Why is there a world, why are we in it,

So it's conceivable, if God were to exist,

he might wonder, I'm eternal, I'm all-powerful,

And so one theory is that God was so bored with

Take God out of the equation: We have

Now, if you're a Buddhist,

you might want to stop right there,

But I'm a Westerner, and I'm still concerned

Well, how about science?

Science is our best guide to the nature of reality,

and the most fundamental science is physics.

That tells us what naked reality really is,

Okay, this is a really ingenious scenario.

The laws of quantum field theory for him

The laws have some sort of ontological power or clout

Why quantum field theory that describes

and particles and so forth?

Why not a completely different set of laws?

There are many, many mathematically consistent sets of laws.

So this is a problem, believe it or not,

that include some things and leave out others.

So one of these intermediate realities

is, say, the most mathematically elegant reality,

that leaves out the inelegant bits,

the ugly asymmetries and so forth.

Now, there are some physicists who will tell you

that we're actually living in the most elegant reality.

I think that Brian Greene is in the audience,

and he has written a book called "The Elegant Universe."

He claims that the universe we live in mathematically

is very elegant.

It's a pious hope, I wish it were true,

but I think the other day he admitted to me

بەڵام پێموابێت ئەو ڕۆژە دانی پیانا بۆم

it's really an ugly universe.

کە بەڕاستی گەردوونێکی ناشرینە.

It's stupidly constructed,

بێمێشکانە دروستکراوە،

it's got way too many arbitrary coupling constants

چەندین یەکگرتنی ژمارەی نەگۆڕی نابەجێ لەخۆ دەگرێت و

and mass ratios

and superfluous families of elementary particles,

خێزانی پڕ لە هەڵەی تەنە توخمییەکان، و

and what the hell is dark energy?

It's a stick and bubble gum contraption.

It's not an elegant universe. (Laughter)

And then there's the best of all possible worlds

ئینجا دواتریش باشترینی هەموو جیهانەکان هەیە کە دەکرێت هەبن

in an ethical sense.

لە ڕووییەکی ڕەوشتییەوە.

You should get solemn now,

ئێستا پێویستە ئاینی بیت،

because a world in which sentient beings

چونکە جیهانێک کە بوونەوەرە بە هەستەکان

don't suffer needlessly,

بێ ئەوەی پێویستکات ناناڵێنن،

in which there aren't things like

کە هەندێک شت بوونیان نییە وەک

childhood cancer or the Holocaust.

This is an ethical conception.

Anyway, so between nothingness

بەهەرحاڵ، کەواتە لەنێوان نەبوون و

and the fullest possible reality,

various special realities.

چەندین واقیعی هەمەجۆر.

Nothingness is special. It's the simplest.

نەبوون تایبەتە. سادەترینە.

Then there's the most elegant possible reality.

ئینجا جوانترین واقعیش هەیە کە دەکرێت هەبێت.

That's special.

ئەوە تایبەتە.

The fullest possible reality, that's special.

پڕترین واقیع کە بکرێت، ئەوە تایبەتە.

But what are we leaving out here?

بەڵام چیمان لەبەرچاو نەگرتووە؟

There's also just the crummy,

ئینجا واقیعە بێزراوەکەی تریشمان هەیە

generic realities

واقیعە گشتییەکان

that aren't special in any way,

کە بەهیچ شێوەیەک تایبەت نین،

that are sort of random.

کە کەمێک هەڕەمەکییە.

They're infinitely removed from nothingness,

بەشێوەیەکی بێکۆتا لە بەتاڵی دەرکراون،

but they fall infinitely short of complete fullness.

بەڵام بەشێوەیەکی بێکۆتا دورن لە پڕییەوە.

They're a mixture of chaos and order,

of mathematical elegance and ugliness.

So I would describe these realities

بۆیە بەم جۆرە واقیعانە دەڵێم

as an infinite, mediocre, incomplete mess,

شێواوییەکی بێکۆتای ناتەواوی مامناوەند،

a generic reality, a kind of cosmic junk shot.

واقیعێکی گشتی، جۆرێک لە واقعی گەردوونی نەویستراو.

And these realities,

ئەم واقیعانەش،

is there a deity in any of these realities?

ئایا هیچ درووستکەرێک هەیە لەم واقیعانەدا؟

Maybe, but the deity isn't perfect

لەوانەیە، بەڵام درووستکەرەکە بێ کەموکوڕی نییە

like the Judeo-Christian deity.

وەک درووستکەری مەسیحی و یەهودی.

The deity isn't all-good and all-powerful.

درووستکەرەکە باش و بەهێز نییە.

It might be instead 100 percent malevolent

لەوانەیە لەسەدا سەد چاکەکار بێت

but only 80 percent effective,

بەڵام تەنیا لەسەدا هەشتا کاریگەر،

which pretty much describes the world we see around us, I think. (Laughter)

کە هەتا ڕادەیەکی زۆر پێناسەی جیهانەکەی چواردەورمان ئەکات. (پێکەنین)

So I would like to propose that the resolution

کەواتە ئەمەوێ پێشنیاری ئەوە بکەم کە وەڵامی

to the mystery of existence

مەتەڵی بوون

is that the reality we exist in

ئەوەیە کە واقیعەکەی تیایاین

is one of these generic realities.

یەکێکە لە واقیعە گشتییەکان.

Reality has to turn out some way.

واقیع پێویستە بە دیوێکا بشکێتەوە.

It can either turn out to be nothing

یان دەکرێت هیچ دەرچێت

or everything or something in between.

یان هەموو شتێک یان شتێک لەو نێوانەدا.

So if it has some special feature,

بۆیە ئەگەر هەندێک تایبەتمەندی هەبێت،

like being really elegant or really full

وەک ئەوەی زۆر جوان یان پڕبێت

or really simple, like nothingness,

یان سادە بێت، وەک نەبوون،

that would require an explanation.

کە پێویستی بە ڕوونکردنەوەیەک بێت.

But if it's just one of these random, generic realities,

بەڵام ئەگەر هەر یەکێک لەم واقیعە هەڕەمەکییە گشتیانە بێت

there's no further explanation for it.

هیچ ڕوونکردنەوەیەکی تر نابێت بۆی.

And indeed, I would say

وە بێگومان، ئەتوانم بڵێم

that's the reality we live in.

کە ئەوە واقیعەکەیە کە تیایدا ئەژین.

That's what science is telling us.

ئەوە ئەو شتەیە کە زانست پێمان ئەڵێت.

At the beginning of the week,

لە سەرەتای هەفتەکەدا،

we got the exciting information that

زانیارییەکی سەرنج ڕاکێشمان پێگەشت کە

the theory of inflation, which predicts a big,

بیردۆزی فراوانبوونەکە، کە پێشبینی واقیعێکی

infinite, messy, arbitrary, pointless reality,

گەورەی بێکۆتای شێواوی بێ مەبەست ئەکات،

it's like a big frothing champagne

وەک شامپانیایەکی کەفکردوو وایە

coming out of a bottle endlessly,

بێکۆتا لە سەری بتڵەکە یەتە دەرەوە،

a vast universe, mostly a wasteland

گەردوونێکی فراوان، بەزۆری زەوییەکی خاپور

with little pockets of charm and order and peace,

بە چەند شوێنێکی بچووکی سەرنج ڕاکێش و ڕێکخراو و بێ کێشە،

this has been confirmed,

ئەمە دووپاتکراوەتەوە،

this inflationary scenario, by the observations

ئەم سیناریۆی فراوانبوونە، بە چاودێرییەکانی

made by radio telescopes in Antarctica

بە تەلەسکۆپە ڕادیۆییەکان کراون لە جەمسەری باشوور

that looked at the signature of the gravitational waves

کە سەیری نیشانەکانی شەپۆلە کێشکردنەکانی کردووە

from just before the Big Bang.

لە پێش کاتی تەقینەوە گەورەکەوە.

I'm sure you all know about this.

دڵنیام هەمووتان لەبارەی ئەمەوە ئەزانن.

So anyway, I think there's some evidence

کەواتە بەهەرحاڵ، پێموابێت هەندێک بەڵگە هەیە

that this really is the reality that we're stuck with.

کە ئەمە بەڕاستی واقیعەکەیە کە گیرمان خواردووە تیایدا.

Now, why should you care?

ئێستا، بۆچی ئەبێ گرنگی پێبەیت؟

Well — (Laughter) —

ڕاستییەکەی --(پێکەنین (--

the question, "Why does the world exist?"

پرسیارەکە، "بۆچی گەردوون هەیە؟"

that's the cosmic question, it sort of rhymes

ئەوە پرسیارە گەردوونییەکەیە، کەمێکیش یەک ئەگرێتەوە

with a more intimate question:

لەگەڵ پرسیارەکەی نزیکترە:

Why do I exist? Why do you exist?

بۆچی من هەم؟ بۆچی تۆ هەیت؟

you know, our existence would seem to be amazingly improbable,

because there's an enormous number of genetically possible humans,

And the number of the actual humans that have existed

is 100 billion, maybe 50 billion,

an infinitesimal fraction, so all of us,

we've won this amazing cosmic lottery.

We're here. Okay.

So what kind of reality do we want to live in?

Do we want to live in a special reality?

ئەمانەوێت لە واقیعێکی تایبەتدا بژین؟

What if we were living in the most elegant possible reality?

ئەی ئەگەر لەناو جوانترین واقیعدا بژین کە دەکرێت هەبێت؟

Imagine the existential pressure on us

ئەو فشارە بێشوومارە بهێنەرە بەرچاوت کە لەسەرمانە

to live up to that, to be elegant,

بتوانیت لە ئاست ئەوەدا بیت، بەجوانی بژیت،

not to pull down the tone of it.

لە بەهای کەم نەکەیتەوە.

Or, what if we were living in the fullest possible reality?

چی ئەبێ ئەگەر لە پڕترین واقیعدا بژین کە دەکرێت هەبێت؟

Well then our existence would be guaranteed,

ئەوکاتە بوونمان گرنتی پێدەدرێت،

because every possible thing

چونکە هەموو شتێک کە دەکرێت هەبێت

exists in that reality,

لەناو ئەو واقیعەدایە،

but our choices would be meaningless.

بەڵام هەڵبژاردنەکانمان بێواتا ئەبن.

If I really struggle morally and agonize

ئەگەر لەڕووی ڕەوشتییەوە بناڵێنم و تێبکشۆم و

and I decide to do the right thing,

بڕیار بەم کارە ڕاستەکە بکەم،

what difference does it make,

چی جیاوازییەک دروست ئەکات،

because there are an infinite number

چونکە ژمارەیەکی بێکۆتا

of versions of me

وەشانی من هەیە

also doing the right thing

کە هەر کارە ڕاستەکە ئەکەن و

and an infinite number doing the wrong thing.

ژمارەیەکی بێکۆتاش کارە هەڵەکە ئەکەن.

So my choices are meaningless.

کەواتە هەڵبژاردنەکانم بێواتان.

So we don't want to live in that special reality.

And as for the special reality of nothingness,

بۆ واقیعە تایبەتەکەی نەبوونیش،

we wouldn't be having this conversation.

تەنانەت ئەم گفتوگۆیەشمان نابێت.

So I think living in a generic reality that's mediocre,

کەواتە پێموایە ژیان لەناو واقیعێکی گشتیدا کە مامناوەندە،

there are nasty bits and nice bits

بەشی جوان و باشی ناشرینی هەیە و

and we could make the nice bits bigger

ئەشتوانین بەشە جوانەکە گەورەتر و

and the nasty bits smaller

ناشرینەکە بچووکتر بکەین و

and that gives us a kind of purpose in life.

ئەوەش جۆرێك لە ئامانجمان ئەیاتێ لە ژیاندا.

The universe is absurd,

گەردوون نابەجێیە،

but we can still construct a purpose,

بەڵام هێشتا دەتوانین ئامانجێک درووستکەین، و

and that's a pretty good one,

ئەوەش دانەیەکی باشە، و

and the overall mediocrity of reality

تەواوی مامناوەندی واقیعیەت

kind of resonates nicely with the mediocrity

بەجۆرێک یەکدەگرێتەوە لەگەڵ مامناوەندییەکەی

we all feel in the core of our being.

هەموو هەستی پێ ئەکەین لە کرۆکی بوونماندا.

And I know you feel it.

ئەشزانم هەستی پێئەکەن.

I know you're all special,

ئەزانم هەمووتان تایبەتن،

but you're still kind of secretly mediocre,

بەڵام هێشتا بەجۆرێک بەنهێنی مامناوەندن،

don't you think?

پێتان وانییە؟

So anyway, you may say, this puzzle, the mystery of existence,

it's just silly mystery-mongering.

You're not astonished at the existence of the universe

and you're in good company.

Bertrand Russell said,

بێرتراند رەسڵ دەڵێت،

"I should say the universe is just there, and that's all."

"ئەبێ بڵێم کە گەردوون هەیە، و هەر ئەوەنەش هەیە بۆ وتن."

Just a brute fact.

تەنیا ڕاستییەکی زەق.

And my professor at Columbia, Sidney Morgenbesser,

پرۆفیسۆرەکەشم لە کۆڵۆمبیا، سیدنی مۆرگینبێسەر،

a great philosophical wag,

فەیلەسووفێکی مەزن،

when I said to him, "Professor Morgenbesser,

کاتێک پێموت، "پرۆفیسۆر مۆرگینبێسەر،

why is there something rather than nothing?"

And he said, "Oh, even if there was nothing,

you still wouldn't be satisfied."

So you're not astonished. I don't care.

But I will tell you something to conclude

بەڵام شتێکتان پێئەڵێم بۆ تەواوکردنەکە

that I guarantee you will astonish you,

کە دڵنیام سەرسام ئەبن پێی،

because it's astonished all of the brilliant,

چونکە هەموو کەسە بلیمەتەکانی سەرسام کردووە،

wonderful people I've met at this TED conference,

when I've told them, and it's this:
