Human beings start putting each other into boxes

I get it.

We are neurologically hardwired

to seek out people like ourselves.

We start forming cliques as soon as we're old enough

to know what acceptance feels like.

We bond together based on anything that we can --

We seek out environments that reinforce our personal choices.

Sometimes, though, just the question "what do you do?"

can feel like somebody's opening a tiny little box

and asking you to squeeze yourself inside of it.

Because the categories, I've found, are too limiting.

The boxes are too narrow.

And this can get really dangerous.

So here's a disclaimer about me, though,

before we get too deep into this.

I grew up in a very sheltered environment.

I was raised in downtown Manhattan in the early 1980s,

two blocks from the epicenter of punk music.

I was shielded from the pains of bigotry

It was an unorthodox upbringing,

So when I was six, I decided that I wanted to be a boy.

I went to school one day and the kids wouldn't let me play basketball with them.

They said they wouldn't let girls play.

So I went home, and I shaved my head,

I mean, who knows, right?

When you're six, maybe you can do that.

I didn't want anyone to know that I was a girl, and they didn't.

I kept up the charade for eight years.

So this is me when I was 11.

I was playing a kid named Walter

in a movie called "Julian Po."

I was a little street tough that followed Christian Slater around and badgered him.

See, I was also a child actor,

which doubled up the layers of the performance of my identity,

because no one knew that I was actually a girl really playing a boy.

In fact, no one in my life knew that I was a girl --

not my teachers at school, not my friends,

친구들도, 감독들도

not the directors that I worked with.

제가 여자아이라는 것을 알지 못했습니다.

Kids would often come up to me in class

and grab me by the throat to check for an Adam's apple

목젖이 있는지 보기위해 목을 잡거나

or grab my crotch to check what I was working with.

제 '그것'이 있는지 보려고 가랑이를 잡기도 했습니다.

When I would go to the bathroom, I would turn my shoes around in the stalls

화장실에 갈때면 전 서서 오줌누는 것처럼

so that it looked like I was peeing standing up.

보이기 위해 신발을 거꾸로 신곤 했습니다.

At sleepovers I would have panic attacks

친구 집에서 잘 때면 여자아이들에게

trying to break it to girls that they didn't want to kiss me

제게 키스하지 않는 것이 좋을 거라는 걸

without outing myself.

커밍아웃하지 않고 말하려고 아주 고생하기도 했습니다.

It's worth mentioning though

그렇지만 제가 제 몸이나 성기를 싫어하지 않았다는 점을

that I didn't hate my body or my genitalia.

알아주셨으면 합니다.

I didn't feel like I was in the wrong body.

전 제가 엉뚱한 몸을 가지고 태어났다고는 생각하지 않았습니다.

I felt like I was performing this elaborate act.

그보다는 우아한 연기를 하는 것 같았죠.

I wouldn't have qualified as transgender.

성전환자는 되지 못했을 것입니다.

If my family, though, had been the kind of people to believe in therapy,

they probably would have diagnosed me

as something like gender dysmorphic

and put me on hormones to stave off puberty.

But in my particular case,

I just woke up one day when I was 14,

and I decided that I wanted to be a girl again.

Puberty had hit, and I had no idea what being a girl meant,

When a kid behaves like I did,

they don't exactly have to come out, right?

No one is exactly shocked.

But I wasn't asked to define myself by my parents.

When I was 15, and I called my father

to tell him that I had fallen in love,

it was the last thing on either of our minds

to discuss what the consequences were

of the fact that my first love was a girl.

Three years later, when I fell in love with a man,

neither of my parents batted an eyelash either.

See, it's one of the great blessings of my very unorthodox childhood

was raising a lot of dust around this country.

And at the time, getting married wasn't really something

I spent a lot of time thinking about.

But I was struck by the fact that America,

a country with such a tarnished civil rights record,

could be repeating its mistakes so blatantly.

And I remember watching the discussion on television

and thinking how interesting it was

that the separation of church and state

was essentially drawing geographical boundaries throughout this country,

between places where people believed in it

And then, that this discussion was drawing geographical boundaries around me.

If this was a war with two disparate sides,

I, by default, fell on team gay,

because I certainly wasn't 100 percent straight.

At the time I was just beginning to emerge

from this eight-year personal identity crisis zigzag

that saw me go from being a boy

to the opposite extreme of this super skimpy,

to finally just a hesitant exploration of what I actually was,

a tomboyish girl

who liked both boys and girls depending on the person.

좋아한 보이시한 여자애라는 것이었습니다.

I had spent a year photographing this new generation of girls, much like myself,

who fell kind of between-the-lines --

girls who skateboarded but did it in lacy underwear,

girls who had boys' haircuts but wore girly nail polish,

girls who had eyeshadow to match their scraped knees,

girls who liked girls and boys who all liked boys and girls

who all hated being boxed in to anything.

어느 규격화된 상자 안에 갇히고 싶어하지 않은 소녀들을 촬영했습니다.

I loved these people, and I admired their freedom,

전 이런 사람들을 사랑했습니다. 이들의 자유 또한 사랑했고요.

but I watched as the world outside of our utopian bubble

하지만 우리 이상향의 거품 밖에서는

exploded into these raging debates

사람들이 분노에 폭발했고, 심지어 국영방송에서 우리들의 사랑을

where pundits started likening our love to bestiality on national television.

And this powerful awareness rolled in over me

that I was a minority, and in my own home country,

based on one facet of my character.

I was legally and indisputably a second-class citizen.

I was not an activist.

I wave no flags in my own life.

But I was plagued by this question:

How could anyone vote to strip the rights

of the vast variety of people that I knew

based on one element of their character?

How could they say that we as a group

were not deserving of equal rights as somebody else?

Were we even a group? What group?

And had these people ever even consciously met a victim of their discrimination?

Did they know who they were voting against and what the impact was?

And then it occurred to me,

perhaps if they could look into the eyes

of the people that they were casting into second-class citizenship

it might make it harder for them to do.

It might give them pause.

Obviously I couldn't get 20 million people to the same dinner party,

so I figured out a way where I could introduce them to each other photographically

without any artifice, without any lighting,

Because in a photograph you can examine a lion's whiskers

without the fear of him ripping your face off.

For me, photography is not just about exposing film,

it's about exposing the viewer

to something new, a place they haven't gone before,

Life magazine introduced generations of people

to distant, far-off cultures they never knew existed through pictures.

So I decided to make a series of very simple portraits,

And I basically decided to photograph anyone in this country

which, if you don't know, is a limitless number of people.

무한히 많은 사람들이란 뜻이죠.

So this was a very large undertaking,

and to do it we needed some help.

So I ran out in the freezing cold,

and I photographed every single person that I knew that I could get to

in February of about two years ago.

And I took those photographs, and I went to the HRC and I asked them for some help.

Self Evident Truths is a photographic record of LGBTQ America today.

My aim is to take a simple portrait

of anyone who's anything other than 100 percent straight

or feels like they fall in the LGBTQ spectrum in any way.

My goal is to show the humanity that exists in every one of us

through the simplicity of a face.

It's written in the Declaration of Independence.

We are failing as a nation

우리는 우리가 나라의 근간으로 여겨온 바로 그 가치를

to uphold the morals upon which we were founded.

There is no equality in the United States.

미국엔 평등이 없습니다.

It's when you don't have to think about it, simple as that.

The fight for equal rights is not just about gay marriage.

Today in 29 states, more than half of this country,

you can legally be fired just for your sexuality.

I've heard hundreds of people give the same answer:

So far we've shot 300 faces in New York City.

I challenge you to look into the faces of these people

and tell them that they deserve less than any other human being.

iO Tillett Wright: Absolutely nothing could have prepared us for what happened after that.

Almost 85,000 people watched that video,

and then they started emailing us from all over the country,

asking us to come to their towns and help them to show their faces.

And a lot more people wanted to show their faces than I had anticipated.

So I changed my immediate goal to 10,000 faces.

That video was made in the spring of 2011,

and as of today I have traveled to almost 20 cities

I know that this is a talk,

Because if a picture is worth a thousand words,

So after traveling and talking to people

in places like Oklahoma or small-town Texas,

we found evidence that the initial premise was dead on.

Visibility really is key.

Familiarity really is the gateway drug to empathy.

Once an issue pops up in your own backyard or amongst your own family,

you're far more likely to explore sympathy for it

or explore a new perspective on it.

Of course, in my travels I met people

who legally divorced their children for being other than straight,

but I also met people who were Southern Baptists

레즈비언인 그들의 자식을 위해 교회를 바꾼

who switched churches because their child was a lesbian.

Sparking empathy had become the backbone of Self Evident Truths.

But here's what I was starting to learn that was really interesting:

Self Evident Truths doesn't erase the differences between us.

In fact, on the contrary, it highlights them.

사실 오히려 그 간극을 더 눈에 띄게 하죠.

It presents, not just the complexities

오늘날엔, 복잡성이란 게

found in a procession of different human beings,

but the complexities found within each individual person.

각자 개개인의 안에서도 나타나죠.

It wasn't that we had too many boxes, it was that we had too few.

가치관의 상자가 너무 많은게 아니라, 너무 적은게 문제였던 거에요.

At some point I realized that my mission to photograph "gays" was inherently flawed,

어느 순간 전 '동성애자들'을 촬영한다는 저의 목표가 허점이 있음을 깨달았어요.

because there were a million different shades of gay.

왜냐면 동성애에는 백만 가지 다양한 측면들이 존재하니까요.

Here I was trying to help,

저는 상황을 개선시키려 했지만,

and I had perpetuated the very thing I had spent my life trying to avoid --

사실 제가 일생 동안 피하려고 했던 바로 그걸 제가 하고 있었던 거예요.

yet another box.

또 다른 편견의 상자요.

At some point I added a question to the release form

어느 순간 전 질문지에

that asked people to quantify themselves

1부터 100까지 숫자를 매겨 자신의 동성애적 기질을 재는

on a scale of one to 100 percent gay.

문제를 넣었어요.

And I watched so many existential crises unfold in front of me.

그리고 정말 수많은 실존주의적 문제들이 제 앞에 펼쳐지는 걸 지켜봤죠.

(Laughter)

People didn't know what to do

사람들은 그 전에 한 번도

because they had never been presented with the option before.

그런 질문을 받아 본 적이 없기에 당황했죠.

Can you quantify your openness?

당신의 개방적인 정도를 숫자로 나타낼 수 있나요?

Once they got over the shock, though,

하지만 일단 생각을 추스르고 나면

by and large people opted for somewhere between 70 to 95 percent

대부분 사람들은 70에서 95% 정도로 자기 자신을 측정합니다.

or the 3 to 20 percent marks.

혹은 3에서 20% 정도로요.

Of course, there were lots of people who opted for a 100 percent one or the other,

물론 자신이 동성애자든 이성애자든 100%라고 생각하신 분들도 많았어요.

but I found that a much larger proportion of people

그러나 대다수의 사람들은

identified as something that was much more nuanced.

그보다는 훨씬 미묘한 존재입니다.

I found that most people fall on a spectrum of what I have come to refer to as "Grey."

대다수의 사람들이 제가 정의하기로는 '회색' 인 부분에 속합니다.

Let me be clear though -- and this is very important --

여기서 확실히 해두죠. 이건 아주 중요해요.

in no way am I saying that preference doesn't exist.

전 절대, 어느 한쪽에 대한 선호성이 존재하지 않는다고 말하려는 게 아니에요.

And I am not even going to address the issue of choice versus biological imperative,

그리고 '선택 대 태생적 특성'의 문제에 대해서도 전혀 얘기할 생각이 없어요.

because if any of you happen to be of the belief

만일 여러분 중 누구라도 성적 기호란 것이

that sexual orientation is a choice,

선택의 문제라고만 생각하신다면,

I invite you to go out and try to be grey.

한번 회색이 되어 보시는 건 어때요.

I'll take your picture just for trying.

그냥 시도하시기만해도 당신 사진을 찍어 드릴 테니.

What I am saying though is that human beings are not one-dimensional.

제가 말하고 싶은 건 인간이란 단편적인 존재가 아니라는 거예요.

The most important thing to take from the percentage system is this:

숫자 측정 질문에서 가장 중요한 점은 바로 이겁니다.

If you have gay people over here

만일 동성애자들이 이쪽

and you have straight people over here,

이성애자들이 저쪽,

and while we recognize that most people identify

그리고 대부분의 사람들이 자신을

as somewhere closer to one binary or another,

어느 한쪽에 더욱 가까운 것으로 측정한다면,

there is this vast spectrum of people that exist in between.

그 양극 사이엔 정말 다양한 사람들이 있다는 거죠.

And the reality that this presents is a complicated one.

그리고 이게 바로 복잡한 부분입니다.

Because, for example, if you pass a law

왜냐면 만일 사장이 동성애적 행위를 근거로 직원을 해고할 수 있다는

that allows a boss to fire an employee for homosexual behavior,

법안이 통과된다면

where exactly do you draw the line?

그 행위의 범위가 어디까지죠?

Is it over here, by the people who have had one or two heterosexual experiences so far?

이성애적 경험을 지금껏 한두 번쯤 가져 본 사람들 쪽에 범위를 두나요?

Or is it over here

아니면

by the people who have only had one or two homosexual experiences thus far?

이성애적 경험을 여태 한두 번밖에 못 가져 본 사람들 쪽?

Where exactly does one become a second-class citizen?

어느 선에서 정확히 2류 시민이 되는 건가요?

Another interesting thing that I learned from my project and my travels

제 프로젝트와 여행에서 제가 배운 또다른 흥미로운 사실은

is just what a poor binding agent sexual orientation is.

성적 기호라는 게 사람을 분류하기엔 너무 빈약한 기준이라는 겁니다.

After traveling so much and meeting so many people,

그토록 많은 여행과 많은 만남들 후에 깨달은 건

let me tell you, there are just as many jerks and sweethearts

정말 LGBT커뮤니티 안에서도 수많은 찌질이들과 좋은 사람들

and Democrats and Republicans and jocks and queens

민주당과 공화당, 사내다운 학생들과 여성스러운 학생들

and every other polarization you can possibly think of

그리고 여러분이 생각할 수 있는 모든 양극이 존재합니다

within the LGBT community

as there are within the human race.

온 인류 집단에 존재하는 것만큼이나요.

Aside from the fact that we play with one legal hand tied behind our backs,

우리가 법적인 문제에 관해서라면 일단 불리하다는 건 제쳐두고서라도

and once you get past the shared narrative of prejudice and struggle,

일단 우리가 편견과 몸부림을 넘어서고 나면

just being other than straight

이성애자가 아닌 다른 존재라는 사실은

doesn't necessarily mean that we have anything in common.

실상 공통점을 갖고 있다는 게 아니라는 걸 알 거예요.

So in the endless proliferation of faces that Self Evident Truths is always becoming,

'자명한 진실'이 언제나 그렇듯 끊임없이 늘어가는 얼굴들이

as it hopefully appears across more and more platforms,

원하건대 더 많은 플랫폼들과

bus shelters, billboards, Facebook pages, screen savers,

버스 정류장, 게시판, 페이스북, 화면보호기 등에 나타나고

perhaps in watching this procession of humanity,

인류의 이 순간들을 지켜보게 되면

something interesting and useful will begin to happen.

뭔가 흥미롭고 유익한 일들이 벌어질 거예요.

Hopefully these categories, these binaries,

바라건대 이 범주, 이 양극들

these over-simplified boxes

이 지나치게 단순화된 편견의 박스들은

will begin to become useless and they'll begin to fall away.

쓸모없어지고 사라지기 시작할 거예요.

Because really, they describe nothing that we see

왜냐면 사실 그것들은 우리가 보는 어느 것도

and no one that we know and nothing that we are.

우리가 아는 누구도, 그 어느 것도 담아낼 수 없기 때문이에요.

What we see are human beings in all their multiplicity.

우리 앞에 있는 건 각각 다른 개개인의 사람들이에요.

And seeing them makes it harder to deny their humanity.

그리고 그들을 보며 그들의 인간성을 부인하기는 더욱 힘들어요.

At the very least I hope it makes it harder to deny their human rights.

아니면 최소한 그들의 기본 권리를 부정하게 되지는 않길 바래요.

So is it me particularly

그럼 저 개인이

that you would choose to deny the right to housing,

거주권을 부인당하고

the right to adopt children, the right to marriage,

입양권을 부인당하고, 결혼할 권리를 부인당하고

the freedom to shop here, live here, buy here?

쇼핑할 자유, 살아갈 자유를 부인당할 대상인가요?

Am I the one that you choose to disown

제가 자식으로서, 형제 자매로서, 부모로서

as your child or your brother or your sister or your mother or your father,

혹은 이웃으로서, 사촌으로서, 대통령으로서

your neighbor, your cousin, your uncle, the president,

여러분을 지킬 경찰관이나 소방관으로서

your police woman or the fireman?

기피당할 대상입니까?

It's too late.

너무 늦었어요.

Because I already am all of those things.

이미 저는 그 모든 이들이니까요.

We already are all of those things, and we always have been.

우린 이미 그 모든 것들이에요. 지금까지 그래왔어요.

So please don't greet us as strangers,

그러니 우리를 낯선 이로서 맞아들이지 마세요.

greet us as your fellow human beings, period.

여러분과 같은 인간으로 맞아 주세요.
