To start with, I'd like to break math down into two categories.

There's an aversion to word problems,

I'm sure we all agree that no problem worth solving is like that.

And the textbook, I think, knows how it's hamstringing students

because, watch this, this is the practice problem set.

When it comes time to do the actual problem set,

The question is: How long will it take you to fill it up?

First things first, we eliminate all the substeps.

Students have to develop those,

they have to formulate those.

And then notice that all the information written on there is stuff you'll need.

None of it's a distractor, so we lose that.

ئەمە بەو شێوەیە کە ئەزانی قولابەکەت ناوەتەوە، وایە؟

And that question, off this right here, is really fun for me

ئەو پرسیارەی کە ڕێک لێرەدایە بەراستی زۆر خۆشە بۆ من

because, like the intro,

چونکە وەکو سەرەتا وایە

I teach kids -- because of my inexperience --

وانە بە منداڵ ئلێمەوە -- بەهۆی ئەزمونەکانمەوە --

I teach the kids that are the most remedial, all right?

وانە بەو منداڵانە ئەڵێمەوە کە زۆر گرفتیان لە نووسین وخوێندنەوە هەیە، باشە؟

And I've got kids who will not join a conversation about math

وە هەندێک مناڵم لایە تێکەڵی گفوگۆیەک نابن کە دەربارەی بیرکارین

because someone else has the formula;

چونکە کەسێکی تر هاوکێشەکەی لایە؛

someone else knows how to work the formula better than me,

کەسێکی ترئەزانیت چۆن باشتر لە من کار لەگەڵ هاوکێشەکە بکەت

so I won't talk about it.

بۆیە قسەی لەسەر ناکەم

But here, every student is on a level playing field of intuition.

بەڵام لێرەدا، هەموو خوێندکارێک لە ئاستێکدایە کە کە گونجاوە لەگەڵ هزری بوارەکەیدا

Everyone's filled something up with water before,

هەموو کەسێک ستێکی پڕکردووە لە ئاو پێشتر

so I get kids answering the question, "How long will it take?"

بۆیە مندالم لایە تا وەڵامی پرسیارەکە بداتەوە، ' چەنی پێ ئەچێ تا پڕ بێت؟

I've got kids who are mathematically and conversationally intimidated

منداڵانێکم لایە کە لە ڕووی بیرکاری ئ گفوگۆشەوە ئەترسێن و بروایان بە خۆیان نیە تا

joining the conversation.

بەشداری گفتوگۆکە بکەن

We put names on the board, attach them to guesses,

هەندێک ناو ئەنوسم لەسەر بۆاردەکە و بانگیان ئەکەم تاوەکو هاوڵی لەگەڵ بدەن

and kids have bought in here.

وەمنداڵەکان بروایان بە هاتنە ئێرە هەیە

And then we follow the process I've described.

وە بەدووی ئەو پرۆسەیە دەکەوین کە باسم کرد

And the best part here, or one of the better parts

وە باشترین بەش لێرەدا . یان یەکێک لە باشترین بەشەکان

is that we don't get our answer from the answer key

ئەوەیە وەڵامەکەمان لە کلیلە وەڵامەکەوە وەرناگرین

in the back of the teacher's edition.

لە بەشی دواوەی کتێبی مامۆستاکە

We, instead, just watch the end of the movie.

لەجیاتی ئەوە، تەنها دا ئەنیشین و تەماشای کۆتایی فیلمەکە ئەکەین

(Laughter)

And that's terrifying,

وە ئەوەش تۆقێنەرە

because the theoretical models that always work out

چونکە شێوە تێۆریەکان کە هەمیشە بەسودن

in the answer key in the back of a teacher's edition,

لە کلیلە وەڵامەکانی بەشی دواوەی کتێبی مامۆستاکە

that's great, but

زۆر باشن، بەڵام

it's scary to talk about sources of error

when the theoretical does not match up with the practical.

But those conversations have been so valuable,

بەڵام ئەو گفتوگۆیانە زۆر بەبەهان

among the most valuable.

لە نێو بە بەهاترینەکاندا

So I'm here to report some really fun games

کەواتە من لێرەم تاوەکو جەند یاریەکی خۆشتان پێبڵێم

with students who come pre-installed

لەگەڵ ئەو خوێندکارانەی بەبێ خۆ ئامادەکردن دێن

with these viruses day one of the class.

بە پێجەوانەی رۆژێکی یەکێک لە پۆلەکان

These are the kids who now, one semester in,

ئەمانە ئەو خوێندکارانەن کە ئێستا کۆرسێکیان خوێندوە،

I can put something on the board,

ئەتوانم هەندێک شت لەسەر بۆردەکە بنوسم

totally new, totally foreign,

کە بەتەواوی نوێن و نامۆن

and they'll have a conversation about it for three or four minutes more

و خوێندکارەکان گفتوگۆی لەسەر دەکەن بۆ ماوەی سێ یان چوار خولەک زیاتر

than they would have at the start of the year,

لەوەی کە لە سەرەتای ساڵدا دەیانکرد

which is just so fun.

کە ئەمەش زۆر خۆشە

We're no longer averse to word problems,

ئێمە چیتر ڕقمان لە پرسیارە وشەییەکان نیە

because we've redefined what a word problem is.

چونکە دووبارە پێناسەی پرسیارە وشەییەکانمان کردەوە

We're no longer intimidated by math,

ئێمە چیتر لە بیرکاری ناتۆقین

because we're slowly redefining what math is.

چونکە وردە وردە پێناسەی ئەوە ءکەین تا بزانین بیرکاری چیە

This has been a lot of fun.

ئەمە زۆر چێژ بەخشبوو

I encourage math teachers I talk to to use multimedia,

هانی ئەو مامۆستایانەی بیرکاری ئەدەم کە قسەیان لەگەڵ ئەکەم تاوەکو دەنگ و رەنگ و وێنە وجووڵە بە کاربهێنن

because it brings the real world into your classroom

چونکە ئەو شێوەیە جیهانی ڕاستەقینە ئەهێنێتە ناو پۆلەکانتانەوە

in high resolution and full color;

بە شیکارکردنی بەرز وشەوق وزەوقەوە

to encourage student intuition for that level playing field;

to ask the shortest question you possibly can

بۆ پرسینی کورتترین پرسیار کە تۆ لە ئاستیدا بیت

and let those more specific questions come out in conversation;

وە بهێڵدرێت کە پرسیارە زۆر تایبەتەکان بکرێن لە گفتوگۆدا

to let students build the problem,

تا خوێندکاران بتوانن وەڵامی بدەنەوە

because Einstein said so;

چونکە ئەنیشتاین ئەمەی وتووە

and to finally, in total, just be less helpful,

وە لەکۆتایدا، بە گشتی، زۆر یارمەتی خواز مەبن

because the textbook is helping you in all the wrong ways:

چونکە کتێبەکە بە هەموو ڕێگە هەڵەکان یارمەتیتان ئەدات

It's buying you out of your obligation,

ئەوە لە ناچاریدا بنیاتتان دەنێت

for patient problem solving and math reasoning, to be less helpful.

بۆ چارەسرکردنی پرسیارەکانی بیرکاریش سودێکی ئەوتۆیان نیە

And why this is an amazing time to be a math teacher right now

وە بۆچی ئەمە کاتێکی زۆر گرنگە تا ببیتە مامۆستای بیرکاری لە ئێستادا؟

is because we have the tools to create

ئەوەش چونکە لە ئێستادا ئامرازمان لەبەردەستە بۆ خولقاندنی

this high-quality curriculum in our front pocket.

ئەم پرۆگرامە کوالیتی بەرزەی کە لە بەردەستماندایە

It's ubiquitous and fairly cheap,

ئەمەش لە هەموو شوێنێک هەیە و زۆریش هەرزانە

and the tools to distribute it

freely under open licenses

has also never been cheaper or more ubiquitous.

I put a video series on my blog not so long ago

ماویەکی کەمی پێش ئێستا چەند زنجیرەیەک گرتەی ڤیدیۆیم دانا لەسەر بلۆگەکەم

and it got 6,000 views in two weeks.

وە لە دوو هەفتەدا ٦٠٠٠ کەس تەماشی کرد

I get emails still from teachers in countries I've never visited

ئێستاش ئیمەیڵم بۆ دێت لەو وڵاتانەی کە هەرگیز سەردانم نەکردوون

saying, "Wow, yeah. We had a good conversation about that.

و دەڵێن' واو، زۆر جوانە، گفتگۆیەکی باشمان لەسەری ئەنجامداوە

Oh, and by the way, here's how I made your stuff better,"

ئۆو، بەم بۆنەیەوە، ئەمەتا شتەکانی تۆم بەو شێوەیە باشترکردووە،'

which, wow.

واو، کامە؟

I put this problem on my blog recently:

ئەم پرسیارەم بەم دواییانە لەسەر بلۆگەکەم داناوە

In a grocery store, which line do you get into,

لە کۆگایەکی بەقاڵیدا، لەکام لاوە دەچیتە ناوەوە

the one that has one cart and 19 items

ئەو لایەی عارەبانەیەک و ١٩ پارچە شتی لێیە

or the line with four carts and three, five, two and one items.

یان ئەو لایەی کە چوار عارەبانە و سێ و پێنج ، دوو و یەک شتی لێیە

And the linear modeling involved in that was some good stuff for my classroom,

وە یان ئەو لایەی کە کۆمەڵێ شتی باشی بۆ پۆلەکەم لێیە

but it eventually got me on "Good Morning America" a few weeks later,

'بەڵام لە کۆیاییدا، جەند هەفتەیکی کەمی دواتر بۆیان نوسیبووم ' بەیانیت باش ئەمریکا

which is just bizarre, right?

کە زۆر سەرنجراکێشە، وایە؟

And from all of this, I can only conclude

وە لە کۆی هەموو ئەوانە تەنها ئەتوانم بگەمە ئەو ئەنجامەی کە

that people, not just students,

نەک هەر خوێندکار، ئەو خەڵکەش

are really hungry for this.

بەراستی تینووی ئەمەن

Math makes sense of the world.

بیرکاری لۆجیک ی ئەم جیهانەیە

Math is the vocabulary

بیرکاری وشەکارییە

for your own intuition.

بۆ هزری تایببەتی خۆت

So I just really encourage you, whatever your stake is in education --

بۆیە بەراستی هانتان ئەدەم کە گوزەرانتان هەرچیەک بێت لە خوێندن و رۆشنبیریدایە

whether you're a student, parent, teacher, policy maker, whatever --

ئیتر ئەگەر خوێندکاری ، دایک یا باوک، مامۆستا، سیستم دارێژ یا هەرچیەکبێت

insist on better math curriculum.

جەخت لەسەر سیستمێکی باشتر بکەرەوە بۆ بیرکاری
