I've got a confession.

I love looking through people's garbage.

Now, it's not some creepy thing.

I'm usually just looking for old electronics,

stuff I can take to my workshop and hack.

I do have a fetish for CD-ROM drives.

Each one's got three different motors,

so now you can build things that move.

There's switches so you can turn things on and off.

Now, I've built a lot of stuff out of garbage,

and some of these things have even been kind of useful.

But here's the thing,

for me, garbage is just a chance to play,

to be creative and build things to amuse myself.

This is what I love doing, so I just made it part of my day job.

ئەها ئەز حەز ڤێ چەندێ دکەم کو بکەم،

ژبەر ڤێ چەندێ من یا کرییە پارچەک ژ کارێ خوە یێ ڕۆژێ.

I lead a university-based biological research lab,

ئەز تاقیگەهەکا ڤەکولینێن بایلوجی برێڤە دبەم لزانکویێ،

where we value curiosity and exploration above all else.

ئەو جهێ ئەم مەرەقێ و حەزا ئاشکەرا کرنێ لسەر هەمی تشتێن دی دئێخین.

We aren't focused on any particular problem,

ئەم گرنگییێ نادەینە چ ئاریشەیێن تایبەت،

and we're not trying to solve any particular disease.

و ئەم پێکولـێ ناکەین کو چ نەخوەشییێن تایبەت چارەسەر بکەین.

This is just a place where people can come

ئەڤە بتنێ جهەکە کو خەلک دشێت بهێتێ

and ask fascinating questions and find answers.

و پرسیارێن مەندەهوش بکەت و بەرسڤان ببینیت.

And I realized a long time ago

و بومن دیاربی بەری دەمەکێ درێژ

that if I challenge people to build the equipment they need

کو ئەگەر ئەز هەڤرکییێ دگەل خەلکی بکەم داکو وان کەلوپەلان دروست بکەن یێن ئەوپێتڤی

out of the garbage I find,

ژ وی گلێشێ کو ئەز دبینم،

it's a great way to foster creativity.

ئەڤە ڕێکەکا گەلەک باشە کو داهێنانێ زێدە تر لـێ بکەت.

And what happened

و ئەوا ڕویدای

was that artists and scientists from around the world

ئەوبی کو هونەرمەند و زانا ژجیهانێ هەمییێ

started coming to my lab.

دەستپێکرن کو بهێنە تاقیگەها من.

And it's not just because we value unconventional ideas,

و ئەڤە نە بتنێ ژبەرکو مە هزرێن نەئاسايی ببها ددانان،

it's because we test and validate them

بەلکو ژبەر وێ چەندێ بی کو مە ئەو هزرە تاقی دکرن و دسلەماندن

with scientific rigor.

براستیێن زانستی

So one day I was hacking something, I was taking it apart,

ڤێجا ڕۆژەکێ ئەز دتشتەکی دخەبتیم، من پارچە پارچە دکر،

and I had this sudden idea:

و بومن ئەڤ هزرا ژنیشکەکێ ڤە پەیدا بی:

Could I treat biology like hardware?

ئەرێ ئەز دێ شێم ڕەفتارێ دگەل بایولوجییێ کەم وەک ئامیرەکی؟

Could I dismantle a biological system,

ئەرێ ئەز دێ شێم سیستەمەکێ بایولوجی پارچە پارچە کەم،

mix and match the parts

پارچەیان تێکهەل بکەم

and then put it back together in some new and creative way?

و پاشی ئەوانا جارەکا دی لێکبدەمە ڤە برێکەکا نوی و داهێنەرانە؟

My lab started working on this,

تاقیگەها من دەست بکارکرنێکر لسەر ڤێ چەندێ،

and I want to show you the result.

و من دڤێت ئەنجامان نیشا هەوە بدەم.

Can any of you guys tell me what fruit this is?

ئەرێ ئێک ژهەوە دشێت بێژیتە من کا ئەڤە چ جورە فێقییە؟

Audience: Apple!

بینەر: سێڤە!

Andrew Pelling: That's right -- it's an apple.

ئەندریو پێلینگ: ئەڤ چەندە ڕاستە ئەڤە سێڤەکە.

Now, I actually want you to notice as well

نوکە؛ من براستی ژهەوە دڤێت هوین بباشی تێبینییێ بکەن

that this is a lot redder than most apples.

کو ئەڤە گەلەک سورترە ژپترییا سێڤان.

And that's because we grew human cells into it.

و ئەڤە ژبەر وێ چەندێ یە کو مە خانێن مروڤان تێدا یێن مەزن کرین و چاندین.

We took a totally innocent Macintosh apple,

مە سێڤەکا بێ گونەهـ یا ماکونتاش ئینا،

removed all the apple cells and DNA

و هەمی خانە و [دی ئێن ئەی] یێ سێڤێ ژێ برن

and then implanted human cells.

و پاشی خانێن مروڤی تێدا چاندن.

And what we're left with after removing all the apple cells

و بومە چ ما پشتی مە هەمی خانێن سێڤێ ژێبرین و ڕاکرین

is this cellulose scaffold.

ئەڤ قالبێ سلیولوزییە.

This is the stuff that gives plants their shape and texture.

ئەڤە ئەو تشتە یێ شکلی و سەروبەری ددەتە ڕووەکان و شێوەیێ وان دیار دکەت.

And these little holes that you can see,

و ئەڤ کونێن بچویک یێن تو دبینی،

this is where all the apple cells used to be.

ئەها هەمی خانێن سێڤێ لڤارا بین بەری ئەم ژێببەین.

So then we come along,

ڤێجا پاشی ئەم هاتین،

we implant some mammalian cells that you can see in blue.

مە هندەک خانێن شیردەران چاندن ئەوێن تو دبینی برەنگێ شین.

What happens is, these guys start multiplying

ئەوا ڕوویددەت ئەڤەیە کو، ئەڤ خانە دەست پێدکەن کو دابەشببن

and they fill up this entire scaffold.

و ئەو ڤی قالبی هەمییێ تژی دکەن.

As weird as this is,

کا چەند غەریب دیار دکەت،

it's actually really reminiscent of how our own tissues are organized.

ئەڤ چەندە براستیژی گەلەک لسەر وێ چەندێ ڤە دچیت کا چەوا شانەیێن مە بخوە هاتینە ڕێکخستن.

And we found in our pre-clinical work

و ئەم دکارێ خوە یێ بەری کلینیکی دا دبینین

that you can implant these scaffolds into the body,

کو تو دشێی ڤان قالبان دلەشی دا بچینی،

and the body will send in cells and a blood supply

و لەش دێ خانەیان و خوینێ بەرەف ڤی قالبی ڤە فرێکەت

and actually keep these things alive.

و دێ وەکەت کو ڤان تشتان بهێلیتە ساخ.

This is the point when people started asking me,

ئەها ئەڤەیە مەرەم دەمێ خەلکی دەستپێکری و پرسیارا من دکر،

"Andrew, can you make body parts out of apples?"

"ئەندریو، ئەرێ تو دشێی پارچێن لەشی دروست بکەی ژسێڤان؟"

And I'm like, "You've come to the right place."

و ئەز هوسا بەرسڤێ ددەم، "تو یێ هاتییە جهەکێ دروست."

(Laughter)

I actually brought this up with my wife.

براستیژی من ئەڤ چەندە لسەر هەڤژینا خوە ئینا.

She's a musical instrument maker,

ئەو دروستکەرا کەلوپەلێن میوزیکییە،

and she does a lot of wood carving for a living.

و ئەو گەلەک کارێ کولینا داری دکەت داکو ژیانا خوە ببەتە سەری.

So I asked her,

ڤێجا من پرسیارا وێ کر،

"Could you, like, literally carve some ears

"ئەرێ تو دێ شێی، کو، براستیژی شێوەییێ گوهەکی بکولی

out of an apple for us?"

دناڤ سێڤەکێ دا بو مە؟"

And she did.

و ئەوێ ئەڤ چەندە ئەنجام دا.

So I took her ears to the lab.

ژبەر ڤێ چەندێ من گوهێ وێ برە تاقیگەهێ.

We then started preparing them.

و پاشی مە دەستپێکر وان ئامادە بکەین.

Yeah, I know.

ئەرێ، ئەز دزانم.

(Laughter)

It's a good lab, man.

ئەڤە تاقیگەهەکا لاوە، زەلام.

(Laughter)

And then we grew cells on them.

و پاشی مە خانە لسەر وان مەزن کرن و چاندن.

And this is the result.

و ئەڤە ئەنجامە.

Listen, my lab is not in the ear-manufacturing business.

گوهێ خوە بدەنێ، تاقیگەها من نە دکارێ بەرهەمئینانا گوهان دایە.

People have actually been working on this for decades.

بۆ ماوێ دەهـ سالەکانە خەلک یێ لسەر ڤێ چەندێ کار دکەن.

Here's the issue:

ئەها بابەت ئەڤەیە:

commercial scaffolds can be really expensive and problematic,

قالبێن بازرگانی دشێن گەلەک دگرانبن و ئاریشەیە بو گەلەکان،

because they're sourced from proprietary products,

ژبەرکو ئەو ژ ژێدەرێن بخودان دهێن،

animals or cadavers.

گیانەوەران یان لەشێن مری.

We used an apple and it cost pennies.

مە سێڤەک بکار ئینا و چەند سەنتەک بتنێ لـێ چوون.

What's also really cool here

ئەوا گەلەک جوان لڤێرێ ئەوە کو

is it's not that hard to make these things.

ئەڤ چەندە نەهند یا ب زەحمەتە داکو ڤان تشتان دروست بکەی.

The equipment you need can be built from garbage,

کەلوپەلێن کو تو پێتڤی دبییێ دشێن بهێنە ئاڤاکرن ژگلێشی،

and the key processing step only requires soap and water.

و پێنگاڤا سەرەکی یا پروسێسا ڤی کاری بتنێ پێتڤی بسابین و ئاڤێیە.

So what we did was put all the instructions online as open source.

ڤێجا ئەوا مە ئەنجامدای ئەوە کو مە هەمی

ڕێک و پێنگاڤ یێن کرینە دئەنتێرنێتێ دا هەروەک ژێدەرەکێ ڤەکری.

And then we founded a mission-driven company,

و پاشی مە کومپانییەکا لدویڤ کاران دگەریت دیت،

and we're developing kits to make it easier

و ئەم ئامیرێن پێتڤی پێشڤەدبین داکو ڤێ چەندێ بسانەهی تر لـێ بکەین

for anyone with a sink and a soldering iron

بو هەرکەسەکێ کو دەست شویەک و کەوی یەکێ لەحیمێ هەبیت

to make these things at home.

دشێت ڤان تشتان لمال دروست بکەت.

What I'm really curious about is if one day,

ئەوا کو گەلەک بومن بییە مەرەق ئەوە کو ئەگەر ڕۆژەکێ،

it will be possible to repair, rebuild and augment our own bodies

کو دێ دشیان دا بیت کو بشێین تشتەکێ زێدە ژلەشێ خوە بخوە

نویژەن بکەین، یان دووبارە ئاڤا بکەینە ڤە

with stuff we make in the kitchen.

بوان کەلوپەلێن ئەم دلێنانگەهان ڤە دروست دکەین،

Speaking of kitchens,

ئاخفتن دەربارەی لێنانگەهێ،

here's some asparagus.

ئەڤە هندەک قیڤارن.

They're tasty, and they make your pee smell funny.

ئەو بتامن، و ئەو وەل میزا تە دکەن کو بێهنەکا بکەنی ژێ بهێت.

(Laughter)

(کەنی)

Now, I was in my kitchen, and I was noticing

نوکە؛ ئەز د لێنانگەها خوەڤە بیم، و من تێبینی دکر

that when you look down the stalks of these asparagus,

کو دەمێ تو بەرێ خوە ددەیە دەستکێن ڤان قیڤاران،

what you can see are all these tiny little vessels.

ئەوا تو دشێی ببینی ئەوە کو ئەو هەمی بورییێن بچویکن.

And when we image them in the lab,

و دەمێ ئەم وان دئینینە پێشچاڤێن خوە دتاقیگەهێ ڤە،

you can see how the cellulose forms these structures.

تو دبینی کا چاوا سلیولوز ڤان پێکهاتەیان دروست دکەت

This image reminds me of two things:

ئەڤ وێنەیە بیرا من ل دوو تشتان دئینیت:

our blood vessels

بورییێن مە یێن خوینێ

and the structure and organization of our nerves and spinal cord.

و پێکهاتە و ڕێکخستنا دەمار و ئەو مێشكێ دبربرا پشتێ ڕا دچیت.

So here's the question:

ڤێجا ئەها ئەڤەیە پرسیار:

Can we grow axons and neurons down these channels?

ئەرێ ئەم دێ شێن ئەکسون و نیورونان دڤان کەنالان دا دروست کەین؟

Because if we can,

ژبەرکو ئەگەر ئەم بشێین،

then maybe we can use asparagus to form new connections

لوی دەمی دبیت ئەم بشێین قیڤارا بکاربینین داکو پەیوەندییێن نوی دروست بکەین

between the ends of damaged and severed nerves.

دناڤبەرا دوو دەمارێن کو خراب بووین یان توشی ئاریشا بووین.

Or maybe even a spinal cord.

یان هەتا دبیت ئەو مێشكێ دناڤ بربرا پشتێ ژی ڕا دچیت.

Don't get me wrong --

خەلەت دمن نەگەهن --

this is exceptionally challenging

ئەڤ چەندە تشتەکێ تژییە ژهەڤرکییێ

and really hard work to do,

و کارەکێ گەلەک بزەحمەتە کو بهێتە ئەنجام دان،

and we are not the only ones working on this.

و ئەم نە ئێکەمینین کو کار لسەر ڤێ چەندێ دکەین.

But we are the only ones using asparagus.

بەلـێ ئەم ئێکەمینین کو قیڤارا بکار دئینین.

Right now, we've got really promising pilot data.

نوکە، مە گەلەک زانیارییێن کارەکی یێن خودان پەیمان یێن هەین.

And we're working with tissue engineers

و ئەم یێ دگەل ئەندازیارێن شانەیان کار دکەین

and neurosurgeons

و نشتەگەرێن دەماران

to find out what's actually possible.

So listen, all of the work I've shown you,

ڤێجا گوهـێ خوە بدەنە من، هەمی ئەو کارێ من نیشا هەوە دای،

the stuff that I've built that's all around me on this stage

ئەو تشتێن من ئاڤا کرین ئەو هەمی تشتێن لدەوروبەرێ من لسەر ڤی دەپێ شانویێ

and the other projects my lab is involved in

و پروژەیێن دی یێن تاقیگەها من تێدا بەشداری کری

are all a direct result of me playing with your garbage.

هەمی ئەنجامەکێ ڕاستەوخویە ژ ئەگەرێ وێ چەندێ کو ئەز خوە بگلێشێ هەوە ڤە مژویل دکەم.

Play -- play is a key part of my scientific practice.

It's how I train my mind to be unconventional and to be creative

and to decide to make human apple ears.
