So recently,

some white guys and some black women

突然，白人男士發現

swapped Twitter avatars, or pictures online.

佢哋不斷被人用歧視黑人嘅字眼稱呼自己

They didn't change their content,

亦受到嚴重嘅網絡欺凌

they kept tweeting the same as usual,

反而，嗰幾個黑人女士突然間

but suddenly, the white guys noticed

發現網上世界對佢哋嚟講變得好咗

they were getting called the n-word all the time

and they were getting the worst kind of online abuse,

whereas the black women all of a sudden

noticed things got a lot more pleasant for them.

Now, if you're my five-year-old,

your Internet consists mostly of puppies and fairies

可以係一個好醜陋嘅地方

and occasionally fairies riding puppies.

That's a thing. Google it.

民主有健康嘅發展而產生嘅精彩辯論

But the rest of us know that the Internet

而係講緊惡意嘅人身攻擊

can be a really ugly place.

I'm not talking about the kind of colorful debates

可能曾經發生過喺你身上，但至少

發生嘅機會會多兩倍，或者更衰

that I think are healthy for our democracy.

I'm talking about nasty personal attacks.

Maybe it's happened to you, but it's at least

Which, incidentally, is only a third correct.

但問題係究竟你願唔願意去

I mean, lies! (Laughter)

犧牲個人利益去改變佢

唔係要放棄上網

But seriously, we all say we hate this crap.

而係改變你㩒嘢嘅習慣

The question is whether you're willing to make

因為㩒嘢係一種公眾行為

a personal sacrifice to change it.

唔再係

I don't mean giving up the Internet.

幾個有權有勢嘅精英去掌控所有媒體

I mean changing the way you click,

而我哋只係默默地接受資訊嘅一方

because clicking is a public act.

當網絡越嚟越普及，我哋就係個傳播媒介

It's no longer the case

我以前成日會諗，我著得好靚

that a few powerful elites control all the media

and the rest of us are just passive receivers.

上電視講下單新聞

Increasingly, we're all the media.

呢個就係傳播新聞嘅公眾行為

I used to think, oh, okay, I get dressed up,

然後我返到屋企上網

I put on a lot of makeup,

睇Twitter

I go on television, I talk about the news.

呢啲就係接受媒體資訊嘅私人行為

That is a public act of making media.

咁當然，我係著住睡衣嘅。 以為咁樣就係私人行為？

And then I go home and I browse the web

所有我哋寫嘅文章、喺Twitter發佈嘅推文

and I'm reading Twitter,

and that's a private act of consuming media.

以及所有我哋㩒嘅嘢

I mean, of course it is. I'm in my pajamas.

都係製作媒體嘅公眾行為

Wrong.

Everything we blog, everything we Tweet,

我哋係新手嘅編輯

and everything we click

我哋會去追蹤一啲

會吸引我哋嘅事

is a public act of making media.

而家嘅媒體係咁樣運作

亦都係由隱藏嘅演算法去決定

We are the new editors.

We decide what gets attention

你同我哋會睇到啲咩多啲

based on what we give our attention to.

根據我哋㩒啲咩

就係咁樣形成咗我哋個上網文化

That's how the media works now.

There's all these hidden algorithms that decide

what you see more of and what we all see more of

有五分之三嘅美國人認為

我哋個國家現正面對緊啲好嚴重嘅無禮行為

based on what you click on,

and that in turn shapes our whole culture.

但我又咁估計，至少五分之三嘅美國人

Over three out of five Americans think we have

㩒咗嗰啲會激嬲自己嘅網站、

a major incivility problem in our country right now,

散佈謠言，以滿足

but I'm going to guess that at least three out of five

我哋社會最邪惡嘅衝動

Americans are clicking on the same insult-oriented,

喺一個充斥人身攻擊嘅媒體環境

rumor-mongering trash that feeds

大家都好有動機去製造話題

the nastiest impulses in our society.

無禮貌嘅行為可以打橫行

In an increasingly noisy media landscape,

助長咗社會上嘅惡意中傷

the incentive is to make more noise to be heard,

其實唔一定係咁樣

and that tyranny of the loud

唔一定要㗎

我哋可以改變呢種動機

encourages the tyranny of the nasty.

首先，我哋有兩樣嘢可以做

It does not have to be that way.

第一，當有人受傷嗰陣唔好淨係企喺側邊

It does not.

We can change the incentive.

如果有人遇到網絡欺凌，請你做啲嘢

For starters, there are two things we can all do.

做個英雄，呢個就係你嘅機會

First, don't just stand by the sidelines when you see someone getting hurt.

為對方發聲，挺身而出，做個好人

If someone is being abused online, do something.

用正面態度去沖走啲負面行為

第二，我哋必須停止再㩒開

Be a hero. This is your chance.

特別係大多數人都睇緊，又冇乜價值嘅

Speak up. Speak out. Be a good person.

Drown out the negative with the positive.

I mean, really, same example:

if you don't like politicians calling each other names,

stop clicking on the stories

我哋成個文化會被燒光

about what one guy in one party called the other guy in the other party.

Clicking on a train wreck just pours gasoline on it.

如果咁樣做係會令大部分嘅點擊率會贏

It makes it worse, the fire spreads.

咁我哋應該要塑造我哋想要嘅世界

Our whole culture gets burned.

發揮我哋㩒嘢嘅力量

If what gets the most clicks wins,

因為呢個係一個公眾行為

then we have to start shaping the world we want
