Many of you have been there. It's not the real China.

Dai Manju is 13 years old at the time the story starts.

She lives with her parents,

They have a hut that has no electricity,

no running water,

Dai Manju was in sixth grade when her parents said,

because the 13-dollar school fees are too much for us.

You're going to be spending the rest of your life in the rice paddies.

This is what happens to girls in remote areas.

Turns out that Dai Manju was

She still made the two-hour trek to the schoolhouse

and tried to catch every little bit of information

that seeped out of the doors.

She scouted for jobs down in Guangdong province in the south.

She found a job, she scouted for jobs

for her classmates and her friends.

She sent money back to her family.

They built a new house,

this time with running water,

What we saw was a natural experiment.

It is rare to get an exogenous investment

in girls' education.

And over the years, as we followed Dai Manju, we were able to see

that she was able to move out of a vicious cycle

and into a virtuous cycle.

She not only changed her own dynamic,

And that brings me to my first major

Okay, most of you.

Well, you know this latter group, you're wrong.

There are, true enough,

in Europe and the West,

when women and men

have equal access to food and health care,

there are more women, we live longer.

But in most of the rest of the world, that's not the case.

And, you know, it happens for several reasons.

is in a feeding center in Ethiopia.

The entire center was filled with girls like her.

What's remarkable is that her brothers, in the same family,

were totally fine.

In India, in the first year of life,

The second tenet of "Half the Sky"

one of the best ways to fight poverty and to fight terrorism

There are three reasons why this is the case.

For one, overpopulation is one of

the persistent causes of poverty.

And you know, when you educate a boy,

his family tends to have fewer kids,

When you educate a girl,

The second reason is

it has to do with spending.

It's kind of like the dirty, little secret of poverty,

not only do poor people

The last reason has to do

with women being part of the solution, not the problem.

You need to use scarce resources.

It's a waste of resources if you don't use someone like Dai Manju.

Bill Gates put it very well

He was speaking to an audience much like yourselves.

So Bill Gates, as he was staring out at the audience, he said,

there were about 80,000 slaves

transported from Africa to the New World.

Now, modern slavery:

there are about 800,000 -- 10 times the number --

that are trafficked across international borders.

The second item on the agenda

is maternal mortality.

You know, childbirth in this part of the world

In Niger, one in seven women

can expect to die during childbirth.

Around the world,

one woman dies every minute and a half from childbirth.

You know, it's not as though

we don't have the technological solution,

but these women have three strikes against them:

they are poor, they are rural

You know, for every woman who does die,

there are 20 who survive

And the most devastating injury

is obstetric fistula.

It's a tearing during obstructed labor

that leaves a woman incontinent.

Let me tell you about Mahabuba.

She lives in Ethiopia.

She was married against her will at age 13.

.بێ ویستی خۆی بە ١٣ساڵی شوی کرد، سکی هەبوو

She got pregnant, ran to the bush to have the baby,

،ڕایکرد بۆ ناو هەندێ گیا تا منداڵەکەی ببێت

but you know, her body was very immature,

،بەڵام لەبەر ئەوەی جەستەی ئامادە نەبووە

and she ended up having obstructed labor.

.لە کۆتاییدا دیواری ڕەحمی بریندار بوو

The baby died, and she ended up with a fistula.

منداڵەکەی مرد، خۆشی بۆری ڕەحمی بریندار بوو

So that meant she was incontinent;

:توانای کۆنتڕۆڵکردنی خۆی لەدەست دا

she couldn't control her wastes.

.نەیدەتوانی کۆنتڕۆلی پاشەڕۆی خۆی بکات

In a word, she stank.

.بە مانایەکی دیکە، بۆنێکی ناخۆشی لێدەهات

The villagers thought she was cursed; they didn't know what to do with her.

.خەڵکی گوندەکە وایانزانی بەنەفرەت کراوە

So finally, they put her at the edge of the village in a hut.

.بۆیە خستیانە کوخێکەوە لە کۆتایی گوندەکە

They ripped off the door

دەرگەکەیان لی داخست

so that the hyenas would get her at night.

That night, there was a stick in the hut.

She fought off the hyenas with that stick.

And the next morning,

she knew if she could get to a nearby village where there was a foreign missionary,

she would be saved.

Because she had some damage to her nerves,

she crawled all the way -- 30 miles --

to that doorstep, half dead.

The foreign missionary opened the door,

The doctors and nurses there noticed

I've talked about some of the challenges,

let me talk about some of the solutions,

and there are predictable solutions.

I've hinted at them: education

and also economic opportunity.

So of course, when you educate a girl,

Let me tell you about Saima.

.با باسی سەئیمەتان بۆ بکەم

She lives in a small village outside Lahore, Pakistan.

.لە گوندێکی بچوک دەژی لە پاکستان

.ئەوکات زۆر لە ژیان بێزار بوو

And at the time, she was miserable.

She was beaten every single day

هەموو ڕۆژێک لێیدەدرا

by her husband, who was unemployed.

.لەلایەن مێردە بێ ئیشەکەیەوە

He was kind of a gambler type -- and unemployable, therefore --

قومارچییەکی بێ ئیش بوو

and took his frustrations out on her.

.هەموو داخەکەی خۆی بەم دەڕشت

Well, when she had her second daughter,

،دواتر کاتێک دووهەم کچی بوو

her mother in-law told her son,

،خەسوی بە مێردەکەی گوت

"I think you'd better get a second wife.

باشتر وایە ژنێکی دیکە بێنیت"

Saima's not going to produce you a son."

"سەئیمە کوڕت بۆ دروست ناکات

This is when she had her second daughter.

.ئەمە دوای کچی دوهەمی بوو

At the time, there was

لەوکاتەدا

a microlending group in the village

قەرزی بچوک دەدرا لە گوندەکەی

that gave her a 65-dollar loan.

٦٥$ی بە قەرز پێ درا

Saima took that money,

سەئیمە پارەی وەرگرت و

and she started an embroidery business.

.بزنسێکی نەخشدروستکردنی دامەزراند

The merchants liked her embroidery; it sold very well,

،بازرگانەکان نەخشەکانیان پێ جوان بوو

and they kept asking for more.

.داوای زیاتریان کرد

And when she couldn't produce enough,

،کاتێک نەیتوانی نەخشی تەواو دروست بکات

she hired other women in the village.

.ژنەکانی دیکەی گوندی بە کرێ گرت

Pretty soon she had 30 women in the village

هەر زوو ٣٠ ژنی گوندەکە

working for her embroidery business.

.دەستیان کرد بە کارکردن

And then,

لەگەڵیدا

when she had to transport all of the embroidery goods

کاتێک پێویستی بە گواستنەوەی ئەو شتانە بوو

from the village to the marketplace,

،لە گوندەوە بۆ بازاڕ

she needed someone to help her do the transport,

،پێویستی بە کەسێک بوو بۆی بگوێزێتەوە

so she hired her husband.

.بۆیە مێردەکەشی بەکرێ گرت

So now they're in it together.

.ئێستا پێکەوە کار دەکەن

He does the transportation and distribution,

،مێردەکە کاری گواستنەوە دەکات

and she does the production and sourcing.

ژنەکەش کاری بەرهەمهێنان و دانینکردن

And now they have a third daughter,

ئێستاش بونەتە خاوەنی کچی سێهەمیش

and the daughters, all of them, are being tutored in education

هەموو کچەکانیشی ناردووەتە بەر خوێندن

because Saima knows what's really important.

چونکە سەئیمە دەزانێت چ شتێک زۆر گرنگە

Which brings me to the final element, which is education.

ئەمەش دەمگەیەنێتە هۆکاری سێهەم، پەروەردە

لاری سومێرس کاتێک بەرپرسی بانکی جیهانی بوو

Larry Summers, when he was chief economist at the World Bank,

once said that, "It may well be

جاریک گوتی، "باشترین

that the highest return on investment

گەڕانەوە بۆ بەرهەمهێنان

in the developing world

لە وڵاتە هەژارنشینەکاندا

is in girls' education."

"لە پەروەردەکردنی کچاندایە

Let me tell you about Beatrice Biira.

با باسی بیاترێس بیراتان بۆ بکەم

Beatrice was living in Uganda

بیاترێس لە ئۆگەندا دەژیا

near the Congo border,

نزیک سنوری کۆنگۆ

and like Dai Manju, she didn't go to school.

وەک دای مانجو نەچوو بۆ قوتابخانە

Actually, she had never been to school,

لەڕاستیدا هەرگیز نەچووە قوتابخانە

not to a lick, one day.

تەنانەت یەک ڕۆژیش

Her parents, again, said,

خێزانەکەی گوتیان

"Why should we spend the money on her?

بۆ پارەی تێدا خەرج بکەین؟"

She's going to spend most of her life lugging water back and forth."

ئەو هەموو ژیانی با ئاو هێنانەوە دەباتە سەر

Well, it just so happens, at that time,

لەو کاتەدا

there was a group in Connecticut

گروپێک هەبوو لە کۆنێتیکەت

called the Niantic Community Church Group in Connecticut.

ناوی گروپی کۆمەڵگەی نیانتیک لە کۆنێتیکەت

They made a donation to an organization

کۆمەکیان نارد بۆ ڕێکخراوێک لە

based in Arkansas

ئەرکەنساس

called Heifer International.

بە ناوی .گۆلکی نێودەولەتی

Heifer sent two goats to Africa.

.ئەم ڕێکخراوە دوو بزنیان نارد بۆ ئەفریقا

One of them ended up with Beatrice's parents,

،یەکێکیان بەر ماڵی بیاترێس کەوت

and that goat had twins.

.بزنەکە دوانەیەکی بوو

The twins started producing milk.

.دوانەکەش شیریان دروست دەکرد

They sold the milk for cash.

.شیرەکەیان دەفرۆشت

The cash started accumulating,

،پارەکان زۆرتر دەبوون

and pretty soon the parents said,

،هەر زوو خێزانەکەی گوتیان

"You know, we've got enough money. Let's send Beatrice to school."

ئێستا پارەمان هەیە، دەتوانین بنێرین بۆ

So at nine years of age,

قوتابخانە، لە نۆ ساڵیدا

Beatrice started in first grade --

بیاترێس چووە پۆلی یەک

after all, she'd never been to a lick of school --

ئەگەرچی پێشتر نەچووبووە قوتابخانە

with a six year-old.

لە شەش ساڵیدا

No matter, she was just delighted to be in school.

.گرنگ نەبوو، دڵخۆش بوو بە چوونە قوتابخانە

She rocketed to the top of her class.

.بوو بە یەکەمی پۆلەکەی

She stayed at the top of her class

لە یەکەمی پۆلەکەی مایەوە

through elementary school, middle school,

،لە سەرەتایی، ناوەندی

and then in high school,

،دواتر دواناوەندی

she scored brilliantly on the national examinations

لە تاقیکردنەوەی نیشتیمانییەکاندا سەرکەوت

so that she became the first person in her village,

،بۆیە بوو بە یەکەم کەسی گوندەکەی

ever, to come to the United States

هاتبێت بۆ ویلایەتە یەکگرتووەکان

on scholarship.

بە زەمالە.

Two years ago,

،دوو ساڵ بەر لە ئێستا

she graduated from Connecticut College.

کۆلێجی کۆنێتیکەتی تەواو کرد

On the day of her graduation,

،لە ڕۆژی تەخەروجەکەیدا

she said, "I am the luckiest girl alive

گوتی، "من بەختەوەرترین کچم

because of a goat."

"بەهۆی بزنێکەوە

(Laughter)

And that goat was $120.

ئەو بزنە نرخی١٢٠$ بوو

So you see how transformative

ئیستا دەزانن یارمەتییەکی بچوک

little bits of help can be.

But I want to give you a reality check.

Look: U.S. aid, helping people is not easy,

and there have been books that have criticized U.S. aid.

There's a book called "Dead Aid."

You know, the criticism is fair;

it isn't easy.

You know, people say how

half of all water well projects, a year later, are failed.

When I was in Zimbabwe,

we were touring a place with the village chief --

لەگەڵ بەرپرسی گوندێکدا دەگەڕاین کە

he wanted to raise money for a secondary school --

دەیویست پارە کۆبکاتەوە بۆ قوتابخانەیەک

and there was some construction a few yards away,

،لەولاوە پڕۆژەیەکم بینی

and I said, "What's that?"

وتم، ئەوە چییە؟

He sort of mumbled.

.منگە منگێکی کرد

Turns out that it's a failed irrigation project.

.دەرکەوت پڕۆژەیەکی شکستخواردوی ئاوە

A few yards away was a failed chicken coop.

لەولاتر پڕۆژەیەکی شکستواردوی دەواجینێک

One year, all the chickens died, and no one wanted to put the chickens in there.

.هەموو مریشکەکان مردن کەس مریشکی نەبرد

It's true, but we think that you don't through the baby out with the bathwater;

تۆ نابێت ئەوە بە شکستی هەموو شتەکان دانێیت

you actually improve.

.تۆ لە هەڵەکانی خۆتەوە فێر دەبیت

You learn from your mistakes, and you continuously improve.

.لە هەڵەکانتەوە فێردەبیت و گەشە دەکەیت

We also think that individuals

هەروەها پێمان وایە تاک

can make a difference, and they should,

،دەتوانێت گۆڕانکاری بکات

because individuals, together,

،چونکە تاکەکان پێکەوە

we can all help create a movement.

.دەتوانن پێکەوە جوڵانەوە دروست بکەن

And a movement of men and women

جوڵانەوەش لە ژن و پیاو

is what's needed to bring about social change,

تەنها پێویستییە بۆ گۆڕانی کۆمەڵایەتی

change that will address

گۆڕانکارییەک کە دەبێتە هۆی

this great moral challenge.

.گۆرانکاری لەم ململانییە گەورەیەدا

So then, I ask,

کەوایە با بپرسم

what's in it for you?

سودەی ئەمە بۆ ئێوە چییە؟

You're probably asking that. Why should you care?

ڕەنگە بپرسن بۆ دەبێت ئێوە گرنگی بەمە بدەن؟

I will just leave you with two things.

.تەنها لەگەڵ دوو شت جێتاندێڵم

One is that research shows

یەکەم، لێکۆڵینەوەکان دەریانخستووە

that once you have

کاتێک تۆ

all of your material needs taken care of --

هەموو هۆکارەکانی ژیانت دەبێت

which most of us, all of us, here in this room do --

وەک چۆن زۆربەمان لەم ژورەدا هەمانن

research shows that

لێکۆڵینەوەکان دەریان خستووە

there are very few things in life

چەند شتێکی کەم هەن

that can actually elevate your level of happiness.

.کە دەتوانن ڕادەی خۆشبەختیت زیاد بکەن

One of those things

یەکێک لەو شتانە بەژداریکردنتە

is contributing to a cause larger than yourself.

.لە ئەنجامدانی کارێکی لە خۆت گەورەتردا

دووهەم

And the second thing,

it's an anecdote that I'll leave you with.

چیرۆکێکە، لەگەڵ ئەم چیرۆکەدا جێتان دێڵم

And that is the story

ئەویش چیرۆکی

of an aid worker in Darfur.

.کارمەندێکی تەندروستیە لە دارفۆر

Here was a woman

ژنێک هەبوو

who had worked in Darfur,

لە دارفۆر کاری دەکرد

seeing things that no human being should see.

.شتانێکی دەبینی هیچ مرۆڤێک نابیت بیبینن

،ئەو ماوەیەی لەوێ بوو

Throughout her time there,

she was strong, she was steadfast.

.بەهێز بوو و جێگیر بوو

She never broke down.

.هەرگیز پاشگەزنەبوەوە

And then she came back to the United States

کاتێک گەڕایەوە بۆ ویلایەتە یەکگرتووەکان

and was on break, Christmas break.

.لە پشوی کریسمسدا

She was in her grandmother's backyard,

،لە حەوشەی دواوەی ماڵی نەنکی بوو

and she saw something that made her break down in tears.

شتێکی بینی کە بە کوڵ خستییە گریان

What that was

ئەوەی کە بینی

was a bird feeder.

.خواردن پێدەرێکی باڵندەکان بوو

And she realized that she had the great fortune

درکی بەوە کرد کە خاوەنی چ سامانێکی گەورەیە

to be born in a country

کە لە وڵاتێک لەدایک بوو

where we take security for granted,

کە نرخی ئارامی دەزانین

where we not only can feed, clothe

نەک دەتوانین نانبخۆین و پۆشاک بپپۆشین و

and house ourselves,

،لە خانودا بژین

but also provide for wild birds

بەڵکو چاودێری باڵندە کێوییەکانیش دەکەین

so they don't go hungry in the winter.

.تا لە زستاندا برسی نەبن

بیری لەوە کردەوە، بەو سامانە گەورەیەوە

And she realized that with that great fortune

comes great responsibility.

.بەرپرسیارێتی گەورەش دێتە سەر شانمان

And so, like her,

کەواتە، وەک ئەو

you, me,

تۆ، من

we have all won the lottery of life.

.هەموو یانسیبی ژیانمان بردووەتەوە

And so the question becomes:

:پرسیارەکە ئەوەیە

how do we discharge that responsibility?

چۆن ئەو بەرپرسیارێتییە هەڵگرین؟

So, here's the cause.

.ئەوە هۆکارەکە

Join the movement.

.بچنە ناو چالاکی و جوڵانەوەکانەوە

Feel happier and help save the world.

.هەست بە بەختەوەری بکەن و جیهان بپارێزین
