communities where fish yields have diminished;

communities where schoolchildren are unable to go to school

for days, sometimes weeks, on end.

Who would have thought that this plant

with round leaves, inflated stems, and showy, lavender flowers

would cause such havoc in these communities.

ဒီလောက် ဗြောင်းဆန်စေမယ်လို့ ဘယ်သူတွေးမိမှာတုန်း။

The plant is known as water hyacinth

ဒီအပင်ကို ဗေဒါပင်လို့ လူသိများပြီး

and its botanical name, Eichhornia crassipes.

ရုက္ခဗေဒ အမည်ကတော့ Eichhornia crassipes ပါ။

Interestingly, in Nigeria, the plant is also known by other names,

စိတ်ဝင်စားစရာက Nigeria မှာ ဒီအပင်က အခြားအမည်တွေနဲ့ သိနေတာပါ။

names associated with historical events,

ဒဏ္ဍာရီတွေနဲ့ရှိသလို သမိုင်းဝင်အဖြစ်အပျက် တွေနဲ့

as well as myths.

ဆက်စပ် နေတဲ့ အမည်တွေပါ၊

In some places, the plant is called Babangida.

တစ်ချို့နေရာတွေမှာ ဒီအပင်ကို Babangida လို့ခေါ်တယ်။

When you hear Babangida, you remember the military and military coups.

Babangida လို့ကြားတဲ့အခါ စစ်တပ်နဲ့ စစ်တပ် အာဏာသိမ်းမှုတွေကို အမှတ်ရကြပါတယ်။

And you think: fear, restraint.

တွေးမိတာက ကြောက်ရွံ့မှု၊ ချုပ်ထိန်းမှုပါ။

In parts of Nigeria in the Niger Delta, the plant is also known as Abiola.

Niger မြစ်ဝှမ်းက Nigeria ဒေသတွေမှာတော့ ဒီအပင်ကို Abiola လို့ လူသိများတယ်။

When you hear Abiola, you remember annulled elections

Abiola လို့ကြားတဲ့အခါ ဖျက်သိမ်းလိုက်တဲ့ ရွေးကောက်ပွဲတွေကို အမှတ်ရကြပြီး

and you think: dashed hopes.

တွေးမိတာက လွှင့်ပယ်သွားတဲ့ မျှော်လင့်ချက်တွေပေါ့။

In the southwestern part of Nigeria,

Nigeria ရဲ့ အနောက်တောင်ဘက်မှာတော့

the plant is known as Gbe'borun.

ဒီအပင်ကို Gbe'borun လို့ အသိများတယ်။

Gbe'borun is a Yoruba phrase

Gbe'borun ဆိုတာက "အတင်းအဖျင်း"၊

which translates to "gossip," or "talebearer."

တနည်း "စကားသယ်သူ" လို့ ဘာသာပြန်လို့ရတဲ့ Yoruba စကားစုတစ်ခုပါ၊

When you think of gossip, you think: rapid reproduction, destruction.

အတင်းအဖျင်းအကြောင်းဆိုတော့ တွေးမိတာ က ပြန်လည်ထုတ်ပေးခြင်း၊ ဖျက်ဆီးခြင်းပါ။

And in the Igala-speaking part of Nigeria,

Nigeria ရဲ့ Igala စကားပြောတဲ့နေရာတွေမှာ

the plant is known as A Kp'iye Kp'oma,

ဒီအပင်ကို A Kp'iye Kp'oma လို့ အသိများပါတယ်။

And when you hear that, you think of death.

ပြီးတော့ ဒါကိုကြားတဲ့အခါ သေခြင်းတရားကို တွေးမိပါတယ်။

It literally translates to "death to mother and child."

တိုက်ရိုက် ပြန်ဆိုချက်က "မိခင်နဲ့ ကလေးကို သေစေခြင်း" ပါ။

I personally had my encounter with this plant in the year 2009.

၂၀၀၉ ခုမှာ ဒီအပင်နဲ့ ကိုယ်တိုင် ကြုံတွေ့ဖူးခဲ့တယ်။

It was shortly after I had relocated from the US to Nigeria.

ဒါက US ကနေ Nigeria ကို ရုံးပြောင်းတဲ့ ခဏချင်းအတွင်းမှာပါ။

I'd quit my job in corporate America

America ကုမ္ပဏီက အလုပ်ကိုထွက်လိုက်ပြီး

and decided to take this big leap of faith,

ဒီထူးခြားစွန့်စားတဲ့ စိတ်ကူးကို လုပ်ဖို့ ဆုံးဖြတ်လိုက်တယ်။

a leap of faith that came out of a deep sense of conviction

that there was a lot of work to do in Nigeria

in the area of sustainable development.

And so here I was in the year 2009,

actually, at the end of 2009,

တကယ်က ၂၀၀၉ အကုန်မှာပါ၊

in Lagos on the Third Mainland Bridge.

Third Mainland Bridge ပေါ်က Lagos မှာပါ။

And I looked to my left and saw this very arresting image.

ဘယ်ဘက်ကို ကြည့်လိုက်တော့ အရမ်း ဖမ်းစားတဲ့ ဒီပုံရိပ်ကို မြင်ခဲ့တယ်။

It was an image of fishing boats

ဒါက ထူထပ် ကျပ်ခဲနေတဲ့

that had been hemmed in by dense mats of water hyacinth.

ဗေဒါပင်တွေကြောင့် ပိတ်မိနေတဲ့ ငါးဖမ်းလှေတွေရဲ့ ပုံပါ။

And I was really pained by what I saw

မြင်လိုက်ရတာကြောင့် တကယ်ကို နာကျင်သွားမိတာက

because I thought to myself,

ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကို တွေ့မိလိုက်တာက

"These poor fisherfolk,

"ဒီ ဆင်းရဲသား တံငါသည်တွေ၊

how are they going to go about their daily activities

ဒီကန့်သတ်မှုတွေနဲ့ နေ့စဉ်ဘဝ လုပ်ဆ​ောင်မှုတွေကို

with these restrictions."

ဘယ်လိုများ လုပ်ကြမလဲ" လို့ပါ။

And then I thought, "There's got to be a better way."

ပြီတော့ "ပိုကောင်းတဲ့ နည်းလမ်းရှိဖို့ လိုပြီ"လို့ တွေးမိတယ်။

A win-win solution whereby the environment is taken care of

နှစ်ဘက်လှ ဖြေရှင်းချက်ဖြစ်တဲ့ လမ်း ကြောင်းကနေ ဒီမှော်ပင်တွေကို

by the weeds being cleared out of the way

ရှင်းလိုက်ခြင်းအားဖြင့် ပတ်ဝန်းကျင်ကို

and then this being turned into an economic benefit

စောင့်ရှောက်ခြင်းနဲ့ မှော်ပင်ပွားတာ ကြောင့် အများဆုံး

for the communities whose lives are impacted the most

ထိခိုက်နေတဲ့ ရပ်ရွာတွေကလူတွေရဲ့ ဘဝတွေအတွက် စီးပွားရေး

by the infestation of the weed.

အကျိုးကျေးဇူး အသွင် ပြောင်းလိုက်တာပါ။

That, I would say, was my spark moment.

ဒါက ကျွန်မရဲ့ လင်းလက်သွားတဲ့ ကာလလို့ ပြောရမှာပါ။

And so I did further research to find out more

ဒါနဲ့ ဒီမှော်ပင်တွေရဲ့ အကျိုးပြုတဲ့ အသုံးတွေကို

about the beneficial uses of this weed.

ပိုရှာတွေ့ဖို့ သုသေသနပြုခဲ့တယ်။

Out of the several, one struck me the most.

အများကြီးထဲကမှ ကျွန်မကို ခိုက်သွားစေတဲ့ တစ်ခုက

It was the use of the plant for handicrafts.

ဒီအပင်ကို လက်မှုပစ္စည်းတွေအတွက် အသုံးပြုတာပါ။

And I thought, "What a great idea."

"ကောင်းလိုက်တဲ့ အကြံပဲ"လို့ တွေးမိတယ်။

Personally, I love handicrafts,

ကျွန်မသဘောအရ လက်မှုပစ္စည်းတွေကို ကြိုက်တယ်၊

especially handicrafts that are woven around a story.

အထူးသဖြင့် ပုံပြင်တစ်ခုကို ဝန်းရံ ရက်ထားတဲ့ လက်မှုပစ္စည်းတွေပေါ့။

And so I thought, "This could be easily deployed within the communities

ဒါနဲ့ "ဒါဟာ လူမှုအဖွဲ့အစည်းတွေ အတွင်းမှာ နည်းပညာ ကျွမ်းကျင်မှုတွေ မပါဘဲနဲ့

without the requirement of technical skills."

And I thought to myself, "Three simple steps to a mega solution."

" ဒါတွေဟာ ဧရာမ အဖြေ အတွက် ရိုးစင်းတဲ့ ခြေလှမ်းတွေ"လို့ ကိုယ့်ဘာသာတွေးမိတယ်။

First step: Get out into the waterways and harvest the water hyacinth.

ပထမအဆင့်၊ ရေလမ်းကြောင်းတွေထဲကို သွားပြီး ဗေဒါတွေကို ရိတ်သိမ်းတာပါ။

That way, you create access.

ဒီနည်းက အခွင့်အလမ်းကို ဖန်တီးတာပေါ့။

Secondly, you dry the water hyacinth stems.

ဒုတိယအနေနဲ့ ဗေဒါရိုးတွေကို အခြောက်လှန်းတာပါ။

And thirdly, you weave the water hyacinth into products.

တတိယက ဗေဒါတွေကို ထုတ်ကုန်အဖြစ် ရက်လုပ်တာပါ။

The third step was a challenge.

တတိယအဆင့်က စိန်ခေါ်မှုတစ်ခုပါ။

See, I'm a computer scientist by background

နောက်ခံအနေနဲ့ ကျွန်မက ကွန်ပြူတာ သိပ္ပံပညာရှင်ဖြစ်ပြီး

and not someone in the creative arts.

ဖန်တီးတဲ့ အနုပညာရှင် တစ်ယောက်မဟုတ်ဘူး။

And so I began my quest

ဒီတော့ ဘယ်လို ရက်လုပ်တယ်ဆိုတာ

to find out how I can learn how to weave.

သိရအောင် စတင် စူးစမ်းတယ်။

And this quest took me to a community in Ibadan, where I lived,

ဒီရှာဖွေမှုက ကျွန်မကို က Sabo လို့ခေါ် တဲ့ ကျွန်နေတဲ့ Ibadan က လူမှုအဖွဲ့အစည်း

called Sabo.

တစ်ခုဆီ ခေါ်သွားတယ်။

Sabo translates to "strangers' quarters."

Sabo ကို "သူစိမ်း ရပ်ကွက်"လို့ ပြန်ဆိုပါတယ်

And the community is predominantly made up of people

from the northern part of the country.

So I literally took my dried weeds in hand,

ဒီတော့ မှော်ပင်ခြောက်တွေကို တကယ့်ကို လက်ထဲကိုင် ယူလာခဲ့တယ်၊

there were several more of them,

ဒီထက်အများကြီး ပိုများခဲ့ပြီး

and went knocking from door to door to find out who could teach me

ဒီကြာပင်တွေကို ကြိုးကျစ်ဖို့ ဘယ်သူ ကိုယ့်ကိုသင်ပေးနိုင်မလဲဆိုပြီး

how to weave these water hyacinth stems into ropes.

အိမ်ပေါက်စေ့ တံခါးဆက်ခေါက်ခဲ့တယ်။

And I was directed to the shed of Malam Yahaya.

ကျွန်မကို Mariam Yahaya တို့ရဲ့ ရုံကို သွားဖို့လမ်းညွန်ခဲ့တယ်။

The problem, though, is that Malam Yahaya doesn't speak English

ဒါပေမဲ့ ပြဿနာက Mariam Yahaya တို့က အင်္ဂလိပ်လို မပြောဘူး၊

and neither did I speak Hausa.

ကျွန်မကလည်း Huasa စကား မပြောတတ်ဘူးလေ။

But some little kids came to the rescue

and helped translate.

ဝိုင်းကူ ဘာသာပြန်ပေးကြတယ်။

And that began my journey of learning how to weave

ဒါက ကျွန်မရဲ့ ရက်လုပ်နည်း သင်ယူခြင်း ခရီးစတင်ခဲ့ပြီး

and transform these dried water hyacinth stems

ဒီဗေဒါရိုးခြောက်တွေကို ကြိုးရှည်တွေအဖြစ်

into long ropes.

ပြောင်းလဲခဲ့တာပေါ့။

With my long ropes in hand,

လက်ထဲက ကြိုးရှည်တွေနဲ့

I was now equipped to make products.

ထုတ်ကုန်တွေ ဖန်တီးဖို့ အခု ပစ္စည်းစုံသွားတာပေါ့။

And that was the beginning of partnerships.

ပြီတော့ ဒါက အစုစပ်လုပ်ငန်းရဲ့ နိဒါန်းပဲပေါ့။

Working with rattan basket makers to come up with products.

ထုတ်ကုန်တွေရလာဖို့ ကြိမ်ထည် ရက်လုပ်သူ​တွေနဲ့ တွဲလုပ်တာပါ။

So with this in hand, I felt confident

ဒီတော့ ဒါလက်ထဲမှာ ရှိပြီဆိုတော့ ဒီဗဟုသုတကို

that I would be able to take this knowledge

မြစ်ကမ်းဘ​ေးနေ လူမှုအဖွဲ့အစည်းတွေဆီ

back into the riverine communities

ပြန်ပေးနိုင်ကာ သူတို့ရဲ့ ဒုက္ခကို

and help them to transform their adversity into prosperity.

ကြီးပွားခြင်းအဖြစ် ပြောင်းလဲဖို့ ကူညီ နိုင်လိမ့်မယ်လို့ ယုံကြည်မိသွားတယ်။

So taking these weeds and actually weaving them

ဒါနဲ့ ဒီမှော်ပင်တွေကိုယူပြီး ရောင်းလို့ ရတဲ့ ထုတ်ကုန်တွေအဖြစ်

into products that can be sold.

တကယ်ကို ရက်လုပ်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။

So we have pens, we have tableware,

ဒါနဲ့ ကျွန်မတို့မှာ ဘောပင်တွေ၊ ပန်းကန်ခွက်ယောက်တွေ ရှိတယ်။

we have purses, we have tissue boxes.

ပိုက်ဆံအိတ်တွေ၊ တစ်ရှူးဘူးတွေ ရှိတယ်။

Thereby, helping the communities

ဒီနည်းနဲ့ လူမှုအဖွဲ့အစည်းတွေကို ဗေဒါပင်ကို ထူးခြားတဲ့

to see water hyacinth in a different light.

အလင်းရောင်တစ်ခုအဖြစ် သိမြင်ဖို့ ကူညီခြင်းပါ။

Seeing water hyacinth as being valuable,

ဗေဒါပင်ကို အဖိုးတန်တဲ့၊ သုခုမမြောက်တဲ့၊

being aesthetic, being durable, tough, resilient.

တာရှည်ခံ၊ ခိုင်ခံ့ပြီး ဒူပေနာပေခံတာအဖြစ် သိစေခြင်းပါ။

Changing names, changing livelihoods.

အမည်တွေကိုပြောင်းခြင်း၊ အသက်မွေး မှုတွေကို ပြောင်းပေးခြင်းပါ။

From Gbe'borun, gossip,

Gbe'borun အတင်းအဖျင်းကနေ

to Olusotan, storyteller.

Olusotan ပုံပြောသူ လို့ပေါ့။

And from A Kp'iye Kp'oma, which is "killer of mother and child,"

ပြီးတော့ A Kp'iye Kp'Oma " မိခင်နဲ့ ကလေးကို သတ်သူ" ဆိုတာကနေ

to Ya du j'ewn w'Iye kp'Oma,

Ya du j'wlye Kp'Oma ဆိုတဲ့

"provider of food for mother and child."

"မိခင်နဲ့ ကလေးကို အစာထောက်ပံ့သူ " လို့ပါ။

And I'd like to end with a quote by Michael Margolis.

Michael Maegolis ရဲ့ အဆိုအမိန့်လေးနဲ့ နိဂုံးချုပ်ချင်ပါတယ်။

He said, "If you want to learn about a culture, listen to the stories.

သူပြောတာက " ယဉ်ကျေးမှုတစ်ခုအကြောင်း လေ့လာချင်ရင် ပုံပြင်တွေကို နားထောင်ပါ။

And if you want to change a culture, change the stories."

And so, from Makoko community, to Abobiri, to Ewoi,

to Kolo, to Owahwa, Esaba,

Kolo သို့ Owahwa Esaba သို့

we have changed the story.
