Twenty-five-and-a-quarter years ago I read

ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತೈದು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ, ನಾನು ಒಂದು

a newspaper article which said

that one day syringes would be

one of the major causes of the spread of AIDS,

ಏಡ್ಸ್ ಬರುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಮತ್ತು

the transmission of AIDS.

ಹರಡುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಕಾರಣಗಳಾಗುತ್ತವೆ.

I thought this was unacceptable. So I decided to do something about it.

ನನಗೆ ಇದನ್ನು ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಳ್ಳೋಕೆ ಆಗದೆ, ಇದನ್ನು ತಡೆಯಲು ಏನಾದರು ಮಾಡುವ ನಿರ್ಧಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದೆ.

Sadly, it's come true. Malaria, as we all know,

ವಿಷಾದಕರ ಸಂಗತಿಯೆಂದರೆ, ಅದು ನಿಜವಾಯ್ತು. ನಮಗೆಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ತಿಳಿದಿರೋ ಹಾಗೆ ಮಲೇರಿಯಾ,

kills approximately one million people a year.

The reuse of syringes now exceeds that

and kills 1.3 million people a year.

ವರ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ 13 ಲಕ್ಷ ಜನರನ್ನು ಬಲಿತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾರಂಭಿಸಿತು.

This young girl and her friend

ನಾನು, ಈ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಹುಡುಗಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅವಳ ಗೆಳೆಯನನ್ನು

that I met in an orphanage in Delhi

ದೆಹಲಿಯ ಅನಾಥಾಶ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ನೋಡಿದ್ದೆ.

were HIV positive from a syringe.

ಅವರು ಸಿರಿಂಜಸ್ ಗಳಿಂದ ಹೆಚ್.ಐ.ವಿ. ಪೊಸಿಟಿವ್ ಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದರು.

And what was so sad about this particular story

ಮತ್ತು ಈ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಹಿಂದಿರುವ ಕರುಣಾಜನಕ ಕಥೆಯೆಂದರೆ,

was that once their parents had found out --

ಅವರ ತಂದೆ-ತಾಯಿಗೆ ಈ ವಿಷಯ ತಿಳಿಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಹಾಗೆ

and don't forget, their parents took them to the doctor --

( ಮರೆಯಬೇಡಿ, ತಂದೆ-ತಾಯಿಗಳೇ ವೈದ್ಯರ ಬಳಿ ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗಿದ್ದರು )

the parents threw them out on the street.

ತಂದೆ-ತಾಯಿಗಳೇ ಅವರನ್ನು ಬೀದಿಗೆ ತಳ್ಳಿದರು.

And hence they ended up in an orphanage.

ಈ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದಾಗಿ ಆ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಅನಾಥಾಶ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರು.

And it comes from situations like this where

ಇದಕ್ಕೆಲ್ಲಾ ಕಾರಣ

you have either skilled or unskilled practitioners,

ನಮ್ಮ ಪರಿಣಿತಿ ಹೊಂದಿದ ಅಥವಾ ಹೊಂದದ ವೈದ್ಯರುಗಳು,

blindly giving an injection to someone.

ಸುಮ್ಮನೆ ಎಲ್ಲದಕ್ಕೂ ಚುಚ್ಚುಮದ್ದು ನೀಡುವುದು.

And the injection is so valuable,

ಮತ್ತು ಈ ಚುಚ್ಚುಮದ್ದಿನ ಮೇಲೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ಭರವಸೆಯೆಂದರೆ

that the people basically trust

ನಮ್ಮ ಜನರಿಗೆ ವೈದ್ಯರ ಮೇಲೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ನಂಬಿಕೆಯೆಂದರೆ

the doctor, being second to God, which I've heard many times,

ನಾನು ಬಹಳ ಸಾರಿ ಕೇಳಿರುವ ಹಾಗೆ, ವೈದ್ಯರನ್ನು ಎರಡನೇ ದೇವರು,

to do the right thing. But in fact they're not.

ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ ನೀಡುತ್ತಾರೆಂದು ಭಾವಿಸಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅದು ನಿಜವಲ್ಲ.

And you can understand, obviously, the transmission problem

between people in high-virus areas.

This video we took undercover,

which shows you, over a half an hour period,

a tray of medicines of 42 vials,

which are being delivered with only 2 syringes in a public hospital in India.

And over the course of half an hour, not one syringe

ಮತ್ತು ಈ ಅರ್ಧ ಘಂಟೆ ಅವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ,

was filmed being unwrapped.

They started with two and they ended with two.

And you'll see, just now, a nurse coming back to the tray,

and dropping the syringe she's just used

back in the tray for it to be picked up and used again.

So you can imagine the scale of this problem.

And in fact in India alone, 62 percent

ಮತ್ತು ಭಾರತ ಒಂದೇ ದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ, 62%

of all injections given

ರೋಗಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಕೊಡುವ ಚುಚ್ಚುಮದ್ದುಗಳು

are unsafe.

These kids in Pakistan don't go to school.

ಈ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಪಾಕಿಸ್ತಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಶಾಲೆಗೆ ಹೋಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

They are lucky. They already have a job.

ಅವರು ಅದೃಷ್ಟಶಾಲಿಗಳು. ಅವರಿಗೆ ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ಕೆಲಸ ಇದೆ.

And that job is that they go around and pick up syringes

ಆ ಕೆಲಸವೇನೆಂದರೆ ಅವರು ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಕಡೆ ಸುತ್ತಾಡಿ ಸಿರೀಂಜಸ್ ಗಳನ್ನು ಸಂಗ್ರಹಿಸುವುದು

from the back of hospitals,

ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯ ಹಿಂದೆಯೆಲ್ಲಾ ಸುತ್ತಾಡಿ ಆರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ,

wash them, and in the course of this,

ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ತೊಳೆದು ಸ್ವಚ್ಚ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ ಮತ್ತು ಹೀಗೆ ಮಾಡುವಾಗ

obviously picking them up they injure themselves.

ಅಂದರೆ ಆರಿಸುವಾಗ ಮತ್ತು ತೊಳೆಯುವಾಗ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಗಾಯಗಳಾಗುತ್ತವೆ.

And then they repackage them and sell them out on markets

ಮತ್ತೆ ಅವರು ಆ ಸೂಜಿಗಳನ್ನು ಪುನಃ ಹೊಸದರಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿ ಮಾರುಕಟ್ಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ

for literally more money

ಕಡಿಮೆ ಬೆಲೆಗೆ ಮಾರಾಟ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ

than a sterile syringe in the first place, which is quite bizarre.

ಅದೂ ಸ್ಟೆರೈಲ್ ಸಿರೀಂಜ್ ಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಬೆಲೆಗೆ. ಇದು ಒಂದು ರೀತಿಯ ವಿಚಿತ್ರವೂ ಹೌದು.

In an interesting photo, their father, while we were talking to him,

ಈ ಫೋಟೋದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಆ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ತಂದೆಯ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ,

picked up a syringe and pricked his finger --

ಒಂದು ಸಿರೀಂಜ್ ಅನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡು, ಅವರ ಬೆರಳಿಗೆ ಚುಚ್ಚಿಕೊಂಡರು--

I don't know whether you can see the drop of blood on the end --

ನಂಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ, ನಿಮಗೆ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ರಕ್ತ ಕಾಣಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆಯೋ ಅಥವಾ ಇಲ್ಲವೋ ಎಂದು--

and immediately whipped out a box of matches,

ತಕ್ಷಣ ಅವರು ಒಂದು ಬೆಂಕಿ ಕಡ್ಡಿಯನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದು,

lit one, and burned the blood off the end of his finger,

ಹಚ್ಚಿ ರಕ್ತ ಬರುವ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಟ್ಟು ಬೆರಳಿನ ತುದಿಯನ್ನು ಸುಟ್ಟುಬಿಟ್ಟರು,

giving me full assurance

ಮತ್ತು ನನಗೆ ಪೂರ್ತಿ ಭರವಸೆಯನ್ನು ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾ ಹೇಳಿದರು

that that was the way that you stopped the transmission of HIV.

In China, recycling is a major issue.

ಚೀನಾದಲ್ಲಿ ವಸ್ತುಗಳ ಪುನರ್ಬಳಕೆ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ.

And they are collected en mass -- you can see the scale of it here --

So recycling and reuse

But there was one interesting anecdote that I found in Indonesia.

ಆದರೆ ನಾವು ಇಂಡೋನೇಶ್ಯಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ನೈಜ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಕಂಡೆವು.

In all schools in Indonesia,

ಇಂಡೋನೇಶ್ಯಾದ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಶಾಲೆಯ

there is usually a toy seller in the playground.

ಮೈದಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬ ಆಟದ ಸಾಮಾನು ಮಾರುವವನಿರುತ್ತಾನೆ.

The toy seller, in this case,

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಆಟದ ಸಾಮಾನು ಮಾರುವವನ ಬಳಿ

had syringes, which they usually do,

ಸಿರೀಂಜಸ್ ಗಳಿರುತ್ತವೆ,

next door to the diggers, which is obviously

ಅದರಿಂದ ಅವರು ಏನು ಮಾಡುವರೆಂದು

what you would expect.

ನೀವೇ ಊಹಿಸಬಹುದು.

And they use them, in the breaks, for water pistols.

ಈ ಸಿರೀಂಜಸ್ ಗಳನ್ನು ಮಕ್ಕಳು ವಿರಾಮ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಟ ಆಡಲು ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.

They squirt them at each other, which is lovely and innocent.

ಇದರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಅವರು ನೀರನ್ನು ಎರಚಾಡುವ ಆಟವನ್ನು ಮುಗ್ಧತೆಯಿಂದ ಆಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.

And they are having great fun.

But they also drink from them

while they're in their breaks, because it's hot.

And they squirt the water into their mouths.

And these are used with traces of blood visible.

So we need a better product. And we need better information.

I was going to show you my invention,

which I came up with.

So, it's a normal-looking syringe.

You load it up in the normal way. This is made

on existing equipment in 14 factories that we license.

You give the injection and then put it down.

If someone then tries to reuse it,

And it costs the same as a normal syringe.

And in comparison, a Coca-Cola

is 10 times the price.

ಕೋಕಾ-ಕೋಲಾವು ಇದರ 10 ರಷ್ಟಿದೆ.

And that will stop reusing a syringe 20 or 30 times.

ಮತ್ತು ಇದರಿಂದ ಪುನರ್ಬಳಕೆ ಮಾಡುವುದು 20-30 ಪಟ್ಟು ಕಡಿಮೆಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

And I have an information charity

which has done huge scale amount of work in India.

And we're very proud of giving information to people,

ಇದರಿಂದ ನಮಗೆ ಬಹಳ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆ ಇದೆ.

so that little kids like this don't do stupid things.
