Kartick Satyanarayan: How we rescued the "dancing" bears

Hi. For those of you who haven't seen dancing bears,

سڵاو، بۆ ئەوانەی ورچە سەماکەرەکانیان نەبینیوە،

these are the dancing bears.

ئەمانە ورچە سەماکەرەکانن.

In 1995, we started working on a two-year investigative research project

لەساڵی١٩٩٥دەستمان کرد بە کار کردن بۆ ٢ساڵ لەسەر پڕۆژەیەکی وردودرێژ

to try and find out what was going on.

بۆ هەوڵدان و دۆزینەوەی کە چی دەگوزەرێت.

Because the sloth bears in the wild were obviously getting depleted

because of this.

بەهۆی ئەمە.

This is the Qalandar community. They are a marginalized Islamic community

کۆمەڵگەی قەلەندەرە کە کۆمەڵگەیەکی ئیسلامی پەڕاوێزە

who live across India,

کە لە هیندستان دەژین

and have been in India since the 13th century.

و لە سەدەی سێزدەهەمینەوە لە هندستان بوونە.

We went about getting evidence of what was going on.

And this is footage from a hidden camera in a button.

And we went in, pretending to be buyers.

And we found this right in this very state, in Karnataka.

و ڕاست ئەمانەمان دۆزیەوە، ئەم دۆخە لە کارناتاکا.

And the bear cubs were being harvested from across the country

و بێچووە ورچەکان دروێنە کرابوون لە دەورەبەری شارەکە.

and being sold and traded.

و دەفڕۆشران و بازرگانیان پێ دەکرا.

These were being sold for about 2,000 dollars each,

هەریەک بە نزیکی بە ٢٠٠٠دۆلار دەفڕۆشران.

and they are used for bear paw soup,

و بۆ شۆربای چنگی ورچ بەکار دەهاتن،

and also being trained, later on,

و هەروەها مەشق پێکرا بوون دواتر

to become dancing bears like the one you just saw.

بۆ ئەوەی ببێتە ورچێکی سەماکەر وەکو ئەوەی تازە بینیت.

Sadly, the family of Qalandars depended on this bear.

بەخەمەوە، خێزانی قەلەندەرەکە پشت بە ئەم ورچانە دەبەستێت.

The couple are barely 18 years old.

ئەم جووتەکە بە نزیکەی ١٨ سال دەبن.

They already have four children beside them. You can see them.

بەرلەوە، چوار منداڵیان لەلا بوو. دەتوانی بیان بینیت.

And the economy of the family and their livelihood depended on those animals.

و ئابووری خێزانەکە و گوزەرانیان بەستراوە بە ئەم گیانەوەرانە.

So, we had to deal with it in a very practical and sustainable manner.

بۆیە پێویستە لەگەڵی بگونجێین بەڕێگەیەکی زۆر کرداری و پاڵپشتیانە.

Now, when we started working deeper and digging deeper,

ئێستا کاتێک دەستمان کرد بە کار کردن و هەڵکۆڵین بە قووڵی،

we found that it's an illegal act.

کردەوەیەکی ناڕەوامان دۆزیەوە،

These guys could go to jail for up to seven years

کە لەوانەیە بەهۆی ئەمە حەوت ساڵ بچنە بەندیخانە

if they were caught by authorities.

ئەگەر بگیرێن لەلایەن دەسەڵاتەوە.

And what they were doing to the bears was really appalling.

ئەوەی بە ورچەکان کرا بە دڵنیای ترسناک بوو.

It was unacceptable.

ئەوە پەسندنەکراو بوو.

The mother bears are usually killed.

زۆربەی کات دایکە و رچەکان دەکوژران.

The cubs, which are taken, are separated.

بێچووەکان کە دەست بەسەر داگیراوەکان جیا دەکرێنەوە.

Their teeth are basically bashed out with a metal rod.

کە بەشێوەیەکی بنچینەی تووڵی کانزا لە ددانەکانیان دەدرێت.

And they use a red hot iron needle to make a hole through the muzzle.

و دەرزی ئاسنی سۆریان بەکار دەهێنا بۆ دروست کردنی کونی دەمامک.

Now we had to start changing these people and converting them from using that

ئێستا پێویستە، دەست بکەین بە گۆڕینی خەڵک و گۆڕینیان لە بەکارهێنانی ئەمە

for a livelihood, to getting something else.

بۆ گوزەران و گەیشتن بە شتێکی تر.

So, this is Bitu Qalandar, who was our first experiment.

کەواتە، ئەمە بێتو قەلەندەر کە یەکەمین تاقیکردنەوەمان بوو.

And we were so unsure that this would work.

و زۆردوودڵ بووین ئەم کارە سەربگرێت.

We weren't sure at all. And we managed to convince him.

هیچ دڵنیا نەبووین و سەرکەوتوو بوین لە رازی کردنی.

And we said, "Okay, here is some seed fund.

وتمان باشە: فەرموو ئەو پارە.

Let's see if you can get something else." And we got the bear surrendered

ئەگەر دەتوانیت شتێکیتر بکەیت و ورچەکان ڕزگار بکەیت

to -- we set up a sanctuary. We have four sanctuaries in India.

پەناگەمان دامەزراندن. چوار دانەمان دامەزراند.

And now he sells cool drinks, he's by the highway.

و ئێستا لە سەر ڕێگای گشتی خواردنەوە دەفڕۆشێت.

He has a telephone booth.

فڕۆشگەیەکی بچووکی مۆبایلی هەیە.

And then it started, there was no turning back after that.

دوای دەست پێ کردن گەڕانەوە بۆ دواوە نەبوو.

This is Sadua who came and surrendered his bear.

ئەمە سادوە کە ورچەکانی ڕزگار کرد.

And now he runs a cattle fodder store and a grain store

ئێستا فڕۆشگەی ئالیکی ئاژەڵ و دانەوێڵە لە نزیک ئاگرا

near Agra.

بەڕێوە دەبات.

Then there was no looking back at all for us.

دواترهیچ ئاوڕدانەوەیەک بۆ ڕابردوومان نەبوو.

We gave cycle rickshaws.

عەرەبانەی دەستگێڕی دەستمان پێدان.

We set up carpet-weaving units,

یەکەی چنینی فەرشمان دانا،

vocational training for the women.

کە ڕاهێنانی پێشەی بە ژنان دەکرد.

The women were just not allowed to come out of the community

ژن ڕێگە پێنەدراو بوو لە کۆمەڵگە دەرکەوێت

and work with mainstream society. So, we were able to address that.

وکار لە لە کۆمەڵگەیەکی باو بکات بۆیە توانای چارەسەری ئەوەمان هەبوو.

Education. The kids never went to school.

پەروەردە. منداڵەکان نەدەنێردرانە قوتابخانە بۆ فێر کردن.

They only had Islamic education, very little of it.

تەنها پەروەردەی ئیسلامیان هەبووە کە کەم بوو.

And they were never allowed to go to school

و ڕێگە پێدراو نەبوون بچن بۆ قوتابخانە

because they were an extra earning hand at home. So we managed to get education.

چونکە هێزی کار بوون لە ماڵ. بۆیە پەروەردەمان بۆ ڕێکخستن.

So, we sponsor 600 children education programs today.

ئەمڕۆ پاڵپشتی ٦٠٠ بەرنامەی پەروەردەی منداڵ دەکەین.

We were able to ensure brighter futures for these people.

توانیمان داهاتووەکی گەش بۆ خەڵک دابین بکەین.

Of course we also had to get the bears in.

بێ گومان هەروەها پێویستە ورچەکانیش بەشدار بکەین.

ورچەکان بەم شێوەیە مامەڵەیان لەگەڵ دەکرا کاتێک وەرمان گرتن.

This is what happens to the bears when they come in.

And this is what we turn them into.

ئێمە ئاوامان لێ کردن.

We have a veterinary facility in our rescue centers.

ئاسانکاری ڤیتەرنیمان لە ناوەندی ڕزگارکردنمان هەبوو.

So, basically in 2002 there were

بۆیە بەشێوەیەکی بنچینەی لەساڵی ٢٠٠٢ەوە

1,200 dancing bears.

We rescued over 550 dancing bears.

We've been able to ensure better futures for the people and the bears.

The big news that I want to announce today

هەواڵە گەورەکەی کە دەمەوێت ڕابگەیەنم ئەمڕۆ

is that next month we will be bringing in

کە لە مانگی داهاتوو

the very last bear of India,

کۆتا ورچی سەماکەر لە هیندستان

into our rescue center.

بۆ ناوەندەکەمان دەگوازینەوە و رزگاری دەکەین.

And India will no longer have to witness this cruel barbaric practice

وهندستان هیچیتر گەواهی بۆ ئەم ڕاهێنانە بەربەرانە ستەمکارە نادات

which has been here for centuries.

کە چەند سەدەیەکە بوونی هەیە.

And the people can hold their heads up high.

و خەڵکەکە دەتوانن سەریان بەرز ڕابگرن.

And the Qalandar people will rise above all this cruel barbaric past

خەڵکی قەلەندەریش سەڕەرایی ڕابردووی قورس بەرو پێش دەچن

that they've lived all their lives.

ژیانی کۆن جێدەهێڵن.

And the beautiful bears can of course live in the wild again.

و ورچە جوانەکان بە دڵنیاییەوە دەتوانن دووبارە لە بیابان بژین.

And there will be no more removing of these bears.

وهیچی تر لابردنی ئەم ورچانە نابێت.

And the children, both humans and bear cubs

و منداڵەکان، و هەردوو مرۆڤ و بێچووی ورچەکان

can live peacefully. Thank you.

دەتوانن ئاشتیخوازانە بژین. سوپاس بۆ ئێوە.
