I'm an artist.

Being an artist is the greatest job there is.

But being an artist is also a daunting job.

I spend every day, from nine to six, doing this.

I even started a side career that consists entirely

But today, I don't want to talk about what makes my life difficult.

I want to talk about what makes it easy.

and the fact that you are fluent in a language

You're fluent in the language of reading images.

Deciphering an image like that

takes quite a bit of an intellectual effort.

But nobody ever taught you how this works,

What makes a language powerful is that you can take a very complex idea

and communicate it in a very simple, efficient form.

These images represent exactly the same ideas.

But when you look, for example, at the college hat,

you know that this doesn't represent the accessory you wear on your head

Now, what drawings can do is they cannot only communicate images,

they can even evoke emotions.

Let's say you get to an unfamiliar place and you see this.

But visuals, they're of course more than just graphic icons.

You know, if I want to tell the story of modern-day struggle,

I would start with the armrest between two airplane seats

that, you know, you have 30 seconds to fight it out

If I want to illustrate the idea of discomfort,

They're designed to make you more comfortable --

So I never sleep on airplanes.

What I do occasionally is I fall into a sort of painful coma.

The thing is, you know, I love sleeping.

And when I sleep, I really prefer to do it while spooning.

I've been spooning on almost a pro level for close to 20 years,

but in all this time, I've never figured out

the only thing that makes sleeping even more complicated

than trying to do it on an airplane

They show up at your bed at around 4am

with some bogus excuse of, "I had a bad dream."

And then, of course you feel sorry for them, they're your kids,

so you let them into your bed.

We like to call this the helicopter mode.

Now, the deeper something is etched into your consciousness,

the fewer details we need to have an emotional reaction.

So why does an image like this work?

ဒီတော့ ဒီလိုရုပ်ပုံက ဘာလို့အလုပ်ဖြစ်လဲ။

It works, because we as readers

အလုပ်ဖြစ်တာက ကျုပ်တို့စာဖတ်သူတွေဟာ

are incredibly good at filling in the blanks.

ဒီကွက်လပ်တွေဖြည့်ရာမှာ မယုံနိုင်အောင် တော်လို့ပါ။

Now, when you draw, there's this concept of negative space.

ကဲ ခင်ဗျား ဆွဲတဲ့အခါ အနုတ်သဘော နေရာလပ်ရဲ့ ဒီအယူအဆ တစ်ခုရှိတယ်။

And the idea is, that instead of drawing the actual object,

ဒီစိတ်ကူးက တကယ့်ရုပ်ဝတ္ထုကို ဆွဲတာထက်

you draw the space around it.

ဒီတစ်ဝိုက်က နေရာလပ်ကို ခင်ဗျားဆွဲတယ်။

So the bowls in this drawing are empty.

But the black ink prompts your brain to project food into a void.

What we see here is not a owl flying.

What we actually see is a pair of AA batteries

standing on a nonsensical drawing,

and I animate the scene by moving my desk lamp up and down.

The image really only exists in your mind.

So, how much information do we need to trigger such an image?

My goal as an artist is to use the smallest amount possible.

I try to achieve a level of simplicity

where, if you were to take away one more element,

And that's why my personal favorite tool as an artist is abstraction.

I've come up with this system which I call the abstract-o-meter,

and this is how it works.

So you take a symbol, any symbol, for example the heart and the arrow,

which most of us would read as the symbol for love,

and I'm an artist, so I can draw this

in any given degree of realism or abstraction.

Now, if I go too realistic on it, it just grosses everybody out.

If I go too far on the other side and do very abstract,

nobody has any idea what they're looking at.

So I have to find the perfect place on that scale,

in this case it's somewhere in the middle.

Now, once we have reduced an image to a more simple form,

all sorts of new connections become possible.

And that allows for totally new angles in storytelling.

And so, what I like to do is,

I like to take images from really remote cultural areas and bring them together.

Now, with more daring references --

But of course, I know that eventually things become so obscure

that I start losing some of you.

So as a designer, it's absolutely key to have a good understanding

of the visual and cultural vocabulary of your audience.

With this image here, a comment on the Olympics in Athens,

I assumed that the reader of the "New Yorker"

New Yorker ဖတ်သူဟာ ဂရိအနုပညာရဲ့

would have some rudimentary idea of Greek art.

If you don't, the image doesn't work.

But if you do, you might even appreciate the small detail,

like the beer-can pattern here on the bottom of the vase.

A recurring discussion I have with magazine editors,

who are usually word people,

is that their audience, you,

are much better at making radical leaps with images

than they're being given credit for.

And the only thing I find frustrating is that they often seem to push me

towards a small set of really tired visual clichés

and anything with dollar signs; that's always good.

I want to give you a piece of advice.

When is a visual cliché good or bad?

It's a fine line.

And it really depends on the story.

In 2011, during the earthquake and the tsunami in Japan,

၂၀၁၁ ခုနှစ်က ဂျပန်က ငလျင်နဲ့ ဆူနာမီအတွင်းမှာ

စာအုပ်အဖုံးတစ်ခုအကြောင်း ကျွန်တော်တွေးနေခဲ့တယ်

I was thinking of a cover.

And I went through the classic symbols:

ရှေးမူမပျက်တဲ့ သင်္ကေတတွေကို မွှေနောက်ရှာနေတယ်၊

the Japanese flag,

ဂျပန် အလံပေါ့။

"The Great Wave" by Hokusai, one of the greatest drawings ever.

Hokusai ရဲ့ "The Great Wave" ဟာ အကြီးကျယ်ဆုံးပုံတွေထဲက တစ်ပုံပါ။

And then the story changed

ဒီနောက်မှာတော့ ဇာတ်လမ်းပြောင်းသွားတယ်။

when the situation at the power plant in Fukushima got out of hand.

Fukushima က ဓာတ်အားပေးစက်ရုံ အခြေအနေ ထိန်းမနိုင်သိမ်းမရဖြစ်တဲ့အခါပါ

And I remember these TV images of the workers in hazmat suits,

ဘေးမကင်းတဲ့ ဝတ်စုံတွေနဲ့ အလုပ်သမားတွေရဲ့ ဒီတီဗီရုပ်ပုံတွေကို ကျွန်တော်မှတ်မိတယ်၊

just walking through the site,

အခင်းဖြစ်ရာ ဖြတ်လျှောက်နေပြီး

and what struck me was how quiet and serene it was.

အဲဒါရဲ့ တိတ်ဆိတ်၊ အေးချမ်းနေပုံကို ကျွန်တော်ငြိသွားခဲ့တယ်။

And so I wanted to create an image of a silent catastrophe.

ဒါနဲ့ တိတ်ဆိတ်တဲ့ ကပ်ဘေးတစ်ခုရဲ့ ရုပ်ပုံတစ်ခုကို ဖန်တီးချင်ခဲ့တယ်။

And that's the image I came up with.

ဒါကတော့ စိတ်းကူးရလာတဲ့ ရုပ်ပုံပါ။

What I want to do is create an aha moment, for you, for the reader.

လုပ်ချင်တာက ခင်ဗျားတို့၊ စာဖတ်သူတွေအတွက် ဟောကနဲ့ဖြစ်တဲ့ တဒင်္ဂလေးတစ်ခုဖန်တီးဖို့ပါ။

And unfortunately, that does not mean

ကံဆိုးချင်တော့ ဒီပုံတွေကို ဖန်တီးစဉ်က

that I have an aha moment when I create these images.

ဟောကနဲကာလတစ်ခု ကျွန်တော့မှာ ရှိခဲ့တယ်လို့မဆိုလိုဘူး။

I never sit at my desk

ခေါင်းထဲမှာ ပေါက်ကွဲနေတဲ့

with the proverbial light bulb going off in my head.

ဟိုးဟိုးကျော် မီးလုံးနဲ့ တစ်ခါမှ စားပွဲမှာ ကျွန်တော်မထိုင်ဘူး။

What it takes is actually a very slow,

ဖြစ်သွားစေတာက တကယ့်ကို အင်မတန်နှေး၊

unsexy process of minimal design decisions

ဆွဲဆောင်မှုမရှိတဲ့ နည်းကျဉ်းတဲ့ ဒီဇိုင်းလုပ်ငန်းစဉ်ပါ။

that then, when I'm lucky, lead to a good idea.

နောက် ကံကောင်းတော့ စိတ်ကူးကောင်းတစ်ခုဖြစ်သွားတယ်။

So one day, I'm on a train, and I'm trying to decode

ဒါနဲ့တစ်ရက်မှာ ရထားပေါ်မှာ ပြတင်းပေါ်က ရေစက်တွေရဲ့

the graphic rules for drops on a window.

ဂရပ်ဖစ် စည်းမျဉ်းတွေကို ကြိုးစား အနက်ဖော်နေခဲ့တယ်။

And eventually I realize,

နောက်ဆုံး သဘောပေါက်မိတာက

"Oh, it's the background blurry upside-down,

"အိုး၊ ပြတ်သားတဲ့ ပုံတစ်ပုံမှာပါတဲ့ နောက်ခံက မှုန်ဝါးပြီး

contained in a sharp image."

ပြောင်းပြန်ကြီးဟ။"

And I thought, wow, that's really cool,

တွေးမိတာက အိုး၊ တယ်မိုက်ပါလားပေါ့၊

and I have absolutely no idea what to do with that.

ဒါနဲ့ ဘာလုပ်ရမှန်းတော့ လုံးဝမသိဘူးလေ။

A while later, I'm back in New York,

နောက်ခဏအကြာမှာ New York ကို ပြန်လာပြီး

and I draw this image of being stuck on the Brooklyn bridge in a traffic jam.

ယာဉ်ကြောပိတ်ဆို့မှုထဲက Brooklyn တံတားပေါ်မှာငြိနေတဲ့ ဒီပုံကိုဆွဲတယ်။

It's really annoying, but also kind of poetic.

တကယ့် စိတ်တိုစရာကောင်းပေမဲ့ ကဗျာလည်းဆန်တာမျိုးပါ။

And only later I realized,

နောက်မှပဲ သဘောပေါက်မိတာက

I can take both of these ideas and put them together in this idea.

ဒီစိတ်ကူးနှစ်ခုစလုံးကိုယူပြီး ဒီစိတ်ကူးထဲမှာ အတူတူထားနိုင်တယ်ဆိုတာပါ။

And what I want to do is not show a realistic scene.

ကျွန်တော်လုပ်ချင်တာက သဘာဝကျတဲ့ မြင်ကွင်းတစ်ခုပြဖို့မဟုတ်ဘူး။

But, maybe like poetry,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဖြစ်နိုင်တာက ကဗျာစာပေလို

make you aware that you already had this image with you,

ခင်ဗျားနဲ့အတူ ဒီရုပ်ပုံဟာ ရှိပြီးသားဆိုတာ သတိမူမိစေဖို့ပါ။

but only now I've unearthed it

ဒါပေမဲ့ အခုတင်ပဲ ဒါကို ယက်ထုတ်ပြီး

and made you realize that you were carrying it with you all along.

ခင်းဗျားဟာ ဒါကို တစ်ချိန်လုံး သယ်ဆောင်လာတာကို သဘောပေါက်စေဖို့ပါ။

But like poetry, this is a very delicate process

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကဗျာစာပေလိုပဲ ဒါဟာ အင်မတန် သိမ်မွေ့တဲ့ဖြစ်စဉ်ပါ၊

that is neither efficient nor scalable, I think.

ဒါက ကျင်လည်တာမဟုတ်၊ တိုင်းတာလို့လည်း မရဘူးလို့ထင်တယ်။

And maybe the most important skill for an artist

ဖြစ်နိုင်တာက အနုပညာရှင်တစ်ဦးအတွက် အရေးအကြီးဆုံး ကျွမ်းကျင်မှုက

is really empathy.

တကယ့်ထပ်တူခံစားမှုပါ။

You need craft and you need --

ခင်ဗျားမှာ ကျွမ်းကျင်မှုလိုပြီး

you need creativity --

ဖန်တီးနိုင်မှု လိုအပ်ပါတယ်

to come up with an image like that.

ဒီလို ရုပ်ပုံမျိုးတစ်ပုံ ရလာဖို့ပေါ့။

But then you need to step back

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဒီနောက်မှာ နောက်ပြန်ဆုတ်ပြီး

and look at what you've done from the perspective of the reader.

စာဖတ်သူရဲ့ ရှုထောင့်ကနေ ကြည့်ဖို့လိုတယ်။

I've tried to become a better artist by becoming a better observer of images.

ပိုတော်တဲ့ ရုပ်ပုံ လေ့လာသူဖြစ်လာရင်းကနေ ပိုတော်တဲ့ ပန်းချီဆရာဖြစ်ဖို့ကြိုးစားတယ်။

And for that, I started an exercise for myself

ဒါအတွက် ကိုယ်တိုင် လေ့ကျင့်ခန်းတစ်ခု စလုပ်ခဲ့တယ်။

which I call Sunday sketching,

တနင်္ဂနွေ ပုံကြမ်းရေးခြင်း လို့ခေါ်လိုက်တယ်၊

which meant, on a Sunday, I would take a random object I found around the house

ဆိုလိုတာက တနင်္ဂနွေတစ်ရက်မှာ အိမ်အနီးအနား တဝိုက်မှာ တွေ့ရာအရာဝတ္ထုတစ်ခုကိုယူပြီး

and try to see if that object could trigger an idea

ဒီအရာဝတ္ထုဟာ ဒီပစ္စည်းရဲ့ မူလ ရည်ရွယ်ချက်နဲ့မဆိုင်တဲ့ စိတ်ကူးတစ်ခုကို

that had nothing to do with the original purpose of that item.

အစပျိုးပေးနိုင်လားဆိုတာ ကြိုးစားပြီး ကြည့်တယ်။

And it usually just means I'm blank for a long while.

အမြဲလို ဆိုလိုတာက ကျုပ်ဟာ အတော်ကြာကြာ ကွက်လပ်ဖြစ်နေတာပါ။

And the only trick that eventually works is if I open my mind

နောက်ဆုံးမှာ အလုပ်ဖြစ်တဲ့ တစ်ခုတည်းသော လှည့်ကွက်က

and run through every image I have stored up there,

ကျွန်တော့ စိတ်ကို ဖွင့်ကာ သိမ်းထားတဲ့ ပုံတိုင်းကို ခပ်သုတ်သုတ်ကြည့်ကာ

and see if something clicks.

တစ်ခုခု နှိပ်လားဆိုတာ ကြည့်ပါ။

And if it does, just add a few lines of ink to connect --

ဒါ နှိပ်တယ်ဆိုရင် ဆက်သွယ်ဖို့ မင်ကြောင်းအနည်းငယ် ထပ်ဖြည့်လိုက်ပါ။

to preserve this very short moment of inspiration.

ဒီစေ့ဆော်မှုရဲ့ တိုတောင်းတဲ့ တဒင်္ဂကို ထိန်းသိမ်းဖို့ပါ။

And the great lesson there

ဒီက ထူးကဲတဲ့ သင်ခန်းစာတစ်ခုက

was that the real magic doesn't happen on paper.

တကယ့်မှော်ဆန်မှုက စာရွက်ပေါ်မှာ ဖြစ်ပေါ်မလာတာပါ။

It happens in the mind of the viewer.

ဒါက ကြည့်သူရဲ့စိတ်မှာ ဖြစ်ပေါ်တာပါ။

When your expectations and your knowledge clash with my artistic intentions.

ခင်ဗျားတို့ မျှော်လင့်ချက်တွေနဲ့ အသိသုတဟာ ကျုပ်အနုပညာ ရည်ရွယ်ချက်နဲ့ တိုက်မိချိန်ပါ။

Your interaction with an image,

ခင်ဗျားရဲ့ ရုပ်ပုံတစ်ပုံနဲ့ တုံ့ပြန်ဆက်သွယ်မှု

your ability to read, question, be bothered or bored or inspired

ရုပ်ပုံတစ်ပုံကြောင့် အနှောက်အယှက်ဖြစ်လား ငြီးငွေ့လား၊ စ​ေ့ဆော်ပေးလာ ဖတ်ဖို့၊မေးဖို့

by an image

ခင်ဗျားရဲ့အရည်အချင်းဟာ

is as important as my artistic contribution.

အနုပညာပိုင်း ဆောင်ရွက်မှုလိုပဲ အရေးပါပါတယ်။

Because that's what turns an artistic statement

အကြောင်းက ဒါက အနုပညာရှင်ရဲ့ တင်ပြချက်ကို တကယ့်ကို ဆန်းသစ်တဲ့ ဆွေးနွေးမှုအဖြစ်

really, into a creative dialogue.

ပြောင်းလဲပေးလို့ပါ။

And so, your skill at reading images

ဒီလိုနဲ့ ရုပ်ပုံတွေဖတ်တဲ့ ခင်ဗျားရဲ့ ကျွမ်းကျင်မှုက

is not only amazing,

အံဖွယ်ကောင်းတာတင်မဟုတ်ပဲ

it is what makes my art possible.

ကျွန်တော့ အနပညာကိုပါ ဖြစ်နိုင်​စေတာပါ။
