Boyd Varty: What I learned from Nelson Mandela

And so this talk is going to be for him.

I grew up in wonder.

I grew up amongst those animals.

I grew up in the wild eastern part of South Africa

at a place called Londolozi Game Reserve.

It's a place where my family has been

in the safari business for four generations.

Now for as long as I can remember,

Africa is a place

where people still sit under starlit skies

and around campfires and tell stories,

and so what I have to share with you today

그래서 오늘 제가 여러분과 함께 나누고자 하는 것은

is the simple medicine of a few campfire stories,

모닥불 주변에서 흔히 오가는 간단한 이야기 같은 것들 입니다.

stories about heroes of heart.

마음 속 영웅에 대한 이야기 같은 것이죠.

Now my stories are not the stories

제가 말씀드리는 이야기는

that you'll hear on the news,

뉴스에 나올 법한 그런 이야기가 아닙니다.

and while it's true that Africa is a harsh place,

아프리카가 살기 힘든 곳이긴 하지만

I also know it to be a place

그곳은 사람들과 동물들, 그리고

where people, animals and ecosystems

생태계가 더욱 밀접한 관계를

teach us about a more interconnected world.

갖고 있다는 점을 가르쳐 주는 곳이라고 생각합니다.

When I was nine years old,

제가 아홉살 때,

President Mandela came to stay with my family.

만델라 대통령이 제 가족과 함께 시간을 보내러 오셨습니다.

He had just been released from his 27 years of incarceration,

그 때 그 분은 27년간의 투옥을 마치고 석방되신 직후였고

and was in a period of readjustment

급작스레 전세계적인 우상이 되버린 자신에

to his sudden global icon status.

적응하는 시기였지요.

Members of the African National Congress

아프리카 민족 회의의 회원들은

thought that in the bush

그 분이 숲 속에서

he would have time to rest and recuperate

시간을 보내며 대중의 시선에서 벗어나

away from the public eye,

적응 기간을 거칠 것으로 생각했습니다.

and it's true that lions tend to be

a very good deterrent to press and paparazzi.

But it was a defining time for me as a young boy.

I would take him breakfast in bed,

and then, in an old track suit and slippers,

At night, I would sit with my family

surrounded by hundreds and thousands of people

as scenes from his release were broadcast nightly.

He was bringing peace

그 분은 분단되고 폭력적인 남아프리카에

to a divided and violent South Africa,

평화를 가져왔습니다.

one man with an unbelievable sense of his humanity.

믿을 수 없는 인간성을 가진 인물이었어요.

Mandela said often that the gift of prison

만델라는 종종 투옥으로부터 얻은 선물은

was the ability to go within and to think,

to create in himself

the things he most wanted for South Africa:

Through this act of immense open-heartedness,

of what in South Africa we call "ubuntu."

Ubuntu: I am because of you.

Or, people are not people

혹은, 다른 사람이 없이는

without other people.

사람은 사람이 될 수 없습니다.

It's not a new idea or value

but it's one that I certainly think at these times

is worth building on.

In fact, it is said that in the collective consciousness of Africa,

we get to experience the deepest parts

of our own humanity

through our interactions with others.

Ubuntu is at play right now.

You are holding a space for me

to express the deepest truth of who I am.

Without you, I'm just a guy talking to an empty room,

and I spent a lot of time last week doing that,

and it's not the same as this.

If Mandela was the national and international embodiment,

then the man who taught me the most

about this value personally was this man,

Solly Mhlongo.

솔리 음롱고라는 분입니다.

Solly was born under a tree

솔리는 제가 모잠비크에서 자랐던 곳에서

60 kilometers from where I grew up in Mozambique.

60킬로미터 떨어진 곳의 어느 나무 아래에서 태어났습니다.

He would never have a lot of money,

그 분은 많은 돈을 가져 본 적이 없었지만

but he was to be

one of the richest men I would ever meet.

Solly grew up tending to his father's cattle.

Now, I can tell you, I don't know what it is about people who grow up looking after cattle,

but it makes for über-resourcefulness.

The first job that he ever got in the safari business

was fixing the safari trucks.

Where he had learned to do that out in the bush

I have no idea, but he could do it.

He then moved across into what we called

the habitat team.

These were the people on the reserve

he did some anti-poaching.

And then one day we were out together,

and he came across the tracks of where a female leopard had walked.

And it was an old track,

but for fun he turned and he began to follow it,

재미삼아 길을 바꿔 표범을 따라갔습니다.

and I tell you, I could tell by the speed

at which he moved on those pad marks

that this man was a Ph.D.-level tracker.

If you drove past Solly

somewhere out on the reserve,

you look up in your rearview mirror,

you'd see he'd stopped the car

just in case you need help with something.

The only accusation I ever heard leveled at him

was when one of our clients said,

"Solly, you are pathologically helpful."

When I started professionally guiding people

제가 직업적으로 사람들을 이런 환경으로

out into this environment,

안내하기 시작했을 때,

Solly was my tracker.

솔리는 제 팀의 일원이었습니다.

We worked together as a team.

우리는 함께 팀으로 일했어요.

And the first guests we ever got

우리가 함께 맞은 첫 고객은

were a philanthropy group from your East Coast,

미국 동부 해안의 자선 활동가 단체였는데

and they said to Solly, on the side, they said,

"Before we even go out to see lions and leopards,

we want to see where you live."

So we took them up to his house,

and this visit of the philanthropist to his house

coincided with a time when Solly's wife,

우연히도 영어를 배우고 있던

who was learning English,

was going through a phase where she would open the door

by saying, "Hello, I love you.

Welcome, I love you." (Laughter)

And there was something so beautifully African

about it to me, this small house

무엇인가가 있습니다. 이 작은 집에는

with a huge heart in it.

엄청나게 따듯한 마음이 있습니다.

Now on the day that Solly saved my life,

솔리가 제 목숨을 건졌던 날

he was already my hero.

그는 이미 저의 영웅이었어요.

It was a hot day,

아주 더운 날이었는데

and we found ourselves down by the river.

우리는 강가에 있었지요.

Because of the heat, I took my shoes off,

너무 더워서 저는 신발을 벗고

and I rolled up my pants,

바지를 걷어 올린 채

and I walked into the water.

물에 걸어들어 갔습니다.

Solly remained on the bank.

솔리는 강둑에 남아있었지요.

The water was clear running over sand,

강물은 모래위로 투명하게 흐르고 있었고

and we turned and we began to make our way upstream.

우리는 방향을 바꿔 상류 쪽으로 거슬러 오르기 시작했죠.

And a few meters ahead of us,

그런데 몇 미터 앞에

there was a place where a tree had fallen out of the bank,

강가에서 쓰러진 나무가 있는 곳이 있었습니다.

and its branches were touching the water,

나뭇가지가 물에 닿아 있었는데

and it was shadowy.

그늘을 드리우고 있었습니다.

And if had been a horror movie,

공포 영화였다면

people in the audience would have started saying,

관객들이 이렇게 말했을 겁니다.

"Don't go in there. Don't go in there." (Laughter)

"거기 가지마. 그리 들어가면 안돼." (웃음)

And of course, the crocodile was in the shadows.

당연히 악어가 그 그림자 뒤에 있었습니다.

Now the first thing that you notice when a crocodile hits you

악어가 사람을 공격할 때, 처음 겁에 질리게 하는 것은 바로

is the ferocity of the bite.

악어가 격렬하게 무는 것이죠.

Wham! It hits me by my right leg.

쿵! 악어가 제 오른쪽 다리를 물었어요.

It pulls me. It turns. I throw my hand up. I'm able to grab a branch.

저를 끌어당기며 돕니다. 저는 손을 올려 가지를 잡을 수 있었죠.

It's shaking me violently.

그 놈은 저를 격렬하게 흔들었습니다.

It's a very strange sensation

다른 생명체가 나를 잡아먹으려 한다는 것은

having another creature try and eat you,

아주 이상한 느낌입니다.

and there are few things that promote vegetarianism like that.

채식주의를 광고하는데 그보다 저 좋은 일은 없을거에요.

(Laughter)

Solly on the bank sees that I'm in trouble.

강둑에 있던 솔리가 위험에 처한 저를 봤습니다.

He turns. He begins to make his way to me.

그가 방향을 바꿔 저에게 다가오기 시작했죠.

The croc again continues to shake me.

악어는 다시 저를 뒤흔들기 시작했어요.

It goes to bite me a second time.

그 놈이 저를 또다시 물었습니다.

I notice a slick of blood in the water around me

저는 제 주변이 피로 물들여진 것을 보았고

that gets washed downstream.

피는 물에 휩쓸려 내려갔어요.

As it bites the second time, I kick.

그 놈이 두 번째로 저를 물었을 때, 저는 발길질을 했습니다.

My foot goes down its throat. It spits me out.

I pull myself up into the branches,

and as I come out of the water, I look over my shoulder.

My leg from the knee down

무릎 아래로 제 다리는

is mangled beyond description.

표현할 수 없을 만큼 엉망이었죠.

The bone is cracked.

뼈는 부서지고

The meat is torn up.

살점이 떨어져 나갔습니다.

I make an instant decision that I'll never look at that again.

저는 순간적으로 다시는 그걸 보지 않기로 했어요.

As I come out of the water,

제가 물에서 빠져나올 때 쯤,

Solly arrives at a deep section,

솔리가 우리 사이로

a channel between us.

물이 깊어지는 곳에 당도했습니다.

He knows, he sees the state of my leg,

그는 이미 알고 있었죠. 제 다리 상태를 보았고

he knows that between him and I

그와 저 사이에는

there is a crocodile,

악어가 잇었습니다.

and I can tell you this man doesn't slow down for one second.

솔리는 단 1초도 머뭇거리지 않고

He comes straight into the channel.

He wades in to above his waist.

그는 가슴까지 물에 찬 채로 다가와서

He gets to me. He grabs me.

저를 붙잡았습니다.

I'm still in a vulnerable position.

저는 여전히 위험한 상황에 있었구요.

He picks me and puts me on his shoulder.

This is the other thing about Solly, he's freakishly strong.

He turns. He walks me up the bank.

He lays me down. He pulls his shirt off.

and he's able to get me to medical attention.

And I survive.

Now — (Applause)

Now I don't know how many people you know

that go into a deep channel of water

깊은 물에 들어가

that they know has a crocodile in it

to come and help you,

but for Solly, it was as natural as breathing.

솔리에게 그것은 숨쉬는 것처럼 당연한 일이었죠.

And he is one amazing example

그는 제가 아프리카 전체에서 경험했던

of what I have experienced all over Africa.

놀라운 예 가운데 하나에요.

In a more collective society,

집단적 경향의 사회일수록

we realize from the inside

우리는 우리 자신의 행복이

that our own well-being is deeply tied

다른 이들의 행복과 깊은 연관이 있다는 사실을

to the well-being of others.

내부로부터 알게 됩니다.

Danger is shared. Pain is shared.

위험도 고통도 공유합니다.

Joy is shared. Achievement is shared.

기쁨도 성공도 공유하지요.

Houses are shared. Food is shared.

집이나 음식도 공유합니다.

Ubuntu asks us to open our hearts

우분투는 우리에게 마음을 열고

and to share,

공유하라고 가르칩니다.

and what Solly taught me that day

그날 솔리가 제게 가르쳐 준 것은

is the essence of this value,

이러한 가치의 정수였어요.

his animated, empathetic action

매 순간 활기차고 이해심 깊은

in every moment.

그의 행동도 포함해서 말이죠.

Now although the root word is about people,

이제 근본이 되는 단어는 사람에 관한 것이지만

I thought that maybe ubuntu was only about people.

어쩌면 우분투는 단지 사람에 관한 것이라고 생각합니다.

And then I met this young lady.

그리고는 저는 이 어린 아가씨를 만났습니다.

Her name was Elvis.

그 녀석의 이름은 엘비스에요.

In fact, Solly gave her the name Elvis

사실 솔리가 지어준 이름인데요.

because he said she walked like she was doing

솔리는 그 녀석이 엘비스 프레슬리가

the Elvis the pelvis dance.

춤추는 것처럼 걷는다고 그렇게 지어준 겁니다.

She was born with very badly deformed back legs and pelvis.

그 녀석은 골반과 뒷다리가 심하게 휜 상태로 태어났습니다.

She arrived at our reserve from a reserve

그 녀석은 이동 중에, 우리가 있던 보호 구역의

east of us on her migratory route.

동쪽에 있는 보호 구역에서 왔습니다.

When I first saw her,

제가 그 녀석을 처음으로 봤을 때

I thought she would be dead in a matter of days.

며칠 내로 죽을거라고 생각했어요.

And yet, for the next five years

하지만 그로부터 5년 동안

she returned in the winter months.

그 녀석은 겨울마다 되돌아 왔어요.

And we would be so excited to be out in the bush

우리는 숲으로 나가

and to come across this unusual track.

It looked like an inverted bracket,

and we would drop whatever we were doing and we would follow,

and then we would come around the corner,

and there she would be with her herd.

그 녀석은 같은 무리와 함께 있곤 했어요.

And that outpouring of emotion

우리가 탄 사파리 트럭 사람들이

from people on our safari trucks

그녀석을 보면 애잔한 마음을 쏟아내곤 했는데

as they saw her, it was this sense of kinship.

그건 이런 연대감 같은 것이었어요.

And it reminded me

그건 제게

that even people who grow up in cities

심지어 도시에서 자란 사람들도

feel a natural connection

자연 세계나 동물과 자연스런 연대감을 느낀다는 사실을

with the natural world and with animals.

제게 일깨워 주었습니다.

And yet still I remained amazed that she was surviving.

어쨌든 저는 그 녀석이 아직 살아있다는 것에 놀라움을 갖고 있어요.

And then one day we came across them at this small water hole.

그러다 어느 날, 우리는 그 무리와 이 작은 샘에서 만나게 되었는데

It was sort of a hollow in the ground.

지면에 있는 웅덩이 같은 것이었어요.

And I watched as the matriarch drank,

저는 무리의 우두머리가 물 마시는 것을 봤는데

and then she turned in that beautiful slow motion of elephants,

그 녀석이 이렇게 아름다운 코끼리의 느린 움직임을 보여주었어요.

looks like the arm in motion,

마치 팔이 움직이는 것 같았죠.

and she began to make her way up the steep bank.

그 녀석은 가파른 비탈을 올라가기 시작했고

The rest of the herd turned and began to follow.

And I watched young Elvis

저는 어린 엘비스가

begin to psych herself up for the hill.

She got visibly -- ears came forward,

she had a full go of it and halfway up,

her legs gave way, and she fell backwards.

She attempted it a second time,

and again, halfway up, she fell backwards.

And on the third attempt,

an amazing thing happened.

놀라운 일이 일어났죠.

Halfway up the bank,

비탈을 반쯤 올랐을 때,

a young teenage elephant came in behind her,

젊은 코끼리가 그 녀석의 뒤로 가서

and he propped his trunk underneath her,

그 녀석의 아래쪽으로 코를 밀어넣더니

and he began to shovel her up the bank.

비탈 위쪽으로 밀어 올리는 것이었어요.

And it occurred to me

제게 든 생각은

that the rest of the herd

무리의 다른 코끼리들이

was in fact looking after this young elephant.

이 어린 꼬끼리를 사실상 돌보고 있다는 것이었습니다.

The next day I watched again

다음 날 저는 다시

as the matriarch broke a branch

무리의 우두머리가 나뭇가지를 꺽어

and she would put it in her mouth,

and then she would break a second one

and drop it on the ground.

And a consensus developed between all of us

who were guiding people in that area

that that herd was in fact moving slower

to accommodate that elephant.

What Elvis and the herd taught me

엘비스와 그 무리가 제게 가르쳐 준 것은

caused me to expand my definition of ubuntu,

우분투에 대한 제 정의를 넓혀주었습니다.

and I believe that in the cathedral of the wild,

저는 야생의 왕국에서

we get to see the most beautiful parts of ourselves

우리 자신의 모습이 투영된 가장 아름다운 장면을 본 것이라고

reflected back at us.

믿습니다.

And it is not only through other people

우리가 인간성을 느끼게 되는 것은

that we get to experience our humanity

다른 이들을 통해서 뿐만 아니라

but through all the creatures that live on this planet.

이 지구상에 살고 있는 모든 생명체를 통해서 입니다.

If Africa has a gift to share,

아프리카에 공유할 수 있는 선물이 있다면

it's a gift of a more collective society.

그것은 보다 집단적인 사회라는 점이에요.

And while it's true that ubuntu is an African idea,

우분투라는 것이 아프리카의 정신이기는 하지만

what I see is the essence of that value

제가 본 것은 여기서 만들어지는

being invented here.

그런 가치의 정수입니다.

from early childhood

아릴 때부터 아는 사이라는 것은 알겠는데

and that you heard the news as we all did today,

오늘 그 뉴스도 들으셨겠죠.

and deeply distraught

그건 정말 심란하고

and know the tragic loss that it is to the world.

세상에는 비극적인 손실입니다.

But I just wondered if you wanted

하지만 제가 궁금한 것은

to share any additional thoughts,

공유하고 싶으신 다른 생각이 있는지 궁금합니다.

because we know that you heard that news

당신도 이 강연에 오기 직전에

just before coming in to do this session.

그 뉴스를 들으셨다는 걸 알거든요.

Boyd Varty: Well thanks, Pat.

보이드 바르티: 감사합니다, 팻.

I'm so happy because it was time for him to pass on.

그 분이 짐을 넘겨줄 시간이 되어서 마음이 놓입니다.

He was suffering.

그 분은 고통받고 있으셨거든요.

And so of course there's the mixed emotions.

물론 감정이 교차하는 느낌이에요.

But I just think of so many occurrences

제가 생각하는 것은

like the time he went on the Oprah show

그 분이 오프라 쇼에 나가셔서

and asked her what the show would be about.

그 쇼가 어떤 형식의 쇼인지 물으셨던 시기 등을 기억합니다.

(Laughter)

And she was like, "Well, it'll be about you."

오프라가 "당신에 대한 쇼에요."라고 했죠.

I mean, that's just incredible humility.

그건 놀라울 정도의 겸손함이에요.

(Laughter)

He was the father of our nation

그분은 우리나라의 국부였고

and we've got a road to walk in South Africa.

남아프리카가 나아갈 길을 주신거죠.

And everything, they used to call it Madiba magic.

그 모든 것을 사람들은 마디바(만델라의 애칭)의 마술이라고 합니다.

You know, he used to go to a rugby match and we would win.

그 분이 럭비 경기에 가실 때마다 우리가 승리하곤 했습니다.

Anywhere he went, things went well.

그 분이 어디에 가시든 일이 잘 풀렸어요.

But I think that magic will be with us,

저는 그런 마술이 우리와 함께 할 것이라고 믿습니다.

and the important thing is that we carry

그리고 중요한 것은 그 분이 행했던 것을

what he stood for.

우리가 이어갈 것이라는 점이죠.

And so that's what I'm going to try and do,

그게 제가 했으면 하는 바람이고 또 그렇게 할 겁니다.

and that's what people all over South Africa are trying to do.

그게 바로 남아프리카 전역의 모든 사람들이 이루고자 하는 바이겠지요.
