There is the gallery somewhere

and there is a young girl, age 23,

standing in the middle of the space.

In the front of her is a table.

उसके सामने टेबल है.

On the table there are 76 objects

और टेबल पे ७६ चीजें है

for pleasure and for pain.

ख़ुशी के लिए और दर्द के लिए|

Some of the objects are

कुछ चीजे

a glass of water, a coat, a shoe, a rose.

पानी का ग्लास, कोट, जूता, गुलाब|

But also the knife, the razor blade, the hammer

और छुरा, रेजर ब्लेड, हातोडा

and the pistol with one bullet.

और एक गोली के साथ पिस्तौल भी है|

There are instructions which say,

वहाँ पे सुचनाए है जो बताती है,

"I'm an object.

" मै एक चीज हूँ|

You can use everything on the table on me.

आप टेबल पर से सभी चीजे मुझ पर इस्तेमाल कर सकते है|

I'm taking all responsibility -- even killing me.

मैं ही इसकी जिम्मेदारी लेती हूँ-- मुझे मारने की भी|

And the time is six hours."

और छह घंटे का समय है|"

The beginning of this performance was easy.

इस कृत्य की शुरुवात आसन थी|

People would give me the glass of water to drink,

लोग मुझे पिने के लिए पानी देते,

they'd give me the rose.

But very soon after,

there was a man who took the scissors and cut my clothes,

And the men didn't rape me because it was just a normal opening,

and it was all public,

और यह सभी सार्वजनिक हो रहा था,

and they were with their wives.

और वोह उनकी पत्नी के साथ थे|

They carried me around and put me on the table,

and put the knife between my legs.

और मेरे पैरों के बिच में छुरा रखा|

And somebody took the pistol and bullet and put it against my temple.

And another person took the pistol and they started a fight.

और एक व्यक्ती ने पिस्तौल लियी और झगड़ा चालु किया|

And after six hours were finished,

और छह घंटे खतम हुए,

I...

मैने...

started walking towards the public.

लोगों के तरफ चल के जाना चालु किया|

I was a mess.

मैं पूरी तरह बिखर गई थी|

I was half-naked, I was full of blood and tears were running down my face.

मैं अर्ध नग्न थी, रक्त से भरी हुई और चेहरा आंसू से भरा हुआ था|

And everybody escaped, they just ran away.

They could not confront myself, with myself as a normal human being.

And then --

is I went to the hotel, it was at two in the morning.

Welcome to the performance world.

प्रदर्शन की दुनिया में आप का स्वगर है|

First of all, let's explain what the performance is.

पहले यह बताते है की प्रदर्शन क्या होता है|

So many artists, so many different explanations,

इतने सारे कलाकार, इतने सारे अलग व्याख्या,

but my explanation for performance is very simple.

लेकिन मेरी प्रदर्शन के लिए व्याख्या आसान है|

Performance is a mental and physical construction

प्रदर्शन बौद्धिक है और शारीरिक बनावट

that the performer makes in a specific time

जो कर्ता कुछ विशिष्ट समय में

in a space in front of an audience

श्रोताओं के सामने करता है

and then energy dialogue happens.

और उसके बाद उर्जा आलाप होता है|

The audience and the performer make the piece together.

श्रोता और कर्ता एक साथ एक टुकड़ा करते है|

And the difference between performance and theater is huge.

प्रदर्शन और रंगमंच में बहुत अंतर है|

In the theater, the knife is not a knife

रंगमंच पे छुरा, छुरा नहीं होता

and the blood is just ketchup.

और खून सिर्फ सौस होता है|

In the performance, the blood is the material,

प्रदर्शन में खून एक पदार्थ है,

and the razor blade or knife is the tool.

और रेजर ब्लेड या छुरा हथियार|

It's all about being there in the real time,

वोह सभी वहाँ पर मौजूदा स्थितीपर आधारित है|

and you can't rehearse performance,

और आप प्रदर्शन का सराव नहीं कर सकते,

because you can't do many of these types of things twice -- ever.

क्यूंकि आप इसमें से बहुत से कार्य दोबारा नहीं कर सकते--कभीभी|

Which is very important, the performance is --

महत्वपूर्ण क्या है, प्रदर्शन|

you know, all human beings are always afraid of very simple things.

We're afraid of suffering, we're afraid of pain,

हम पीड़ा और दर्द से घबराते है|

we're afraid of mortality.

हमे मृत्यु से डर है|

So what I'm doing --

I'm staging these kinds of fears in front of the audience.

मैं इस सभी प्रकार के भय को श्रोताओ के सामने रखती हूँ|

I'm using your energy,

मैं आप की उर्जा का इस्तेमाल करती हूँ,

and with this energy I can go and push my body as far as I can.

And then I liberate myself from these fears.

And I'm your mirror.

If I can do this for myself, you can do it for you.

After Belgrade, where I was born,

I went to Amsterdam.

And you know, I've been doing performances

और आपको पता है, मैं प्रदर्शन पिछले

since the last 40 years.

४० साल से कर रही हूँ|

And here I met Ulay,

और यहाँ मैं उले से मिली,

and he was the person I actually fell in love with.

और इस आदमी के साथ प्यार हुआ|

And we made, for 12 years, performances together.

और हमने १२ साल तक एक साथ प्रदर्शन किया|

You know the knife and the pistols and the bullets,

I exchange into love and trust.

So to do this kind work you have to trust the person completely

because this arrow is pointing to my heart.

So, heart beating and adrenaline is rushing and so on,

is about trust, is about total trust to another human being.

Our relationship was 12 years,

हमारे १२ साल के रिश्ते में

and we worked on so many subjects, both male and female energy.

और हमने बहुत सारे विषयो में काम किया,

And as every relationship comes to an end, ours went too.

और जैसे की हर रिश्ता ख़त्म होता है, हमारा भी हुआ|

We didn't make phone calls like normal human beings do

हमने कोई फोन नहीं किया जैसे इतर लोग करते है

and say, you know, "This is over."

और बोलते है, "यह आगे नहीं बढेगा|"

We walked the Great Wall of China to say goodbye.

हमने ग्रेट वॉल ऑफ़ चाइना चले अलविदा कहने के लिए|

I started at the Yellow Sea, and he started from the Gobi Desert.

मैंने यलो सी से शुरुवात कियी, और उसने गोबी रेगिस्तान से|

We walked, each of us, three months,

two and a half thousand kilometers.

It was the mountains, it was difficult.

It was climbing, it was ruins.

It was, you know, going through the 12 Chinese provinces,

this was before China was open in '87.

And we succeeded to meet in the middle

to say goodbye.

And then our relationship stopped.

And now, it completely changed how I see the public.

And one very important piece I made in those days

was "Balkan Baroque."

And this was the time of the Balkan Wars,

and I wanted to create some very strong, charismatic image,

something that could serve for any war at any time,

because the Balkan Wars are now finished, but there's always some war, somewhere.

So here I am washing

two and a half thousand dead, big, bloody cow bones.

You can't wash the blood, you never can wash shame off the wars.

आप खून कभी धो नहीं सकते, नाकि जंग की शर्मिंदगी|

So I'm washing this six hours, six days, and wars are coming off these bones,

तोह मैं इसे छह घंटे, छह दिन और हड्डियों से जंग हो रही है|

and becoming possible -- an unbearable smell.

और संभव हुआ-- न सहने वाली बदबू|

But then something stays in the memory.

लेकिन कुछ यांदें रहती है|

I want to show you the one who really changed my life,

जिसने मेरी पूरी जिन्दगी बदल दी, मैं वो आप को दिखानी चाहती हूँ

and this was the performance in MoMa, which I just recently made.

और यह प्रदर्शन है जो की मने हाल ही में मोमा में किया

This performance -- when I said to the curator,

यह प्रदर्शन-- जब मैंने क्यूरेटर से पुछा

"I'm just going to sit at the chair,

" मैं सिर्फ खुर्सी पे बैठने वाली हूँ,

and there will be an empty chair at the front,

और मेरे सामने एक खाली खुर्सी होगी,

and anybody from the public can come and sit as long as they want."

और लोगों में से जो चाहे आके कितने भी समय के लिए बैठ सकता है|"

The curator said to me,

क्यूरेटर मुझे बोले,

"That's ridiculous, you know, this is New York,

"जानती हो, यह बकवास है, यह न्यू यॉर्क है,

this chair will be empty,

यह खुर्सीखाली रहेगी,

nobody has time to sit in front of you."

तुम्हारे सामने बैठने के लिए किसी के पास समय नहीं है|

(Laughter)

But I sit for three months.

लेकिन मैं आठ महीने बैठी|

And I sit everyday, eight hours --

और हर रोज, आठ घंटा--

the opening of the museum --

म्यूजियम के खोलने के समय--

and 10 hours on Friday when the museum is open 10 hours,

और १० घंटे शुक्रवार को जब म्यूजियम १० घंटे खुला रहता है

and I never move.

और मैं कभी नहीं हिली|

And I removed the table and I'm still sitting,

औरमैंने टेबल निकल दिया और बैठी रही|

and this changed everything.

This performance, maybe 10 or 15 years ago --

nothing would have happened.

But the need of people to actually experience something different,

the public was not anymore the group --

relation was one to one.

I was watching these people, they would come and sit in front of me,

but they would have to wait for hours and hours and hours

to get to this position,

and finally, they sit.

And what happened?

They are observed by the other people,

उनको बाकी लोग देख रहे थे,

they're photographed, they're filmed by the camera,

फोटो निकाल रहे थे, फिल्म कर रहे थे|

they're observed by me

मैंने उनपर ध्यान दिया

and they have nowhere to escape except in themselves.

और उनको उनसे ही बाहर निकलना था|

And that makes a difference.

और यही बदलाव लाता है|

There was so much pain and loneliness,

उसमे बहुत दर्द और अकेलापन था

there's so much incredible things when you look in somebody else's eyes,

वहाँ बहुतसी अचंबित करने वाली बाटी होती है जब आप किसी और के आँखों में देखते है|

because in the gaze with that total stranger,

क्यूनी उनकी अजनबी आँखों की चमक से

that you never even say one word -- everything happened.

जिनसे एक शब्द से बात नहीं कियी-- सब कुछ हो गया|

And I understood when I stood up from that chair after three months,

और मुझे पता चला जब मैं उस खुर्सी से तीन महीने बाद उठी,

I am not the same anymore.

मैं अब वही इन्सान नहीं रही|

And I understood that I have a very strong mission,

और मुझे पता चला की मेरा बड़ा मिशन है,

that I have to communicate this experience

to everybody.

And this is how, for me, was born the idea

और ऐसे ही मुझ में एक नई कल्पना ने जन्म लिया

to have an institute of immaterial performing arts.

पदार्थहिन् प्रदर्शन कला इंस्टिट्यूट बनाना ने की|

Because thinking about immateriality,

क्युंकी पदार्थ के बिना सोचना,

performance is time-based art.

एक समय आधारित कला कला है|

It's not like a painting.

यह पेंटिंग के समान नहीं है|

You have the painting on the wall, the next day it's there.

चित्र आप के दिवार पर है, कल भी उधर ही रहेगी|

Performance, if you are missing it, you only have the memory,

प्रदर्शन, अगर आप इसकी कमी महसूस कर रहे है, आप के पास सिर्फ एक याद है,

or the story of somebody else telling you,

या किसी और की कहानी कोई और बता रहा है,

but you actually missed the whole thing.

लेकिन आप पूरी हिज भूल गए|

So you have to be there.

तोह आपको वहाँ होना पड़ता है

And in my point, if you talk about immaterial art,

मेरा मतलब है, अगर आप पदार्थहिन् कला की बात करते है,

music is the highest -- absolutely highest art of all,

संगीत सबसे ऊपर है-- सच में सभी कलाओ से ऊपर|

because it's the most immaterial.

क्यूंकि यह पूरा पदार्थहिन् है|

And then after this is performance, and then everything else.

और आखिर में यह प्रदर्शन है, और उसके बाद बाकी सब|

That's my subjective way.

This institute is going to happen in Hudson, upstate New York,

यह इंस्टिट्यूट न्यू यॉर्क में हडसन में खुलेगी,

and we are trying to build with Rem Koolhaas, an idea.

And it's very simple.

If you want to get experience, you have to give me your time.

You have to sign the contract before you enter the building,

that you will spend there a full six hours,

you have to give me your word of honor.

It's something so old-fashioned,

but if you don't respect your own word of honor and you leave before --

that's not my problem.

But it's six hours, the experience.

And then after you finish, you get a certificate of accomplishment,

so get home and frame it if you want.

This is orientation hall.

The public comes in, and the first thing you have to do is dress in lab coats.

It's this importance

यह उतना महत्व पूर्ण है

of stepping from being just a viewer into experimenter.

And then you go to the lockers

and you put your watch, your iPhone, your iPod, your computer

और आपक आप की घडी, फ़ोन, आय पॉड, कंप्यूटर

and everything digital, electronic.

And you are getting free time for yourself for the first time.

Because there is nothing wrong with technology,

our approach to technology is wrong.

We are losing the time we have for ourselves.

This is an institute to actually give you back this time.

यह वो इंस्टिट्यूट है जो की आपको यह समय वापस देगी|

So what you do here,

तोह आप यहा पे क्या करते है|

first you start slow walking, you start slowing down.

पहले आप धीरे चलना शुरू करते है, आप धीमे होने लगते है|

You're going back to simplicity.

आप सामान्यता की तरफ जा रहे हो|

After slow walking, you're going to learn how to drink water --

धीमे चलने के बाद आप पानी कैसे पिए सीखते हो|

very simple, drinking water for maybe half an hour.

एक दम आसन, आधा घंटा पानी पिने का|

After this, you're going to the magnet chamber,

इसके बाद आप चुम्बकीय चेंबर में जाओगे|

where you're going to create some magnet streams on your body.

जहा आप अपनी शरीर पे चुम्बकीय लहरे पैदा करोगे|

Then after this, you go to crystal chamber.

इसके बाद आप क्रिस्टल चेंबर में जाओगे|

After crystal chamber, you go to eye-gazing chamber,

क्रिस्टल चेंबर के बाद आँख विद्या चेंबर में जाओगे|

after eye-gazing chamber, you go to a chamber where you are lying down.

आय गेज्हिंग चेंबर के बाद आप एक चेंबर में जाते हो, जहाँ आप सो रहे होते है|

So it's the three basic positions of the human body,

तो यह ,मानवी शारीर की सामान्य बैठक है|

sitting, standing and lying.

यह तीन में से एक सामान्य है|

And slow walking.

और धीरे चलना|

And there is a sound chamber.

वहाँ ध्वनी चेंबर है|

And then after you've seen all of this,

और उसके बाद आपने ये सब देखा होगा|

and prepared yourself mentally and physically,

और खुद को मानसिक और शारीरिक रूप से तैयार रखा होगा|

then you are ready to see something with a long duration,

like in immaterial art.

It can be music, it can be opera, it can be a theater piece,

You go to the long duration chairs because now you are comfortable.

In the long duration chairs,

you're transported to the big place where you're going to see the work.

And if you fall asleep,

which is very possible because it's been a long day,

लंबा दिन होने की वजह से जो की संभव है

you're going to be transported to the parking lot.

आप को पार्किंग में ले जाया जाएगा|

And you know, sleeping is very important.

और आप को पता है, निंद जरुरी है|

In sleeping, you're still receiving art.

निंद में भी, आप कला को अवगत कर रहे होते है|

So in the parking lot you stay for a certain amount of time,

तो पार्किंग में आप कुछ समय व्यतीत करते है|

and then after this you just, you know, go back,

और उसके बाद आप को पता ही है, पीछे जाए|

you see more of the things you like to see

और आप जो चीज देखना चाहते है वो देखते है

or go home with your certificate.

So this institute right now is virtual.

Right now, I am just making my institute in Brazil,

then it's going to be in Australia,

And this is to experience a kind of simple method,

How to count rice for six hours?

It's incredibly important.

You know, you go through this whole range of being bored, being angry,

being completely frustrated, not finishing the amount of rice you're counting.

And then this unbelievable amount of peace you get

when satisfying work is finished --

or counting sand in the desert.

Or having the sound-isolated situation --

या ध्वनी हिन् परिस्तिथि में होते हो--

that you have headphones, that you don't hear anything,

and you're just there together without sound,

और तभी आप वहाँ होते हो ध्वनी के बिना|

with the people experiencing silence, just the simple silence.

लोगो के साथ शांति का अनुभव लेते हो, सिर्फ सामान्य शांति|

We are always doing things we like in our life.

जिंदगी में हमे जो अच्छा लगता है वोह हम करते है|

And this is why you're not changing.

और इसीलिए आप बदल नहीं पा रहे हो|

You do things in life --

आप जिंदगी में कुछ करते हो--

it's just nothing happens if you always do things the same way.

कुछ नहीं होता है अगर आप उसी तरीके से काम करते हो|

But my method is to do things I'm afraid of, the things I fear,

I think failure is important

you are actually repeating yourself over and over again.

And I think that human beings right now need a change,

और मुझे लगता है उसी मनुष्यवर्ग को बदलना जरुरी है|

and the only change to be made is a personal level change.

एक ही बदलाव जरुरी होता है, जो की, खुद में बदलाव|

You have to make the change on yourself.

आप को खुद में एक बदलाव लाना पड़ेगा|

Because the only way to change consciousness

क्यूँकी ध्यान और दुनिया बदलने का

and to change the world around us,

एक ही रास्ता है,

is to start with yourself.

It's so easy to criticize how it's different,

दोष देना बहुत आसान है, कैसे अलग है,

the things in the world and they're not right,

दुनिया की चीजे और वो सही नहीं,

and the governments are corrupted and there's hunger in the world

सरकार भ्रष्टाचारी है और दुनिया में भुकबली जा रहे है|

and there's wars -- the killing.

और युद्ध, खून खराबा है|

But what we do on the personal level --

लेकिन हम यह व्यक्तिगत स्तर पर करते है|

what is our contribution to this whole thing?

in साड़ी चीजो के साथ हमारा संबंध क्या है?

Can you turn to your neighbor, the one you don't know,

क्या आप अपने बाजूवाले के तरफ घुमो गे, जो की आपको पता नहीं है,

and look at them for two full minutes in their eyes, right now?
