You may not realize this,

that today we can program these bacteria like we program computers.

Now, the diagram that you see here,

I know it looks like some kind of sports play,

but it is actually a blueprint of the first bacterial program I developed.

And like writing software, we can print and write DNA

소프트웨어를 만드는 것처럼 DNA도 만들고 출력할 수 있습니다.

into different algorithms and programs inside of bacteria.

박테리아 안의 각기 다른 알고리즘과 프로그램으로 말이죠.

What this program does is produces fluorescent proteins

이 프로그램이 하는 일은 형광단백질을 리듬에 맞춘 방식으로 생성해서

in a rhythmic fashion

작은 분자들을 만들어내는 겁니다.

and generates a small molecule

작은 분자들은

that allows bacteria to communicate and synchronize,

as you're seeing in this movie.

The growing colony of bacteria that you see here

보고계신 확장 중인 박테리아 군집은

is about the width of a human hair.

인간 모발의 넓이 정도입니다.

Now, what you can't see is that our genetic program

자, 여러분이 보지는 못하고 있지만 우리의 유전 프로그램이

instructs these bacteria to each produce small molecules,

and these molecules travel between the thousands of individual bacteria

telling them when to turn on and off.

And the bacteria synchronize quite well at this scale,

and you can see these waves going from right to left across the screen.

Now, our genetic program relies on a natural phenomenon

called quorum sensing,

in which bacteria trigger coordinated and sometimes virulent behaviors

박테리아의 밀도가 위험수준에 이르면

once they reach a critical density.

You can observe quorum sensing in action in this movie,

where a growing colony of bacteria only begins to glow

once it reaches a high or critical density.

Our genetic program

continues producing these rhythmic patterns of fluorescent proteins

Now, besides programming these beautiful patterns,

I wondered, what else can we get these bacteria to do?

And I decided to explore how we can program bacteria

to detect and treat diseases in our bodies like cancer.

발견하고 치료할 수 있을 지를 연구하기로 결심했습니다.

One of the surprising facts about bacteria

박테리아에 관한 놀라운 사실 중 하나는

is that they can naturally grow inside of tumors.

종양 안에서 자연적으로 양산이 가능하다는 겁니다.

This happens because typically tumors

이것이 가능한 이유는 보통 종양이란

are areas where the immune system has no access,

면역체계가 작용하지 않는 부분이기 때문입니다.

and so bacteria find these tumors

그래서 박테리아들은 이런 종양을 찾아서

and use them as a safe haven to grow and thrive.

번식해 나가기에 안전한 안식처로 활용합니다.

We started using probiotic bacteria

프로바이오틱 박테리아는 건강에 도움을 주는 안전한 박테리아인데

which are safe bacteria that have a health benefit,

우리는 이를 활용하기 시작했고

and found that when orally delivered to mice,

쥐에게 구강으로 섭취하게 했을 때

these probiotics would selectively grow inside of liver tumors.

간에 있는 종양 안에서 선별적으로 번식하는 것을 발견했습니다.

We realized that the most convenient way

to highlight the presence of the probiotics,

and hence, the presence of the tumors,

was to get these bacteria to produce a signal

that would be detectable in the urine,

and so we specifically programmed these probiotics

to make a molecule that would change the color of your urine

We went on to show that this technology

could sensitively and specifically detect liver cancer,

Now, since these bacteria specifically localize to tumors,

and we've been doing this using quorum sensing programs

Altogether, imagine in the future taking a programmed probiotic

Our ability to program bacteria
