Twenty-five-and-a-quarter years ago I read

I thought this was unacceptable. So I decided to do something about it.

Sadly, it's come true. Malaria, as we all know,

슬프게도, 이것은 현실로 다가왔습니다. 모두 아시다시피, 말라리아 때문에

kills approximately one million people a year.

The reuse of syringes now exceeds that

and kills 1.3 million people a year.

This young girl and her friend

that I met in an orphanage in Delhi

were HIV positive from a syringe.

And what was so sad about this particular story

그리고 제가 말씀드린 이 이야기에서 슬픈 점은

was that once their parents had found out --

이 아이들의 부모가 그 사실을 알자마자

and don't forget, their parents took them to the doctor --

그 부모는 아이들을 의사에게 데려간 것이 아니라,

the parents threw them out on the street.

아이들을 거리에 내다 버렸다는 겁니다.

And hence they ended up in an orphanage.

그리고 결국 아이들은 고아원에 오게 되었습니다.

And it comes from situations like this where

이와 같은 일들은

you have either skilled or unskilled practitioners,

숙련된 의사건 초보 의사건 간에

blindly giving an injection to someone.

무턱대고 주사를 놓아주기 때문에 발생합니다.

And the injection is so valuable,

그리고 주사라는 것이 정말 귀하게 여겨집니다.

that the people basically trust

그래서 사람들은 기본적으로

the doctor, being second to God, which I've heard many times,

의사들을 신 다음 가는 존재로 여기면서(정말 많이 들었던 말입니다.)

to do the right thing. But in fact they're not.

항상 올바른 일만 할 것이라고 믿습니다. 하지만 사실 그렇지 않죠.

And you can understand, obviously, the transmission problem

이제 여러분들도 바이러스 위험지역에 있는

between people in high-virus areas.

사람들 간의 감염 문제를 분명히 이해할 수 있으실 겁니다.

This video we took undercover,

우리가 인도의 한 공립 병원에서 비밀리에 찍은

which shows you, over a half an hour period,

약 30분 동안의 이 영상에서 여러분들은

a tray of medicines of 42 vials,

트레이에 담긴 42개의 약병들을

which are being delivered with only 2 syringes in a public hospital in India.

오로지 2개의 주사기로만 놓아주고 있는 장면을 보실 수 있습니다.

And over the course of half an hour, not one syringe

그리고 이 30분 간 단 한 개의 주사기도

was filmed being unwrapped.

새것을 뜯는 장면은 찍히지 않았습니다.

They started with two and they ended with two.

두 개의 주사기로 시작해서 두 개로 끝났군요.

And you'll see, just now, a nurse coming back to the tray,

그리고 이제, 한 간호사가 트레이로 돌아옵니다.

which is their sort of modular station,

일종의 간호 스테이션인데요,

and dropping the syringe she's just used

방금 사용한 주사기를 다시 집어가서 사용할 수 있도록

back in the tray for it to be picked up and used again.

So you can imagine the scale of this problem.

And in fact in India alone, 62 percent

of all injections given

are unsafe.

안전하지 않습니다.

These kids in Pakistan don't go to school.

파키스탄의 이 어린이들은 학교에 가지 않습니다.

They are lucky. They already have a job.

운이 좋은 거지요. 이들은 이미 직업이 있습니다.

And that job is that they go around and pick up syringes

이 아이들이 하는 일은 병원의 뒷마당을 돌아다니며

from the back of hospitals,

주사기를 주워서 씻는 것입니다.

wash them, and in the course of this,

그리고 주사기를 줍는 과정에서

obviously picking them up they injure themselves.

당연히 상처를 입게 됩니다.

And then they repackage them and sell them out on markets

그리고 나서 아이들은 그 주사기들을 다시 포장해서 시장에 내다 팝니다.

for literally more money

애초에 소독되어 나오는 주사기보다

than a sterile syringe in the first place, which is quite bizarre.

더 많은 돈을 받기 위해서입니다. 정말 이상한 일이 아닐 수 없습니다.

In an interesting photo, their father, while we were talking to him,

이 흥미로운 사진을 보시면, 아이들의 아버지와 이야기를 나누던 중

picked up a syringe and pricked his finger --

그가 주사기를 줍다가 손가락을 찔리고는--

I don't know whether you can see the drop of blood on the end --

손가락 끝에서 피가 떨어지는 게 보이시는지 모르겠습니다--

and immediately whipped out a box of matches,

급히 성냥갑을 꺼내더니

lit one, and burned the blood off the end of his finger,

성냥에 불을 붙이고는, 손가락 끝의 피를 태워 버렸습니다.

giving me full assurance

에이즈의 감염을 막을 수 있는 방법이라고

that that was the way that you stopped the transmission of HIV.

제게 장담하며 말이죠.

In China, recycling is a major issue.

중국에서 재활용은 큰 이슈입니다.

And they are collected en mass -- you can see the scale of it here --

주사기들을 한 덩어리로 모아서-- 그 규모를 여기서 보실 수 있죠--

and sorted out, by hand, back into the right sizes,

일일이 손으로 분류해서 크기를 맞춰놓고

and then put back out on the street.

다시 유통시킵니다.

So recycling and reuse

그래서 재활용과 재사용이

are the major issues here.

굉장히 큰 문제가 되고 있습니다.

But there was one interesting anecdote that I found in Indonesia.

하지만 인도네시아에서 제가 찾은 흥미로운 일화가 있습니다.

In all schools in Indonesia,

인도네시아의 모든 학교에서는

there is usually a toy seller in the playground.

보통 운동장에 장난감 장수가 있습니다.

The toy seller, in this case,

이 경우에 장난감 장수는

had syringes, which they usually do,

보통 그랬듯이 주사기를 가지고 있었습니다.

next door to the diggers, which is obviously

예상하실 수 있듯이

what you would expect.

포크레인 장난감 옆에 말이지요.

And they use them, in the breaks, for water pistols.

쉬는 시간에 아이들은 주사기로 물총 놀이를 합니다.

They squirt them at each other, which is lovely and innocent.

서로 물총을 쏘아대죠. 사랑스럽고 순수한 모습입니다.

And they are having great fun.

아이들은 아주 즐거워 하고있습니다.

But they also drink from them

그러나 주사기로 물을 마시기도 합니다.

while they're in their breaks, because it's hot.

매우 덥기 때문이죠.

And they squirt the water into their mouths.

또한 아이들은 입 속에 물을 쏩니다.

And these are used with traces of blood visible.

이러한 주사기 안에는 혈액이 남아 있을 수도 있습니다.

So we need a better product. And we need better information.

따라서 우리는 더 나은 제품과 정보가 필요합니다.

And I think, if I can just borrow this camera,

그래서 저는 이 카메라를 좀 빌려서

I was going to show you my invention,

제가 고안해 낸

which I came up with.

발명품을 보여드리려고 합니다.

So, it's a normal-looking syringe.

이건 그냥 평범해 보이는 주사기입니다.

You load it up in the normal way. This is made

on existing equipment in 14 factories that we license.

이건 우리가 계약한 14곳의 공장에 현존하고 있는 설비를 기반으로 만들어졌습니다.

You give the injection and then put it down.

이제 주사를 한 대 놓고 바닥에 내려놓습니다.

If someone then tries to reuse it,

만약 누군가가 주사기를 재사용하려고 하면,

it locks and breaks afterwards.

단단히 고정되어 부러지게 됩니다.

It's very, very simple. Thank you.

아주 아주 간단하죠. 감사합니다.

And it costs the same as a normal syringe.

또한 이 주사기는 보통의 주사기와 가격이 똑같습니다.

And in comparison, a Coca-Cola

비교를 하자면, 코카 콜라 한 병이

is 10 times the price.

이 주사기보다 10배 더 비쌉니다.

And that will stop reusing a syringe 20 or 30 times.

이것이 주사기를 2, 30번 재사용하는 걸 막아 줄 겁니다.

And I have an information charity

그리고 저는 인도에서 큰 규모의 일을 해 낸

which has done huge scale amount of work in India.

정보 자선 단체를 가지고 있습니다.

And we're very proud of giving information to people,

우리는 사람들에게 정보를 전달해 주는 것을 매우 자랑스러워 하고 있습니다.

so that little kids like this don't do stupid things.

그럼으로써 이 작은 아이들이 바보같은 짓을 하지 않을 수 있도록 말입니다.
