ناوم جۆزێفە، ئەندام پەرلەمانم لە کینیا.

وێنایی گوندی ماسای بکەن،

کە ئێوارەیەک،

سەربازانی حکومەت دێن، چواردەوری گوندەکە دەگرن

داوا لە بەتەمەنەکان دەکەن کوڕێک بهێننە قوتابخانە،

من بەو شێوەیە چووم بۆ قوتابخانە

سەربازێک چەکێک دەردەهێنێت

My name is Joseph, a Member of Parliament in Kenya.

و بە باوکمی گوت، ''دەبێت شتێک هەڵبژێریت."

بە ئاسودەییەوە چووم بۆ ئەم قوتابخانەیە،

Picture a Maasai village,

and one evening,

پەیامبەرێکی ئەمریکی بەڕێوەیدەبرد.

government soldiers come, surround the village

یەکەم شت کە پەیامبەرە ئەمریکیەکە پێیدام شیرینێیەک بوو.

and ask each elder to bring one boy to school.

بە هەموو ژیانم شیرینیم تام نەکردبوو.

That's how I went to school --

بۆیە بەخۆمم گوت، لەگەڵ ئەو ژمارە زۆرەی کوڕانە،

pretty much a government guy pointing a gun

and told my father, "You have to make a choice."

ئەوە شوێنی منە.

بەردەوام بووم، (پێکەنین)

I walked very comfortably to this missionary school,

کاتێک هەمووان وازیان لە خوێندن هێنا.

that was run by an American missionary.

خێزانەکەم ڕۆیشتن; بوینە کۆچبەر.

The first thing the American missionary gave me was a candy.

قوتابخانەکە خۆراک و شوێنی مانەوەیان هەبوو، من حەوت ساڵان بووم

I had never in my life ever tasted candy.

کاتێ دادەخرا دەبووایە بە شوێنیاندا بگەڕێم.

So I said to myself, with all these hundred other boys,

٤٠-٥٠ میل، گرنگ نەبوو.

لە دەوەنەکە دەخەوتی، و بەردەوام دەبووی.

this is where I belong.

(Laughter) I stayed.

و مامەوە. نازانم بۆ، بەڵام وامکرد.

When everybody else was dropping out.

بەشێوەیەکی چاوەڕوان نەکراو لە تاقیکردنەوەی نیشتیمانی دەرچووم،

My family moved; we're nomads.

It was a boarding school, I was seven --

خۆم لە قوتابخانەیەکی جوانی کینیا دۆزیەوە.

Every time it closed you had to travel to find them.

و قوتابخانەی ناوەندیم تەواوکرد.

40-50 miles, it doesn't matter.

دەڕۆیشتم، پیاوێکم دۆزیەوە

You slept in the bush, but you kept going.

کە پارەی خوێندنی لە ئەمریکا بۆ دابین کردم.

And I stayed. I don't know why, but I did.

دایکم هێشتا لە تەوێڵەی مانگا دەژیا،

All of a sudden I passed the national examination,

هیچ کام لە براکانم نەدەچوون بۆ قوتابخانە،

و ئەم پیاوە پێی گوتم، "دەی، بڕۆ."

found myself in a very beautiful high school in Kenya.

پارەی خوێندنم هەبوو

لە ئێس تی. زانکۆی لاوڕێنس، سەر بە نیویۆرک;

And I finished high school.

And just walking, I found a man

تەواوم کرد.

دواتر خوێندنی باڵام لە زانکۆی هاڕڤارد.

who gave me a full scholarship to the United States.

My mother still lived in a cow-dung hut,

تەواوم کرد.

none of my brothers were going to school,

دواتر لە دی سی کەمێک کارم کرد:

کتێبێکم بۆ ناشناڵ جیۆگرافیک نووسی و مێژووی ئەمریکام دەوتەوە.

and this man told me, "Here, go."

I got a scholarship

to St. Lawrence University, Upstate New York;

هەر کاتێک دەگەڕامەوە نیشتیمان،

گوێم بۆ کێشەکانیان دەگرت

finished that.

And after that I went to Harvard Graduate School;

خەڵکی نەخۆش، بێ ئاو، هەموو ئەو شتانە

هەموو کات کە دەگەڕامەوە ئەمریکا،

finished that.

بەردەوام بیرم لێیان دەکردەوە،

Then I worked in DC a little bit:

دواتر ڕۆژێک، کەسێکی بە تەمەن چیڕۆکێکی پێوتم بەم شێوەیە بوو:

I wrote a book for National Geographic and taught U.S. history.

ماوەیەکی زۆر بەر لە ئێستا، شەڕێکی گەورە لە نێوان خێڵەکان هەبوو.

And every time, I kept going back home,

listening to their problems --

sick people, people with no water, all this stuff --

ئەم خێڵەیان زۆر لە خێڵی لوهیا دەترسا.

every time I go back to America,

بەردەوام چاودێریان دەنارد تا دڵنیابن کەس هێرشیان ناکاتە سەر.

I kept thinking about them.

Then one day, an elder gave me a story that went like this:

ڕۆژێک، چاودێرەکان بە ڕاکردن هاتنەوە و بە گوندنشینەکانیان گوت،

long time ago, there was a big war between tribes.

"دوژمنەکان وا دێن. تەنها نیو کاتژمێر لێرەوە دوورن."

خەڵکەکە بڵاوبووەوە، شتەکانیان برد، ئامادەی ڕۆیشتن بوون و دەرچوون.

This specific tribe was really afraid of this other Luhya tribe.

بەڵام دوو پیاوی لێبوو:

Every time, they sent scouts to make sure no one attacked them.

یەکێکیان کوێربوو، ئەوەیتر قاچی نەبوو

So one day, the scouts came running and told the villagers,

لە زگماکەوە بەم شێوەیە بوون.

سەرۆک خێڵەکان گوتییان، "نەخێر، ببوورن. ناتوانین بتانبەین، دواماندەخەن

"The enemies are coming. Only half an hour away, they'll be here."

پێویستە ژن و منداڵەکانمان ببەین، و ڕابکەین"

So people scrambled, took their things and ready to go, move out.

بەجێمان و چاوەڕێی مردن بوون.

But there were two men:

one man was blind, one man had no legs

بەڵام ئەم دووانە چارەیەکیان دۆزیەوە.

-- he was born like that.

کوێرەکە وتی، "سەیرکە، من بەهێزم بەڵام ناتوانم ببینم."

The leader of the chiefs said, "No, sorry. We can't take you. You'll slow us down.

بێقاچەکەش وتی، "من دەتوانم ئەوپەڕی دنیا ببینم،

We have to flee our women and children, we have to run."

بەڵام ناتوانم خۆم لە پشیلەیەکیش ڕزگار بکەم."

And they were left behind, waiting to die.

But these two people worked something out.

کوێرەکە کەوتە سەر ئەژنۆ بەم شێوەیە،

The blind man said, "Look, I'm a very strong man but I can't see."

بە بێقاچەکەی گوت وەرە سەر پشتم، و بەرزببەوە.

The man with no legs says, "I can see as far as the end of the world,

ئەوەی سەرەوە دەتوانێت ببینێت، کوێرەکەش دەتوانێت بڕوا.

but I can't save myself from a cat, or whatever animals."

ئەم دووانە کەوتنەڕێ، دوای شوێن پێی گوندنشینەکان کەوتن

تا دۆزیاننەوە و لێیان تێپەڕین.

The blind man went down on his knees like this,

ئەمە لە دانیشتنی بە تەمەنەکان بۆم گێردڕاوەتەوە.

and told the man with no legs to go over his back, and stood up.

The man on top can see, the blind man can walk.

و ئەوە ناوچەیەکی زۆر هەژارنشینە.

نوێنەرایەتی باکوری کینیا دەکەم:

ناوچەیەکی کۆچەری دورە دەستە.

These guys took off, followed the footsteps of the villagers

until they found and passed them.

ئەم پیاوە پێ گوتم، "کەوایە، لێرەیت.

خوێندنێکی باشت لە ئەمریکا خوێندووە، ژیانێکی باشت لە ئەمریکا هەیە:

So, this was told to me in a setup of elders.

چیمان بۆ دەکەی؟

And it's a really poor area.

دەمانەوێت ببیت بە چاوساغمان.

I represent Northern Kenya:

the most nomadic, remote areas you can even find.

لەگەڵت دەبین، ببە بە پێشڕەومان."

هەڵێک هاتەپێش، بەردەوام بیرم لەوە دەکردەوە:

And that man told me, "So, here you are.

You've got a good education from America, you have a good life in America;

"چۆن دەتوانم یارمەتیان بدەم؟

هەموو کات تۆ دەچی بۆ شوێنێک کە ٤٣ ساڵە سەربەخۆیە،

what are you going to do for us?

و هێشتا خزمەتگوزاریە سەرەتایەکانی تەندروستیمان نییە.

We want you to be our eyes, we'll give you the legs.

بە عەرەبانە دەبێت ٣٠کم ببڕێ تا کەسێک بۆ نەخۆشخانە دەگوازیەوە.

We'll walk you, you lead us."

ئاوی پاک فەراهەم نەکراوە.

The opportunity came. I was always thinking about that:

بۆیە وتم، خۆم بۆ ئەم کارە تەرخان دەکەم.

"What can I do to help my people?

ئەمریکا جێدەهێڵم.

Every time you go to an area where for 43 years of independence,

خۆم هەڵدەبژێرم."

مانگی شەش، ئەمریکام جێهێشت،

we still don't have basic health facilities.

خۆم هەڵبژارد لە مانگی ٧ و دەرچووم.

A man has to be transported in a wheelbarrow 30 km for a hospital.

No clean drinking water.

و بۆ ئەوان هاتمەوە،

So I said, "I'm going to dedicate myself.

ئەوە ئامانجی منە.

I'm leaving America.

نۆ مانگ دەبێت کە پلانێکم داناوە.

I'm going to run for office."

Last June, I moved from America,

پلانێک لە پێنج ساڵی داهاتوو،

ran in July election and won.

هەموو کۆچەرێک ئاوی پاکی خواردنەوەی دەبێت.

And I came for them,

بە درێژایی ناوچەکە تۆڕی دابەش کردنی ئاو دادەمەزرێنین.

and that's my goal.

داوای یارمەتی لە هاوڕێکانم لە ئەمریکا دەکەم

Right now I have in place, for the last nine months,

تا یارمەتیمان بدەن بە هێنانی پەرستار یان دکتۆر.

a plan that in five years,

هەوڵ دەدەم ژێرخانی ئابووری باش بکەم.

every nomad will have clean drinking water.

ئەو زانیاریانە بەکاردێنم کە لە ئەمریکا فێریبوویم

We're building dispensaries across that constituency.

و لە کۆمەڵگەکەم

بۆ ئەوەی بەرەوپێشیان بەرین.

هەوڵدەدەم چارەسەری خۆماڵی بۆ کێشەکانمان بدۆزمەوە

I'm asking my friends from America to help

چونکە خەڵکی دەرەوە دەتوانن بێن و یارمەتیمان بدەن،

with bringing nurses or doctors to help us out.

I'm trying to improve infrastructure.

بەڵام ئەگەر یارمەتی خۆمان نەدەین، بەرەوپێش ناچین.

I'm using the knowledge I received from the United States

پلانی ئێستام

ئەوەیە بەردەوام بم لە ناساندنی خوێندکاران لە بواری جیاواز

and from my community

to move them forward.

هەندێکیان ببن بە دکتۆر، و پارێزەر

I'm trying to develop homegrown solutions to our issues

گروپێک لە پسپۆری گشتگیر و جیاواز بەرهەم بهێنین،

because people from outside can come and help us,

تا بتوانن یارمەتیمان بدەن تا کۆمەڵگاکەمان گەشە بکات

but if we don't help ourselves, there's nothing to do.

کە بە دەست قەیرانێکی دارایی گەورە دەناڵێنێت.

My plan right now

as I continue with introducing students to different fields --

کە بەردەوامم لە پەرلەمانتاری

و کاتێک گوێبیستی ئەم هەموو قسانەی لەسەر زانستی ڕووەکی،

some become doctors, some lawyers --

we want to produce a comprehensive group of people,

تەندروستی، دیموکراتی، داهێنانی نوێ دەکەن.

students who can come back and help us see a community grow

هیوادارم ڕۆژێک لە کۆمەڵگە بچوکەکەم

that is in the middle of a huge economic recession.

کە ٢٦٠٠٠ کم چوارگۆشەیە،

پێنج بە قەد دورگەی ڕۆد

As I continue to be a Member of Parliament

بەبێ ڕێگاوبان،

and as I continue listening to all of you talking about botany,

بتوانین ببین بە نموونەیەک تا یارمەتی کەسانیتر بدەین بۆ ئەوەی بەرەوپێش بچن.

health, democracy, new inventions,

زۆر سوپاستان دەکەم.

I'm hoping that one day in my own little community --

(چەپڵەڕێزان)

which is 26,000 square km,

maybe five times Rhode Island --

with no roads,

we'll be able to become a model to help others develop.
