fishing, marine transportation

and trading;

방해받고

communities where fish yields have diminished;

어획량이 감소했으며

communities where schoolchildren are unable to go to school

학교에 다닐 나이의 아이들이 며칠이나 가끔은 몇 주 동안 계속

for days, sometimes weeks, on end.

학교에 가지 못하는 마을들을요.

Who would have thought that this plant

동그란 잎에 부푼 줄기에

with round leaves, inflated stems, and showy, lavender flowers

화려한 라벤더 꽃을 피우는 이 식물이

would cause such havoc in these communities.

마을에 이렇게 큰 재앙을 가져오리라는 것을 누가 상상이나 했을까요.

The plant is known as water hyacinth

이 식물의 이름은 부레옥잠입니다.

and its botanical name, Eichhornia crassipes.

학명은 에이크호르니아 크라시페스입니다.

Interestingly, in Nigeria, the plant is also known by other names,

흥미롭게도, 나이지리아에서 이 식물에겐

names associated with historical events,

역사적 사건 및 신화와 관련된

as well as myths.

다른 이름들이 더 있습니다.

In some places, the plant is called Babangida.

일부 지역에서는 부레옥잠을 바방기다라고 부릅니다.

When you hear Babangida, you remember the military and military coups.

바방기다라는 이름을 들으면 군대와 군사 쿠데타가 기억나고

And you think: fear, restraint.

두려움과 억압을 생각하실 겁니다.

In parts of Nigeria in the Niger Delta, the plant is also known as Abiola.

When you hear Abiola, you remember annulled elections

아비올라를 들으면 무효화된 선거가 기억나고

and you think: dashed hopes.

부서졌던 희망이 떠오르죠.

In the southwestern part of Nigeria,

나이지리아 남서쪽에서는

the plant is known as Gbe'borun.

이 식물이 베보룬이라고 불립니다.

Gbe'borun is a Yoruba phrase

요루바어인데

which translates to "gossip," or "talebearer."

"소문"이나 "소문을 퍼뜨리는 자" 라는 뜻입니다.

When you think of gossip, you think: rapid reproduction, destruction.

소문을 생각하면 빠른 확산과 파괴가 떠오르니까요.

And in the Igala-speaking part of Nigeria,

이갈라어를 쓰는 나이지리아 지역에선

the plant is known as A Kp'iye Kp'oma,

이 식물을 아피에포마라고 부릅니다.

And when you hear that, you think of death.

이 이름을 들으면 죽음이 떠오릅니다.

It literally translates to "death to mother and child."

직역하면 "엄마와 아이의 죽음" 이라는 뜻이거든요.

I personally had my encounter with this plant in the year 2009.

저는 개인적으로 2009년에 부레옥잠을 보게 되었습니다.

It was shortly after I had relocated from the US to Nigeria.

미국에서 나이지리아로 옮겨간 지 얼마 되지 않았을 때였죠.

I'd quit my job in corporate America

저는 미국 기업이던 직장에 사직서를 내고

and decided to take this big leap of faith,

믿음을 가지고 큰 발걸음을 내딛었습니다.

a leap of faith that came out of a deep sense of conviction

나이지리아에 지속가능한 개발을 위해

that there was a lot of work to do in Nigeria

해야하는 일이 많다는 깊은 확신에서

in the area of sustainable development.

나온 믿음이었습니다.

And so here I was in the year 2009,

actually, at the end of 2009,

정확히 말하자면 2009년 말에

in Lagos on the Third Mainland Bridge.

And I looked to my left and saw this very arresting image.

It was an image of fishing boats

that had been hemmed in by dense mats of water hyacinth.

And I was really pained by what I saw

because I thought to myself,

"These poor fisherfolk,

how are they going to go about their daily activities

with these restrictions."

And then I thought, "There's got to be a better way."

그리고 저는 생각했습니다. "분명 더 좋은 방법이 있을거야."

A win-win solution whereby the environment is taken care of

잡초들이 길을 더 이상 막지 않으면서

by the weeds being cleared out of the way

이 잡초로 인해 가장 타격을 많이 받는

and then this being turned into an economic benefit

지역사회에 오히려 경제적 이득을 가져다 줄 수 있는 방식으로

for the communities whose lives are impacted the most

환경 문제가 해결될 수 있는

by the infestation of the weed.

서로에게 윈윈인 해결책 말이죠.

That, I would say, was my spark moment.

그게 저한테 아이디어가 떠오른 순간이었습니다.

And so I did further research to find out more

그래서 저는 부레옥잠의 유용한 용도를 더 알아내기 위해

about the beneficial uses of this weed.

더 깊이 연구했습니다.

Out of the several, one struck me the most.

It was the use of the plant for handicrafts.

And I thought, "What a great idea."

Personally, I love handicrafts,

especially handicrafts that are woven around a story.

And so I thought, "This could be easily deployed within the communities

without the requirement of technical skills."

And I thought to myself, "Three simple steps to a mega solution."

First step: Get out into the waterways and harvest the water hyacinth.

That way, you create access.

And thirdly, you weave the water hyacinth into products.

The third step was a challenge.

See, I'm a computer scientist by background

저는 컴퓨터 공학자이지

and not someone in the creative arts.

창조예술에는 조예가 없거든요.

And so I began my quest

to find out how I can learn how to weave.

알아내기 위한 여정을 떠났습니다.

And this quest took me to a community in Ibadan, where I lived,

called Sabo.

Sabo translates to "strangers' quarters."

And the community is predominantly made up of people

from the northern part of the country.

So I literally took my dried weeds in hand,

there were several more of them,

and went knocking from door to door to find out who could teach me

how to weave these water hyacinth stems into ropes.

And I was directed to the shed of Malam Yahaya.

The problem, though, is that Malam Yahaya doesn't speak English

and neither did I speak Hausa.

저도 하우사어를 못한다는 것이었습니다.

But some little kids came to the rescue

다행히 몇몇 꼬마 아이들이

and helped translate.

통역을 도와주었습니다.

And that began my journey of learning how to weave

부레옥잠 줄기를 엮어서

and transform these dried water hyacinth stems

긴 밧줄로 만드는 방법을 배우는 제 여정은

into long ropes.

그렇게 시작되었습니다.

With my long ropes in hand,

이제 긴 밧줄 모양을 손에 넣었으니

I was now equipped to make products.

물건을 만들 준비가 돼 있었습니다.

And that was the beginning of partnerships.

동업 관계도 맺기 시작하였습니다.

Working with rattan basket makers to come up with products.

등나무 바구니 제작자들과 함께 제품을 구상하면서 말이죠.

So with this in hand, I felt confident

이걸 갖춘 상태에서

that I would be able to take this knowledge

저는 이 지식을 강가 마을에 전해주어

back into the riverine communities

and help them to transform their adversity into prosperity.

바꾸는 것을 도울 수 있을거라 확신했습니다.

So taking these weeds and actually weaving them

부레옥잠을 엮어서 팔 수 있는 물건으로

into products that can be sold.

만들어서 말이죠.

So we have pens, we have tableware,

그래서 우리는 펜이나 식기

we have purses, we have tissue boxes.

지갑과 휴지 케이스 등을 만들었습니다.

Thereby, helping the communities

to see water hyacinth in a different light.

부레옥잠을 다르게 볼 수 있도록 도왔죠.

Seeing water hyacinth as being valuable,

가치있고,

being aesthetic, being durable, tough, resilient.

아름답고, 견고하고, 질기고, 탄력있는 것으로 말입니다.

Changing names, changing livelihoods.

이름도 바꾸고 생계 수단도 바꾸는 겁니다.

From Gbe'borun, gossip,

소문을 뜻하는 베보룬에서

to Olusotan, storyteller.

이야기꾼을 뜻하는 올루슈탄으로,

And from A Kp'iye Kp'oma, which is "killer of mother and child,"

"엄마와 아기를 죽이는 자"인 아피에포마에서

to Ya du j'ewn w'Iye kp'Oma,

"엄마와 아기에게 음식을 주는 자"를 뜻하는

"provider of food for mother and child."

야두젠위포마로요.

And I'd like to end with a quote by Michael Margolis.

이제 마이클 마골리스의 말을 인용하면서 마치려 합니다.

He said, "If you want to learn about a culture, listen to the stories.

그가 말하길, "어떤 문화에 대해 배우고 싶다면, 이야기를 듣고

And if you want to change a culture, change the stories."

And so, from Makoko community, to Abobiri, to Ewoi,
