I love to collect things.

من حەزم لە کۆکردنەوەی شتە.

Ever since I was a kid, I've had massive collections

لە منداڵیمەوە، شتی سەیر، و سەمەرە و نامۆم

of random stuff, everything from bizarre hot sauces

هەبوو، شتێ سەیری وەک: سۆسی گەرمی هەموو دونیا.

from all around the world to insects

بۆ ئەو مێرووانەی کە

that I've captured and put in jars.

گرتوومن و لە ناو شووشە هەڵمگرتوون.

Now, it's no secret, because I like collecting things,

ئەوە نهێنی نییە، کە حەزم بە کۆکردنەوەی شتە،

that I love the Natural History Museum

بەڵکو حەز بە مۆزەخانەی مێژووی سروشتی

and the collections of animals

و کۆکردنەوەی ئاژەڵەکان

at the Natural History Museum in dioramas.

لە ناو شووشە لە مۆزەخانە دەکەم.

These, to me, are like living sculptures, right,

بۆ من، ئەمانە وەکو پەیکەرێکی زیندوون،

that you can go and look at,

دەتوانن بچن و ببینن،

and they memorialize a specific point of time

بیڕ لە خاڵێکی دیاری کراوی یادەوەری

in this animal's life.

ژیانی ئەم ئاژەڵەکانە بکەینەوە.

So I was thinking about my own life,

بۆیە بیرم لە ژیانی خۆم کردەوە،

and how I'd like to memorialize my life, you know,

و چۆن ژیانی خۆم بکەمە یادەوەری

for the ages, and also — (Laughter) —

لە قۆناغەکانی تەمەنم (پێکەنین)

the lives of my friends, but

ژیانی هاوڕێکانم دەکەم، بەڵام،

the problem with this is that my friends aren't quite keen

کێشەی من ئەوەیە هاوڕێکانم زۆر تامەزرۆی

on the idea of me taxidermy-ing them. (Laughter)

بیرۆکەی مۆمییا کردنیان لە لایەن منەوە نییە. (پێکەنین)

So instead, I turned to video,

لە جیاتی ئەمە، پەنام بڕدە بەر ڤیدیۆ،

and video is the next best way to preserve and memorialize

بۆ پارێزگاری، یادکردنەوەی کەسێک و

someone and to capture a specific moment in time.

بۆ پاراستنی کاتێکی دیاری کراو باشترین ڕێگەیە.

So what I did was, I filmed six of my friends

پاشان ڤیدیۆی شەش لە هاوڕێکانم گرت،

and then, using video mapping and video projection,

دواتر، بەکارهێنانی ڤیدیۆی گونجاندن و پیشاندان،

I created a video sculpture, which was these six friends

ڤیدیۆیەکی پەیکەرتاشیم بۆ ئەم شەش هاوڕێیە دروست کرد

projected into jars. (Laughter)

(ناو شووشەیەکدا پێشکەش کرا. (پێکەنین.

So now I have this collection of my friends

کۆکراوەی مۆمیاکردنی هاوڕێکانم هەیە کە

I can take around with me whenever I go,

لەگەڵ خۆم بیان گەڕێنم.

and this is called Animalia Chordata,

لە پۆلینکردنی جیهانی ئاژەڵان ناوی

from the Latin nomenclature for

بڕبڕەدارەکان لە زاراوەی لاتینی بۆ

human being, classification system.

مرۆڤ بوون هەیە.

So this piece memorializes my friends in these jars,

ئەو مۆمیاکردنەی هاوڕێکانم لە ناو ئەم شوشانە،

and they actually move around. (Laughter)

لە ڕاستیدا بە دەوری خۆیان. (دەخولێنەوە. (پێکەنین

So, this is interesting to me,

ئەوەی سەرنج ڕاکێشە

but it lacked a certain human element. (Laughter)

بەڵام ئەمە هەندێ توخمی مرۆڤ بوونی کەمە. (پێکەنین)

It's a digital sculpture, so I wanted to add

ئەمە پەیکەری ژمارەییە، بۆیە دەمەوێت

an interaction system. So what I did was,

سیستەمی کارلێک کردنی بۆ زیادی بکەم.

I added a proximity sensor, so that when you get close

هەستەوەرێکم بۆ زیاد کرد، کە لە شوشەکە

to the people in jars, they react to you in different ways.

نزیک دەبیتەوە، کاردانەوەی جیاوازیان دەبێت.

You know, just like people on the street

دەزانی وەکو خەڵکێک لە سەر شەقام،

when you get too close to them.

کاتێک زۆر لێیان نزەک دەبینەوە.

Some people reacted in terror. (Laughter)

هەندێکیان بە ترسەوە وەڵام دەدەنەوە (پێکەنین).

Others reacted in asking you for help,

هەندێکیان داوای یارمەتی دەکەن،

and some people hide from you.

هەندێک خۆیان دەشارنەوە.

So this was really interesting to me, this idea of

ئەم بیرۆکەیە سەرنج ڕاکێشە

taking video off the screen and putting it in real life,

چرکاندنی ڤیدیۆ و بەخشینی ژیان پێیان،

and also adding interactivity to sculpture.

و زیادکردنی کارلێک کردن بۆ هونەری پەیکەرتاشی.

So over the next year, I documented 40 of my other friends

بۆیە ساڵیک دواتر، بەڵگەنامەیی ٤٠ لە هاوڕێکانی ترم کرد

and trapped them in jars as well

و خستمنە ناو سوراحیەیتر.

and created a piece known as Garden,

و پارچەیەکی زانراوم دروستکرد وەکو باخچە،

which is literally a garden of humanity.

بە مانای وشە باخچەی مرۆڤایەتییە.

But something about the first piece,

بەڵام شتێک دەربارەی پارچەی یەکەم،

the Animali Chordata piece, kept coming back to me,

هەمیشە خۆی دەخزاندە ناو یادەوەریم،

this idea of interaction with art,

بیرۆکەی کارلێکردن لەگەڵ هونەر،

and I really liked the idea of people being able to interact,

بیرۆکەی تێکەڵاوبوونی خەڵک سەرنجم ڕادەکێشێت

and also being challenged by interacting with art.

و بەرەنگاربوونەوە لە لایەن. کارلێککردنی هونەری

So I wanted to create a new piece that actually

بۆیە دەمویست پارچەیەکی نوێ دروست بکەم

forced people to come and interact with something,

هێزی هاتنی خەڵک و کارلێککردن لەگەڵ شتێک،

and the way I did this was actually by projecting

پرۆژەی ئەم جارەم خستنەڕووی

a 1950s housewife into a blender. (Laughter)

ژنێکی ماڵەوەی ١٩٥٠ کان لە ناو خەڵاتێک بوو. {پێکەنین}

This is a piece called Blend, and what it does is

ئەوە بەشێکە پێی دەوترێ تێکەڵاوکردن،

it actually makes you implicit in the work of art.

وات لێ دەکات لە کاری هونەری شاراوە بیت.

You may never experience the entire thing yourself.

لەوانەیە هەرگیز شارەزایی تەواوی شتەکانی خۆت نەبیت.

You can walk away, you can just watch as this character

دەتوانیت گرنگی پێ نەدەیت یان وەک ئەم کەسایەتییە

stands there in the blender and looks at you,

لە ناو خەڵاتەکە ڕاوەستاوە و سەیرت دەکات بێتە بەرچاو.

or you can actually choose to interact with it.

یان هەستی پێ بکەیت.

So if you do choose to interact with the piece,

بۆیە ئەگەر تۆ هەڵتبژارد کارلێکی لەگەڵ بکەیت،

and you press the blender button, it actually sends

و خەڵاتەکەت بە کار خست ئەو وەک،

this character into this dizzying disarray of dishevelment.

کەسایەتیەکی گێژ و. شڵەژاو یان بەگژداچوو دێتە بەر چاو.

By doing that, you are now part of my piece.

بە کردنی ئەمە، تۆ بەشێکی لە پارچەی من.

You, like the people that are trapped in my work

تۆ وەکو ئەو خەڵکەی، کە کردومنە پەیکەر لە ئیشکەمنمدا.

— (Blender noises, laughter) —

(دەنگە دەنگی تێکەڵاو، پێکەنین)

have become part of my work as well. (Laughter)

(هەروەها دەبێتە بەشێک لە کارەکەم (پێکەنین.

(Laughter)

But, but this seems a bit unfair, right?

بەڵام، بەڵام ئەمە وادەردەکەوێ کەمێک, ستەمکارانە بێت ڕاستە؟

I put my friends in jars, I put this character,

من برادەرەکانم خستە ناو شوشە ئەو کەسایەتیەم پێدان،

this sort of endangered species character in a blender.

ئەم بونەوەرانم خستۆتە ناو خەڵاتەوە.

But I'd never done anything about myself.

بەڵام هەرگیز شتێکم دەربارەی خۆم نەکرد بوو.

I'd never really memorialized myself.

هەرگیز پرۆژەم بۆ بەزیندووهێشتنەوە خۆم نەبوو.

So I decided to create a piece which is a self-portrait piece.

بڕیارمدا پارچەیەک دروست بکەم کە وێنەی خۆم بێت.

This is sort of a self-portrait taxidermy time capsule piece

ئەمە جۆرێک لە خۆ مۆمیا کردن لەناو کاپسولێک

called A Point Just Passed,

کە پێی دەگوترێت ساتێک تێپەڕی،

in which I project myself on top of a time card punch clock,

کەخۆم دەردەکەوم لەسەر کاتزمێری پێوەری کار،

and it's up to you.

و دەکەوێتەوە سەر تۆ.

If you want to choose to punch that punch card clock,

و گەر ویستت دەرخەری کات وەربگریت،

you actually age me.

ئەوا لە تەمەنی من زیاد دەکەیت.

So I start as a baby, and then if you punch the clock,

بە ساوای دەست پێدەکەم، گەر دەست بخەیتە سەر دوگمەی کات

you'll actually transform the baby into a toddler,

ساواکە دەکەیتە منداڵ،

and then from a toddler I'm transformed into a teenager.

و لە منداڵەوە بۆ هەرزەکار.

From a teenager, I'm transformed into my current self.

و لە هەرزەکارەوە، بۆ ئێستای خۆم.

From my current self, I'm turned into a middle-aged man,

و لە ئێستای خۆمەوە، بووم بە، پیاویکی تەمەن ناوەند،

and then, from there, into an elderly man.

و لەوێوە، بۆ پیاوێکی بە تەمەن.

And if you punch the punch card clock a hundred times

و گەر لە ڕۆژیکدا هەزارجاری تر کات بگریت

in one day, the piece goes black

پارچەکە ڕەش هەڵدەگەڕێت

and is not to be reset until the next day.

و نوێ نابیتەوە تا ڕۆژی دواتر.

So, in doing so, you're erasing time.

و، بەم کارەت، تۆ کات لەناو دەبەیت.

You're actually implicit in this work

و تۆ شاراوەیت لەم کارەدا و

and you're erasing my life.

و ژیانی من لەناو دەبەیت.

So I like this about interactive video sculpture,

لەم پڕۆژەی پەیکەرتاشیەم ئەم زۆر بەدڵە

that you can actually interact with it,

کە دەتوانیت لەگەڵیدا تێکەڵ بیت،

that all of you can actually touch an artwork

کە هەمووتان دەست لە هونەر بدەن

and be part of the artwork yourselves,

و ببن بە بەشیک لە هونەر،

and hopefully, one day, I'll have each and every one of you

ئومێدەوارم کە ڕۆژێک، هەر یەکێک لە ئێوە

trapped in one of my jars. (Laughter)

بکەمە ناو یەکێک لە شوشەکانمەوە. (پێکەنین)
