Joseph Lekuton: A parable for Kenya

My name is Joseph, a Member of Parliament in Kenya.

Picture a Maasai village,

and one evening,

government soldiers come, surround the village

and ask each elder to bring one boy to school.

That's how I went to school --

pretty much a government guy pointing a gun

"선택을 하시오"라고 말했습니다

and told my father, "You have to make a choice."

이렇게 저는 학교에 가게 되었습니다

I walked very comfortably to this missionary school,

저는 기쁜 마음으로 미션스쿨에 다녔습니다.

that was run by an American missionary.

그 학교는 미국 선교사가 운영하고 있었고,

The first thing the American missionary gave me was a candy.

그 분이 처음 주신 것은 사탕이었습니다.

I had never in my life ever tasted candy.

저는 생애 처음으로 사탕을 맛보았습니다.

So I said to myself, with all these hundred other boys,

그래서 저는, 다른 수백명의 아이들과 함께한 가운데,

this is where I belong.

이곳이 제가 있을 곳이라고 생각하고 머물러 있었습니다.

(Laughter) I stayed.

(웃음)

When everybody else was dropping out.

다른 모든 학생들은 떨어져 나갔습니다

My family moved; we're nomads.

우리 가족은 이동하였습니다. 유목민이니까요.

It was a boarding school, I was seven --

학교는 기숙학교였고, 저는 7살이었습니다.

Every time it closed you had to travel to find them.

학교가 방학이 되면 가족을 찾아 다녀야했습니다.

40-50 miles, it doesn't matter.

50마일, 40마일, 거리는 상관없었습니다.

You slept in the bush, but you kept going.

덤불 속에서 자기도 하면서, 계속 갔습니다.

And I stayed. I don't know why, but I did.

저는 학교에 남았습니다. 이유는 모르겠지만, 남았습니다.

All of a sudden I passed the national examination,

그러던 어느 날 갑자기 저는 국가시험에 합격해,

found myself in a very beautiful high school in Kenya.

케냐의 아름다운 고등학교에 다니게 되었습니다.

And I finished high school.

고등학교를 졸업하고, 어떤 분을 만나

And just walking, I found a man

who gave me a full scholarship to the United States.

전액장학금을 받아 미국에 가게 되었습니다.

My mother still lived in a cow-dung hut,

저희 어머니는 여전히 소똥으로 된 집에 사시고,

none of my brothers were going to school,

제 형제는 아무도 학교를 다니고 있지 않습니다.

and this man told me, "Here, go."

하지만 (장학금을 준) 그 분은 "자, 가거라" 라고 말씀하셨습니다.

I got a scholarship

to St. Lawrence University, Upstate New York;

finished that.

And after that I went to Harvard Graduate School;

finished that.

Then I worked in DC a little bit:

I wrote a book for National Geographic and taught U.S. history.

And every time, I kept going back home,

listening to their problems --

아픈 사람들, 물이 없는 사람들 등의

sick people, people with no water, all this stuff --

every time I go back to America,

I kept thinking about them.

Then one day, an elder gave me a story that went like this:

그러던 어느 날, 한 어르신이 이러한 이야기를 들려주셨습니다.

long time ago, there was a big war between tribes.

먼 옛날, 부족간에 큰 전쟁이 있었습니다.

This specific tribe was really afraid of this other Luhya tribe.

루이야족을 굉장히 두려워하던 한 부족이 있었습니다.

Every time, they sent scouts to make sure no one attacked them.

그들은 항상 정찰을 보내 공격의 낌새가 없는 지 확인하였습니다.

So one day, the scouts came running and told the villagers,

그러던 어느날, 정찰병들이 뛰어 들어와 마을주민에게 말했습니다.

"The enemies are coming. Only half an hour away, they'll be here."

"적군이 오고 있습니다. 30분안에 이곳에 도착할 겁니다"

So people scrambled, took their things and ready to go, move out.

사람들은 재빨리 움직여, 짐을 챙겨 움직이기 시작했습니다.

But there were two men:

그런데 두 남자가 있었습니다.

one man was blind, one man had no legs

한 사람은 장님이고, 한 사람은 날 때부터 다리가 없었습니다.

-- he was born like that.

The leader of the chiefs said, "No, sorry. We can't take you. You'll slow us down.

부족장은 "미안하네, 자네들을 데려가 피난을 느려지게 할 수는 없네.

We have to flee our women and children, we have to run."

여자들과 아이들을 피난시키려면 우리는 서둘러야만 하네." 라고 말했습니다.

And they were left behind, waiting to die.

그렇게 그들은 남겨져 죽음을 기다리게 되었습니다.

But these two people worked something out.

하지만 이 둘은 무언가를 생각해 내었습니다.

The blind man said, "Look, I'm a very strong man but I can't see."

장님이 말했습니다. "이보게, 나는 건장한 남자지만, 앞을 볼 수가 없어."

The man with no legs says, "I can see as far as the end of the world,

다리가 없는 남자가 말했습니다. "나는 세상의 끝까지 볼 수 있어,

but I can't save myself from a cat, or whatever animals."

하지만 고양이나 어떤 동물들로부터도 나를 지킬 수가 없어."

The blind man went down on his knees like this,

그래서 장님은 이런 식으로 무릎을 굽혀 앉았습니다.

and told the man with no legs to go over his back, and stood up.

그리고 다리가 없는 남자를 업고 일어났습니다.

The man on top can see, the blind man can walk.

위에 있는 남자는 볼 수 있었고, 장님은 걸을 수 있었습니다.

두 남자는 출발해, 마을주민들의 흔적을 따라가 그들을 찾았고,

These guys took off, followed the footsteps of the villagers

그들을 추월했습니다.

until they found and passed them.

So, this was told to me in a setup of elders.

이것이 어르신들이 제게 들려준 이야기입니다.

And it's a really poor area.

정말 가난한 지역입니다. 제가 의원으로 있는 북부케냐는

I represent Northern Kenya:

the most nomadic, remote areas you can even find.

여러분이 발견하실 수 있는 가장 유목적이고 고립된 지역입니다.

And that man told me, "So, here you are.

어르신이 말씀하셨습니다. "자, 자네는 여기에 있네,

You've got a good education from America, you have a good life in America;

미국에서 좋은 교육을 받았고,

미국에서 좋은 삶을 살고 있지. 우리를 위해서는 무엇을 해줄텐가?

what are you going to do for us?

We want you to be our eyes, we'll give you the legs.

자네가 우리의 눈이 되어주었으면 하네. 우리가 다리가 되주겠네.

We'll walk you, you lead us."

우리는 자네를 위해 걷겠네. 자네는 우릴 인도해주게."

The opportunity came. I was always thinking about that:

케냐의 사람들을 위해 무엇을 할 수 있을까라고 계속 고민하던 제게

"What can I do to help my people?

기회가 왔습니다.

Every time you go to an area where for 43 years of independence,

독립한 지 43년이나 되었지만, 우리는 여전히

we still don't have basic health facilities.

기본 의료 시설도 갖추지 못하고 있습니다.

A man has to be transported in a wheelbarrow 30 km for a hospital.

병원을 가려면 손수레에 타고 20, 30 킬로를 가야합니다.

깨끗한 식수도 없습니다.

No clean drinking water.

저는 "나는 나를 바쳐 일하겠다,

So I said, "I'm going to dedicate myself.

I'm leaving America.

미국을 떠나, 선거에 출마하겠다." 라고 말했습니다.

I'm going to run for office."

Last June, I moved from America,

그래서 작년 6월 미국을 떠나와, 7월의 선거에 출마했고 당선되었습니다.

ran in July election and won.

And I came for them,

저는 그들을 위해 이 곳에 왔습니다. 그것이 제 목적입니다.

and that's my goal.

Right now I have in place, for the last nine months,

a plan that in five years,

every nomad will have clean drinking water.

We're building dispensaries across that constituency.

I'm asking my friends from America to help

저는 미국의 친구들에게 의사와 간호사들을 데려올 수 있게

도와 달라고 요청하고 있습니다.

with bringing nurses or doctors to help us out.

I'm trying to improve infrastructure.

인프라를 개선하기 위해 노력하고 있습니다.

I'm using the knowledge I received from the United States

저는 미국에서 얻은 지식과 저의 지역사회에서 얻은 지식을 사용해

우리 지역을 발전시키려고 하고 있습니다.

and from my community

to move them forward.

우리의 문제를 스스로 해결하려고 노력하고 있습니다.

I'm trying to develop homegrown solutions to our issues

because people from outside can come and help us,

왜냐하면 우리는 외부에서 와서 도움을 주어도, 우리 스스로 노력하지 않으면

but if we don't help ourselves, there's nothing to do.

아무것도 해낼 수 없다는 것을 알고 있기 때문입니다.

My plan right now

그래서 저는 학생들을 다양한 분야로 내보내고 있습니다.

as I continue with introducing students to different fields --

some become doctors, some lawyers --

의사가 되기도 하고, 변호사가 되기도 합니다.

we want to produce a comprehensive group of people,

우리는 훗날 이곳으로 돌아와 지역사회를 돕고 발전시킬

students who can come back and help us see a community grow

유능한 인재와 학생들을 길러내고자 합니다.

that is in the middle of a huge economic recession.

지금과 같은 경제불황 속에서도 말입니다.

As I continue to be a Member of Parliament

그래서 저는 국회의원을 계속해나가며

and as I continue listening to all of you talking about botany,

여러분들이 목초지와 건강과 민주주의와 새로운 발명에 대해

health, democracy, new inventions,

말씀하시는 것에 계속 귀를 기울이겠습니다.

I'm hoping that one day in my own little community --

저는 희망합니다.

which is 26,000 square km,

언젠가는 26,000제곱킬로미터의,

maybe five times Rhode Island --

로드 아일랜드 주(州)의 5배나 되지만 도로 하나 없는 우리의 작은 사회가

with no roads,

we'll be able to become a model to help others develop.

다른 지역을 발전시키는 모델이 되기를 희망합니다.
