You believe that the Sun is much larger than the Earth,

بروات وایە کە خۆر زۆر گەورەترە لە زەوی،

that the Earth is a roughly spherical planet

زەوی بە رادەیەکی زۆر ھەسارەیەکی بازنەییە

that rotates on its axis every 24 hours

کە بە دەوری خۆیدا دەسورێتەوە ھەموو ٢٤ کاتژمێرێک

and it revolves around the Sun once every 365 days.

You believe that you were born on a particular date,

that you were born to two human parents

was born on an earlier date.

You believe that other human beings

have thoughts and feelings like you do

کە ھەست و بیریان ھەیە وەک تۆ

and that you are not surrounded by humanoid robots.

و تۆ دەورە نەدراویت بە رۆبۆتەکان.

You believe all of these things and many more,

بروات بەم شتانەو و زۆری تر ھەیە،

not on the basis of direct observation,

نەک لەسەر بنەمای چاودێری ڕاستەوخۆ،

which can't, by itself, tell you very much

کە ناکرێت بەتانیا زۆر شتت بۆ روون کاتەوە

about the relative size and motion

دەربارەی قەبارەی زانیارییەکان و جوڵە

of the Sun and the Earth,

لەسەر زەوی و خۆر،

or about your own family history,

یان دەربارەی مێژووی خێزانەکەت،

or about what goes on in the minds of other humans.

یان دەربارەی ئەوەی چی لە مێشکی کەسانی کەدایە.

Instead, these beliefs are mostly based on

لە جیاتی ئەوە، ئەم بیرورایانە بەستراون

what you've been told.

بەوەی چیت لێ وتراوە.

Without spoken and written testimonies,

بێ ئەوەی قسەو نووسراوی پێ بنووسرێت،

human beings could not pass on knowledge

مرۆڤایەتی ناتوانێ لەسەر زانیاری دەربازی بێت

from one person to another,

لە کەسێکەوە بە ئەوەی تر،

let alone from one generation to another.

لە نەوەیەکەوە بۆ ئەوەی تر.

We would know much, much less

زۆر کەمتر دەزانین

about the world around us.

دەربارەی ئەم جیھانەی دەوروبەرمان.

So learning about a topic

کەوایە فێربوون لەسەر بابەتەکە

by asking an expert on that topic,

بە لرسیارکردن لە لسپۆرێکی ئەو بابەتە

or appealing to authority,

یان گەرانەوە بۆ دەسەڵات،

helps us gain knowledge,

گارمەتیمان دەدات زانییاری بەدەست بێنین،

but, it doesn't always.

بەڵام، ھەمووکاتێک نا.

Even the most highly respected authorities

تەنانەت بەرزترین دەسەلاتدارانیش

can turn out to be wrong.

دەکرێت ھەلە بن.

Occasionally this happens

جار جار روودەدات

because a highly respected authority is dishonest

لەبەر ئەوەی دەسەڵاتدارە باڵاکان راستگۆ نین

and claims to know something

و دەڵێن کە شتێک دەزانن

that she or he really doesn't know.

کە لەراستییدا نایزانن.

Sometimes it happens just because they make a mistake.

ھەندێک جار روودەدات کاتێک ھەڵەیەک دەکەن.

They think they know when they don't know.

وادەزانن دەزانن کە نایزانن.

For example, a number of respected economists

بۆ نمونە، ژمارەییەک لە ژمێریارە باەرێزەکان

did not expect the financial collapse of 2008.

چاوەڕوانی ئەو داڕمانە ئابووریەیان نەدەکرد لە ساڵی ٢٠٠٨،

They turned out to be wrong.

دەرکەوت ھەڵە بوون.

Maybe they were wrong

لەوانەیە ھەڵەبوبن چونکە زیاد لە پێویست سەیری ھەندێک بەڵگەیان کرد.

because they were overlooking some important evidence.

Maybe they were wrong because they were misinterpreting

لەوانەیە هەڵە بوبن چونکە لێکدانەوەی هەڵەیان دەکرد

some of the evidence they had noticed.

لەسەر ھەندێکبەڵگە کە تێبینیان کرد.

Or maybe they were wrong

یان لەوەیە ھەڵە بوبن لەبەر ئەوەی کەمتەرخەمبوون

simply because they were reasoning carelessly

from the total body of their evidence.

لەسەر ئەو بەڵگەناەی لەبەر دەستیان بوو.

But whatever the reason,

بەڵام ھەرچییەک بێت ھۆکارەکە، دەرکەوت کە ھەڵەن

they turned out to be wrong

and many people who trusted their authority

و ئەوانەی متمانەیان بە دەسەڵاتیان ھەبوو

ended up losing lots of money,

زەرەزێکی زۆریان کرد،

losing lots of other people's money,

لەدەستدانی برێکی زۆری پارەی ئەوانی کە،

on account of that misplaced trust.

رێژەیەک کە وایکرد متمانە لەدەست بدەن.

So while appealing to authority

بۆیە لە کاتی گەڕانەوە بۆ دەسەڵات

can sometimes provide us with valuable knowledge,

دەکرێت ھەندێک جار زانیاری گرینگمان پێ بدات،

it also can sometimes be the cause

و دەکرێ ھە دێک خر ھۆکار بێت

of monumental errors.

بۆ ھەڵەیەکی زۆر.

It's important to all of us to be able to distinguish

زۆر گرینگە بۆ ھەموومان بە بتوانین جیاوازی بکەین

those occasions on which we can safely and reasonably trust authority

لەو حاڵەتانەی دەتوانین بە پارێزراوی متمانە بە دەسەڵات بکەین

from those occasions on which we can't.

و لەو حاڵەتانەی ناتوانین.

But how do we do that?

بەڵام چۆن ئەوە بکەین؟

In order to do that,

بۆ ئەوەی ئەمە بکەین،

nothing is more useful than

ھیچ شتێک لەوە بەسوود تر نیە

an authority's track record on a particular topic.

لە ریکۆردی دەسەڵات لەسەر بابەتێکی دیاریکراو.

If someone turns out to perform well

ئەگەر کەسێک بە باشی رۆلی گێرا

in a given situation much of the time,

لە حەلەتێکی دیاریکراو زۆربەی کاتەکان،

then it's likely that he or she will continue

ئەوا پێدەچێت بەردەوام بێت

to perform well in that same situation,

کە بە باشی رۆل بگێرێت لە ھەمان حەڵەتدا،

at least in the near term.

ھەرچ نەبێ لە بابەتی ھاوشێوە.

And this generalization holds true

و ئەم گشتگیرکردنە راستە

of the testimony of authorities as much as of anything else.

بۆ شایەتیدانی دەسەڵاتداران زیاتر لە ھەر شتێکی کە.

If someone can consistently pick winners

ئەگەر کەسێک بە بەردەوامی براوەکانی ھەلبژارد

in both politics and baseball,

لە سیاسەت و بەیسبۆل،

then we should probably trust him or her

ئەوە دەتوانین متمانەی لێ بکەین

to keep on picking winners in both politics or baseball,

بۆ بەردەوام بوون لە ھەلبژاردنی براوەکان لە سیاسەت و بەیسبۆڵ،

though maybe not in other things

لەوانەیە لە مەسەلەکانی کە نا

where his or her track record may be less stellar.

کە تۆمارەکە کەمتر درەوشاوە و ئاشکرا بێت.

If other forecasters have a poorer track record

و پەخشەرانی دیکەی ھەواڵ کەمتر ریکۆردیان ھەیە

on those same two topics,

لەسەر ھەمان دوو بابەت،

then we shouldn't trust them as much.

پێویستە کەمتر متمانەیان پێ بکەین.

So whenever you're considering whether

ھەر کەی رەچاوی بارودۆخمان کرد کە

to trust the testimony of some authority,

کە متمانە بە شایەتدانی ھەندێک دەسەڵاتدار بکەین،

the first question to ask yourself is,

یەکەم لرسیار کە لە خۆتی بکەیت ئەوەیە،

"What's their track record on this topic?"

ریکۆردەکە چییە لەسەر بابەتەکە؟

And notice that you can apply

و تێبینی بکە دەتوانی ھەمان

the very same lesson to yourself.

وانە بۆخۆت بەکاربێنی.

Your instincts tell you that you've just met Mr. Right,

ھەستێکی ناوەوەت لێت دەڵێت کە بەرێز رایتت بینیوە،

but what sort of track record do your instincts have

بەڵام چ جۆرە تراکێکی ھەیە

on topics like this one?

یان بابەتێکی وەک ئەمە؟

Have your instincts proven themselves

ئایا غەریزەکەت خۆی سەلماندووە

to be worthy of your trust?

کە شایەنی متمانەیە؟

Just as we judge other people's testimony

ھەروەک برڕیاردەدەین بە شایەتی کەسانی کە

by their track record,

بە ریکۆردەکانیان،

so, too, we can judge our own instincts

کەوایە تۆش، دەتوانیت حوکمی غەریزەکانت بکەی،

by their track record.

بە ریکۆردەکانیان.

و ئەمە ھەنگاوێک نزیکترمان دەکاتەوە

And this brings us one step closer

to an objective view of ourselves

بۆ بیرورایەکی بێلایەنانە دەربارەی خۆمان

and our relation to the world around us.
