Photography can be described as the recording of a single moment

फ़ोटोग्राफ़ी करना समय के छोटे से हिस्से

frozen within a fraction of time.

में थमे हुये एक पल को संजोने जैसा है।

Each moment or photograph represents a tangible piece

हर पल या फोटो समय के साथ गुजरती

of our memories as time passes.

यादों के एक टुकडे का प्रतीक है।

But what if you could capture more than one moment in a photograph?

पर यदि आप एक फोटो मे एक से अधिक पल संजो सकें तो!

What if a photograph could actually collapse time,

समय को लांघ कर अगर एक ही फोटोग्राफ़ दिन और रात के

compressing the best moments of the day and the night

सर्वश्रेष्ठ पलॊं को संक्षिप्त करते हुये ,

seamlessly into one single image?

एक निरंतर चित्र बन जाये तो!

I've created a concept called "Day to Night"

मैने एक संकल्पना की है जिसे "दिन और रात" कहते हैं

and I believe it's going to change

और मैं मानता हूं कि ये आपके दुनिया

the way you look at the world.

के प्रति नज़रिये को बदल देगा।

I know it has for me.

मेरा नज़रिया तो बदला है.

My process begins by photographing iconic locations,

मेरा काम ऐसी प्रख्यात जगह की फोटो लेने से शुरु होता है जो

places that are part of what I call our collective memory.

I photograph from a fixed vantage point, and I never move.

मैं एक निर्धारित स्थान से फ़ोटो लेता हूं और और खुद वहीं रहता हूं।

I capture the fleeting moments of humanity and light as time passes.

मैं समय के साथ गुज़रते हुये मानवता और प्रकाश के क्षणिक पलों को कैद करता हूं

Photographing for anywhere from 15 to 30 hours

१५ से ३० घन्टे तक फ़ोटो लेने

and shooting over 1,500 images,

I then choose the best moments of the day and night.

मैं दिन और रात के सबसे उत्तम क्षण चुनता हूं।

Using time as a guide,

I seamlessly blend those best moments into one single photograph,

visualizing our conscious journey with time.

I can take you to Paris

for a view from the Tournelle Bridge.

And I can show you the early morning rowers

और आपको सैन नदी मे सुबह सुबह

along the River Seine.

नाव खेते लोग दिखा सकता हूँ।

And simultaneously,

और साथ ही आपको रात मे चमकता हुआ

I can show you Notre Dame aglow at night.

नोतरे बांध दिखा सकता हूँ।

And in between, I can show you the romance of the City of Light.

और उसी बीच, मैं आपको इस रोशनी के शहर का अफ़सना भी दिखा सकता हूँ।

I am essentially a street photographer from 50 feet in the air,

मैं मूलत: हवा में ५० फ़ीट ऊपर बैठा एक सामान्य फोटोग्राफ़र हूँ,

and every single thing you see in this photograph

और इस फोटो मे दिखने वाली हर एक चीज

actually happened on this day.

सच में आज ही हुई है

Day to Night is a global project,

दिन और रात एक वैश्विक परियोज़ना है,

and my work has always been about history.

और मेरा काम हमेशा इतिहास के बारे मे रहा है

I'm fascinated by the concept of going to a place like Venice

मेरे लिये वेनिस जैसी जगह पर जाना और इसे किसी खास घटना के समय देखना

and actually seeing it during a specific event.

बहुत आकर्षक विचार है

And I decided I wanted to see the historical Regata,

और इसीलिये मैन्रे निर्णय लिया कि मैं ऐतिहासिक रेगाटा देखूंगा,

an event that's actually been taking place since 1498.

The boats and the costumes look exactly as they did then.

And an important element that I really want you guys to understand is:

this is not a timelapse,

this is me photographing throughout the day and the night.

I am a relentless collector of magical moments.

मैं जादुई पलों को अनवरत संग्राही हूँ।

And the thing that drives me is the fear of just missing one of them.

और ये इनमें से बस एक पल को भी खो देने का डर है जो मुझे प्रेरित करता है।

The entire concept came about in 1996.

ये पुरी संकल्पना लगभग १९९६ मे आयी।

LIFE Magazine commissioned me to create a panoramic photograph

"लाइफ़" पत्रिका ने मुझे बज़ लरमन की फ़िल्म "रोमिओ+ज्युलिअट" के अभिनेता और कर्मीदल

of the cast and crew of Baz Luhrmann's film Romeo + Juliet.

का परिचित्र लेने के लिये अधिकृत किया था।

I got to the set and realized: it's a square.

मंच पर जाकर मुझे पता चला के ये तो वर्गाकार है।

So the only way I could actually create a panoramic was to shoot a collage

तो परिचित्र बनाने का केवल एक ही तरीका था, २५० अलग अलग फोटो लेकर

of 250 single images.

उनको मिलाकर एक संग्रह चित्र बनाना!

So I had DiCaprio and Claire Danes embracing.

तो मेरे सामने डि केप्रिओ और क्लेअर डेन्स आलिंगन मुद्रा मे थे,

And as I pan my camera to the right,

और जैसे ही मैने अपना केमरा दायीं ओर घुमाया,

I noticed there was a mirror on the wall

मेरा ध्यान दीवार पे टंगे शीशे पर गया

and I saw they were actually reflecting in it.

और मैने देखा के उसमें उनका प्रतिबिम्ब था।

And for that one moment, that one image

और उस एक क्षण के लिये, उस एक फोटो में,

I asked them, "Would you guys just kiss

मैने उनसे कहा "क्या आप इस एक चित्र.."

for this one picture?"

"..के लिये चूम सकते हैं?"

And then I came back to my studio in New York,

और फ़िर मैं न्यूयोर्क में अपने स्टूडिओ मे वापस आ गया,

and I hand-glued these 250 images together

और मैने अपने हाथों से उन २५० चित्रों को एकसाथ चिपकाया

and stood back and went, "Wow, this is so cool!

और मैने उसे ढंग से देखा और कहा, "वाह, ये तो एकदम मस्त है!

I'm changing time in a photograph."

मैं फोटो मे समय को बदल रहा हूँ!"

And that concept actually stayed with me for 13 years

और ये विचार सच मे मेरे मन मे १३ साल तक रहा

until technology finally has caught up to my dreams.

जब तक कि तकनीक अन्तत: मेरे सपनों की सीमा तक पहुच पायी।

This is an image I created of the Santa Monica Pier, Day to Night.

ये मैने एक सेन्ट मोनिका पायर का चित्र बनाया है, दिन से रात तक!

And I'm going to show you a little video

और अब मैं आपको एक वीडिओ दिखाने जा रहा हूँ

that gives you an idea of what it's like being with me

when I do these pictures.

To start with, you have to understand that to get views like this,

most of my time is spent up high, and I'm usually in a cherry picker

or a crane.

So this is a typical day, 12-18 hours, non-stop

capturing the entire day unfold.

One of the things that's great is I love to people-watch.

And trust me when I tell you,

this is the greatest seat in the house to have.

But this is really how I go about creating these photographs.

लेकिन वाकई बिलकुल ऐसे ही मैं इन तस्वीरों को बनाता हूँ।

So once I decide on my view and the location,

तो एक बार अपना दृश्य और जगह निर्धारित करने के बाद, मुझे तय करना होता है कि

I have to decide where day begins and night ends.

दिन कहां शुरु होता है और रात कहां खत्म।

And that's what I call the time vector.

और इसी को मैं "टाइम व्हेक्टर" कहता हूँ।

Einstein described time as a fabric.

आइंन्स्टाइन ने बताया कि समय एक कपड़े की तरह होता है।

Think of the surface of a trampoline:

एक ट्रेम्पोलिन के कपड़े की सतह के बारे मे सोचिये जो

it warps and stretches with gravity.

गुरुत्वाकर्षण के साथ सिकुड़ता और फ़ैलता है।

I see time as a fabric as well,

मैं भी समय को कपड़े की तरह ही देखता हूँ,

except I take that fabric and flatten it, compress it into single plane.

बस मैं उस चादर को एकदम समतल करके इसे एक ही तल मे जमा देता हूँ।

One of the unique aspects of this work is also,

इस काम के विलक्षण पहलुऒं मे से एक है,

if you look at all my pictures,

यदि आप मेरे सारे चित्र देखें,

the time vector changes:

कि टाइम वेक्टर बदलता है:

sometimes I'll go left to right,

कभी मैं बायें से दायें जाता हूँ,

sometimes front to back, up or down, even diagonally.

तो कभी आगे से पीछे, ऊपर या नीचे, यहां तक कि तिरछा भी!

I am exploring the space-time continuum

मैं एक द्वि-आयामी स्थिर चित्र में, दूरी-समय सांतत्यक

within a two-dimensional still photograph.

Now when I do these pictures,

जब मैं ये चित्र बनाता हूं, तो ऐसा लगता है

it's literally like a real-time puzzle going on in my mind.

जैसे एक तत्क्षणिक पहेली मेरे दिमाग मे चल रही हो।

I build a photograph based on time,

मैं समय पर आधारित एक चित्र बनाता हूं,

and this is what I call the master plate.

और इसे मैं मास्टर प्लेट कहता हूं!

This can take us several months to complete.

इसे पूरा होने मे कई महीने लग सकते हैं।

The fun thing about this work is

इस काम की मज़ेदार बात ये है

I have absolutely zero control when I get up there

जब किसी भी दिन वहां ऊपर जाता हूं और फोटो लेता हूं तो

on any given day and capture photographs.

मेरा किसी चीज पर कोई नियंत्रण नहीं होता!

So I never know who's going to be in the picture,

इसलिये मुझे कभी नही पता होता कि फोटो मे कौन होगा,

if it's going to be a great sunrise or sunset -- no control.

ये एक शानदार सूर्योदय या सूर्यास्त होगा कि नहीं, कुछ नहीं पता!

It's at the end of the process,

ये इस प्रक्रिया के अन्त में होता है,

if I've had a really great day and everything remained the same,

वो भी जब मेरा दिन वाकई अच्छा रहा हो और सब कुछ ठीक रहा हो,

that I then decide who's in and who's out,

तब मैं तय करता हूं कि कौन रहेगा और कौन बाहर होगा, और

and it's all based on time.

I'll take those best moments that I pick over a month of editing

and they get seamlessly blended into the master plate.

और वे सब निरंतर मिलकर मास्टर प्लेट बन जाते हैं

I'm compressing the day and night

मैं दिन और रात को सिकोड़ कर

as I saw it,

जैसे कि मैं देखता हूं,

creating a unique harmony between these two very discordant worlds.

Painting has always been a really important influence in all my work

and I've always been a huge fan of Albert Bierstadt,

the great Hudson River School painter.

He inspired a recent series that I did on the National Parks.

This is Bierstadt's Yosemite Valley.

So this is the photograph I created of Yosemite.

This is actually the cover story of the 2016 January issue

ये दरअसल नेशनल जिओग्रफ़िक के जनवरी २०१६ अंक की

of National Geographic.

मुख्य कथा है।

I photographed for over 30 hours in this picture.

इस फोटो के लिये मैने ३० घन्टे से ज्यादा फोटो खींची।

I was literally on the side of a cliff,

मैं वस्तुत: एक चोटी के किनारे बैठकर,

capturing the stars and the moonlight as it transitions,

तारों को,चाँदनी के परिवर्तन को और चाँदनी से जगमगाते अल केपितान को

the moonlight lighting El Capitan.

केमरे में कैद कर रहा था।

And I also captured this transition of time throughout the landscape.

और मैंने पूरे परिदॄश्य मे समय के परिवर्तन को भी कैद किया!

The best part is obviously seeing the magical moments of humanity

जाहिर है सबसे अच्छा भाग दिन से रात मे बदलते समय के साथ

as time changed --

मानवता के जादुई पलों

from day into night.

And on a personal note,

और एक निज़ी बात,

I actually had a photocopy of Bierstadt's painting in my pocket.

मेरे पास वाकई बीअरस्टेड के चित्र की एक प्रतिलिपि मेरी जेब मे थी।

And when that sun started to rise in the valley,

और जब सूरज घाटी मे उगने लगा,

I started to literally shake with excitement

मैं वाकई जोश से काँपने लगा

because I looked at the painting and I go,

क्योंकि मैंने चित्र को देखा और कहा,

"Oh my god, I'm getting Bierstadt's exact same lighting

"हे भगवान! इसमें तो १०० साल पहले वाला एकदम बीअरस्टेड के

100 years earlier."

जैसा उजाला है।

Day to Night is about all the things,

दिन से रात हर चीज के बारे में है,

it's like a compilation of all the things I love

ये हर उस चीज के संकलन के जैसा है जो मुझे

about the medium of photography.

फोटोग्राफ़ी के माध्यम के बारे मे पसन्द है।

It's about landscape,

ये प्राकृतिक दृश्यों के बारे मे है

it's about street photography,

गली फोटोग्राफ़ी के बारे मे है,

it's about color, it's about architecture,

रंगों और वास्तुशिल्प के,

perspective, scale -- and, especially, history.

दृष्टिकोण, माप और खासकर इतिहास के बारे मे है.

This is one of the most historical moments

ये सबसे एतिहासिक क्षणों मे से है

I've been able to photograph,

जिनकी मैं फोटो ले पाया,

the 2013 Presidential Inauguration of Barack Obama.

2013 में राष्ट्रपति के रूप मे बराक ओबामा का अभिषेक

And if you look closely in this picture,

you can actually see time changing

तो आप उन बड़े टेलीविजन सेटों मे

in those large television sets.

You can see Michelle waiting with the children,

आप देख सकते हैं, बच्चों का इन्तेज़ार करतीं मिशेल,

the president now greets the crowd,

फ़िर लोगों का अभिवादन करते हुये ओबामा

he takes his oath,

फ़िर शपथ-ग्रहण,

and now he's speaking to the people.

और फ़िर वे लोगो से बात करते हुये.

There's so many challenging aspects when I create photographs like this.

जब मैं ऐसे फोटो बनाता हूं तो बहुत सारे चुनौतीपूर्ण पहलू होते हैं।

For this particular photograph,

इस विशिष्ट फ़ोटो के लिये

I was in a 50-foot scissor lift up in the air

मैं 50 फ़ुट ऊंची कैंची लिफ़्ट मे था

and it was not very stable.

और वह बहुत स्थिर नहीं थी.

So every time my assistant and I shifted our weight,

तो जब भी मेरे सहायक और मैं इधर उधर होते,

our horizon line shifted.

हमारा क्षितिज भी बदल जाता.

So for every picture you see,

तो हर उस चित्र के लिये जो आप देख रहे हैं,

and there were about 1,800 in this picture,

we both had to tape our feet into position

every time I clicked the shutter.

I've learned so many extraordinary things doing this work.

मैने इस काम को करते हुये बहुत सारी अद्भुत चीजें सीखी हैं

I think the two most important are patience

और मेरे खयाल से दो सबसे महत्त्वपूर्ण हैं धैर्य

and the power of observation.

और अवलोकन क्षमता।

When you photograph a city like New York from above,

जब आप न्यूयोर्क जैसे शहर के ऊपर से फोटो लेते है

I discovered that those people in cars

तो आप पायेंगे कि वो कारों मे घूमने वाले लोग

that I sort of live with everyday,

जिनके साथ मेरे दिन-रात गुजरते है

they don't look like people in cars anymore.

वो अब कार मे रहने वाले लोग जैसे नहीं लगते।

They feel like a giant school of fish,

बल्कि वो मछलियों के एक बड़े झुन्ड जैसे लगते हैं,

it was a form of emergent behavior.

ये एक तरह का उभरते हुए व्यवहार का रूप है।

And when people describe the energy of New York,

और जब लोग न्यू यॉर्क की ऊर्जा की बात करते हैं

I think this photograph begins to really capture that.

मेरे खयाल से यह चित्र इसे वाकई दर्शाता है।

When you look closer in my work,

जब आप मेरे काम को करीब से देखेंगे तो

you can see there's stories going on.

पायेंगे कि इसमे कहानियां चल रही हैं।

You realize that Times Square is a canyon,

आपको लगेगा कि टाइम्स स्क्वायर एक घाटी है

it's shadow and it's sunlight.

ये एक परछांई है, ये धूप है।

So I decided, in this photograph, I would checkerboard time.

तो मैने सोचा कि इस फोटो में, मैं समय को शतरंज के खानों की तरह चिन्हित करूंगा

So wherever the shadows are, it's night

तो जहां भी छाया है, वहां रात है,

and wherever the sun is, it's actually day.

और जहां धूप है वहां दिन है।

Time is this extraordinary thing

समय एक ऐसी अद्भुत चीज है जो

that we never can really wrap our heads around.

कभी हमें पूरी समझ मे नहीं आएगी।

But in a very unique and special way,

पर एक बहुत ही निराले और खास अन्दाज़ में

I believe these photographs begin to put a face on time.

ये चित्र समय को एक चेहरा देते हैं।

They embody a new metaphysical visual reality.

ये एक पारभौतिक दृश्य वास्तविकता को रूप प्रदान करते हैं

When you spend 15 hours looking at a place,

जब आप १५ घन्टे तक एक ही जगह को देखते हो

you're going to see things a little differently

तो आप चीजों को थोड़ा अलग तरीके से देखेंगे

than if you or I walked up with our camera,

took a picture, and then walked away.

This was a perfect example.

I watched over 15 hours

all these people not even look at Sacré-Coeur.

They were more interested in using it as a backdrop.

They would walk up, take a picture,

and then walk away.

And I found this to be an absolutely extraordinary example,

a powerful disconnect between what we think the human experience is

versus what the human experience is evolving into.

The act of sharing has suddenly become more important

And finally, my most recent image,

और अन्त में मेरी सबसे नयी तस्वीर, जो निजी

which has such a special meaning for me personally:

this is the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.

ये तंज़ानिया का सेरेंगती नेशनल पार्क है।

And this is photographed in the middle of the Seronera,

और ये चित्र सेरोनेरा के बीचोंबीच लिया गया है,

this is not a reserve.

यह रिजर्व नहीं है।

I went specifically during the peak migration

मैं विशेषकर पलायन के मौसम मे गया

to hopefully capture the most diverse range of animals.

ताकि मैं सर्वाधिक प्रकार के पशुओं कि फोटो ले सकूं।

Unfortunately, when we got there,

दुर्भाग्यवश जब मैं वहां पहुचा

there was a drought going on during the peak migration,

तो उस समय सूखा पड़ा हुआ था,

a five-week drought.

एक पांच हफ़्तों का सूखा।

So all the animals were drawn to the water.

तो सारे पशु पानी की ओर जा रहे थे।

I found this one watering hole,

मुझे ये एक पानी का गड्ढा मिला,

and felt if everything remained the same way it was behaving,

और मुझे लगा यदि जब कुछ जैसा चल रहा है, वैसा ही रहा तो

I had a real opportunity to capture something unique.

मेरे पास कुछ अनोखा संजोने का असली मौका है

We spent three days studying it,

and nothing could have prepared me

for what I witnessed during our shoot day.

I photographed for 26 hours

in a sealed crocodile blind, 18 feet in the air.

What I witnessed was unimaginable.

मैने जो देखा वो अकल्पनीय था।

Frankly, it was Biblical.

सच कहूं तो वो बाइबल जैसा था।

We saw, for 26 hours,

हमने देखा, २६ घंटो तक,

all these competitive species share a single resource called water.

ये सारी प्रतिस्पर्धिक प्रजातियां एक अकेला संसाधन, पानी, साझा करती हैं।

The same resource that humanity is supposed to have wars over

वही संसाधन जिसके ऊपर अगले ५० सालों मे

during the next 50 years.

मानवता में युद्ध होंगे।

The animals never even grunted at each other.

और ये जानवर एक दूसरे पर भड़के तक नहीं।

They seem to understand something that we humans don't.

वो कुछ ऐसा समझते हैं जो हम इंन्सान नहीं समझते!

That this precious resource called water

कि इस अनमोल संसाधन, जल, को हम

is something we all have to share.

सब को आपस मे बांटना ही पड़ेगा।

When I created this picture,

जब मैने ये चित्र बनाया तो मुझे

I realized that Day to Night is really a new way of seeing,

एहसास हुआ कि दिन से रात वाकई देखने का एक नया तरीका है

compressing time,

समय को संकुचित करके, स्पेस-टाइम कोन्टिनुअम

exploring the space-time continuum within a photograph.

को एक फोटो के अन्दर खोज़ें।

As technology evolves along with photography,
