Whether it’s being chained to a burning wheel, turned into a spider,

Greek mythology is filled with stories of the gods

ئەفسانەی یۆنانی پڕە لە داستانی خواوەندەکان

inflicting gruesome horrors on mortals who angered them.

کە چەندین ئەشکەنجەی تۆقێنەریان سەپاندووە بەسەر ئەو مرۆڤانەی کە توڕەیان کردوون.

Yet one of their most famous punishments is not remembered

بەڵام، یەکێک لە بەناوبانگترین ئەشکەنجەکان بە ئەوە نایەتەوە یاد

for its outrageous cruelty, but for its disturbing familiarity.

Sisyphus was the first king of Ephyra, now known as Corinth.

سیزیف یەکەم پادشای ئیفریا بوو، کە ئێستا بە کۆرنیث ناسراوە.

Although a clever ruler who made his city prosperous, he was also a devious tyrant

who seduced his niece and killed visitors to show off his power.

This violation of the sacred hospitality tradition greatly angered the gods.

But Sisyphus may still have avoided punishment

بەڵام سیزیف لەوەبوو هێێشتا خۆی لە سزاکان لابدایە

if it hadn’t been for his reckless confidence.

گەر ئەو خۆبەزلزانیە بێباکانەیەی بەردەوام نەبوایە.

The trouble began when Zeus kidnapped the nymph Aegina,

کێشەکە بەوە دەستی پێکرد کە زووس ئایگینایی پەری دەریایی ڕفاند،

carrying her away in the form of a massive eagle.

و دووری خستەوە لە شێوەی هەڵۆیەکی قەبەدا.

Aegina’s father, the river god Asopus, pursued their trail to Ephyra,

باوکی ئەگینا، خوداوەندی ڕووبار ئەساپوس، ڕێکچەی ئەفیرای گرت،

where he encountered Sisyphus.

ئەو شوێنەی کە تووشی سیزیف بوو.

In exchange for the god making a spring inside the city,

لە بەرامبەری ئەوەی خوداکە تاڤگەیەک لە نێو شارەکەدا بئافرێنێت،

the king told Asopus which way Zeus had taken the girl.

سەرکردەکە بە ئەساپوسی گووت کە بە کام ڕێگە زووس کچەکەی ڕفاند.

When Zeus found out, he was so furious that he ordered Thanatos, or Death,

to chain Sisyphus in the underworld so he couldn’t cause any more problems.

But Sisyphus lived up to his crafty reputation.

بەڵام سیزیف بە تەڵەکەبازی گەورەبوو بوو.

As he was about to be imprisoned,

کاتێک خەریبوو زیندانی دەکرا،

the king asked Thanatos to show him how the chains worked

سیزیف داوای لە ثانتۆس کرد کە چۆن کۆتەکە بەکار دێت-

– and quickly bound him instead, before escaping back among the living.

و بەخێرایی لە ثانتۆسی ئاڵاند، بەر لەوەی ڕزگاری بێت لە مردن و بڕواتەوە ژیان.

With Thanatos trapped, no one could die, and the world was thrown into chaos.

بە بەستنەوەی ثانتۆس، کەس نەیدەتوانی بمرێت و دونیا بێسەروبەر بوو بوو.

Things only returned to normal when the god of war Ares,

شتەکان ئاسایی بوونەوە کاتێک خوداوەندی شەر ئارس،

upset that battles were no longer fun, freed Thanatos from his chains.

نیگەران بوو بەوەی جەنگەکان چیدی خۆش نەبوون بۆ ئەوەش ثانتۆسی ڕزگار کرد لە پێوەندەکانی.

Sisyphus knew his reckoning was at hand.

سیزیف دەیزانی کە سزاکەی بەڕێوەیە.

But he had another trick up his sleeve.

بەڵام فێڵێکی دیکەی بە دەستەوە بوو.

Before dying, he asked his wife Merope to throw his body in the public square,

پێش مردن، داوای لە ژنەکەی میورۆپی کرد کە لاشەی لە بینایەکی گشتی هەڵداتە خوارەوە،

from where it eventually washed up on the shores of the river Styx.

لە شوێنێکەوە کە لە کۆتاییدا بشۆردرێت لە قەراغاوی ڕووباری ستیکس.

Now back among the dead, Sisyphus approached Persephone,

هەرچەندە ئێستا مرد بوو، لە پێرسفۆنی نزیک بووەوە،

queen of the Underworld, and complained

شاژنی دوونیایی بنەوە، و گلەیی لەوە هەبوو

that his wife had disrespected him by not giving him a proper burial.

کە ژنەکەی بێڕێزی پێکردووە بەوەی بە شێوازێکی شیاو بەڕێی نەکردووە.

Persephone granted him permission to go back to the land of living

پێرسیفۆنی مۆڵەتی ڕۆشتنەوە بۆ خاکی زیندوانی پێبەخشی

and punish Merope, on the condition that he would return when he was done.

و سزای میرۆپی ژنی بدات، و لە حاڵەتێکدا بگەڕێتەوە کە سزادانەکە تەواوبووە.

Of course, Sisyphus refused to keep his promise,

بێگومان، سیزیف پابەندی بەڵێنەکەی نەبوو،

now having twice escaped death by tricking the gods.

ئەمە دووەم جاری بوو لە مردن ڕزگاری ببێت بە فێڵ کردن لە خوداکان.

There wouldn’t be a third time,

جاری سێەم نابێت.

as the messenger Hermes dragged Sisyphus back to Hades.

The king had thought he was more clever than the gods,

پاشاکە پێی وابوو کە سیزیف زیرەکترە لە خوداکان،

but Zeus would have the last laugh.

Sisyphus’s punishment was a straightforward task

سزاکەی سیزیف بریتی بوو لە ئەرکێکی ڕاست و ڕوون

– rolling a massive boulder up a hill.

--سووڕانەوەی گابەردێک بۆ سەرەوەی گردێک.

But just as he approached the top, the rock would roll all the way back down,

بەڵام هەر کە دەگەیشتە ترۆپکەکە، گابەردەکە غڵۆر دەبۆوە بۆ شوێنی خۆی،

forcing him to start over

وای لێ دەکرد دووبارە دەست پێ بکاتەوە،

…and over, and over, for all eternity.

و دووبارە، ودووبارە، بۆ هەتاهەتایی.

Historians have suggested that the tale of Sisyphus may stem from ancient myths

مێژووناسەکان پێمان دەڵێن کە ڕەنگە چیرۆکی سیزیف لە ئەفسانە دێرینەکانەوە سەرچاوە بگرێت

about the rising and setting sun, or other natural cycles.

دەربارەی هەڵاتن و ئاوابوونی خۆر، یان سووڕە سرووشتییەکانی دیکە.

But the vivid image of someone condemned to endlessly repeat a futile task

بەڵام ئەم وێنە روونە کە سزادانی کەسێکە بە کردنی ئەرکێکی بەردەوامی بێ کەڵک

has resonated as an allegory about the human condition.

ڕەنگدانەوەی ‌هێمایی بارودۆخی مرۆڤە.

In his classic essay The Myth of Sisyphus,

لە ڕۆمانە کلاسیکیەکەیدا، ئەفسانی سیزیف

existentialist philosopher Albert Camus compared the punishment

فەیلەسوفی بوونگەرا ئەلبێرت کامۆ، سزاکەی بەراورد کردووە

to humanity’s futile search for meaning and truth

بە گەڕانە بێکەڵکە لە مێژینەکەی مرۆڤ بۆ ڕاستی

in a meaningless and indifferent universe.

لە گەردوونێکی کەم مانا و کەم تەرخەمدا.

Instead of despairing, Camus imagined Sisyphus defiantly meeting his fate

لە جێی نائومێدب وون، کامۆ پێی وایە سیزیف بە توندی ڕووبەرووی چارەنووسەکەی دەبێتەوە

as he walks down the hill to begin rolling the rock again.

کە لە گردەکە دێتەوە خوارەوە بۆ ئەوەی دوو- بارە دەست بە سوڕاندنەوەی بەردەکە بکاتەوە.

And even if the daily struggles of our lives

تەنانەت ئەگەر هەوڵەکانی رۆژانەی ژیانمان

sometimes seem equally repetitive and absurd,

هەندێک کات زۆر چوونیەک و پڕووپوچن،

we still give them significance and value by embracing them as our own.

هێشتا بایەخ و بەهایان پێ دەدەین بە گرتنە باوەشیان وەک بڵێی هی خۆمان بن.
