There's a group of people in Kenya.

The Maasais, the boys are brought up to be warriors.

The girls are brought up to be mothers.

When I was five years old,

I found out that I was engaged

to be married as soon as I reached puberty.

My mother, my grandmother, my aunties,

they constantly reminded me that

And everything I had to do from that moment

was to prepare me to be a perfect woman at age 12.

My day started at 5 in the morning,

제 하루는 새벽 5시에 시작해

milking the cows, sweeping the house,

우유를 짜고, 집을 쓸고,

cooking for my siblings, collecting water, firewood.

동생들을 위해 요리하고, 물을 길어 오고, 나무를 주워오는 것이었습니다.

I did everything that I needed to do

현모양처가 되기 위한

to become a perfect wife.

모든 일을 했어요.

I went to school not because the Maasais'

제가 학교를 다닌 이유는, 모든 마사이족의 여자들이

women or girls were going to school.

학교를 가기 때문이 아니에요.

It's because my mother was denied an education,

어머니가 교육을 못 받으셨기 때문에 학교를 갔어요.

and she constantly reminded me and my siblings that

그리고 어머니는 저희에게 계속 이런 얘기를 하셨어요.

she never wanted us to live the life she was living.

내가 사는 삶을 너희는 살지 않았으면 한다고.

Why did she say that?

왜 그런 말을 하셨을까요?

My father worked as a policeman in the city.

저희 아버지는 도시에서 경찰로 일하셨어요.

He came home once a year.

아버지는 1년에 한 번 집에 오셨죠.

We didn't see him for sometimes even two years.

가끔씩 아버지를 2년 가까이 못 본 적도 있어요.

And whenever he came home, it was a different case.

그러나 아버지가 집에 오시면 일이 달라졌어요.

My mother worked hard in the farm

어머니는 저희가 먹고살 수 있도록

to grow crops so that we can eat.

힘들게 농사를 지으셨어요.

She reared the cows and the goats

어머니는 저희를 보살피기 위해

so that she can care for us.

소와 염소도 기르셨어요.

But when my father came, he would sell the cows,

하지만 아버지는 집에 오시면 소를 팔고,

he would sell the products we had,

집에 있는 농작물을 팔고,

and he went and drank with his friends in the bars.

술집에 가서 친구들과 술을 마셨어요.

Because my mother was a woman,

어머니는 여성이셨기에

she was not allowed to own any property,

재산을 가질 수 없었고,

and by default, everything in my family anyway

가족이 번 재산은 결국

belongs to my father, so he had the right.

아버지 소유였기 때문에 맘대로 할 권리가 있었어요.

And if my mother ever questioned him,

he beat her, abused her, and really it was difficult.

When I went to school, I had a dream.

I wanted to become a teacher.

Teachers looked nice.

They wear nice dresses, high-heeled shoes.

I found out later that they are uncomfortable, but I admired it.

But most of all, the teacher was just writing on the board --

not hard work, that's what I thought,

compared to what I was doing in the farm.

So I wanted to become a teacher.

I worked hard in school, but when I was in eighth grade,

it was a determining factor.

In our tradition, there is a ceremony

that girls have to undergo to become women,

and it's a rite of passage to womanhood.

And then I was just finishing my eighth grade,

and that was a transition for me to go to high school.

This was the crossroad.

Once I go through this tradition, I was going to become a wife.

Well, my dream of becoming a teacher will not come to pass.

So I talked -- I had to come up with a plan

to figure these things out.

I talked to my father. I did something that most girls have never done.

저는 아버지와 얘기를 나눴어요. 웬만한 여자 아이들은 한 번도 하지 않았던 일을 했지요.

I told my father, "I will only go through this ceremony

아버지에게 말했어요. "만약에 다시 학교로 돌아가게 해 주신다면,

if you let me go back to school."

이 의식을 치를게요."

The reason why, if I ran away,

이유는, 만약 제가 도망간다면,

my father will have a stigma, people will be calling him

제 아버지는 모욕을 당할 것이고, 사람들이

the father of that girl who didn't go through the ceremony.

It was a shameful thing for him to carry the rest of his life.

So he figured out. "Well," he said, "okay,

you'll go to school after the ceremony."

I did. The ceremony happened.

It's a whole week long of excitement.

It's a ceremony. People are enjoying it.

And the day before the actual ceremony happens,

we were dancing, having excitement,

and through all the night we did not sleep.

The actual day came, and we walked out of the house

We walked out to the courtyard, and there were a bunch of people waiting.

They were all in a circle.

And as we danced and danced,

and we approached this circle of women,

There was a woman sitting in the middle of it,

I was the first. There were my sisters and a couple of other girls,

and as I approached her,

she looked at me, and I sat down.

And I sat down, and I opened my legs.

As I opened my leg, another woman came,

and this woman was carrying a knife.

And as she carried the knife, she walked toward me

and she held the clitoris, and she cut it off.

As you can imagine, I bled. I bled.

After bleeding for a while, I fainted thereafter.

It's something that so many girls --

다행히 저는 죽지 않았지만,

I'm lucky, I never died -- but many die.

It's practiced, it's no anesthesia, it's a rusty old knife,

and it was difficult.

I was lucky because one, also, my mom did something

that most women don't do.

Three days later, after everybody has left the home,

my mom went and brought a nurse.

We were taken care of.

Three weeks later, I was healed, and I was back in high school.

3주 후 저는 다 나았고, 고등학교로 돌아갔어요.

I was so determined to be a teacher now

저는 이제 우리 가족에게 변화를 가져오기 위해

so that I could make a difference in my family.

선생님이 되겠다고 굳게 다짐한 상태였어요.

Well, while I was in high school, something happened.

그런데 고등학교 때 무슨 일이 일어났어요.

I met a young gentleman from our village

오리건 대학교(University of Oregon) 에 다녔던

who had been to the University of Oregon.

우리 마을 출신 청년을 만나게 된 거예요.

This man was wearing a white t-shirt, jeans, camera,

이 남자는 하얀 티셔츠에 청바지를 입고 카메라를 갖고 있었고,

white sneakers -- and I'm talking about white sneakers.

하얀 운동화를 신고 있었어요. 네, 맞아요. 하얀 운동화요.

There is something about clothes, I think, and shoes.

제 생각에 옷과 신발이 참 특별해 보였어요.

They were sneakers, and this is in a village

포장된 길도 없는 마을에

that doesn't even have paved roads. It was quite attractive.

운동화라니, 꽤나 매력적이었어요.

I told him, "Well, I want to go to where you are,"

그에게 말했지요. "저기, 저도 당신이 간 대학에 가고 싶어요."

because this man looked very happy, and I admired that.

왜냐하면 그는 행복해 보였고, 전 그걸 동경했거든요.

And he told me, "Well,

그리고 그는 말했어요. "음,

what do you mean, you want to go?

가고 싶다는 말이 무슨 뜻이야?

Don't you have a husband waiting for you?"

And I told him, "Don't worry about that part.

Just tell me how to get there."

This gentleman, he helped me.

While I was in high school also, my dad was sick.

He got a stroke, and he was really, really sick,

so he really couldn't tell me what to do next.

But the problem is, my father is not the only father I have.

그런데 문제는, 그 아버지가 저의 유일한 아버지는 아니라는 거에요.

Everybody who is my dad's age, male in the community,

우리 마을에서 아버지 또래 남자들은

is my father by default --

모두 결국에는 제 아버지가 되기 때문에

my uncles, all of them -- and they dictate what my future is.

삼촌이나 다른 남성들까지 나서서 제 장래가 어떻게 될지 결정을 내려요.

So the news came, I applied to school

저는 대학에 지원했고,

and I was accepted to Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, Virginia,

버지니아 린치버그에 있는 랜돌프-메이컨 여대에 합격했지만,

and I couldn't come without the support of the village,

비행기표를 사야 했기 때문에

because I needed to raise money to buy the air ticket.

마을 사람들의 도움 없이는 갈 수 없었어요.

I got a scholarship but I needed to get myself here.

장학금을 받긴 했지만 일단 여기까지 오려면 돈이 필요했고,

But I needed the support of the village,

그러자면 마을 사람들의 도움이 필요했죠.

and here again, when the men heard,

남자들과 마을 사람들이

and the people heard that a woman had gotten an opportunity to go to school,

여자가 학교에 갈 기회를 얻었다는 소릴 듣자,

they said, "What a lost opportunity.

또다시 "이렇게 기회가 날아가는구나.

This should have been given to a boy. We can't do this."

남자 아이에게 이 기회가 돌아갔어야 하는 건데. 이러면 안 되지." 라더군요.

So I went back and I had to go back to the tradition.

저는 돌아가서 전통을 따를 수밖에 없었어요.

There's a belief among our people

마사이족에서는

that morning brings good news.

아침이 좋은 소식을 가져온다고 믿어요.

So I had to come up with something to do with the morning,

그래서 전 뭔가 아침과 관련된 계획을 세워야 했어요.

because there's good news in the morning.

아침은 좋은 소식을 가져오니까요.

And in the village also, there is one chief, an elder,

마을에는 족장 어르신이 계셨는데,

who if he says yes, everybody will follow him.

어르신이 좋다고 하면 다들 그 말을 따르지요.

So I went to him very early in the morning, as the sun rose.

그래서 전 이른 아침, 동틀녘에 그분을 찾아갔어요.

The first thing he sees when he opens his door is, it's me.

아침에 문을 열자마자 저를 보셨지요.

"My child, what are you doing here?"

"얘야, 여기서 뭐 하는 거냐?"

"Well, Dad, I need help. Can you support me to go to America?"

"아버지, 도와 주세요. 미국에 가도록 지원해 주실 수 있나요?"

I promised him that I would be the best girl,

저는 정말 공부 열심히 하겠다고,

I will come back, anything they wanted after that,

나중에 돌아와서 사람들이 원하는 건 무엇이든

I will do it for them.

꼭 하겠노라고 다짐했어요.

He said, "Well, but I can't do it alone."

그러자 말씀하셨죠. "글쎄다, 나 혼자는 할 수 없는 일이잖니."

He gave me a list of another 15 men that I went --

족장님이 말해 주신 열다섯 명의 남자 어른들을

16 more men -- every single morning

아니, 16명을 매일 아침마다

I went and visited them.

찾아가서 만나뵈었어요.

They all came together.

결국 다들 동의했지요.

The village, the women, the men, everybody came together

여자들, 남자들, 마을 모두가 합심해서

to support me to come to get an education.

제가 미국에서 교육받을 수 있도록 후원해 줬어요.

I arrived in America. As you can imagine, what did I find?

저는 미국에 도착했습니다. 자, 제가 뭘 발견했을까요?

I found snow!

눈이요!

I found Wal-Marts, vacuum cleaners,

월마트, 진공 청소기,

and lots of food in the cafeteria.

학생 식당에 쌓인 음식도 발견했어요.

I was in a land of plenty.

유토피아에 온 거죠.

I enjoyed myself, but during that moment while I was here,

즐거웠어요. 하지만 여기에 있는 동안

I discovered a lot of things.

여러 가지를 깨닫게 되었어요.

I learned that that ceremony that I went through

13살 때 치뤘던 의식이

when I was 13 years old, it was called female genital mutilation.

할례라고 불리며

I learned that it was against the law in Kenya.

케냐 법에 어긋나는 일이라는 걸 배웠습니다.

I learned that I did not have to trade part of my body

교육을 받기 위해 신체 일부를 내걸지 않아도

to get an education. I had a right.

된다는 것도 배웠습니다. 저에겐 권리가 있었어요.

And as we speak right now, three million girls

그리고 지금 이 순간에도 3백만 명의

in Africa are at risk of going through this mutilation.

아프리카 소녀들이 할례를 당할 위험에 처해 있습니다.

I learned that my mom had a right to own property.

어머니께도 재산을 소유할 권리가 있다는 것을 배웠고,

I learned that she did not have to be abused

여자라는 이유로 폭행당하지 않아도

because she is a woman.

Those things made me angry.

I wanted to do something.

뭔가 하고 싶었습니다.

As I went back, every time I went,

매번 고향에 돌아갈 때마다

I found that my neighbors' girls were getting married.

이웃 딸들이 결혼하는 걸 보았어요.

They were getting mutilated, and here,

할례 의식도 계속 행해지고 있었죠.

after I graduated from here, I worked at the U.N.,

저는 여기서 졸업하고 유엔에서 일하고

I went back to school to get my graduate work,

대학원에 진학해 교육을 받는 동안에도

the constant cry of these girls was in my face.

이 아이들의 계속되는 비명 소리를 지울 수 없었습니다.

I had to do something.

뭐라도 해야 했어요.

As I went back, I started talking to the men,

저는 고향에 가서 대화를 시작했습니다.

to the village, and mothers, and I said,

남자들, 마을, 어머니들에게 이야기했어요.

"I want to give back the way I had promised you

"제가 돌아와서 여러분을 돕겠다고 한 약속을

that I would come back and help you. What do you need?"

지키고 싶습니다. 무엇이 필요한가요?"

As I spoke to the women, they told me,

여자들이 말하더군요.

"You know what we need? We really need a school for girls."

"필요한 거요? 여자 아이들은 학교가 시급해요."

Because there had not been any school for girls.

여자를 위한 학교는 하나도 없었거든요.

And the reason they wanted the school for girls

이들이 여학교를 원한 이유는

is because when a girl is raped when she's walking to school,

여자 아이가 학교로 걸어가다 성폭행을 당하면

the mother is blamed for that.

어머니 책임으로 몰아가기 때문입니다.

If she got pregnant before she got married,

아이가 결혼 전에 임신하게 되면

the mother is blamed for that, and she's punished.

그 어머니 탓으로 돌리고 벌을 내립니다.

She's beaten.

구타당하는 것입니다.

They said, "We wanted to put our girls in a safe place."

"우리 딸들을 안전한 곳에 보내고 싶어요."

As we moved, and I went to talk to the fathers,

이제 아버지들에게 이야기하러 갔지요.

the fathers, of course, you can imagine what they said:

아버지들은 뭐라고 했을지 짐작이 가실 거에요.

"We want a school for boys."

"남학교가 있었으면 좋겠네."

And I said, "Well, there are a couple of men from my village

전 대답했어요. "우리 마을 남자들 몇이

who have been out and they have gotten an education.

바깥에서 교육을 받고 왔잖아요.

Why can't they build a school for boys,

그네들이 남학교를 세우고

and I'll build a school for girls?"

제가 여학교를 세우면 어떨까요?"

That made sense. And they agreed.

말이 되죠. 그들도 동의했어요.

And I told them, I wanted them to show me a sign of commitment.

전 약속을 지키겠다는 표시를 해 줬으면 좋겠다고 했고,

And they did. They donated land where we built the girls' school.

I want you to meet one of the girls in that school.

Angeline came to apply for the school,

and she did not meet any criteria that we had.

She's an orphan. Yes, we could have taken her for that.

But she was older. She was 12 years old,

and we were taking girls who were in fourth grade.

우린 4학년 아이들을 받고 있었거든요.

Angeline had been moving from one place --

앤젤린은 여기저기 옮겨다니고 있었어요.

because she's an orphan, she has no mother, she has no father --

어머니, 아버지가 안 계신 고아이기 때문에

moving from one grandmother's house to another one,

이 할머니 댁에서 저 할머니 댁으로,

from aunties to aunties. She had no stability in her life.

이 이모네서 저 이모네로 떠돌아다녔죠. 안정된 생활이 아니었어요.

And I looked at her, I remember that day,

그 날을 기억하고 있어요. 앤젤린을 보자

and I saw something beyond what I was seeing in Angeline.

당장 눈에 보이는 것 이상의 무언가가 보이더군요.

And yes, she was older to be in fourth grade.

물론 4학년이 되기엔 많은 나이었지만

We gave her the opportunity to come to the class.

수업을 들을 기회를 주었습니다.

Five months later, that is Angeline.

5개월 후 앤젤린의 모습이에요.

A transformation had begun in her life.

이 아이 삶에 변화가 시작되었어요.

Angeline wants to be a pilot so she can fly around the world

앤젤린은 파일럿이 되어 세계를 날아다니고

and make a difference.

변화를 만들고 싶어해요.

She was not the top student when we took her.

처음 입학했을 때는 우등생이 아니었지만

Now she's the best student, not just in our school,

이제는 우리 학교뿐 아니라

but in the entire division that we are in.

That's Sharon. That's five years later.

As we speak right now, 125 girls will never be mutilated.

지금 현재 125명의 소녀들이 평생 할례를 당하지 않을 것입니다.

One hundred twenty-five girls will not be married when they're 12 years old.

125명의 소녀들이 12살의 나이에 결혼하지 않을 것입니다.

One hundred twenty-five girls are creating and achieving their dreams.

125명의 소녀들이 꿈을 만들고 또 이루어 가고 있습니다.

This is the thing that we are doing,

이게 우리가 하고 있는 일이에요.

giving them opportunities where they can rise.

아이들에게 떠오를 기회를 주는 것.

As we speak right now, women are not being beaten

지금 이 순간에도 우리 마을에서 시작한 변혁 덕분에

because of the revolutions we've started in our community.

여자들이 구타를 당하지 않고 있습니다.
