You go to the hotel and you check in. There's a Lebanese.

Yeah? And then a Swedish guy showed me my room.

بەڵێ! ئینجا کوڕێکی سویدی ژوورەکەی پێ نیشاندام.

I said, "Where are the Qataris?"

پێم وت: ئەرێ قەتەرییەکان لە کوێن؟

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

They said, "No, no, it's too hot. They come out later. They're smart."

وتیان: نا، نەخێر، ئێستا زۆر گەرمە. ئەوان لێزانن درەنگ دێنە دەرەوە.

"They know."

خۆیان دەزانن.

And of course, it's growing so fast, sometimes there's growing pains.

و بەدڵنیاییەوە، شارەکە بەخێرایی گەورە دەبێت، و هەندێک جار دەبێتە هۆی کێشە.

You know, like sometimes you run into people

بۆ نمو,نە، هەندێک جار دەچیت بەرەو هەندێک خەڵک

that you think know the city well, but they don't know it that well.

My Indian cab driver showed up at the W,

شۆفێرە هندییەکەی ئۆتۆمبێلەکە لە ئوتێلی W دەرکەوت،

and I asked him to take me to the Sheraton,

پێم وت کە بمبات بۆ ئوتێلی شیراتۆن،

and he said, "No problem, sir."

ئەویش وتی: کێشە نییە، گەورەم.

And then we sat there for two minutes.

دواتر، بۆ ماوەی ٢ خولەک وەستاین.

I said, "What's wrong?" He said, "One problem, sir."

وتم: کێشە چییە؟ وتی: یەک کێشە هەیە گەورەم.

(Laughter)

I said, "What?" He goes, "Where is it?"

وتم: چییە؟ وتی؟ شوێنەکە لە کوێیە؟

I go, "You're the driver, you should know."

منیش وتم: تۆ شۆفێریت، دەبێت تۆ بیزانیت.

He goes, "No, I just arrived, sir."

وتی: نا گەورەم، منیش ئێستا گەشتم.

I go, "You just arrived at the W?" "No, I just arrived in Doha, sir."

وتم: ئێستا گەشتیتە ئوتێلی W؟ وتی: گەورەم، ئێستا گەشتمە دەوحە.

"I was on my way home from the airport,

دەمویست لە فرۆکەخانەکەوە بڕۆمەوە ماڵەوە.

I got a job. I'm working already."

He goes, "Sir, why don't you drive?"

"I don't know where we're going."

"Neither do I. It will be an adventure, sir."

The Middle East has been an adventure the past couple of years.

رۆژهەڵاتی ناوەڕاست لەم چەند ساڵەی دواییدا هەر سەرکێشی بووە.

It is going crazy with the Arab Spring and revolution and all this.

ئەم بەهاری عەرەبی و شۆڕشانە هەمووی شێتانە بووە.

Are there any Lebanese here tonight, by applause?

ئەمشەو خەڵکی لوبنانیمان لەگەڵدایە؟ چەپڵە لێ بدەن.

Lebanese, yeah.

لوبنانییەکان، بەڵێ.

The Middle East is going crazy.

You know the Middle East is going crazy

when Lebanon is the most peaceful place in the region.

Who would have thought?

Oh my gosh.

No, there's serious issues in the region.

Some people don't want to talk about them. I'm here to talk about them tonight.

هەندێک خەڵک نایانەوێت باسیان بکەن. ئەمشەو من باسیان دەکەم.

Ladies and gentlemen of the Middle East, here's a serious issue.

خانمان و پیاوانی رۆژهەڵاتی ناوەڕاست، ئەمەش کێشەیەکی گرنگ.

When we see each other, when we say hello,

کە یەکتری دەبینین، کە سڵاو دەکەین لە یەکتر،

how many kisses are we going to do?

دەبێت چەند ماچ بکەین؟

Every country is different and it's confusing, okay?

هەر وڵاتێک جیاوازە لەوی تر و سەرت لێ دەشێوێنێت، باشە؟

In Lebanon, they do three.

لە لوبنان، سیان دەکەن.

In Egypt, they do two.

لە میسر، دووان دەکەن.

I was in Lebanon, I got used to three.

ماوەیەک لە لوبنان بووم، ئیتر بە سیان راهاتم.

I went to Egypt. I went to say hello to this one Egyptian guy,

لە میسر بووم، سڵاوم لە هاوڕێیەکی میسریم کرد،

I went, one, two. I went for three --

یەک، دوو، دەمویست سیان بکەم...

He wasn't into it.

ئەو پێی خۆش نەبوو.

(Laughter)

I told him, I said, "No, no, I was just in Lebanon."

پێم وت، نەخێر، بە هەڵە تێمەگە، لە لوبنانەوە هاتووم.

He goes, "I don't care where you were. You just stay where you are, please."

ئەویش وتی: گرنگ نییە لە کوێوە هاتووی. لە شوێنی خۆتدا بوەستە، تکایە.

I went to Saudi Arabia.

چووم بۆ سعودیەی عەرەبی.

In Saudi Arabia, they go one, two, and then they stay on the same side:

لە سعودیەی عەرەبی، یەک، دوو، ئینجا لە یەک لا دەوەستن:

three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine,

سێ، چوار، پێنج، شەش، حەوت، هەشت، نۆ،

10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 --

١٠، ١١، ١٢، ١، ١٤، ١٥، ١٦، ١٧، ١٨...

(Laughter)

جاری داهاتوو کە سعودییەک دەبینی، ورد بەرەوە لێی.

Next time you see a Saudi, look closely.

They're just a little bit tilted.

دەبینیت کەمێک لارن.

"Abdul, are you okay?"

عەبدول، تۆ باشیت؟

"I was saying hello for half an hour. I'll be all right."

نیو کاتژمێرە تەنها سڵاو دەکەم، باش دەبم.

Qataris, you guys do the nose to nose.

قەتەرییەکان، ئێوە بە لوت سڵاو دەکەن.

Why is that? Are you too tired to go all the way around?

بۆچی وا دەکەن؟ زۆر ماندوو دەبن ئەگەر ئەمدیو ئەودیو بکەن؟

(Laughter)

"Habibi, it's so hot. Just come here for a second. Say hello.

حەبیبی، زۆر گەرمە. بۆ ساتێک وەرە ئێرە. سڵاو بکە.

Hello, Habibi. Just don't move. Just stay there, please.

حەبیبی، سڵاو. هیچ مەجوڵێ. تکایە لە شوێنی خۆتدا راوەستە.

I need to rest."

پێویستم بە کەمێک پشووە.

(Laughter)

Iranians, sometimes we do two, sometimes we do three.

ئێمەی ئێرانی، هەندێک جار دوو، و هەندێک جار سێ دەکەین.

A friend of mine explained to me, before the '79 revolution, it was two.

هاوڕێیەکم بۆی روونکردمەوە، پێش شۆڕشی ٧٩ دوو ماچ بوو.

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

After the revolution, three.

دوای شۆڕشەکە، بوو بە سێ.

So with Iranians, you can tell whose side the person is on

بۆیە لەگەڵ ئێرانییەکاندا، دەتوانیت بزانیت کەسەکە سەربە چی لایەنێکە.

based on the number of kisses they give you.

بە پشتبەستن بە ژمارەی ئەو ماچانەی دەیکەن.

Yeah, if you go one, two, three -- "I can't believe you support this regime!"

بەڵی، ئەگەر یەک، دوو، سێ ماچ بکەیت... باوەڕ ناکەم تۆ پشتگیری رژێم دەکەیت!

(Laughter)

"With your three kisses."

خۆت و سێ ماچەکەت.

But no, guys, really, it is exciting to be here,

بەڵام نا، بەڕاستی سەرنجڕاکێشە بۆم کە لێرەم.

and like I said, you guys are doing a lot culturally,

هەر وەک وتم، ئێوە کاری زۆر دەکەن لە رووی کەلتورییەوە،

you know, and it's amazing,

ئەمەش کارێکی ناوازەیە.

and it helps change the image of the Middle East in the West.

ئەم کارە وێنەی رۆژهەڵاتی ناوەراست جوان دەکات لە رۆژئاوادا.

A lot of Americans don't know a lot about us, about the Middle East.

زۆرێک لە ئەمریکییەکان شتی زۆر نازانن دەربارەی ئێمە، رۆژهەڵاتی ناوەڕاست.

I'm Iranian and American. I'm there. I know, I've traveled here.

من ئێرانی و ئەمریکیم. من لەوێم. من دەزانم. سەردانی ئێرەم کردووە.

There's so much, we laugh, right?

شتی زۆرمان هەیە. پێدەکەنین. وانییە؟

People don't know we laugh.

خەڵکی نازانن کە ئێمە پێدەکەنین.

When I did the Axis of Evil comedy tour, it came out on Comedy Central,

کە گەشتی کۆمیدی Axis of Evilم کرد، لە کەناڵی Comedy Central پەخشکرا،

I went online to see what people were saying.

رۆشتمە ئینتەرنێت بۆی رای خەڵکی بزانم.

I ended up on a conservative website.

چوومە سەر ماڵپەڕێکی پارێزکار.

One guy wrote another guy. He said, "I never knew these people laughed."

گەنجێک بۆ یەکێکی تری نووسیبوو: هەرگیز نەمزانیووە ئەم خەڵکانە پێشدەکەنن.

Think about it. You never see us laughing in American film or television, right?

بیری لێبکەرەوە. ئێمە هەرگیز نەبینراوین لە فلیمێکی ئەمریکیدا پێبکەنین، وایە؟

Maybe like an evil laugh: "Wuhahaha."

مەگەر وەکو کەسێکی خراپ: وووهاهاهاها.

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

"I will kill you in the name of Allah, wuhahahahaha."

بە ناوی ئەڵڵا دەتکوژم، وووهاهاها.

(Laughter)

But never like, "Ha ha ha ha la."

بەڵام هەرگیز وەها نەبووە:ها ها ها ها.

We like to laugh. We like to celebrate life.

ئێمە حەزمان بە پێکەنینە. حەزمان بە خۆشییە لە ژیاندا.

And I wish more Americans would travel here.

و ئاواتەخوازم ئەمریکی زیاتر بێن بۆ ئێرە.

I always encourage my friends:

هەمیشە هانی هاوڕێکانم دەدەم:

گەشت بکەن، رۆژهەڵاتی ناوەڕاست ببینن،

"Travel, see the Middle East,

there's so much to see, so many good people."

شتی زۆر هەیە بۆ بینین، خەڵکەکەی زۆر باشن،

And it's vice versa, and it helps stop problems

بە پێچەوانەشەوە، دەبێتە هۆی نەهێشتنی هەندێک کێشە

of misunderstanding and stereotypes from happening.

کێشەی وەک هەڵە تێگەشتن و کڵێشە.

For example, I don't know if you heard about this,

بۆ نمونە، نازانم ئەگەر دەربارەی ئەمەتان بیستبێت،

a little while ago in the US, there was a Muslim family

ماوەیەکی کەم پێش ئێستا لە ئەمریکا، خێزانێکی موسڵمان

walking down the aisle of an airplane,

کە بە راڕەوەی فرۆکەکەدا تێدەپەڕین،

talking about the safest place to sit on the plane.

و باسیان لە دانیشتن لە پارێزراوترین شوێنی فرۆکەکە دەکرد.

Some passengers overheard them,

چەند سەرنشینێک گوێیان لێیان بووە،

somehow misconstrued that as terrorist talk,

بە هەڵە لە قسەکانیان گەشتوون و بە باسی تیرۆرستانە لە قەڵەمیان داوە،

got them kicked off the plane.

دەرەنجام لە فرۆکەکە بەدەر نران.

It was a family, a mother, father, child, talking about the seating.

تەنها خێزانێک بوون، دایک و باوک، و منداڵێک کە باسی کورسییەکانیان کردووە.

As a Middle Eastern male,

وەکو نێرێکی رۆژهەڵاتی ناوەڕاست،

I know there's certain things I'm not supposed to say

دەزانم چەند شتێک هەن کە نابێت باسیان بکەم

on an airplane in the US, right?

کاتێک لە فرۆکەدام لە ئەمریکا، وایە؟

I'm not supposed to be walking down the aisle,

نابێت بە ناو راڕەوەکەدا پیاسە بکەم،

and be like, "Hi, Jack." That's not cool.

و بڵێم: سڵاو جاک (هایجاک:فڕاندن).

(Laughter)

Even if I'm there with my friend named Jack, I say,

تەنانەت ئەگەر هاوڕێکەشم ناوی جاک بێت، دەڵێم،

"Greetings, Jack. Salutations, Jack."

سڵاوت لێبێت جاک، دروود لە تۆ جاک.

Never "Hi, Jack."

هەرگیز ناڵێم: های جاک.

But now, apparently we can't even talk

بەڵام ئێستا، ئاشکرایە تەنانەت ناتوانین

about the safest place to sit on an airplane.

باسی پارێزراوترین شوێنی دانیشتن بکەین لە ناو فرۆکەدا.

So my advice to all my Middle Eastern friends and Muslim friends

بۆیە ئامۆژگاریم بۆ هەموو دۆستە رۆژهەڵاتی و موسڵمانەکەن

and anyone who looks Middle Eastern or Muslim,

و ئەوانەشی لە رۆژهەڵاتی یان موسڵمان دەکەن،

so to, you know, Indians, and Latinos, everyone, if you're brown --

دەزانن، هندییەکان، لاتینییەکان، هەموو کەس، ئەگەر پێستت قاوەییە...

(Laughter)

Here's my advice to my brown friends.

ئەم ئامۆژگارییە بۆ هاوڕێ رەنگ قاوەییەکانمە.

The next time you're on an airplane in the US,

جاری داهاتوو کە لەناو فرۆکەیەکیت لە ئەمریکا،

just speak your mother tongue.

بە زمانی دایکت قسە بکە.

That way no one knows what you're saying. Life goes on.

بەم شێوەیە کەس نازانێت چی دەڵێیت و ژیان بەردەوام دەبێت.

Granted, some mother tongues might sound a little threatening

لەخۆیەوە، هەندێک زمان هەڕەشە ئامێز دێنە بەرگوێی

to the average American.

هاوڵاتی ئەمریکی ئاسایی.

If you're walking down the aisle speaking Arabic,

ئەگەر تۆ بە راڕەوەکەدا تێپەڕیت و بە عەرەبی بدوێیت،

you might freak them out --

لەوانەیە بیان ترسێنیت.

(Imitating Arabic)

(لاسایی کردنەوەی عەرەبی)

They might say, "What's he talking about?"

لەوانەیە بڵێن: ئەوە باسی چی دەکات؟

The key, to my Arab brothers and sisters,

بۆیە چارەسەر، بۆ خوشک و برا عەرەبەکانم

is to throw in random good words to put people at ease

جارجارە وشەیەکی هەرەمەکی جوان تێکەڵ قسەکانیان بکەن

as you're walking down the aisle.

ئەو کاتەی بە راڕەوەکەدا تێدەپەڕن.

Just as you're walking down --

بۆ نمونە ئاوا تێدەپەڕیت...
