I was one of the founding members of the Axis of Evil Comedy Tour.

And then there was me, the Iranian-American of the group.

Now, being Iranian-American presents its own set of problems,

as you know.

Those two countries aren't getting along these days.

So it causes a lot of inner conflict, you know,

like part of me likes me, part of me hates me.

Part of me thinks I should have a nuclear program,

the other part thinks I can't be trusted with one.

そいつには信頼は置けないと思う私がいます

These are dilemmas I have every day.

私が毎日感じているジレンマです

But I was born in Iran; I'm now an American citizen,

生まれはイラン 今はアメリカ人

which means I have the American passport,

要はアメリカのパスポートで

which means I can travel.

旅行ができるんです

Because if you only have the Iranian passport,

イランのパスポートだけで

you're kind of limited to the countries you can go to with open arms,

行ける国は限定されていて

迎えてくれる国と言えば

you know -- Syria, Venezuela, North Korea.

(Laughter)

So, anyone who's gotten their passport in America will tell you,

アメリカでパスポートを取得した人は

依然として出生国の記入が

when you get it, it still says what country you were born in.

あると言うでしょう

So I remember getting my American passport.

私も取得した時を覚えています

I was like, "Woo-hoo! I'm going to travel."

「よし! 旅行にいこう!」と喜んで開くと

And I opened it up, it said, "Born in Iran." I'm like, "Oh, come on, man!"

「出生地 イラン」「まじかよ」という気分でした

(笑)

(Laughter)

"I'm trying to go places."

「いろんな場所に行きたいのに」

(Laughter)

But what's interesting is,

面白いことに欧米諸国をこのパスポートで

I've never had trouble in any Western countries with my American passport,

旅行する時 出生地の記述にも関わらず

even though it says, "Born in Iran" -- no problems.

何の問題もありませんでした

Where I've had problems is in some of the Arab countries.

でもアラブ諸国内では問題ありです

I guess some of the Arab countries aren't getting along with Iran either.

イランとの対立が原因でしょう

最近公演の為クウェートに 他の

So I was in Kuwait recently, doing a comedy show

アメリカ人コメディアンと行きました

with some other American comedians.

入国審査で私のアメリカパスポートを見せると

They all went through.

Then the border patrol saw my American passport: "Ah-ha! American, great."

「ああ! アメリカ人ですか 素晴しい」

Then he opened it up. "Born in Iran? Wait."

中を見て「出生地 イラン? 待ちなさい」

(Laughter)

(笑)

And he started asking me questions.

彼は私に質問を始めました

He said, "What is your father's name?"

「父の名前は?」と尋ね

I said, "Well, he's passed away, but his name was Khosro."

「もう他界しましたが ホスロです」と答えました

He goes, "What is your grandfather's name?"

彼は続けて「祖父の名前は?」

「彼はずっと前に他界しましたが」

I said, "He passed away a long time ago.

「名前はジャバーです」と答えました

His name was Jabbar."

He says, "You wait. I'll be back," and he walked away.

彼は「すぐ戻ります」と言って立ち去りました

祖父がどんな事をしでかしたのか

And I started freaking out,

because I don't know what kind of crap my grandfather was into.

知る由もなく 怖くなってきました

(笑)

(Laughter)

男が戻って「200年間待ってたぞ」

Thought the guy was going to come back and be like,

「祖父の駐車違反が延滞していてね」

"We've been looking for you for 200 years."

(笑)

(Laughter)

"Your grandfather has a parking violation. It's way overdue.

「20億ドル未返済なんですよ」

とか言うのではと考えていました

You owe us two billion dollars."

(Laughter)

But as you can see, when I talk, I speak with an American accent,

私の話を聞いて分かる通り

アメリカ訛りなので

which you would think, as an Iranian-American actor,

イラン系アメリカ人として どんな役でも

I should be able to play any part, good, bad, what have you.

こなせると思うのではないでしょうか

But a lot of times in Hollywood,

ハリウッドでは往々にして

when casting directors find out you're of Middle Eastern descent,

監督が中東出身のキャストを見つけると

they go, "Oh, you're Iranian. Great!

「イラン人か 素晴しい」と言ってこう尋ねます

Can you say 'I will kill you in the name of Allah?'"

「アッラーの名の下 お前を殺す」って言える?

I go, "I could say that, but what if I were to say,

言えるけど これはどうかな

'Hello. I'm your doctor'?"

「やあ 私があなたの担当医だ」

They go, "Great! And then you hijack the hospital."

監督は「いいね そして病院をハイジャックするんだ」と続きます

(Laughter)

(笑)

Like, I think you're missing the point here.

どうも要点が分かってもらえていないようです

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind playing bad guys.

誤解しないでください 悪人を演じるのは構いません

I want to play a bad guy. I want to rob a bank.

悪人を演じたいです 銀行強盗役をやりたいんです

I want to rob a bank in a film,

映画で銀行強盗をしてみたいです

but do it with a gun, not with a bomb strapped around me, right?

でも銃でやらせてください 爆弾を体に巻くのはごめんです

(Laughter)

(笑)

Because I imagine the director: "Maz, I think your character

監督が「マズ 体に爆弾を巻いた」

「銀行強盗はどうだ」と言うのを想像できるからです

would rob the bank with a bomb around him."

"Why would I do that?

なんでそんなことするんですか?

If I want the money, why would I kill myself?"

金目当てなのになぜ自爆するんですか?

(Laughter)

(笑)

そうでしょ

Right?

(Applause)

(拍手)

"Gimme all your money, or I'll blow myself up!"

「金を出せ さもないと自爆するぞ」

(Laughter)

(笑)

"Well, then blow yourself up.

「じゃあ自爆してもらおうかな」

(Laughter)

Just do it outside, please."

「外でやって下さいね」

(Laughter)

(笑)

But the fact is, there's good people everywhere.

でも実際はいい人はいたる所にいます

That's what I try and show in my stand-up, good people everywhere.

どこにでもいます それが私の言いたいことです

1人の行いでそれが台無しになります

All it takes in one person to mess it up.

数ヶ月前ニューヨークのタイムズスクウェアで

Like a couple months ago in Times Square in New York,

パキスタン系イスラム教徒の男が車の爆破を企てました

there was a Pakistani Muslim guy who tried to blow up a car bomb.

その夜 偶然私も公演のため

Now, I happened to be in Times Square that night doing a comedy show.

タイムズスクウェアにいました

And a few months before that, there was a white American guy in Austin, Texas

その数ヶ月前 テキサス オースティンで国税庁に

飛行機衝突をもくろんだ白人のアメリカ人男性がいました

who flew his airplane into the IRS building,

and I happened to be in Austin that day doing a stand-up comedy show.

その日も偶然オースティンにいて

ライブショーをしていました

Now I'll tell you, as a Middle-Eastern male,

中東出身の男性として言いますが

when you show up around a lot of these activities,

こんな出来事が重なると

you start feeling guilty at one point.

なにか罪悪感を覚え ニュースを見ながら

(Laughter)

「俺も関与してるのか?」という気分になります

I was watching the news. I'm like, "Am I involved in this crap?"

(笑)

(Laughter)

"I didn't get the memo. What's going on?"

「台本もらってないぞ どうなってんだ?」

(Laughter)

(笑)

But what was interesting was,

面白い事に そのパキスタン系イスラム教徒の

the Pakistani Muslim guy -- see, he gives a bad name to Muslims

男によって世界中のイスラム教徒や中東出身者

and Middle Easterners and Pakistanis from all over the world.

そしてパキスタン人の評判を悪くした点です

And one thing that happened there was also the Pakistani Taliban

もうひとつはパキスタン タリバンが

took credit for that failed car bombing.

その爆破未遂について関与を認めたことです

My question is: Why would you take credit for a failed car bombing?

なぜ爆破未遂だったにも関わらず

自分たちの手柄としたのでしょうか?

"We just want to say:

「我々が言いたかったのは」

we tried."

「努力はしたということだ」

(Laughter)

(笑)

"And furthermore ...

「さらに言えば」

(Laughter)

「考えることに意義がある」

it is the thought that counts."

(Laughter)

(笑)

(Applause)

"And in conclusion, win some, lose some."

「つまり いつもうまくいくとはかぎらない」

(Laughter)

(笑)

But what happened was, when the white guy flew his plane into the building,

白人が飛行機を飛ばした時は

国内にいた私の中東出身の友達全員が

I know all my Middle Eastern and Muslim friends in the States

テレビを眺めながら「中東出身者はごめんだ」

were watching TV, going,

「ハサンじゃないでくれ フセインもだ」

"Please, don't be Middle Eastern. Don't be Hassan or Hussein."

そしてジャックという名前が流れると「よし!」

And the name came out: Jack. I'm like, "Woooo! That's not one of us!"

「中東じゃない」という具合でした

But I kept watching the news in case they came back,

でもその後もニュースを見ていました

「事件の直前 彼はイスラム教に改宗した模様です」

and were like, "Before he did it, he converted to Islam."

「ちくしょう! どうしてなんだ ジャック?」となると思ったからです

"Damn it! Why Jack? Why?"

But the fact is, I've been lucky

しかし実際には 私は世界中

to get a chance to perform all over the world,

中東でもたくさん公演ができる

and I did a lot of shows in the Middle East.

幸せ者で ちょうど七カ国での

I just did a seven-country solo tour.

単独公演を終えたばかりです

I was in Oman, and I was in Saudi Arabia.

オマーンに行き 次にサウジアラビア

ドバイにも行きました

I was in Dubai.

And it's great, there's good people everywhere.

素晴しいことによい人はどこにでもいます

And you learn great things about these places.

更に各地の素晴しいことを学べます

I encourage people always to go visit these places.

こういう所に行く事をいつも薦めているんです

例えば ドバイ すごいところです

For example, Dubai -- cool place.

They're obsessed with having the biggest, tallest, longest, as we all know.

ご存知の通り 彼らは世界一が大好きです

ドバイモールというショッピングセンターがありますが

They have a mall there, the Dubai Mall.

とても大きく 移動にタクシーを使います

It is so big, they have taxis in the mall.

I was walking. I heard, "Beep! Beep!" I'm like, "What are you doing here?"

歩いているとクラクションが聞こえ

「ここになぜ?」と思っていると

He goes, "I'm going to the Zara store. It's three miles away.

「3マイル先のZaraの店に向かってるんだ」

「道を開けて どいてどいて」

Out of my way. Out of my way. Out of my way."

(Laughter)

And what's crazy -- there's a recession going on, even in Dubai,

奇妙な点はドバイの景気後退は

物価に反映されないことです

but you wouldn't know by the prices.

Like in the Dubai Mall, they sell frozen yogurt by the gram.

ドバイモールでは フローズン ヨーグルトを

グラム単位で量り売りしており

It's like a drug deal.

麻薬取引みたいなものです

I was walking by. The guy goes, "Psst! Habibi, my friend."

横を通ると「こっち お兄さん」と男性が現れ

(Laughter)

(笑)

"You want some frozen yogurt?

「フローズン ヨーグルト食べる?」

(Laughter)

Come here. Come here. Come here.

「こっちこっち ほら」

I have one gram, five gram, 10 gram. How many gram do you want?"

「1g 5g 10gもあるよ どんだけ食べる?」

(Laughter)

(笑)

I bought five grams. 10 dollars. 10 dollars! I said, "What's in this?"

5gを買い 「10ドルも?何が入ってるの?」と聞いてしまいました

He's like, "Good stuff, man. Colombian. Top of the line."

彼は「コロンビア産の最高のやつさ」と答えました

(Laughter)

中東や中南米の国を

The other thing you learn when you travel in these countries,

旅行している時に学べる

in the Middle East, Latin American, South American countries,

もうひとつの事と言えば

a lot of times when they build stuff, there's no rules and regulations.

なにか建築する際 ルールも

規制もなにもないということです

For example, I took my two-year-old son to the playground at the Dubai Mall.

例えば 2歳の息子をドバイモールの遊び場に

And I've taken him to playgrounds all over the United States.

連れて行きました 息子をアメリカ中の

And when you put your two-year-old on a slide in the United States,

遊び場に連れて行きました アメリカでは

滑り台に 終盤減速できるように

they put something on the slide

to slow the kid down as he comes down the slide.

何か工夫がされています

Not in the Middle East.

中東では違います

(Laughter)

(笑)

I put my two-year-old on the slide, he went whoosh! He took off!

滑り台に息子をやると ヒューっと滑りだし

(Laughter)

下に行き「息子はどこだ?」と言うと

I went down and, "Where's my son?" "On the third floor, sir. Third floor."

「三階ですよ お父さん 三階」

(笑)

(Laughter)

"You take a taxi. You go to Zara. Make a left."

「タクシーに乗り Zaraに行って 左です」

(Laughter)

(笑)

"Try the yogurt. It's very good. Little expensive."

「ヨーグルトいかが? 美味しいけど少し高いよ」

(Laughter)

But one thing I try to do with my stand-up is break stereotypes.

私の公演の目標はステレオタイプの打破です

私も固定観念を抱く罪悪感を感じます

And I've been guilty of stereotyping as well.

ドバイにはインド人がたくさんおり

I was in Dubai. And there's a lot of Indians who work in Dubai.

収入はさほど良くありません

And they don't get paid that well.

And I got it in my head that all the Indians must be workers.

成功を収めたインド人もいることを忘れ

ドバイのインド人は全て労働者と決めつけていました

I forgot there's obviously successful Indians in Dubai too.

私の公演の最中に

I was doing a show, and they said, "We'll send a driver to pick you up."

「迎えに運転手を送るよ」と言われ

I went down to the lobby, and saw this Indian guy.

ロビーに降りるとインド人が1人いて

「彼に違いない」と思いました

I go, "He must be my driver,"

since he's standing there in a cheap suit, thin mustache, staring at me.

ひげをはやし 安いスーツを着て 私を見ていたからです

近寄り「私の迎えですか?」と問うと

I say, "Excuse me, are you my driver?"

「いや ホテルのオーナーだ」答えました

He goes, "No, sir. I own the hotel."

(Laughter)

(笑)

I go, "I'm sorry! Why were you staring at me?"

そこで「失礼 なぜ私を見ていたんです?」と問うと

He goes, "I thought you were my driver."

「私の迎えだと思ったからね」と答えました

(Laughter)

(拍手)

(Applause)

(Laughter)

(笑)

I'll leave you with this: I try, with my stand-up, to break stereotypes,

私の公演の目標は中東出身の我々や

present Middle Easterners and Muslims in a positive light.

イスラム教徒に対するステレオタイプの打破です

そして数年後に我々を肯定的に

I hope that in the coming years,

more film and television programs come out of Hollywood,

映し出すハリウッド映画が

presenting us in a positive light.

もっと出てくるといいですね

Who knows? Maybe one day, we'll even have our own James Bond. Right?

将来は中東版007さえ放映されているかも

"My name is Bond.

「私の名はボンド, ジャマール ボンドだ」

Jamal Bond."
