2006 was a great year.

Under clear blue skies in July in the wine region of Ontario,

2008 and 2009 were a little tougher.

I know that they were tougher for a lot of people,

2008, 2009 were heavy years for me for another reason, too.

I was going through a lot of personal problems at the time.

I started putting myself in a better mood.

Over the last few years,

Having a sense of awareness

Let's go all the way back to 1932

I'd like to pause my TEDTalk

for about 10 seconds right now,

because you don't get many opportunities in life to do something like this,

왜냐하면 여러분이 삶에서 이렇게 해볼 기회가 많지 않고,

and my parents are sitting in the front row.

제 부모님이 맨 앞줄에 앉아 계시기 때문입니다.

So I wanted to ask them to, if they don't mind, stand up.

자, 괜찮으시다면 일어나 주시겠어요?

And I just wanted to say thank you to you guys.

When I was growing up, my dad used to love telling the story

제가 성장할 때, 아버지께서는 캐나다에서의

of his first day in Canada.

첫 날에 대해서 말씀하시는 것을 좋아하셨습니다.

And it's a great story, because what happened was

그리고 그것은 대단한 이야기입니다. 아버지가

he got off the plane at the Toronto airport,

토론토 공항 비행기에서 내렸을 때,

and he was welcomed by a non-profit group,

제가 확신하기로는 이 방에 있는 누군가가

which I'm sure someone in this room runs.

And this non-profit group had a big welcoming lunch

for all the new immigrants to Canada.

And my dad says he got off the plane and he went to this lunch

and there was this huge spread.

There was bread, there was those little, mini dill pickles,

빵이 있었고, 작은 딜 피클이 있었습니다.

there was olives, those little white onions.

There was rolled up turkey cold cuts,

말아놓은 칠면조 편육과

rolled up ham cold cuts, rolled up roast beef cold cuts

말아놓은 햄 편육, 말아놓은 구운 쇠고기 편육이 있었습니다.

and little cubes of cheese.

그리고 작은 사각 치즈가 있었죠.

There was tuna salad sandwiches and egg salad sandwiches

참치 샐러드 샌드위치와 달걀 샐러드 샌드위치,

and salmon salad sandwiches.

연어 샐러드 샌드위치가 있었습니다.

There was lasagna, there was casseroles,

라자냐가 있었고, 캐서롤이 있었습니다.

there was brownies, there was butter tarts,

초콜릿 케이크와 버터 타트가 있었고,

and there was pies, lots and lots of pies.

아주 많은 파이가 있었습니다.

And when my dad tells the story, he says,

그리고 아버지가 그 이야기를 말하기를,

"The craziest thing was, I'd never seen any of that before, except bread.

"엄청났단다. 빵 말고는 그런 것들을 본 적이 없었지."라고 말했습니다.

I didn't know what was meat, what was vegetarian.

"나는 고기가 무엇인지, 채식주의자가 무엇인지 알지 못했단다.

I was eating olives with pie.

나는 파이와 함께 올리브를 먹었지."

I just couldn't believe how many things you can get here."

"여기서 얼마나 많은 것들을 얻을 수 있는지 나는 믿지 못했지."

When I was five years old,

제가 다섯살 때,

my dad used to take me grocery shopping,

아버지는 저를 식료품점에 데려가고는 하셨습니다.

and he would stare in wonder

그리고 아버지는 과일이나 채소에 붙어있는

at the little stickers that are on the fruits and vegetables.

작은 스티커를 놀라서 응시하셨죠.

He would say, "Look, can you believe they have a mango here from Mexico?

"보렴, 멕시코산 망고가 여기 있다는게 믿겨지니?"라고 말하셨죠.

They've got an apple here from South Africa.

"여기 남아프리카산 사과도 있구나.

Can you believe they've got a date from Morocco?"

모로코산 대추야자 열매가 있다는게 믿겨지니?"

He's like, "Do you know where Morocco even is?"

"모로코가 어디 있는지 알고는 있니?"

And I'd say, "I'm five. I don't even know where I am.

저는 이렇게 답했죠. "저는 다섯살이예요, 제가 지금 어디 있는지도 모르는걸요.

Is this A&P?"

이건 A&P인가요?" (주 : A&P - Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, 미국의 슈퍼마켓 회사)

And he'd say, "I don't know where Morocco is either, but let's find out."

그리고 아버지가 말했습니다. "나도 모로코가 어디 있는지 모른단다. 하지만 한 번 찾아보자꾸나."

And so we'd buy the date, and we'd go home.

그리고 우리는 그 대추야자 열매를 사서 집으로 돌아왔습니다.

And we'd actually take an atlas off the shelf,

그리고 실제로 지도책을 펼쳐봤죠.

and we'd flip through until we found this mysterious country.

그리고 이 미지의 나라를 찾을 때까지 넘겨봤습니다.

And when we did, my dad would say,

책을 다 보고 나서는 아버지가 말씀하셨습니다.

"Can you believe someone climbed a tree over there,

picked this thing off it, put it in a truck,

트럭에 싣고난 다음에

drove it all the way to the docks

and then sailed it all the way

대서양을 건너

across the Atlantic Ocean

and then put it in another truck

다른 트럭에 옮겨 싣고

and drove that all the way to a tiny grocery store just outside our house,

우리 집 밖에 있는 작은 식료품점으로 가져와서 25센트에 우리에게

so they could sell it to us for 25 cents?"

판다는 것을 믿을 수 있니?"

And I'd say, "I don't believe that."

제가 답했죠. "믿을 수 없네요."

And he's like, "I don't believe it either.

그리고 아버지도 말했죠. "나도 믿을 수 없구나.

Things are amazing. There's just so many things to be happy about."

모든게 대단하다. 행복한 수 많은 것들이 존재하는구나."

When I stop to think about it, he's absolutely right.

곰곰히 생각해보니 아버지가 전적으로 옳았습니다.

There are so many things to be happy about.

행복해 할 수 있는 수 많은 것들이 존재하고 있었습니다.

We are the only species

우리는 전 우주를 통틀어

on the only life-giving rock

우리가 보아온, 수많은 것들을

in the entire universe that we've ever seen,

경험할 수 있는

capable of experiencing

오로지 생명이 주어진

so many of these things.

땅 위에 존재하는 유일한 종입니다.

I mean, we're the only ones with architecture and agriculture.

제 말은, 건축과 농업을 할 수 있는 유일한 존재라는 것입니다.

We're the only ones with jewelry and democracy.

우리는 보석과 민주주의를 가진 유일 종이지요.

We've got airplanes, highway lanes,

우리는 비행기와 고속도로,

interior design and horoscope signs.

인테리어 디자인과 별자리를 가졌습니다.

We've got fashion magazines, house party scenes.

우리는 패션 잡지와 하우스 파티를 가지고 있죠.

You can watch a horror movie with monsters.

여러분은 괴물이 나오는 호러 무비를 볼 수 있습니다.

You can go to a concert and hear guitars jamming.

여러분은 콘서트에 가서 기타 즉흥연주를 들을 수 있습니다.

We've got books, buffets and radio waves,

우리는 책, 뷔페, 라디오 전파,

wedding brides and rollercoaster rides.

결혼하는 신부들과 롤러코스터를 가지고 있습니다.

You can sleep in clean sheets.

여러분은 깨끗한 담요에서 잘 수 있습니다.

You can go to the movies and get good seats.

여러분은 영화를 보러가서 좋은 자리에 앉을 수 있습니다.

You can smell bakery air, walk around with rain hair,

여러분은 제과점의 내음을 맡고. 비 맞은 머리로

pop bubble wrap or take an illegal nap.

뽁뽁이 포장재를 가지고 다니거나 불법적인 낮잠을 잘 수 있습니다.

We've got all that,

우리는 그 모든 것을 가지고 있지만,

but we've only got 100 years to enjoy it.

겨우 100년만 그것을 누릴 수 있습니다.

And that's the sad part.

그리고 그것이 슬픈 대목이죠.

The cashiers at your grocery store,

여러분의 식료품점에 있는 계산원,

the foreman at your plant,

여러분 공장의 감독관,

the guy tailgating you home on the highway,

고속도로에서 여러분 뒤를 집까지 바짝 따르는 사람,

the telemarketer calling you during dinner,

저녁식사 시간에 전화하는 텔레마케터,

every teacher you've ever had,

이제까지 여러분이 거쳤던 선생님들,

everyone that's ever woken up beside you,

여러분 옆에서 잠을 깨는 사람들,

every politician in every country,

모든 나라의 모든 정치인들,

every actor in every movie,

모든 영화의 모든 배우들,

every single person in your family, everyone you love,

여러분 가족의 모든 미혼자들, 여러분이 사랑하는 모든 사람들,

everyone in this room and you

이 방 안에 있는 모든 분들과 여러분은

will be dead in a hundred years.

100년 내로 세상을 떠날 것입니다.

Life is so great that we only get such a short time

인생은 아주 멋져서 아주 달콤한 그 모든

to experience and enjoy

짧은 순간들을 경험하고

all those tiny little moments that make it so sweet.

즐기기에는 너무나도 시간이 짧습니다.

And that moment is right now,

그리고 그 순간들은 바로 지금이며,

and those moments are counting down,

그 순간들은 줄어들어가고만 있고,

and those moments are always, always, always fleeting.

그 순간들은 언제나 나는 듯 지나가고 있습니다.

You will never be as young as you are right now.

여러분이 결코 지금처럼 젊을 수 없습니다.

And that's why I believe that if you live your life

그것이 삶이 여러분에게 타격을 입혀도

with a great attitude,

앞으로 나아가는,

choosing to move forward and move on

여러분 주변의 세상을 지각하며 살아가는,

whenever life deals you a blow,

여러분 안에 있는 세살배기를

living with a sense of awareness of the world around you,

포용하는 그리고 삶을 즐겁게 만드는 작은 기쁨들을

embracing your inner three year-old

보고 스스로에게 진정성을 가지는,

and seeing the tiny joys that make life so sweet

자신 스스로가 되고 그것으로 멋져지는,

and being authentic to yourself,

여러분의 가슴이 여러분을 인도하고

being you and being cool with that,

스스로를 만족시키는 경험으로

letting your heart lead you and putting yourself in experiences that satisfy you,

이끄는 훌륭한 태도로 여러분의 삶을 살거라고 믿는 이유입니다.

then I think you'll live a life

그러고 나서 여러분은

that is rich and is satisfying,

풍요롭고 만족스러운 삶을 살거라고 생각합니다.

and I think you'll live a life that is truly awesome.

그리고 여러분은 정말 대단한 삶을 살게 될 것입니다.
