So, I kind of believe that we're in like the "cave-painting" era of computer interfaces.

Like, they're very kind of -- they don't go as deep or as emotionally engaging as they possibly could be

OK. So I mean, this is the kind of status quo interface, right?

It's very flat, kind of rigid.

Het is heel plat, nogal stijf.

And OK, so you could sex it up and like go to a much more lickable Mac,

Natuurlijk, opleuken kan altijd, zoals bij de wat sexier Mac wel gebeurt,

you know, but really it's the kind of same old crap we've had for the last,

maar eigenlijk is er op dit gebied geen donder veranderd in de laatste

you know, 30 years.

Like I think we really put up with a lot of crap with our computers.

Echt, ik vind dat we veel te veel suffe zooi op onze computers moeten dulden.

I mean it's point and click, it's like the menus, icons, it's all the kind of same thing.

Menu's, pictogrammen, het is allemaal hetzelfde: aanwijzen en klikken.

And so one kind of information space that I take inspiration from is my real desk.

Waar ik zelf veel inspiratie uit haal is mijn eigen bureau.

It's so much more subtle, so much more visceral

De informatiebronnen op mijn bureau zijn veel subtieler, instinctmatig geordend

-- you know, what's visible, what's not.

Tastbaarder - je weet wat er is, en wat niet.

And I'd like to bring that experience to the desktop.

Die ervaring wil ik graag overbrengen op het bureaublad van computers.

So I kind of have a -- this is BumpTop.

Daarom heb ik de BumpTop ontwikkeld.

It's kind of like a new approach to desktop computing.

Dit is een heel nieuwe aanpak van het vertrouwde bureaublad.

So you can bump things -- they're all physically, you know, manipulable and stuff.

Dingen kunnen tegen elkaar aan botsen, zijn tastbaarder. Je kunt ze manipuleren,

And instead of that point and click, it's like a push and pull,

in plaats van aanwijzen en klikken ben je meer aan het duwen en trekken.

things collide as you'd expect them. Just like on my real desk,

I can -- let me just grab these guys -- I can turn things into piles

Kijk, je kunt bijvoorbeeld mappen op stapels leggen,

instead of just the folders that we have.

in tegenstelling tot de doorsnee computermap.

And once things are in a pile I can browse them by throwing them into a grid,

or you know, flip through them like a book

or I can lay them out like a deck of cards.

When they're laid out, I can pull things to new locations or delete things

or just quickly sort a whole pile, you know, just immediately, right?

And then, it's all smoothly animated, instead of these jarring changes you see in today's interfaces.

Also, if I want to add something to a pile, well, how do I do that?

Ook kun je iets op een stapel leggen, heel simpel, kijk:

I just toss it to the pile, and it's added right to the top. It's a kind of nice way.

Also some of the stuff we can do is,

for these individual icons we thought -- I mean,

individuele pictogrammen. We wilden

how can we play with the idea of an icon, and push that further?

daar wat meer mee doen, en hebben dus wat trucjes bedacht.

And one of the things I can do is make it bigger

Zo kan ik ze bijvoorbeeld groter maken om

if I want to emphasize it and make it more important.

aan te geven dat iets heel belangrijk is.

But what's really cool is that since there's a physics simulation running under this,

it's actually heavier. So the lighter stuff doesn't really move

but if I throw it at the lighter guys, right?

So it's cute, but it's also like a subtle channel of conveying information, right?

This is heavy so it feels more important. So it's kind of cool.

Despite computers everywhere paper really hasn't disappeared,

Ondanks de alomtegenwoordigheid van computers is papier niet echt uit ons leven verdwenen.

because it has a lot of, I think, valuable properties.

Papier heeft namelijk toch wel veel waardevolle eigenschappen.

And some of those we wanted to transfer to the icons in our system.

Een deel daarvan wilden we daarom graag overbrengen op de pictogrammen in ons systeem.

So one of the things you can do to our icons, just like paper, is crease them and fold them,

Zo kun je onze pictogrammen bijvoorbeeld net zoals papier verkreukelen, vouwen.

just like paper. Remember, you know, something for later.

Een ezelsoor, zeg maar, als geheugensteuntje.

Or if you want to be destructive, you can just crumple it up

Je kunt er ook wat aggressiever mee omgaan en ze verfrommelen,

and, you know, toss it to the corner.

en in een hoekje gooien.

Also just like paper, around our workspace

Verder kun je, net als op een echte werkplek,

we'll pin things up to the wall to remember them later,

dingen in het zicht aan de muur prikken om ze niet te vergeten.

and I can do the same thing here,

Dat kan ik hier ook doen.

and you know, you'll see post-it notes and things like that around people's offices.

Veel mensen werken op die manier, met post-its enzovoorts. Dat kan hier ook.

And I can pull them off when I want to work with them.

En je kunt ze er dan afhalen als je er mee wilt werken.

So, one of the criticisms of this kind of approach to organization is that,

Een veelgehoorde opmerking over een dergelijke structuur is:

you know, "Okay, well my real desk is really messy. I don't want that mess on my computer."

"Okee, mijn echte bureau is nogal slordig. Maar op mijn computer wil ik die rommel niet."

So one thing we have for that is like a grid align,

Daar hebben we een oplossing voor. Een soort raster,

kind of -- so you get that more traditional desktop. Things are kind of grid aligned.

ongeveer zoals de indeling van een traditioneel bureaublad. Alles wordt dan uitgelijnd op dat raster.

More boring, but you still have that kind of colliding and bumping.

Wel saaier, maar toch heb je nog altijd dat botsen en duwen.

And you can still do fun things like make shelves on your desktop.

En je kunt er nog steeds geinige dingen mee doen, zoals stapelen op planken naast je bureaublad.

Let's just break this shelf. Okay, that shelf broke.

I think beyond the icons, I think another really cool domain for this software --

Naast het gestoei met pictogrammen kun je met deze software ook andere gave dingen doen.

I think it applies to more than just icons and your desktop -- but browsing photographs.

Bijvoorbeeld door foto's bladeren - en ik denk dat dat ook wel buiten het bureaublad toepasbaar is.

I think you can really enrich the way we browse our photographs

We kunnen de manier waarop we door foto's bladeren hiermee echt verrijken.

and bring it to that kind of shoebox of, you know, photos with your family on the kitchen table kind of thing.

Je krijgt dan echt dat gezellige idee van samen rond de keukentafel, met een schoenendoos vol foto's.

I can toss these things around. They're so much more tangible and touchable --

Ik kan de foto's op het blad heen en weer schuiven, opzij leggen. Ze zijn veel echter, tastbaarder.

and you know I can double-click on something to take a look at it.

Als je een foto goed wilt bekijken, dubbelklik je erop.

And I can do all that kind of same stuff I showed you before.

En je kunt ook met foto's alles doen wat ik eerder liet zien.

So I can pile things up, I can flip through it, I can, you know --

Kijk maar: stapelen, erdoorheen bladeren.

okay, let's move this photo to the back, let's delete this guy here,

Een foto naar achteren schuiven, een foto verwijderen, het kan allemaal.

and I think it's just a much more rich kind of way of interacting with your information.

Dit systeem biedt gewoon veel meer interactie met informatie dan gebruikelijk.
