I would like to talk to you about a story

من دڤییا بۆ هه‌وه‌ ده‌رباره‌ی چیروکه‌کێ باخڤم

about a small town kid.

.ده‌رباره‌ی زاروکه‌کێ بچویک یێ ده‌ڤه‌رێ

I don't know his name, but I do know his story.

.ئه‌ز ناڤێ وی نزانم، به‌لـێ ئه‌ز چیروکا وی دزانم

He lives in a small village in southern Somalia.

.ئه‌و ل گونده‌کێ بچویک دژیت ل باشورێ سومالێ

His village is near Mogadishu.

.گوندێ وی یێ نێزیکی موقه‌دیشو یه‌

Drought drives the small village into poverty

هشکاتی، گوندێ بچویک به‌ره‌ڤ هه‌ژارییێ ڤه‌ دبه‌ت

and to the brink of starvation.

.و د ئینیته‌ سه‌ر لـێڤا برسێ

With nothing left for him there,

،ئەو دەمێ چ تشت بۆ وی نەماین ل وێرێ

he leaves for the big city,

.به‌ره‌ڤ باژێرێ مه‌زن ڤه‌ دچیت

in this case, Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia.

،د ڤی حاله‌تی دا، موقه‌دیشو .پایته‌ختێ سومال

When he arrives, there are no opportunities,

،ده‌مێ ئه‌و د گه‌هیت، چ ده‌رفه‌ت نینن

no jobs, no way forward.

.چ کار، یان چ ڕێکێن پێشڤه‌ چوونێ نینن

He ends up living in a tent city

ئه‌و ل دوماهییێ دمینیت و ل باژێرێ خیڤه‌تان دژیت

on the outskirts of Mogadishu.

.ل ده‌رڤه‌ی ده‌وروبه‌رێن موقه‌دیشو

Maybe a year passes, nothing.

،دبیت ساله‌ک بوریبیت .چ تشت ڕوی نه‌دابوون

One day, he's approached by a gentleman

ڕوژه‌کێ، زه‌لامه‌کی خو نێزیکی وی کر

who offers to take him to lunch,

ئه‌وێ داخوازێ ژێ دکه‌ت ،کو وی مێهڤان ب که‌ته‌ فراڤینێ

then to dinner, to breakfast.

.پاشی بو شیڤێ، بو تێشتێ

He meets this dynamic group of people,

،ئه‌و ل هه‌ڤ ڤی گروپێ که‌سێن چالاکڤان دهێت

and they give him a break.

،و ئه‌و بێهنڤه‌دانه‌کێ دده‌نه‌ ڤی

He's given a bit of money

چه‌ند پاره‌کێن کێم هاتبوونه‌ دان بوو وی

to buy himself some new clothes,

،داکو بۆ خو هنده‌ک جلوبه‌رگێن نوی بکریت

money to send back home to his family.

.پاره‌ داکو بگەرتە ڤە مالا خو بۆ خێزانا خو

He is introduced to this young woman.

.ئه‌و پێ دهێته‌ نیاسینێ بو ڤێ ئافره‌تێ

He eventually gets married.

.ئه‌و ل دوماهییێ هه‌ڤژینییێ دگه‌ل دا پێک دئینیت

He starts this new life.

.ئه‌و ڤێ ژیانا نوی ده‌ست پێ دکه‌ت

He has a purpose in life.

.ئەوی ئارمانجەک یا هەی د ژیانێ دا

One beautiful day in Mogadishu,

،ڕوژەکا جوان ل موقەدیشو

under an azure blue sky,

،ل ژێر ئاسمانەکێ شینێ ڤەبووی

a car bomb goes off.

.پەقینا ترومبلێەکێ رووی ددەت

That small town kid with the big city dreams

ئەو زاروکێ گوندێ بچویک یێ ب خەونێن مەزن یێن باژێری

was the suicide bomber,

،خۆ کوژەکێ پەقینەر بوو

and that dynamic group of people

و ئەو گرۆپێ چالاکڤان یێ خەلکێ

were al Shabaab, a terrorist organization

ئەل شەباب" بوون، ڕێکخراوەکا تیرورستی"

linked to al Qaeda.

.یا گرێدای ب "ئەل قاعیدە" ڤە

So how does the story of a small town kid

ڤێجا چەوا چیروکا زاروکێ گوندەکێ بچویک

just trying to make it big in the city

تنێ پێکولـێ دکەت کو مەزن کاربکەت ل باژێری

end up with him blowing himself up?

ب دویماهیک هات ب پەقاندنا خۆ؟

He was waiting.

.ئەو ل هیڤییێ مابوو

He was waiting for an opportunity,

،ئەو ل هیڤییا دەرفەتەکێ مابوو

waiting to begin his future,

،ل هیڤییا دەست پێکرنا پاشەروژا خوو

waiting for a way forward,

،ل هیڤییا ڕێکەکا پێشڤەچوونێ بوو

and this was the first thing that came along.

.و ئەڤە ئێکەم تشت بوو کو هاتییە د رێکا وی دا

This was the first thing that pulled him out

ئەڤە ئێکەم تشت بوو کوو ئەو دەرئێخستی

of what we call waithood.

.ژ ئەوا ئەم دبێژنێ خو لـێ گرتن .خو لـێ گرتن: ئەو دەمەیە کو گەنجەک دمینیتە بێ کار ل مال ڤە

And his story repeats itself

و چیروکا وی هەر یا خو دوبارە دکەت

in urban centers around the world.

.ل ناڤەندێن پێشکەفتی ل جیهانێ هەمییێ

It is the story of the disenfranchised,

،ئەڤە چیروکا گەنجێ بێ بەهرکری

unemployed urban youth

بێ کار یێ ژ دەڤەرێن پێشکەفتی یە

who sparks riots in Johannesburg,

،ئەوێ فتنێ (نەخوشی-خەبسێ) ل جوهانسبێرگ دکەت

sparks riots in London,

،ل لەندەن دکەت

who reaches out for something other than waithood.

.ئەوێ خۆ دگەهینیتە تشتەکێ دی ژبلی خولـێ گرتنێ

For young people, the promise of the city,

،بو کەسێن گەنج، پەیمانا باژێری

the big city dream is that of opportunity,

،خەونا باژێرێ مەزن ئەوە ژ دەرفەتێ

of jobs, of wealth,

،ژ کاری، ژ سامانی

but young people are not sharing in the prosperity of their cities.

.بەلـێ کەسێن گەنج ژ ڤێ خوشییا د باژێرێن خودا د بێ بەهرن

Often it's youth who suffer from the highest unemployment rates.

.پترییا دەمان گەنج د نالیت ژ بلندترین رێژێن بێ کارییێ

By 2030, three out of five people living in cities

تا سالا ٢٠٣٠، سێ ژ هەر پێنج مروڤێن ل باژێران د ژین

will be under the age of 18.

.دێ د بن ژیێ ١٨'ێ بن

If we do not include young people

ئەگەر ئەم کەسێن گەنج بەشدار نەکەین

in the growth of our cities,

،د ئاڤەدانکرنا باژێرێن خودا

if we do not provide them opportunities,

،ئەگەر ئەم دەرفەتان بو وانا پەیدا نەکەین

the story of waithood,

(چیروکا خو گرتنێ (مانا ل هیڤییێ

the gateway to terrorism, to violence, to gangs,

،دەرگەهە بۆ تیرورێ، بۆ توندوتیژیێ بۆ تیپان(عەسابان)دێ بنە

will be the story of cities 2.0.

.چیروکێن باژێرێن نوکە ئەم تێدا

And in my city of birth, Mogadishu,

،و د باژێرێ ژ دایکبوونا من دا، موقەدیشو

70 percent of young people suffer from unemployment.

.٧٠ ژ سەدێ ژ گەنجان د نالن ژ بەر بێ کارییێ

70 percent don't work,

،٧٠ ژ سەدێ کار ناکەن

don't go to school.

.ناچنە قوتابخانێ

They pretty much do nothing.

.ئەو گەلەک گەلەک چ ناکەن

I went back to Mogadishu last month,

،ئەز زڤریمەڤە موقەدیشو هەیڤا بووری

and I went to visit Madina Hospital,

،و ئەز چوم داکو سەرەدانا نەخوشخانا مەدینە بکەم

the hospital I was born in.

.ئەو نەخوشخانا ئەز لـێ ژ دایک بوویم

I remember standing in front of that

یا ل بیرا من راوەستیانا من ل بەرامبەر وێ

bullet-ridden hospital thinking,

،نەخوشخانا گولـلە باران کری هزردکم

what if I had never left?

دا چ چێبیت ئەگەر ئەز چ جارا نەچوبام؟

What if I had been forced

.دا چ چێبیت ئەگەر هێز ل سەر من هاتبایە سەپاندن

into that same state of waithood?

بەرەڤ وی هەمان سەروبەرێ خو لـێ گرتنێ؟

Would I have become a terrorist?

ئەرێ ئەز دا بمە تیرورستەک؟

I'm not really sure about the answer.

.ئەز ب دروستاهی پشتراست نە بوویمە دەربارەی بەرسڤێ

My reason for being in Mogadishu that month

ئەگەرێ من کو ئەز چویمە موقەدیشو وێ هەیڤێ

was actually to host

براستی رێڤەبرن بوو

a youth leadership and entrepreneurship summit.

برێڤەبرنا سەرکردایەتییەکا گەنجان .و لوتکا برێڤەبرنا کاران

I brought together about 90 young Somali leaders.

.من نێزیکی ٩٠ سومالییێن گەنج گەهاندنە ئێک

We sat down and brainstormed on solutions

ئەم ڕوینشتنە خوار پێکڤە هزر د چارەسەرییا دا کرن

to the biggest challenges facing their city.

.بؤ مەزنترین هەڤرکی یێن توشی باژێرێ وان دبن

One of the young men in the room was Aden.

ئێک ژ زەلامێن گەنج د وێ ژورێ دا ناڤێ وی ئەدێن بوو

He went to university in Mogadishu, graduated.

.ئەو چو بۆ زانکویێ ل موقەدیشو، دەرچوو

There were no jobs, no opportunities.

.نە چ کار ھەبوون، نە چ دەرفەت

I remember him telling me,

،یا لبیرا من ئەوی دگوتە من

because he was a college graduate,

،ژبەرکو ئەو دەرچویێ کولیژەکێ بوو

unemployed, frustrated,

،نەیێ دامەزراندی، یێ بێ هیڤی بوو

that he was the perfect target for al Shabaab

کو ئەو باشترین ئارمانج بوو بو ئەل شەباب

and other terrorist organizations, to be recruited.

.و رێکخراوێن دی یێن تیرورستی، داکو بهێتە چەکدار کرن

They sought people like him out.

.ئەوانا ل ئێکە وەک وی دگەرا

But his story takes a different route.

.بەلـێ چیروکا وی رێکەکا جودا دگریت

In Mogadishu, the biggest barrier

(ل موقەدیشو، مەزنترین بەربەست (ڕێگر

to getting from point A to point B are the roads.

.داکو ژ خالا ١'ێ بگەهییە خالا ٢'ێ جادەنە

Twenty-three years of civil war

بیست و سێ سالـێن شەرێ نافخووی

have completely destroyed the road system,

،ب شێوەیەکێ تەمام سیستەمێ جادان یێ خراب کری

and a motorbike can be the easiest way

و ماتۆرسگلەک دشێت ببیتە ب سانەهیترین ڕێک

to get around.

.داکو ھاتنوچونێ ل دەوروبەران بکی

Aden saw an opportunity and seized it.

.ئەدێنی دەرفەتەک دیت و ئەو دەرفەتە گرت

He started a motorbike company.

.ئەوی ل کارگەهەکا ماتورسکلان دەست پێ کر

He began renting out motorbikes

ئەوی دەست پێکر ب کرێ گرتنا ماتۆرسگلان

to local residents who couldn't normally afford them.

بۆ دانیشتوویێن نافخویی ئەوێن .نەدشییان ب شێوەیەکێ ئاسایی بکرن

He bought 10 bikes, with the help

ئەوی ١٠ ماتور کرین، ب هاریکارییا

of family and friends,

،خێزان و هاڤالان

and his dream is to eventually expand

و خەونا وی ئەوە کو ل دوماهییێ بەرفرەهتر ببیت

to several hundred within the next three years.

.بۆ چەند سەدەکان، د سێ سالێن بهێت دا

How is this story different?

چەوا ئەڤ چیروکە یا جیاوازە؟

What makes his story different?

چ تشت چیروکا وی جیاواز لـێ دکەت؟

I believe it is his ability to identify

ئەز باوەر دکەم ئەو شیانێن وی نە کو ددەتە نیاسین

and seize a new opportunity.

.و گرتنا دەرفەتەکا نوی

It's entrepreneurship,

،ئەوژی برێڤەبرنا کاری یە

and I believe entrepreneurship can be

و ئەز باوەردکەم برێڤەبرنا کاری دشێت ببیتە

the most powerful tool against waithood.

.ب هێزترین ئامراز ل دژی خوگرتنێ (مانا ل هیبڤییێ)دا

It empowers young people

ئەو کەسێن گەنج ب هێز دئێخیت

to be the creators of the very economic opportunities

دا ببنە دروستکەرێن هەمی دەرفەتێن ئابووری

they are so desperately seeking.

.ئەو گەلەک ب هیڤی و ئومید لـێ دگەرن

And you can train young people to be entrepreneurs.

و تو دشێی کەسێن گەنج راهێنانان بکەی .داکو ببنە رێڤەبەرێن کاران

I want to talk to you about a young man

من دڤێت بو هەوە ل سەر زەلامەکێ گەنج باخڤم

who attended one of my meetings,

،ئەوێ دهاتییە کومبونێن من

Mohamed Mohamoud, a florist.

.موحەمەد مەحمود، گول فروشەک بوو

He was helping me train some of the young people

ئەوی هاریکارییا من دکر ب راهێنان دانا هندەک کەسێن گەنج

at the summit in entrepreneurship

د لوتکا برێڤەبرنا کاری دا

and how to be innovative

و دێ چەوا یێ نوی و بەرهەمەمهێنەر بی

and how to create a culture of entrepreneurship.

.و دێ چەوا کەلتورەکێ برێڤەبرنا کاران دروست کەی

He's actually the first florist Mogadishu has seen

ب راستی ئەو ئێکەم گول فروشە موقەدیشو دیتی

in over 22 years,

،د بیست سالێن بوری دا

and until recently, until Mohamed came along,

.و هەتا ڤان دوماهیکان، هەتا موحەمەد هاتی یە مەیدانێ

if you wanted flowers at your wedding,

،ئەگەر تە گول ڤیابانە ل شەهیانا خو

you used plastic bouquets

تە دەستکێن گولـێن پلاستیکی بکار دئینان

shipped from abroad.

.دکرین ژ دەرڤەی وەلاتی

If you asked someone,

،ئەگەر تە پرسیارا کەسەکی کربایە

"When was the last time you saw fresh flowers?"

"کەنگی دوماهیک جار بوو تە گولەکا نوی و پاقژ دیتی؟"

for many who grew up under civil war,

بو گەلەکان ئەوێن ،ل ژێر شەرێ نافخویی مەزن بووین

the answer would be, "Never."

".بەرسڤ دا بیتە، "چ جاران نە

So Mohamed saw an opportunity.

.ڤێجا موحەمەدی دەرفەتەک دیت

He started a landscaping and design floral company.

ئەوی دەست ب دیمەنێن سروشتی کرن .و دیزاینکرنا کومپانییەکا گولان

He created a farm right outside of Mogadishu,

،ئەوی کێلگەهەک دروست کر ژ دەرڤەی موقەدیشو

and started growing tulips and lilies,

،و دەست پێ کر ب شوین کرنا دوو جورێن گولان

which he said could survive

ئەوێن وی گوتی کو دبیت بشێن ژ

the harsh Mogadishu climate.

.زەحمەتییا کەشێ موقەدیشو خلاس ببن و شوین ببن

And he began delivering flowers to weddings,

،و ئەوی دەست پێ کر ب گەهاندنا گولان بۆ شەهیانان

creating gardens at homes

دروستکرنا باخچان ل مالان

and businesses around the city,

،و کارێ ل دەوروبەرێن باژێری

and he's now working on creating

و ئەو نوکە یێ کاردکەت ل سەر دروست کرن و بەرهەم ئینانا

Mogadishu's first public park in 22 years.

ئێکەم پارکا گشتی یا موقەدیشو .د ٢٠ سالێن بوری دا

There's no public park in Mogadishu.

.چ پارکێن گشتی نینن ل موقەدیشو

He wants to create a space where families,

،ئەوی دڤییا ڤالاهییەکێ دروست بکەت کو خێزان

young people, can come together,

،کەسێن گەنج، بشێن بگەهنە ئێک

and, as he says, smell the proverbial roses.

،و هەروەکی ئەو دبێژیت .بێهن بکنە گولـێن پێشینان

And he doesn't grow roses because

و ئەو گولان نا چینیت ژبەرکو

they use too much water, by the way.

.ئەو گەلەک ئاڤێ بکاردئینن، بوزانین

So the first step is to inspire young people,

،ڤێجا ئێکەم پێنگاڤ ئەوە کو کەسێن گەنج پالدەن

and in that room, Mohamed's presence

و دوێ ژورێ ڤە، هەبونا موحەمەدی

had a really profound impact on the youth in that room.

کارتێکرنەکا گەلەک کویر هەبو ل سەر گەنجێن د وێ ژورێ ڤە

They had never really thought about starting up a business.

ئەوانا چ جاران ب دروستاهی هزر نەکربوو دەربارەی دەست پێ کرنا کارەکی

They've thought about working for an NGO,

ئەوانا هزر کربو دەربارەی ،کارکرنێ بۆ (ن.جی.و)یەکێ

working for the government,

،کارکرن بو حکومەتێ

but his story, his innovation,

،بەلـێ پا چیروکا وی، داهێنانا وی

really had a strong impact on them.

.براستی ژی کارتێکرنەکا ب هێز هەبوو ل سەر وان

He forced them to look at their city

ئەوی هێز ل سەر وان سەپاند کو ئەو بەرێ خو بدەنە باژێرێ خو

as a place of opportunity.

.هەر وەک جهەکێ دەرفەتێ

He empowered them to believe that they could be entrepreneurs,

ئەوی ئەو ب هێز کرن داکو باوەر بکەن ،کو ئەو دشێن ببنە رێڤەبەرێن کاری

that they could be change makers.

.کو ئەو دشێن ببنە دروستکەرێن گھورینێ

By the end of the day, they were coming up

ل دوماهییا ڕوژێ، ئەو دهاتن

with innovative solutions

ب چارەسەرییێن داهێنەر

to some of the biggest challenges facing their city.

بو هندەک ژ مەزنترین .هەڤرکی یێن دهێنە بەرامبەر باژێرێ وان

They came up with entrepreneurial solutions

ئەو هاتن ب چارەسەرییێن رێکخستنا پروژان

to local problems.

.بۆ ئاریشێن نافخویی

So inspiring young people

ڤێجا هاندانا کەسێن گەنج

and creating a culture of entrepreneurship

و دروست کرنا کەلتورەکێ رێڤەبەرێن کاری

is a really great step,

،ب ڕاستی ژی پێنگاڤەکا مەزنە

but young people need capital

بەلـێ پا کەسێن گەنج پێتڤی ب پایتەختی نە

to make their ideas a reality.

.داکو هزرێن خۆ بکەنە ڕاستی

They need expertise and mentorship

ئەو پێتڤی شارەزایی و پێشرەوییێ نە

to guide them in developing and launching their businesses.

داکو وانا ئاراستە بکەت بەرەڤ پێشکەفتن .و دەست پێکرنا کارێ وان ببەت

Connect young people with the resources they need,

،کەسێن گەنج گرێدەن ب وان سەرچاوێن ئەو پێتڤی

provide them the support they need to go from ideation to creation,

بۆ وانا وێ پشتگێرییا ئەو پێتڤی پەیدا بکەن ،داکو ژ هزرکرنێ بەرەڤ بەرهەم ئینانێ ڤە بچن

and you will create catalysts for urban growth.

تو دێ پالدەرەکی دروست کەی .بۆ گەشەکرنا پێشکەفتنێ

For me, entrepreneurship is more than just

بۆ من، برێڤەبرنا کاری پترە ژ

starting up a business.

.بتنێ دەست پێ کرنا کارەکی

It's about creating a social impact.

.ئەو دەربارەی دروستکرنا کارتێکرنەکا جڤاکییە

Mohamed is not simply selling flowers.

.موحەمەد نە بتێ گولان د فروشیت

I believe he is selling hope.

.ئەز باوەردکەم ئەو یێ هیڤیێ دفروشیت

His Peace Park, and that's what he calls it,

،پارکا وی یا ئاشتی یێ ،و ئەوا ئەو ڤی ناڤی دبێژیتێ

when it's created, will actually transform

دەمێ ئەو چێدبیت، ب ڕاستی دێ

the way people see their city.

وێ رێکێ گوهوریت .ئەوا خەلک پێ بەرێ خو ددەنە باژێرێ خو

Aden hired street kids to help rent out

ئەدێن'ی زاروکێن سەر جادان ل دەف خو دانە کاری

and maintain those bikes for him.

داکو هاریکارییا وی بۆ کرێ گرتن .و پاراستنا وان پایسگلان بکت

He gave them the opportunity to escape

ئەوی دەرفەت دا وانا داکو برەڤن ژ

the paralysis of waithood.

.ئیفلیجا (شەلەلا) خو لێ گرتنێ

These young entrepreneurs are having

ڤان رێڤەبەرێن کاری

a tremendous impact in their cities.

کارتێکرنەک زێدە مەزن یێن هەین .ل سەر باژێرێن خو

So my suggestion is,

،ڤێجا پێشنیارا من ئەوە

turn youth into entrepreneurs,

،گەنجان بەکەنە رێڤەبەرێن کاران

incubate and nurture their inherent innovation,

،هەمبێز کرن و چاڤدانا داهێنانێن وان یێن خویی

and you will have more stories of flowers and Peace Parks

،دێ بنە ئەگەر کو تە پتر چیروک هەبن یێن گولان و پارکێن ئاشتیی

than of car bombs and waithood.

ژ پەقینێن ترومبێلان و خۆ لـێ گرتن .و مانا ل هیڤییێ
