Throughout the history of mankind,

بە درێژایی مێژووی مرۆڤ،

three little words have sent poets to the blank page,

ئەو سێ وشە بچووکە شاعیرانی گەیاندیتە سەر پەڕێکی بەتاڵ،

philosophers to the Agora,

فەیلەسوفەکان بۆ ئەگۆڕا،

and seekers to the oracles:

و دۆزەرەوان بۆ ئۆرکۆلیس:

"Who am I?"

“من کێم؟”

From the ancient Greek aphorism inscribed on the Temple of Apollo,

لە یۆنانی کۆنەوە کە لەسەر پەرستگای ئەپۆلۆ دانراوە.

"Know thyself,"

“خۆت بناسە،”

to The Who's rock anthem, "Who Are You?"

بۆ سروودی ڕۆک، “تۆ کێیت؟“.

philosophers, psychologists, academics,

فەیلەسوف، دەروونناسان، ئەکادیمیەکان،

scientists, artists, theologians and politicians

زانایان، هەنەرمەندان، پۆلەتیک و ئاینناسان

have all tackled the subject of identity.

هەموویان بابەتی ناسنامەیان چارەسەر کردووە.

Their hypotheses are widely varied and lack significant consensus.

گریمانەکانیان بە شێوەیەک فراوان هەمەجۆرە و ئەنفال کۆدەنگییەکی ئەوتۆی نییە.

These are smart, creative people,

ئەوان خەڵکی زیرەک، داهێنەرن،

so what's so hard about coming up with the right answer?

کەواتە بۆ چی گرانە بۆ دۆزینەوەی وەڵامێکی ڕاست؟

One challenge certainly lies

یەک بەرەنگاری بە دڵنیایەوە دەگرێتەوە

with the complex concept of the persistence of identity.

لەگەڵ چەمکی ئاڵۆز لە بەردەوامی ناسنامە.

Which you is who?

کامایان تۆیت؟

The person you are today?

ئەو کەسەی کە هەیت ئەمڕۆ؟

Five years ago?

پێنج ساڵ پێش ئێستا؟

Who you'll be in 50 years?

کێیت ٥٠ ساڵ دواتر؟

And when is "am"?

و کەی “منم“؟

This week?

ئەم هەفتەیە؟

Today?

ئەمڕۆ؟

ئەم کاتە؟

This hour?

This second?

ئەم چرکەیە؟

And which aspect of you is "I"?

و کامە بەشی تۆ “منە“؟

Are you your physical body?

ئایا تۆ جەستەیە خۆتی؟

Your thoughts and feelings?

هەستەکانت و بیرەوەرەکانت؟

Your actions?

کردارەکانت؟

These murky waters of abstract logic are tricky to navigate,

ئەم ئاوە لۆژیکییە فێڵاوییە بۆ گەشت کردن،

and so it's probably fitting that to demonstrate the complexity,

و کەواتە گونجاوترە بۆ دەرکردنی ئاڵۆزییەکە،

the Greek historian Plutarch used the story of a ship.

مێژووی یۆنانییە پلوتارک چیرۆکی کەشتییەکەی بەکار هێنا.

How are you "I"?

چۆن تۆ “منی“؟

As the tale goes, Theseus, the mythical founder King of Athens,

هەروەکو چیرۆکەکە دەڕوات، سیسۆس، پاشای ئەسینسی ئەفسانەیی،

single-handedly slayed the evil Minotaur at Crete,

ڕووبوڕوو مینۆتاور لە کریت کوشت،

then returned home on a ship.

To honor this heroic feat,

بۆ ڕێزگرتن لەم جەژنە قارەمانە،

for 1000 years Athenians painstakingly maintained his ship in the harbor,

بۆ هەزار ساڵ ئەسیسنس بە ئازارانە توانایان کەشتییەکە بهێلنەوە،

and annually reenacted his voyage.

ساڵانە کەشتەکەی دووبارە دروست کردووە.

Whenever a part of the ship was worn or damaged,

هەرکاتێک بەشیک لە کەشتییەکە خراپ بووبا،

it was replaced with an identical piece of the same material

دەگۆردراوە بە هاوەشێوەکەی لەهەمان جۆر

until, at some point, no original parts remained.

Plutarch noted the Ship of Theseus

پلوتارک کەشتی سیسی بینی

was an example of the philosophical paradox

وەکو نموونەیەک لە پارادۆکسی نموونەیی

revolving around the persistence of identity.

بە خوولانەوە بە دەوروبەری بەردەوامی ناسنامە.

How can every single part of something be replaced,

چۆن دەتوانیت هەر بەشێک لە شتیک بگۆڕیتەوە،

yet it still remains the same thing?

بەڵلام هەر وەکی خۆی دەمینێتەوە؟

Let's imagine there are two ships:

بە خەیاڵ بکەین کە دوو کەشتی هەیە:

the ship that Theseus docked in Athens, Ship A,

ئەو کەشتییەی کە سیسۆس لەنگەردانی دا لە ئەسینس، کەستی یەکەم،

and the ship sailed by the Athenians 1000 years later, Ship B.

و ئەو کەشتییەی کە لەلیەن ئەسینس لێخورا هەزار سال دواتر، کەشتی دووەم.

Very simply, our question is this: does A equal B?

زۆر بەسادەییەوە، پرسایەکەمان ئەوەیە: ئایا کەستی یەکەم یەکسانە بە کەشتی دووەم؟

Some would say that for 1000 years there has been only one Ship of Theseus,

هەندێک دەڵێن بۆ ماوەی 1000 ساڵ تەنها یەک کەشتی لەمیوس هەیە،

and because the changes made to it happened gradually,

چونکە ئەو گۆڕانکاریانەی لەسەری کراوە وردە وردە ڕووی داوه‌،

it never at any point in time stopped being the legendary ship.

Though they have absolutely no parts in common,

the two ships are numerically identical, meaning one and the same,

دوو کەشتیەکە بە شێوەی ژمارەیین واتە یەک و وه‌ هه‌مانشت،

so A equals B.

ئه‌ی یه‌كسانه‌ به‌ بی.

However, others could argue that Theseus never set foot on Ship B,

هەرچۆنێ بێت، ئەوانی تر توانیان مشتومڕ بکەن کە تێسیوی هەرگیز پێی نەنایە سەر كه‌شتی بی،

and his presence on the ship is an essential qualitative property

ئامادەبوونی لەسەر کەشتییەکە تایبەتمەندیەکی گرنگی هه‌یه‌

of the Ship of Theseus.

له‌ ه‌شتیه‌كه‌ی تیسیوس.

It cannot survive without him.

بەبێ ئەو ناتوانێت بژیت.

So, though the two ships are numerically identical,

کەواتە، هەرچەندە دوو کەشتییەکە بە شێوەی ژمارەیین،

they are not qualitatively identical.

ئەوان لە ڕووی کوالێتییەوە یەک نین.

Thus, A does not equal B.

به‌مشێوه‌یه‌، ئه‌ی یه‌كسان نیه‌ به‌ بی.

But what happens when we consider this twist?

بەڵام چی ڕوودەدات کاتێک ئێمە به‌پێچانەوە لەبەرچاوی دەگرین؟

What if, as each piece of the original ship was cast off,

چی ئەگەر، وەک هەر پارچەیەک له‌ کەشتییە ڕەسەنەکە کوژاوەتەوە،

somebody collected them all, and rebuilt the entire original ship?

کەسێک هەموویانی کۆکردەوە و تەواوی کەشتییە ڕەسەنەکەی دووبارە بنیات نایەوە؟

When it was finished, undeniably two physical ships would exist:

كه‌تەواوبوو، بەشێوەیەکی حاشاهه‌ڵنه‌گرانه‌ دوو کەشتی فیزیایی بوونیان هەیە:

the one that's docked in Athens,

ئەوەی کە لە ئەسینا داینا،

and the one in some guy's backyard.

ئەو کەسەی کە لە حەوشەی پیاوێكدایه‌.

Each could lay claim to the title, "The Ship of Theseus,"

هەریەکەیان دەتوانێ بانگەشەی ناونیشانەکە بکات، “کەشتیی ئەمیسۆس،”

but only would could actually be the real thing.

بەڵام تەنها لەوانەیە لە راستیدا ئەوە شتێکی ڕاستەقینە بێت.

So which one is it,

ئێسته‌ كامه‌یانه‌،

and more importantly, what does this have to do with you?

لە هەمووی گرنگتر ئەمە چیت هەیە لەگەڵ تۆ؟

Like the Ship of Theseus,

وه‌كو كه‌شتیه‌كه‌ی تسیسوس،

you are a collection of constantly changing parts:

تۆ کۆکراوەی بەردەوامی به‌شه‌ گۆڕاوه‌كانین:

your physical body, mind, emotions, circumstances, and even your quirks,

جەستەت، مێشکت، هەستەکانت، وە تەنانەت لە ناو ماڵاتەکانیشت،

always changing, but still in an amazing and sometimes illogical way,

هەمیشە دەگۆڕێن، بەڵام هێشتا به‌ ڕێگه‌یه‌كی سه‌رسوڕهێنه‌رانه‌،

you stay the same, too.

تۆش بەهەمان شێوە بمێنیتەوە.

This is one of the reasons that the question, "Who am I?" is so complex.

ئەمە یەکێکە لەو هۆکارانەی کە پرسیاری، “من کێم؟” زۆر ئاڵۆزە.

And in order to answer it,

بۆ وه‌ڵامدانه‌وه‌شی،

like so many great minds before you,

وەک زۆربیرۆكه‌ی گەورەتر پێش تۆ،

you must be willing to dive into the bottomless ocean of philosophical paradox.

تۆ دەبێت ئامادە بیت بۆ چونە ناو ئۆقیانووسی پارادۆکسی فەلسەفی.

Or maybe you could just answer,

یان لەوانەیە بتوانیت وەڵام بدەیتەوە،

"I am a legendary hero sailing a powerful ship on an epic journey."

“من پاڵەوانێکی ئەفسانەیی گەشتم کەشتییەکی بەهێز لە گەشتێکی داستانیی”

That could work, too.

ئەوە لەوانەیە باش بێت.
