When I opened Mott Hall Bridges Academy in 2010,

my goal was simple:

Now to some, this was an audacious goal,

because our school is located in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn --

one of the most underserved and violent neighborhoods

그곳은 뉴욕시를 통틀어서 가장 낙후됐을 뿐 아니라

in all of New York City.

폭력이 난무하는 곳이죠.

Like many urban schools with high poverty rates,

그래서 빈곤율이 높은 도시에 있는 다수의 학교처럼

we face numerous challenges,

수많은 도전에 직면했습니다.

like finding teachers who can empathize

이렇게 낙후된 지역 사회의 복잡한 상황에 공감하는

with the complexities of a disadvantaged community,

lack of funding for technology,

기술 교육을 위한 지원금도 적고

low parental involvement

학부모의 참여도 거의 없으며

and neighborhood gangs that recruit children as early as fourth grade.

이웃하는 갱단에선 4학년 짜리를 조직원으로 끌어들이는 환경이었으니까요.

So here I was,

그런 환경 속에서 저는

the founding principal of a middle school that was a district public school,

지역 공립 중학교를 설립한 교장이 되었고

and I only had 45 kids to start.

학교를 시작할 당시에 학생 수는 45명밖에 안 됐죠.

Thirty percent of them had special needs.

그중 30%는 특수교육이 필요했고

Eighty-six percent of them were below grade level

86%는 학년에 비해 영어와 수학 실력이

in English and in math.

뒤떨어진 학생들이었으며

And 100 percent were living below the poverty level.

100%의 학생이 빈곤선 이하로 살고 있었습니다.

If our children are not in our classrooms,

이 아이들이 교실에 있지 못한다면

how will they learn?

어떻게 배울 수 있을까요?

And if they're not learning,

그리고 배우지 못한다면

where would they end up?

아이들의 종착역은 어디가 될까요?

It was evident when I would ask my 13-year-old,

그 답의 근거가 될 만한 질문을 13살밖에 안 된

"Young man,

어린 학생한테 했었는데요.

where do you see yourself in five years?"

5년 후에 넌 어디에 있을 것 같냐고 물었을 때

And his response:

그 아이는

"I don't know if I'm gonna live that long."

그때까지 살 수나 있을지 모르겠다고 답했죠.

Or to have a young woman say to me

다른 여학생 하나는 저에게 이런 말도 하더군요.

that she had a lifelong goal of working in a fast-food restaurant.

인생의 목표가 패스트푸드 점에서 일하는 거라고요.

To me, this was unacceptable.

전 그것을 용납할 수 없었죠.

It was also evident that they had no idea

그것은 그 아이들이 지금 사는 곳 너머에 있는

that there was a landscape of opportunity

또 다른 터전에 기회의 장이 있다는 것을

that existed beyond their neighborhood.

모른다는 증거였기 때문입니다.

We call our students "scholars," because they're lifelong learners.

저희는 우리 학생들을 '학자'라고 하는데 평생 동안 배우는 사람이기 때문이죠.

And the skills that they learn today

그 아이들이 오늘 배우는 기술은

will prepare them for college and career readiness.

훗날 대학 진학이나 취업 준비에 도움이 될 것입니다.

I chose the royal colors of purple and black,

저는 왕족의 색상인 보라색과 검은색을 선택했는데요.

because I want them to be reminded that they are descendants of greatness,

그 이유는 그들이 위대한 조상의 후손임을 상기시켜 주고 싶어서였죠.

and that through education,

그리고 교육을 통해서

they are future engineers,

그들이 미래의 기술자와

scientists,

과학자

entrepreneurs

기업가뿐 아니라

and even leaders who can and will take over this world.

더 나아가선 지도자로서 이 세상을 이어받게 될 테니까요.

To date,

지금까지

we have had three graduating classes,

at a 98 --

At a 98-percent graduation rate.

This is nearly 200 children,

It was a cold day in January

when my scholar, Vidal Chastanet, met Brandon Stanton,

Brandon shared the story of a young man from Brownsville

Vidal embodies the story of so many of our underprivileged children

비달은 생존에 어려움을 겪는

다수의 소외 계층 아이들이 살아가는 이야기의 상징인데

who are struggling to survive,

which is why we must make education a priority.

이것이 우리가 교육을 우선순위에 둬야 하는 이유입니다.

Brandon's post created a global sensation

브랜든이 올린 글은 전 세계에 돌풍을 일으켰고

that touched the lives of millions.

수백만의 마음에 감동을 주었습니다.

This resulted in 1.4 million dollars being raised

for our scholars to attend field trips to colleges and universities,

Summer STEAM programs,

You need to understand

that when 200 young people from Brownsville visited Harvard,

they now understood

that a college of their choice was a real possibility.

And the impossibilities that had been imposed upon them

by a disadvantaged community

were replaced by hope and purpose.

희망과 목표를 통해서 바꿀 수 있다는 것도 알게 됐다는 겁니다.

The revolution in education is happening in our schools,

그러한 교육 혁명이 우리 학교의 교육에서 가능했던 것은

with adults who provide love,

교사들이 보여준 사랑과

structure,

체계

support

지원

and knowledge.

그리고 지식이 있었기 때문입니다.

These are the things that inspire children.

아이들은 그것들을 통해서 격려를 받은 거고요.

But it is not an easy task.

하지만 쉬운 일은 아닙니다.

And there are high demands

수요는 많습니다.

within an education system that is not perfect.

불완전한 교육 체계에서요.

But I have a dynamic group of educators

하지만 제 주위엔 아주 막강한 교사들이 있어서

who collaborate as a team to determine what is the best curriculum.

팀을 이루어 무엇이 최고의 교육과정인지 결정합니다.

They take time beyond their school day,

그리고 교사들은 수업일 외에도 시간을 내고

and come in on weekends

주말에도 출근하며

and even use their own money to often provide resources

필요한 것이 없을 때는

when we do not have it.

사비를 들여서 구입하기도 합니다.

And as the principal,

그리고 교장으로서 저는

I have to inspect what I expect.

제가 기대하는 것들을 점검합니다.

So I show up in classes

그래서 전 교실로 가서

and I conduct observations to give feedback,

수업 참관을 한 후 피드백을 제시하죠.

because I want my teachers to be just as successful

우리 교사들이 '모트 홀 브리지 아카데미'의 명성만큼

as the name Mott Hall Bridges Academy.

성공하기 원하는 마음도 있기 때문입니다.

And I give them access to me every single day,

그리고 저는 하루도 빠짐없이 저와 연락할 수 있도록

which is why they all have my personal cell number,

제 개인 휴대 전화 번호를

including my scholars and those who graduated --

재학생과 졸업생까지 다 알려 줬습니다.

which is probably why I get phone calls and text messages

그게 제가 새벽 3시에도 통화를 하고

at three o'clock in the morning.

문자를 받는 이유인 거 같군요.

But we are all connected to succeed,

우리는 모두 성공을 위해서 연결된 것이며

and good leaders do this.

훌륭한 지도자들은 그렇게 하죠.

Tomorrow's future is sitting in our classrooms.

교실에 앉아 있는 아이들이야말로 내일의 미래입니다.

And they are our responsibility.

그리고 그 아이들은 우리의 책임이기도 하죠.

That means everyone in here,

그 말은 이 자리에 모여서

and those who are watching the screen.

화면을 보는 우리 모두의 책임이라는 겁니다.

We must believe in their brilliance,

우리는 그들이 우수하다는 것을 믿어야 하며

and remind them by teaching them

교육에 정말 힘이 있다는 것을

that there indeed is power in education.

아이들에게 가르침으로서 상기시켜 줘야 합니다.
