."

(웃음)

(Laughter)

눈이 보일때는

Everything is different when you're a sighted person,

모든게 달라보입니다

외냐면 그건 아주 당연하게 여기는것이니까요.

because you take that for granted.

하지만, 눈이 보이지 않으면,

But when you're blind, you have the tactile memory for things.

사물에 대해 촉각의 기억을 가지게 됩니다

제게 가장 큰 변화는 제 손을 내려다 보면서

The biggest change for me was looking down at my hands

and seeing that I'd lost 10 years of my life.

10년이란 세월을 제가 잃었다는 걸 목격하는 것이었지요

I thought that time had stood still for some reason

저는 어떤 이유로 시간이 멈춰서

and moved on for family and friends.

식구들이나 친구들에게 옮겨갔다고 생각했어요

But when I looked down,

하지만, 손을 내려다 봤을 때

I realized that time marched on for me, too,

그 세월이 저한테도 행진하여 왔었다는걸 깨달았습니다

and that I needed to get caught up.

그래서 저는 그 세월을 만회해야 했고,

So I got going on it.

그래서, 만회를 하기 시작했어요.

'크라우드소싱' 이나 '급진적 협력' 이란 말들은 없었어요.

We didn't have words like "crowdsourcing" and "radical collaboration"

제가 사고를 당했을 때는 말이에요.

when I had my accident.

그런데 그 개념은 사실적으로 적용되었습니다

But the concept held true --

people working with people to rebuild me;

저를 재활시키는데 함께 일했던 분들,

people working with people to reeducate me.

저를 다시 가르치느라 함께 일했던 분들이죠

아마 이 자리에 서지 못했겠지요.

I wouldn't be standing here today

만약 이 극단적인 '급진적 협력'이 아니었다면 말이지요

if it wasn't for extreme radical collaboration.
