Joseph Lekuton: A parable for Kenya

My name is Joseph, a Member of Parliament in Kenya.

أسمي جوزيف، عضو في البرلمان في كينيا

Picture a Maasai village,

وممثل لقرية ماساي

and one evening,

وفي ذات أمسية، جاء جنود الحكومة، وحاصروا القرية

government soldiers come, surround the village

and ask each elder to bring one boy to school.

وطلبوا من كل عجوز أن تأتي بطفل الى المدرسة

That's how I went to school --

هكذا ذهبت الى المدرسة-ـ

pretty much a government guy pointing a gun

الى حد كبير بشخص من الحكومة يوجه مسدساً

and told my father, "You have to make a choice."

وأخبر والدي، "يجب عليك أن تختار."ـ

I walked very comfortably to this missionary school,

لذا ذهبت بكل راحة الى تلك المدرسة التبشيرية

that was run by an American missionary.

التي كان يديرها مبشرون أمريكيون

The first thing the American missionary gave me was a candy.

وأول شئ أعطاني اياه المبشر الأمريكي كان حلوى

I had never in my life ever tasted candy.

لم أذوق طعم الحلوى في حياتي

So I said to myself, with all these hundred other boys,

لذا قلت لنفسي، مع هؤلاء المئات من الأطفال

this is where I belong.

هنا حيث أنتمي. وبقيت-ـ

(Laughter) I stayed.

(ضحك)

When everybody else was dropping out.

-- عندما كان البقية ينقطعون

My family moved; we're nomads.

رحلت أسرتي. نحن رحالة

It was a boarding school, I was seven --

كل وقت تقفل المدرسة-- كانت مدرسة داخلية، وكنت في عمر السابعة-ـ

Every time it closed you had to travel to find them.

عليك التنقل حتى تجدهم

40-50 miles, it doesn't matter.

50 ميلاً، 40 ميلاً، لا يهم

You slept in the bush, but you kept going.

تنام في الأدغال، لكنك تواصل المسير

And I stayed. I don't know why, but I did.

وبقيت. لا أعرف لماذا بقيت، لكني بقيت

All of a sudden I passed the national examination,

found myself in a very beautiful high school in Kenya.

وجدت نفسي في مدرسة ثانوية غاية في الجمال في كينيا

And I finished high school.

وأنتهيت من المدرسة الثانوية. وذهبت، ووجدت الرجل

And just walking, I found a man

who gave me a full scholarship to the United States.

الذي أعطاني منحة كاملة للدراسة في الولايات المتحدة

My mother still lived in a cow-dung hut,

ما تزال والدتي تعيش في كوخ من روث البقر

none of my brothers were going to school,

لم يذهب أي من أخواني الى المدرسة

and this man told me, "Here, go."

وأخبرني ذلك الرجل ، "هاك، إذهب."ـ

I got a scholarship

to St. Lawrence University, Upstate New York;

finished that.

أنتهيت منها، بعد ذلك إلتحقت بالدراسات العليا في هارفارد

And after that I went to Harvard Graduate School;

finished that.

أنتهيت منها، بعدها عملت في دي سي قليلاً

Then I worked in DC a little bit:

I wrote a book for National Geographic and taught U.S. history.

كتبت كتاباً لناشونال جوغرافك، ودرّست التاريخ، تاريخ أمريكا

And every time, I kept going back home,

وظللت كل مرة أعود الى الديار

listening to their problems --

أستمع الى مشاكل هؤلاء الناس

sick people, people with no water, all this stuff --

الناس المرضى، الناس بدون ماء، كل الأشياء

every time I go back to America,

وكل مرة أرجع الى أمريكا، ظللت أفكّر فيهم

I kept thinking about them.

Then one day, an elder gave me a story that went like this:

بعدها في يوم، حكى لي عجوز حكاية، والحكاية كانت كالتالي

long time ago, there was a big war between tribes.

في قديم الزمان، عندما نشبت حرب عظيمة بين قبيلتين

This specific tribe was really afraid of this other Luhya tribe.

وكانت تلك القبيلة تحديداً خائفة حقيقةً من تلك القبيلة اللوهيا الأخرى

Every time, they sent scouts to make sure no one attacked them.

وكل مرة، يرسلون كشافة الى الخارج ليتأكدوا أنه لا أحد هاجمهم

So one day, the scouts came running and told the villagers,

اذاً في يوم، جاء الكشافة مسرعين، واخبروا القرويين

"The enemies are coming. Only half an hour away, they'll be here."

"الأعداء قادمون، على بعد نصف ساعة فقط -- سيكونوا هنا."ـ

So people scrambled, took their things and ready to go, move out.

لذا سارع الناس، أخذوا أغراضهم واستعدوا للذهاب، للخروج

But there were two men:

لكن كان هناك رجلين

one man was blind, one man had no legs

أحدهم كان أعمى، والآخر بدون رجلين-- منذ ولادته على هذا الحال

-- he was born like that.

The leader of the chiefs said, "No, sorry. We can't take you. You'll slow us down.

قال قائد المجموعة، " لا آسف، لا يمكننا أخذكم، ستبطأون مسيرنا

We have to flee our women and children, we have to run."

علينا إخلاء نسائنا وأطفالنا، يجب علينا الجري."ـ

And they were left behind, waiting to die.

وتم تركهم في الخلف، بإنتظار الموت

But these two people worked something out.

لكن هؤلاء الناس توصلوا لشئ

The blind man said, "Look, I'm a very strong man but I can't see."

قال الرجل الأعمى، " أسمع، أنا شخص قوي جداً، لكني لا أرى."ـ

The man with no legs says, "I can see as far as the end of the world,

الرجل بلا أرجل قال، " أستطيع رؤية حتى نهاية العالم

but I can't save myself from a cat, or whatever animals."

لكني لا أستطيع حماية نفسي حتى من قطة، أو أي شئ، حيوان."ـ

The blind man went down on his knees like this,

لذا جلس الرجل الأعمى على ركبتيه، الى الأسفل مثل هذا

and told the man with no legs to go over his back, and stood up.

وأخبر الرجل بلا رجلين بأن يصعد على ظهره، ووقف

The man on top can see, the blind man can walk.

الرجل في الأعلى يستطيع الرؤية، الرجل الأعمى يستطيع المشي

وغادر هؤلاء الرجال، متتبعين آثار أقدام القرويين

These guys took off, followed the footsteps of the villagers

حتى عثروا عليهم وتخطوهم

until they found and passed them.

So, this was told to me in a setup of elders.

اذا هذا ما قصوه علي في مجلس مشائخ

And it's a really poor area.

وهي منطقة فقيرة حقاً، أنا أمثّل شمال كينيا-ـ

I represent Northern Kenya:

the most nomadic, remote areas you can even find.

معظم البدو والمناطق النائية ، حتى يمكنك العثور عليها

And that man told me, "So, here you are.

وأخبرني ذلك الرجل، "اذا ، أنت هنا

You've got a good education from America, you have a good life in America;

لديك تعليم جيد من أمريكا

لديك حياة جيدة في أمريكا، ما الذي ستفعله من اجلنا؟

what are you going to do for us?

We want you to be our eyes, we'll give you the legs.

نريدك أن تكون عيوننا، سنقدم لك الرجول

We'll walk you, you lead us."

سنمشي بك، أنت تقودنا."ـ

The opportunity came. I was always thinking about that:

اذا الفرصة جاءت، وكنت أفكر في ذلك

"What can I do to help my people?

ما الذي أفعله لأساعد أهلي؟

Every time you go to an area where for 43 years of independence,

كل وقت تذهب الى منطقة حيث لمدة 43 عام من الإستقلال

we still don't have basic health facilities.

ما نزال نفتقر لمستلزمات الصحة الأساسية

A man has to be transported in a wheelbarrow 30 km for a hospital.

يتعين نقل الشخص على عربة يدوية

الى 20، 30 كيلومتراً للمستشفى. لا توجد مياة للشرب

No clean drinking water.

لذا قلت، " سأقوم بتكريس نفسي

So I said, "I'm going to dedicate myself.

I'm leaving America.

سأغادر أمريكا. سأذهب للترشح للحكومة."ـ

I'm going to run for office."

Last June, I moved from America,

لذا في يوليو الماضي-- أنتقلت من أمريكا في يونيو، نزلت الإنتخابات في يوليو وفزت

ran in July election and won.

And I came for them,

وجئت من أجلهم. ذلك هو هدفي

and that's my goal.

Right now I have in place, for the last nine months,

والآن، وضعت طوال التسعة أشهر الماضية

a plan that in five years,

every nomad will have clean drinking water.

We're building dispensaries across that constituency.

I'm asking my friends from America to help

with bringing nurses or doctors to help us out.

I'm trying to improve infrastructure.

I'm using the knowledge I received from the United States

and from my community

to move them forward.

I'm trying to develop homegrown solutions to our issues

because people from outside can come and help us,

لأننا نعرف، نحن ندرك بأن الناس في الخارج يمكنهم المجيء ومساعدتنا

but if we don't help ourselves, there's nothing to do.

لكن إن لم نساعد أنفسنا، لا يمكننا فعل شئ

My plan right now

لذا فأن خطتي الآن، بينما أحاول تقديم الطلاب الى مختلف المجالات-ـ

as I continue with introducing students to different fields --

some become doctors, some lawyers --

يصبح بعضهم أطباء، بعضهم محامين-ـ

we want to produce a comprehensive group of people,

نريد إنتاج مجموعة شاملة من الناس، الطلاب

students who can come back and help us see a community grow

الذين يرجعون ويساعدونا في مراعاة المجتمع المتنامي

that is in the middle of a huge economic recession.

وسط كساد إقتصادي ضخم

As I continue to be a Member of Parliament

لذا بينما أواصل كعضو في البرلمان

and as I continue listening to all of you talking about botany,

وبينما أواصل الإستماع لكل أحاديثكم عن علم النبات

health, democracy, new inventions,

تتحدثون عن الصحة، تتحدثون عن الديموقراطية، تتحدثون عن الإبتكارات الجديدة

I'm hoping that one day in my own little community --

أتمنى أن في أحد الأيام، في مجتمعي الصغير -ـ

which is 26,000 square km,

البالغ حجمه 26000 كيلومتر مربع

maybe five times Rhode Island --

ربما خمسة أضعاف مساحة جزيرة رودي، بلا طرق-ـ

with no roads,

we'll be able to become a model to help others develop.

سنتمكن من أن نكون نموذج لمساعدة الآخرين ليتطوروا
