Migrants do not enjoy much freedom of movement

in our world today.

This certainly applies to those who are desperate enough

ئەمە بۆ هەموو ئەو کەسانەی دووچاری خەمۆکی بوون دەشێت

to navigate choppy and stormy seas in boats.

تا بە بەلەم بە شەپۆل و زریانی دەریادا بڕۆن.

These are the risks my cousins from West Africa and North Africa face

ئەمانە ئەو مەترسیانەن کە لە خۆرئاوا و باکوری ئەفریقیا دووچاری کۆچبەران دەبێتەوە

while trying to cross over to Europe.

لەکاتی هەوڵدانیان بۆ پەڕینەوە بۆ ئەوروپا.

Indeed, it is a rare but fortunate opportunity

لەڕاستیدا، دەرفەتێکی دەگمەنە بەڵام ناوازەیە.

for a migrant to address a gathering like this.

بۆ کۆچبەرەکان بەم شێوەیە کۆببنەوە.

But this also signifies what often is missing

بەڵام ئەوە دەردەخات کە نادیارە

in the global debate over refugees,

لە مشتومڕی جیهانی دەربارەی کۆچبەران،

migrants and immigrants,

کۆچبەری یاسایی و نایاسایی،

voices of the disenfranchised.

دەنگی بێ بەشکراوان.

Citizens of many host countries,

هاوڵاتیانی وڵاتانی خانەخوێ،

even those that previously welcomed newcomers,

تەنانەت ئەو خەڵکەی کە لە ڕابردوو پێشوازیان لە کۆچبەران دەکرد،

are uneasy about the rising numbers of individuals

بە بەرزبوونەوەی ژمارەی کۆچبەران دڵخۆش نین

coming into their countries.

کە ڕوویان لە وڵاتەکەیان کردووە.

The immediate criticism is that the newcomers upend the stability

ڕەخنە ئەوەیە تازەهاتوەکان سەقامگیری دەشێوێنن

of social welfare and employment in their countries.

چاودێری کۆمەڵایەتی و هەلی کارە لە وڵاتەکەیاندا تێکدەدەن.

Uncertain and skeptical citizens look towards politicians

who are competing against each other to see who can claim the prize

of the loudest voice of populism and nationalism.

زیاتر جەخت لەسەر نەتەوەپەرستی و فەوزا دەکات.

It is a contest of who is the toughest on migrants,

ململانێیە لەسەر ئەوەی کە کێ یاسایی قورستر بەسەر کۆچبەران دەسەپێنێت،

the most willing to impose travel bans

یاساغ کردنی سەفەری کۆچبەران خواستی زۆرینەیە

and the most eager to propose projects in building walls.

یان کێ پەرۆشترە بۆ دروست کردنی دیواری جیاکاری.

All these restrictions simply address symptoms of the problem,

هەموو ئەو بەربەستانە بەرهەمی کێشەکان نیشان دەدەن،

not the causes.

نەک هۆکارەکەی.

Why are they coming?

ئەوان بۆچی دێن؟

Migrants can share perspectives,

کۆچبەران دەتوانن بیرۆکەکانیان

if only politicians would be willing to listen.

باس بکەن، ئەگەر سیاسەتمەدارەکان بیانەوێ گوێ بگرن .

In Dubai, I chronicled injustices and inequalities inflicted regularly

لە دوبەی، بە بەردەوامی نایەکسانی و جیاوازیم دەبینی

on the migrant labor force.

لەسەر هێزى ئيشكردنى کۆچبەران.

As a result, pressures from the governments

لە ئەنجامی فشاری حکومەتەکان

of the respective countries

led to me being forced out of my career as a journalist in the Middle East.

ناچاریان کردم وەک ڕۆژنامەنووسێکی ڕۆژهەڵاتی ناوەڕاست کارەکەم جێبهێڵم.

I was deported to Uganda,

منیان بۆئۆگەندا ناردەوە،

where economic deprivation puts everyone at the risk of starvation.

کە قەیرانی ئابووری هەمووان دەخاتە مەترسی برسیەتیەوە.

I fled Uganda to come to the United States

لە ئۆگەنداوە ڕامکرد بۆ وڵایەتە یەکگرتوەکان

in the hope of sustaining a voice for my brothers and sisters

بە هیوای بەدەست هێنانی پشتگیری دەنگی خوشک و براکانم

who experience a more serious plight as migrants.

وەک کۆچبەرێک ڕووبەڕوی کێشە و تەنگانەی زۆر بوونەتەوە.

My father told me he was not happy about me writing a book

باوکم پێی ڕاگەیاندم کە نووسینی کتێب بیرۆکەیەکی باش نیە چونکە

that risked deportation and unemployment.

لەوانیە دوچاری مەترسی پێنەدانی ئیش و ناردنەوەم بۆ ئۆگەندا بکات.

He had been diabetic for many years when I still worked in Dubai,

چەندین ساڵ بە دەست شەكرەوە دەیناڵاند . كاتێك هێشتا لە دوبەى كارم دەكرد،

and my salary was always sufficient to pay for his treatments.

موچەکەی منیش تەنیا بەشی چارەسەری ئەو بوو.

After I was expelled,

دوای ئەوەی دەرکرام،

I could not afford to sustain his treatment,

نەمتوانی پارەی چارەسەرەکەی بدەم،

and even in the last days of his life,

تەنانەت لە کۆتا ڕۆژەکانی ژیانیشیدا،

I could not afford to take him to a hospital.

نەمتوانی بۆ نەخۆشخانەی ببەم.

As I carried his body in my hands to lay it in the ground

تا بە دەستەکانی خۆم لە ژێر زەوی ناشتم

in June of last year,

مانگی ٦ی ساڵی پار،

I realized I had paid a profound price

تێگەیشتم کە لەبەرامبەر خستنە ڕووی گرفتەکان و دەنگ هەڵبڕینم

for amplifying my voice.

باجێکی گەورەم دا.

The act of speaking up against injustices that are multilayered is never easy,

because the problems require more than just rhetoric.

So long as gold mines, oilfields and large farms in Africa continue to be owned

and those vital resources are shipped to the West,

the stream of African migrants will flow continuously.

There are no restrictions that could ever be so rigorous

بە شێوەیەکی تۆکمە هیچ بەربەستێک نییە بۆ وەستاندنی کۆچی بە کۆمەڵ

to stop the wave of migration that has determined our human history.

کە کاریگەریان لەسەر ڕێڕەوی مێژووی مرۆڤایەتیمان هەیە.

Before border controls can be tightened

پێش ئەوەی سنوورەکان توند بکرێن

and new visa restrictions imposed,

و سەپاندنی سنووردار كردنى ڤيزاى

countries that have long received migrants

ئەو وڵاتانەی بۆماوەیەکی درێژ کۆچبەریان وەرگرتووە

should engage in a more open discussion.

دەبێت بەشداری گفتوگۆی کراوەتر بکەن.

That is the only practical start for reconciling, finally,

ئەمە تەنها ڕێگە چارەی کردەییە بۆ کەم بوونەوەی ڕێژەی کۆچبەران،

a legacy of exploitation,

مێژوویەکی دوور و درێژی چەوساندنەوە،

slavery,

،کۆیلایەتی

colonialism

داگیرکاری

and imperialism,

و ئمپڕیالیزم

so that together, we can move forward in creating a more just global economy

بۆ ئەوەی پێکەوە بتوانین بەرەوپێش بچین بۆ دروستکردنی ئابووریەکی جیهانی یەکسان

in the 21st century --
