I've created a concept called "Day to Night"

and I believe it's going to change

the way you look at the world.

I know it has for me.

My process begins by photographing iconic locations,

I photograph from a fixed vantage point, and I never move.

I capture the fleeting moments of humanity and light as time passes.

Photographing for anywhere from 15 to 30 hours

I am essentially a street photographer from 50 feet in the air,

Day to Night is a global project,

and my work has always been about history.

I'm fascinated by the concept of going to a place like Venice

I am a relentless collector of magical moments.

And the thing that drives me is the fear of just missing one of them.

The entire concept came about in 1996.

LIFE Magazine commissioned me to create a panoramic photograph

I got to the set and realized: it's a square.

So the only way I could actually create a panoramic was to shoot a collage

of 250 single images.

when I do these pictures.

To start with, you have to understand that to get views like this,

most of my time is spent up high, and I'm usually in a cherry picker

So this is a typical day, 12-18 hours, non-stop

One of the things that's great is I love to people-watch.

this is the greatest seat in the house to have.

But this is really how I go about creating these photographs.

So once I decide on my view and the location,

And that's what I call the time vector.

Einstein described time as a fabric.

Think of the surface of a trampoline:

it warps and stretches with gravity.

I see time as a fabric as well,

except I take that fabric and flatten it, compress it into single plane.

One of the unique aspects of this work is also,

if you look at all my pictures,

the time vector changes:

sometimes I'll go left to right,

sometimes front to back, up or down, even diagonally.

I am exploring the space-time continuum

Now when I do these pictures,

I build a photograph based on time,

This can take us several months to complete.

The fun thing about this work is

I have absolutely zero control when I get up there

It's at the end of the process,

I'm compressing the day and night

creating a unique harmony between these two very discordant worlds.

Painting has always been a really important influence in all my work

and I've always been a huge fan of Albert Bierstadt,

the great Hudson River School painter.

He inspired a recent series that I did on the National Parks.

I photographed for over 30 hours in this picture.

I was literally on the side of a cliff,

I actually had a photocopy of Bierstadt's painting in my pocket.

And when that sun started to rise in the valley,

I started to literally shake with excitement

about the medium of photography.

It's about landscape,

There's so many challenging aspects when I create photographs like this.

For this particular photograph,

I was in a 50-foot scissor lift up in the air

So every time my assistant and I shifted our weight,

ဒီတော့ ကျွန်တော့အကူနဲ့ ကျွန်တော်တို့ ဝန်ချိန်ပြောင်းတိုင်း

our horizon line shifted.

အလျားလိုက်လိုင်းဟာ ပြောင်းပါတယ်။

So for every picture you see,

တွေ့ရတဲ့ ပုံတိုင်းပါ ပြောင်းတယ်၊

and there were about 1,800 in this picture,

ဒီပုံမှာ ၁၈၀၀ လောက်ရှိပြီး

we both had to tape our feet into position

ရှပ်တာကို နှိပ်တိုင်း ကျွန်တော်တို့ နှစ်ယောက်လုံးရဲ့

every time I clicked the shutter.

I've learned so many extraordinary things doing this work.

ဒီအလုပ်လုပ်ရင်း ထူးခြားတဲ့ အရာများစွာကို သိမြင်လာခဲ့တယ်။

I think the two most important are patience

ကျွန်တော့အထင် အရေးကြီးဆုံး နှစ်ခုက စိတ်ရှည်ခြင်းနဲ့

and the power of observation.

မြင်တတ်ခြင်းရဲ့ စွမ်းအားပါ။

When you photograph a city like New York from above,

New York လို့ မြို့တစ်မြို့ကို အပေါ်စီးကနေ ရိုက်တဲ့အခါ

I discovered that those people in cars

တွေ့ရှိခဲ့တာက ကျွန်တော်တို့ နေ့စဉ်

that I sort of live with everyday,

အတူနေသလိုမျိုးဖြစ်တဲ့ ကားတွေထဲက လူတွေဟာ

they don't look like people in cars anymore.

ကားတွေထဲက လူတွေနဲ့ မတူတော့တာပါ။

They feel like a giant school of fish,

သူတို့ဟာ ဧရာမ ငါးအုပ်တစ်အုပ်လိုခံစားရတယ်၊

it was a form of emergent behavior.

ဒါက ပေါ်ထွန်းစ အပြုအမူ ပုံစံတစ်ခုပါ။

And when people describe the energy of New York,

လူတွေ New York ရဲ့ စွမ်းအင်ကို သရုပ်ဖော်တဲ့အခါ

I think this photograph begins to really capture that.

ဒီဓာတ်ပုံက ဒါကို တကယ် စတင် ဖမ်းယူတယ်လို့ ထင်တယ်။

When you look closer in my work,

you can see there's stories going on.

You realize that Times Square is a canyon,

Times Square ဟာ ချောက်ကြီးတစ်ခု ဆိုတာ သင် သဘောပေါက်မိတယ်။

it's shadow and it's sunlight.

ဒါဟာ အရိပ်နဲ့ ဒါဟာ နေရောင်ပါ။

So I decided, in this photograph, I would checkerboard time.

So wherever the shadows are, it's night

and wherever the sun is, it's actually day.

Time is this extraordinary thing

အချိန်ဆိုတာက ကျွန်တော်တို့ ခေါင်းတွေ ပတ်လည်မှာ

that we never can really wrap our heads around.

ဘယ်တော့မှ ပတ်ထားလို့ မရနိုင်တဲ့ ထူးဆန်းတဲ့အရာပါ။

But in a very unique and special way,

ဒါပေမဲ့ သိပ်ထူးခြားတဲ့ နည်းတစ်ခုမှာတော့

I believe these photographs begin to put a face on time.

ဒီဓာတ်ပုတွေဟာ အချိန်ပေါ်မှာ မျက်နှာတစ်ခု စတပ်နိုင်တယ်လို့ ယုံကြည်ပါတယ်။

They embody a new metaphysical visual reality.

သူတို့ဟာ သဘာဝဖြစ်တည်မှု အမြင်ပိုင်း ဒိဋ္ဌဖြစ်ရပ်သစ် တစ်ခုကို ပုံဖော်ပါတယ်။

When you spend 15 hours looking at a place,

you're going to see things a little differently

took a picture, and then walked away.

This was a perfect example.

I call it "Sacré-Coeur Selfie."

ဒါကို "Sacré-Coeur Selfie" လို့ခေါ်တယ်

I watched over 15 hours

Sacré- Coeur ကိုတောင် မကြည့်ပဲ

all these people not even look at Sacré-Coeur.

လူတွေကို ၁၅ နာရီကျော် စောင့်ကြည့်ခဲ့တယ်။

They were more interested in using it as a backdrop.

ဒါကို နောက်ခံကားအဖြစ် သုံးဖို့ ပိုစိတ်ဝင်စားကြတယ်။

They would walk up, take a picture,

သူတို့တွေ ကပ်သွားပြီး ဓာတ်ပုံရိုက်ကာ

and then walk away.

နောက်တော့ ထွက်သွားကြတယ်။

And I found this to be an absolutely extraordinary example,

ဒါကို လုံးဝ ထူးခြားတဲ့ ဥပမာတစ်ခု အဖြစ် ကျွန်တော် မြင်မိတယ်။

a powerful disconnect between what we think the human experience is

လူ့အတွေ့အကြုံလို့ ထင်မိတာနဲ့ အပြိုင် လူ့အတွေ့အကြုံ ပြောင်းလဲဖြစ်ပေါ်ခြင်း

versus what the human experience is evolving into.

အကြားက အားကောင်းလှတဲ့ အဆက်အစပ် မကျမှုပါ။

The act of sharing has suddenly become more important

မျှဝေခြင်းရဲ့ လုပ်ဆောင်မှုဟာ အတွေ့အကြုံသက်သက်ထက်

than the experience itself.

And finally, my most recent image,

နောက်ဆုံးအနေနဲ့ ကျွန်တော့အတွက်

which has such a special meaning for me personally:

ပုဂ္ဂိုလ်ရေးအရသိပ်ထူးခြားတဲ့ အဓိပ္ပါယ်ရှိတဲ့ အသစ်ဆုံးပုံပါ။

this is the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.

ဒါက Tanzania က Serengeti National Park ပါ။

And this is photographed in the middle of the Seronera,

ဒါက Seronera ရဲ့အလယ်မှာ ရိုက်ခဲ့တာပါ။

this is not a reserve.

ဒါက သီးသန့်မြေ မဟုတ်ပါဘူး။

I went specifically during the peak migration

ထွေပြားတဲ့ တိရိစ္ဆာန်အစုံလင်ဆုံးကို ရိုက်ဖို့ မျှော်လင့်ပြီး

to hopefully capture the most diverse range of animals.

အမြင့်ဆုံး ပြောင်းရွေ့တဲ့ကာလအတွင်း အသေအချာကို သွားခဲ့တာပါ။

Unfortunately, when we got there,

ကံဆိုးချင်တော့ အဲဒီကို ရောက်ရော

there was a drought going on during the peak migration,

အမြင့်ဆုံး ပြောင်းရွေ့တဲ့ကာလအတွင်း မိုးခေါင်နေပါလေရော၊

a five-week drought.

ငါးပတ်တာ မိုးခေါင်မှုပါ။

So all the animals were drawn to the water.

ဒီတော့ တိရိစ္ဆာန်တွေအားလုံး ရေရှိရာသွားကြတာပေါ့။

I found this one watering hole,

ဒီရေထွက်ပေါက်တစ်ပေါက်ကို တွေ့ပြီး

and felt if everything remained the same way it was behaving,

အရာရာဟာ ဒီအတိုင်း ပြုမူနေတယ်ဆိုရင် ထူးခြားတဲ့ တစ်ခုခုကို ရိုက်ယူဖို့

I had a real opportunity to capture something unique.

တကယ့် အခွင့်အလမ်း ရလိမ့်မယ်လို့ ခံစားမိလိုက်တယ်။

We spent three days studying it,

သုံးရက် အချိန်ကုန်ခံ လေ့လာခဲ့တယ်၊

and nothing could have prepared me

ရိုက်တဲ့နေ့အတွင်း ကိုယ် ဒိဋ္ဌမြင်

for what I witnessed during our shoot day.

I photographed for 26 hours

လေထဲက ၁၈ ပေအမြင့်က အလုံပိတ်စင်ထဲမှာ

in a sealed crocodile blind, 18 feet in the air.

၂၆ နာရီဲကြာ ဓာတ်ပုံရိုက်ခဲ့တယ်။

What I witnessed was unimaginable.

တွေ့မြင်လိုက်ရတာက မတွေးတတ်အောင်ကိုပါ။

Frankly, it was Biblical.

ပြောရရင် သမ္မာကျမ်းလာပဲ။

We saw, for 26 hours,

၂၆ နာရီလုံးလုံး ဒီနိုင်လိုစိတ်ပြင်းတဲ့

all these competitive species share a single resource called water.

မျိုးစိတ်အားလုံး ရေလို့ခေါ်တဲ့ တစ်ခု တည်းသော အရင်းအမြစ်ကို မျှသောက်ကြတယ်။

The same resource that humanity is supposed to have wars over

ဒီအလားတူ အရင်းအမြစ်အတွက်ပဲ နောင်နှစ် ၅၀ အတွင်းမှာ လူ့လောကမှာ

during the next 50 years.

စစ်ပွဲရှိလာမယ်လို့ ဆိုကြတယ်။

The animals never even grunted at each other.

တိရိစ္ဆာန်တွေဟာ အချင်းချင်း ညည်းတောင် မညည်းကြပါဘူး။

They seem to understand something that we humans don't.

ကျွန်တော်တို့ လူသားတွေ နားမလည်တဲ့ တစ်ခုခုကို နားလည်နေပုံရပါတယ်။

That this precious resource called water

ဒီ ရေလို့ဆိုတဲ့ အဖိုးတန် ရင်းမြစ်ဟာ ကျွန်တော်တို့

is something we all have to share.

အားလုံး မျှဝေဖို့လိုတယ်ဆိုတာပါ။

When I created this picture,

ဒီပုံကို ဖန်တီးတော့

I realized that Day to Night is really a new way of seeing,

သဘောပေါက်မိတာက Day to Night ဟာ တကယ့် ရှုမြင်နည်း အသစ်ပါ၊

compressing time,

အချိန်ကို ချုံ့ရင်း

exploring the space-time continuum within a photograph.

ဓာတ်ပုံတစ်ပုံအတွင်းမှာ အာကာသ ကာလဖြစ်စဉ်ကြီးကို စူးစမ်းခြင်းပါ။

As technology evolves along with photography,

ဓာတ်ပုံပညာနှင့်အတူ နည်းပညာ ပြောင်းလဲလာတော့

photographs will not only communicate a deeper meaning of time and memory,

ဓာတ်ပုံတွေဟာ အချိန်နဲ့ မှတ်မိမှုရဲ့ ပိုနက် ရှိုင်းတဲ့ အဓိပ္ပါယ်ကို ဆက်သွယ်ဖိုသာမက

but they will compose a new narrative of untold stories,

လူမသိသေးတဲ့ ဇာတ်လမ်းတွေရဲ့ ပုံပြင်သစ်တွေကို သီကုံးပါလိမ့်မယ်၊

creating a timeless window into our world.

ကျွန်တော်တို့ ကမ္ဘာအတွက် ထာဝရ ပြတင်းပေါက်တစ်ပေါက် ဖန်တီးရင်းပေါ့။
