I was born and raised in North Korea.

Although my family constantly struggled against poverty,

I was always loved and cared for first,

because I was the only son

and the youngest of two in the family.

But then the great famine began in 1994.

I was four years old.

My sister and I would go searching for firewood

누나와 저는 새벽 다섯 시부터

starting at 5 in the morning

땔깜을 찾아다녔고

and come back after midnight.

자정이 넘어서 돌아오고는 했습니다.

I would wander the streets searching for food,

음식을 찾아 길거리를 헤매고는 했는데,

and I remember seeing a small child

한 번은 엄마 등에 업힌 아기가

tied to a mother's back eating chips,

과자를 먹고 있었습니다.

and wanting to steal them from him.

그걸 훔쳐 먹고 싶다는 생각을 한 적이 있었어요.

Hunger is humiliation. Hunger is hopelessness.

굶주림은 모욕입니다. 굶주림은 절망입니다.

For a hungry child, politics and freedom

배고픈 아이는 정치와 자유는

are not even thought of.

생각조차 할 수 없습니다.

On my ninth birthday, my parents

아홉 번째 생일에 부모님은

couldn't give me any food to eat.

제게 아무런 음식도 주지 못하셨습니다.

But even as a child, I could feel the heaviness

당시 저는 아이였지만, 부모님 마음이

in their hearts.

얼마나 무거웠는지 느낄 수 있었어요.

Over a million North Koreans died of starvation in that time,

그 시기에 100만 명 이상의 북한주민이 아사했습니다.

and in 2003, when I was 13 years old,

그리고 2003년, 제가 13살 되던 해,

my father became one of them.

제 아버지도 같은 운명을 맞이하셨습니다.

I saw my father wither away and die.

아버지가 말라가고 결국에는 돌아가시는 모습을 지켜봤어요.

In the same year, my mother disappeared one day,

같은 해의 어느 날, 어머니가 갑자기 사라지셨고

and then my sister told me

누나는 저에게

that she was going to China to earn money,

돈을 벌러 중국에 가는데

but that she would return with money and food soon.

돈과 음식을 가지고 곧 돌아오겠다고 했습니다.

Since we had never been separated,

우리는 떨어져 지낸 적이 없었고

and I thought we would be together forever,

영원히 함께 있을 거라고 생각했었기 때문에

I didn't even give her a hug when she left.

누나가 떠날 때 안아주지도 않았어요.

It was the biggest mistake I have ever made in my life.

그건 제 생애 최대의 실수였습니다.

But again, I didn't know

그렇지만 당시만 하더라도,

it was going to be a long goodbye.

이렇게 오래 헤어질 줄 몰랐었어요.

I have not seen my mom or my sister since then.

그 이후, 저는 어머니나 누나를 본 적이 없어요.

Suddenly, I became an orphan and homeless.

순식간에 저는 집 없는 고아가 되어버렸습니다.

My daily life became very hard,

일상은 아주 힘들어졌지만

but very simple.

동시에 매우 단순해졌어요.

My goal was to find a dusty piece of bread in the trash.

쓰레기통에서 먼지 투성이의 빵조각을 찾는 게 목표가 되었죠.

But that is no way to survive.

하지만 그렇게 해서는 살아남을 수 없었습니다.

I started to realize, begging would not be the solution.

구걸 또한 해결책이 될 수 없다는 사실을 깨달으면서,

So I started to steal from food carts in illegal markets.

암시장의 식품 수레에서 훔치기 시작했습니다.

Sometimes, I found small jobs

때로는 소일거리를 해주는 대신

in exchange for food.

음식을 받기도 했습니다.

Once, I even spent two months in the winter

한 번은 겨울에 두 달동안

working in a coal mine,

탄광에서 일을 했는데,

33 meters underground without any protection

아무런 보호장비 없이 지하 33미터 되는 곳에서

for up to 16 hours a day.

하루 최대 16시간씩 일을 하기도 했죠.

I was not uncommon.

하지만 제가 특별한 건 아니었어요.

Many other orphans survived this way, or worse.

많은 다른 고아들도 이런, 혹은 이보다 더한 방식으로 살아남았습니다.

When I could not fall asleep from bitter cold

너무 춥거나 배가 고파

or hunger pains,

잠을 이룰 수 없는 밤에는

I hoped that, the next morning,

다음 날 아침에

my sister would come back to wake me up

누나가 돌아와 저를 깨우며

with my favorite food.

가장 좋아하는 음식을 가져오기를 바랐습니다.

That hope kept me alive.

그런 희망이 저를 살렸습니다.

I don't mean big, grand hope.

큰, 거창한 희망이 아니라

I mean the kind of hope that made me believe

제가 말하는 희망은 다음 쓰레기통에는

that the next trash can had bread,

빵이 있을 거라는 믿음을 준 희망입니다.

even though it usually didn't.

빵이 없는 경우가 대부분이라 하더라도요.

But if I didn't believe it, I wouldn't even try,

하지만 그런 믿음 없이는 시도조차 하지 않았을테고

and then I would die.

그러면 저는 죽고 말았겠죠.

Hope kept me alive.

희망이 저를 살렸습니다.

Every day, I told myself,

저는 매일같이 다짐했습니다.

no matter how hard things got,

삶이 아무리 힘들어질지라도

still I must live.

'나는 살아야한다'고요.

After three years of waiting for my sister's return,

누나가 돌아오기를 3년이나 기다린 끝에

I decided to go to China to look for her myself.

중국에 직접 가서 찾아보기로 했습니다.

I realized

왜냐하면, 이런 방식으로는

I couldn't survive much longer this way.

오랜 못 갈 거라는 사실을 깨달았기 때문이죠.

I knew the journey would be risky,

가는 길이 위험할 줄 알았지만

but I would be risking my life either way.

어떤 선택을 하든 목숨이 위태롭기는 마찬가지였어요.

I could die of starvation like my father in North Korea,

북한에서 아버지처럼 굶어죽거나,

or at least I could try for a better life

아니면 중국으로 탈출해서

by escaping to China.

더 나은 삶을 찾아보는 방법이 있었습니다.

I had learned that many people tried to cross

많은 사람들이 발각되지 않기 위해

the border to China in the nighttime to avoid being seen.

중국 국경을 넘기 위한 시도를 밤에 한다는 것을 알고 있었습니다.

North Korean border guards often shoot and kill people

북한 국경 경비대는 허가 없이 국경을 넘으려는 사람들을

trying to cross the border without permission.

종종 쏘아 죽이고는 합니다.

Chinese soldiers will catch

중국 공안은 탈북자들을 잡아

and send back North Koreans,

송환하고,

where they face severe punishment.

그런 탈북자들은 무거운 처벌을 받습니다.

I decided to cross during the day,

저는 대낮에 국경을 넘기로 결심했습니다.

first because I was still a kid and scared of the dark,

이유는 첫째, 그 때는 어려서 아직 어두운 게 무서웠고,

second because I knew I was already taking a risk,

둘째는 어차피 위험을 감수하는데

and since not many people tried to cross during the day,

낮에 국경을 넘는 사람들이 많지 않으니까

I thought I might be able to cross

사람들 눈에 띄지 않고

without being seen by anyone.

탈북할 수 있을 거라는 생각에서였습니다.

I made it to China on February 15, 2006.

저는 2006년 2월 15일에 중국 땅을 밟았습니다.

I was 16 years old.

당시 16살이었죠.

I thought things in China would be easier,

중국에 가면 상황이 나아질 거라고 생각했어요.

since there was more food.

일단은 먹을거리가 더 많았으니까요.

I thought more people would help me.

더 많은 사람들이 저를 도와줄거라 생각했었습니다.

But it was harder than living in North Korea,

그렇지만 삶은 북한에서보다 더 어려웠습니다.

because I was not free.

자유롭지 않았기 때문에요.

I was always worried about being caught

혹시 잡혀서 북한에 돌려보내질까

and sent back.

항상 초조했습니다.

By a miracle, some months later,

하지만 몇 달 후, 기적처럼

I met someone who was running

탈북자들을 위해

an underground shelter for North Koreans,

비밀 보호소를 운영하는 사람을 만나

and was allowed to live there

그곳에서 살면서 수 년만에 처음으로

and eat regular meals for the first time in many years.

정기적으로 식사를 할 수 있었습니다.

Later that year, an activist helped me escape China

그리고 그 해 말, 한 활동가의 도움으로

and go to the United States as a refugee.

중국을 탈출해 난민 자격으로 미국에 오게 되었어요.

I went to America without knowing a word of English,

영어 한 마디도 못하는 채로 미국에 왔지만

yet my social worker told me that I had to go to high school.

제 사회복지사는 제가 고등학교에 가야한다고 했어요.

Even in North Korea, I was an F student.

사실 북한에서도 저는 늘 꼴찌 학생이었습니다.

(Laughter)

And I barely finished elementary school.

초등학교도 간신히 마친데다가,

And I remember I fought in school more than once a day.

하루에 한 번 싸움질을 했어요.

Textbooks and the library were not my playground.

저는 교과서와 도서관 체질이 아니었죠.

My father tried very hard to motivate me into studying,

아버지께서는 공부를 열심히 하도록 여러 수를 쓰셨지만

but it didn't work.

아무런 효과가 없었습니다.

At one point, my father gave up on me.

그리고 어느 순간 포기하셨습니다.

He said, "You're not my son anymore."

"넌 더 이상 내 아들이 아니다" 라고 하셨어요.

I was only 11 or 12, but it hurt me deeply.

11살인가 12살 밖에 안됬었지만 큰 상처를 받았습니다.

But nevertheless, my level of motivation

그렇지만 아버지께서 돌아가실 때까지도

still didn't change before he died.

공부에 대한 동기는 별반 달라지지 않았어요.

So in America, it was kind of ridiculous

그래서 미국까지 와서 고등학교에 가야한다는 사실이

that they said I should go to high school.

말도 안된다고 생각했죠.

I didn't even go to middle school.

중학교도 안 다녔는데 말이에요.

I decided to go, just because they told me to,

결국 가야한다고 하니까 가기는 했는데

without trying much.

별로 열심히 다니지는 않았아요.

But one day, I came home and my foster mother

하루는 집에 돌아왔는데 양어머니께서

had made chicken wings for dinner.

치킨윙 요리를 해주셨어요.

And during dinner, I wanted to have one more wing,

저녁 식사 중에 날개를 하나 더 먹고 싶었지만,

but I realized there were not enough for everyone,

다른 사람들이 더 못 먹을까봐

so I decided against it.

안 먹기로 했습니다.

When I looked down at my plate,

그런데 제 접시를 보니

I saw the last chicken wing, that my foster father had given me his.

양아버지께서 자신의 것을 갖다놓으신 겁니다.

I was so happy.

정말 행복했어요.

I looked at him sitting next to me.

양아버지께서 제 옆에 앉아 계셨는데

He just looked back at me very warmly,

아무런 말씀도 하시지 않았지만

but said no words.

아주 따뜻한 눈길로 저를 바라보셨습니다.

Suddenly I remembered my biological father.

갑자기 저의 친아버지가 생각났어요.

My foster father's small act of love

양아버지의 작은 사랑의 행동이

reminded me of my father,

제 아버지를 생각나게 했습니다.

who would love to share his food with me

아버지는 아낌없이 제게 음식을 나눠주셨습니다.

when he was hungry, even if he was starving.

자신이 배고프고 굶주리실 때도 말이죠.

I felt so suffocated that I had so much food in America,

저는 미국에서 이렇게 많은 음식을 먹고 있는데 제 아버지께서는

yet my father died of starvation.

기아로 돌아가셨다는 사실에 숨이 막혔습니다.

My only wish that night was to cook a meal for him,

그날 밤, 제 유일한 소원은 아버지께 밥상을 차려드리는 것이었어요.

and that night I also thought of what else I could do

또한 저는 아버지를 기릴 수 있는 또 다른 방법이 있을지

to honor him.

궁리해 보았습니다.

And my answer was to promise to myself

그래서 다다른 결론은

that I would study hard and get the best education

공부를 열심히 해서 미국에서 받을 수 있는 최고의 교육을 받아

in America to honor his sacrifice.

아버지의 희생을 헛되이 하지 않겠다는 것이었어요.

I took school seriously,

학교를 열심히 다니기 시작했고

and for the first time ever in my life,

생애 처음으로

I received an academic award for excellence,

성적 우수상을 받았습니다.

and made dean's list from the first semester in high school.

그리고 고등학교 첫 학기에 우등생 명단에 이름을 올리게 되었습니다.

That chicken wing changed my life.

그 치킨 날개 하나에 인생이 바뀐거죠.

(Laughter)

Hope is personal. Hope is something

희망은 개인적인 겁니다.

that no one can give to you.

희망이란 그 누구도 당신에게 줄 수 있는 것이 아닙니다.

You have to choose to believe in hope.

희망을 믿기로 스스로 결정을 내려야 해요.

You have to make it yourself.

스스로 일구어 나가야 하는 것입니다.

In North Korea, I made it myself.

북한에서는 혼자 살아남았지만,

Hope brought me to America.

미국까지 저를 데려온 것은 희망이었습니다.

But in America, I didn't know what to do,

하지만 막상 미국에 오니 뭘 해야할지 몰랐습니다.

because I had this overwhelming freedom.

너무 많은 자유가 주어졌기 때문이죠.

My foster father at that dinner gave me a direction,

그 저녁 식사 때 양아버지는 제게 방향을 제시해 주셨고,

and he motivated me and gave me a purpose

그와 함께 미국에서 살아야 할 동기와

to live in America.

목적을 부여해 주셨습니다.

I did not come here by myself.

저는 혼자의 힘으로 여기까지 온 것이 아닙니다.

I had hope, but hope by itself is not enough.

희망이 있었지만 희망만으로 되는 것도 아니었습니다.

Many people helped me along the way to get here.

여기까지 오는 데에 많은 분들의 도움을 받았습니다.

North Koreans are fighting hard to survive.

북한 사람들은 생존을 위해 치열하게 싸우고 있습니다.

They have to force themselves to survive,

생존을 스스로에게 강요해야 하고,

have hope to survive,

생존하기 위해 희망도 필요하지만

but they cannot make it without help.

도움 없이 혼자 해낼 수는 없습니다.

This is my message to you.

이것이 제가 여러분께 하고 싶은 말입니다.

Have hope for yourself,

스스로를 위해 희망을 가지면서도

but also help each other.

서로 도와주세요.

Life can be hard for everyone, wherever you live.

어디에 살든, 삶은 힘들 수 있습니다.

My foster father didn't intend to change my life.

양아버지는 제 삶을 바꾸려는 의도가 있었던 게 아니잖아요.

In the same way, you may also change someone's life

이처럼 여러분도 사랑에서 비롯된 작은 행동으로

with even the smallest act of love.

누군가의 삶을 바꿀 수 있습니다.

A piece of bread can satisfy your hunger,

빵 한 조각은 배고픔을 달랠 수 있고

and having the hope will bring you bread

희망을 가지면 목숨을 연명할

to keep you alive.

빵을 찾을 수는 있습니다.

But I confidently believe that

하지만 확신하건데,

your act of love and caring

여러분의 따뜻한 손길과 관심은

can also save another Joseph's life

또다른 조셉의 목숨을 살릴 수도 있고

and change thousands of other Josephs

생존을 위한 희망을 가지는 수천 명의

who are still having hope to survive.

또다른 조셉의 인생을 변화시킬 수도 있습니다.

I still haven't given up my hope to see you.

I will live my life happily

and study hard

행복하게 살면서

until I see you,

열심히 공부하고 있을게.

and I promise I will not cry again.
