First, I want to start by saying, this is a boy,

and this is probably stereotypically what you think of as a boy and a girl.

So I'm not going to do that, I'm not interested in doing that.

This is a different kind of boy and a different kind of girl.

So the point here is that not all boys exist within these rigid boundaries

of what we think of as boys and girls,

and not all girls exist within those rigid boundaries

But, in fact, most boys tend to be a certain way,

and most girls tend to be a certain way.

And the point is that, for boys,

the way that they exist and the culture that they embrace

isn't working well in schools now.

How do we know that?

The 100 girls project tells us some really nice statistics.

'100 명의 여학생 프로젝트'는

For example, for every 100 girls that are suspended from school,

there are 250 boys that are suspended from school.

For every 100 girls who are expelled from school,

there are 335 boys who are expelled from school.

퇴학 당하는 남학생 수는 335 명입니다.

For every 100 girls in special education,

there are 217 boys.

남학생은 217 명이죠.

For every 100 girls with a learning disability,

학습 장애를 가진 여학생이 100 명이면

남학생은 276 명입니다.

there are 276 boys.

For every 100 girls with an emotional disturbance diagnosed,

정서 장애를 가진

여학생이 100 명이라면

남학생은 324 명입니다.

we have 324 boys.

And by the way, all of these numbers are significantly higher

그런데 이 수치 차이는 다음과 같은 경우에 훨씬 더 커지게 됩니다.

if you happen to be black,

if you happen to be poor,

if you happen to exist in an overcrowded school.

you're four times as likely to be diagnosed with ADHD --

Now there is another side to this.

And it is important that we recognize that women still need help in school,

that salaries are still significantly lower,

even when controlled for job types,

and that girls have continued to struggle in math and science for years.

That's all true.

Nothing about that prevents us

from paying attention to the literacy needs

And so we should.

In fact, what we ought to do is take a page from their playbook,

because the initiatives and programs that have been set in place

for women in science and engineering and mathematics are fantastic.

They've done a lot of good for girls in these situations,

and we ought to be thinking about how we can make that happen for boys too

what we find is that there's still a problem.

which is a significant shift.

And in fact, university administrators are a little uncomfortable about the idea

And so we're starting to see

to think about how do we engage men in their experiences in the university.

Guess what?

Video games are not the cause.

Video games are a symptom.

They were turned off a long time before they got here.

So let's talk about why they got turned off

when they were between the ages of three and 13.

There are three reasons that I believe

that boys are out of sync with the culture of schools today.

The first is zero tolerance.

A kindergarten teacher I know, her son donated all of his toys to her,

제가 아는 유치원 교사가 있는데

and when he did, she had to go through and pull out all the little plastic guns.

그 분은 아들이 기증한 장난감에서

You can't have plastic knives and swords and axes

and all that kind of thing in a kindergarten classroom.

What is it that we're afraid that this young man is going to do with this gun?

대체 이 아이가 장난감 총으로 뭘 할 거라고 걱정하는 걸까요?

I mean, really.

진심으로 궁금하네요.

But here he stands as testament

오늘날 놀이터에서 남자 아이들이

to the fact that you can't roughhouse on the playground today.

시끄럽게 놀지 못하는 걸 바로 이 아이가 보여주는 겁니다.

Now I'm not advocating for bullies.

지금 저는 따돌림을 옹호하는 것도 아니고,

I'm not suggesting that we need to be allowing guns and knives in the school.

학교에 총과 칼을

허용해야 한다고 제안하는 것도 아닙니다. 하지만,

But when we say that an Eagle Scout in a high school classroom

이글 스카우트 학생 한 명이

who has a locked parked car in the parking lot and a penknife in it,

I think we may have gone a little too far with zero tolerance.

Another way that zero tolerance lives itself out

무관용의 또 다른 예는 남자아이들의 글쓰기에서도 드러납니다.

is in the writing of boys.

오늘날 많은 교실에서는

In a lot of classrooms today,

you're not allowed to write about anything that's violent.

폭력적인 것에 관한 어떤 글쓰기도 허용되지 않습니다.

비디오 게임과 관련된 것은 뭐가 됐든 작문 주제로

You're not allowed to write about anything that has to do with video games.

허용되지 않습니다. 이러한 주제는 금지되어 있죠.

These topics are banned.

학교를 다녀온 남자아이는 집에 와서 이렇게 말합니다.

Boy comes home from school, and he says,

"난 글쓰기가 싫어요."

"I hate writing."

"Why do you hate writing, son? What's wrong with writing?"

"얘야, 왜 글쓰기가 싫은 거니? 무슨 문제라도 있니?"

"선생님이 쓰라고 한 것만 써야 하니까요."

"Now I have to write what she tells me to write."

"OK, what is she telling you to write?"

"그래, 선생님이 너한테 뭘 쓰라고 하시는데?"

"Poems. I have to write poems.

"시요. 저보고 시를 쓰래요.

And little moments in my life.

인생의 작은 기억 같은 거요.

I don't want to write that stuff."

저는 그런 것 따위는 쓰고 싶지 않아요."

"그렇구나. 그럼 너는 뭘 쓰고 싶은데? 뭐에 관해 쓰고 싶니?"

"Well, what do you want to write?

What do you want to write about?"

"저는 비디오 게임에 관한 걸 쓰고 싶어요. 레벨을 올리는 것에 관해서요.

"I want to write about video games. I want to write about leveling-up.

정말 재미있는 세상에 대해 쓰고 싶어요.

I want to write about this really interesting world.

토네이도가 집에 들이 닥쳐서 창문과 가구를 다 날려버리고,

I want to write about a tornado that comes into our house

사람들을 모조리 죽여버리는,

and blows all the windows out,

그런 얘기에 대해 쓰고 싶어요."

and ruins all the furniture and kills everybody."

"그래 알았다. 그렇게 하렴"

"All right. OK."

라고 하고 이걸 선생님에게 말하면

You tell a teacher that, and they'll ask you, in all seriousness,

선생님은 진지하게 이렇게 물어볼 겁니다.

"Should we send this child to the psychologist?"

"아이를 심리상담사에게 보내야 하지 않을까요?"

And the answer is no, he's just a boy.

아니에요. 그 애는 그냥 남자아이일 뿐이에요.

He's just a little boy.

그냥 어린 남자아이입니다.

It's not OK to write these kinds of things in classrooms today.

오늘날의 교실에서는 그런 것들을 주제로

글쓰기는 허용되지 않습니다.

자, 그것이 첫 번째 이유입니다.

So that's the first reason:

Zero tolerance policies and the way they're lived out.

무관용과 그리고 그게 유지되는 방식이 그 이유입니다.

The next reason that boys' cultures are out of sync with school cultures:

다음 이유는 남자아이의 문화가 학교 문화와 조화를 이루지 못한다는 겁니다.

there are fewer male teachers.

Anybody who's over 15 doesn't know what this means,

because in the last 10 years,

the number of elementary school classroom teachers has been cut in half.

초등학교 교사의 수는 반으로

We went from 14 percent to seven percent.

That means that 93 percent of the teachers

that our young men get in elementary classrooms are women.

Now what's the problem with this?

Women are great, yep, absolutely.

여성은 위대하죠. 네, 그건 확실해요.

하지만 남자아이에게 롤모델이 되어서

But male role models for boys that say it's all right to be smart --

똑똑한 건 좋은 거라고 말해주는 남자들은

아버지이거나, 목사님이거나,

they've got dads, they've got pastors, they've got Cub Scout leaders,

소년단 단장님인 거죠.

but ultimately, six hours a day, five days a week

하지만 궁극적으로 아이들은 하루에 6시간,

they're spending in a classroom,

일주일에 5일은 교실에서 보냅니다.

대부분의 교실은 성인 남성이

and most of those classrooms are not places where men exist.

존재하는 곳이 아닙니다.

And so they say, I guess this really isn't a place for boys.

그래서 남자아이들은 이렇게 말합니다. "여긴 우릴 위한 곳이 아닌 것 같아.

여긴 여자애들을 위한 곳이야.

This is a place for girls.

그래서 난 공부를 잘 못하는 거고.

And I'm not very good at this,

so I guess I'd better go play video games

or get into sports, or something like that,

because I obviously don't belong here.

여기는 내가 있을 곳이 아니니까." 라고 말입니다.

Men don't belong here, that's pretty obvious.

남자들은 여기에 속해 있지 않죠. 분명히요.

So that may be a very direct way that we see it happen.

이게 현재 일어나는 사실들을 말해주는

직접적인 방식이겠네요.

덜 직접적으로 말해보죠.

But less directly, the lack of male presence in the culture --

학교 문화에서의 남성의 부재는 다음과 같습니다.

you've got a teachers' lounge, and they're having a conversation

교사 휴게실에서 선생님들이

다음의 대화를 나누고 있습니다.

about Joey and Johnny who beat each other up on the playground.

조이와 죠니가 운동장에서 서로 치고 받고 싸웠습니다.

"이 애들을 어떻게 할까?"

"What are we going to do with these boys?"

이 질문에 대한 답은 누가 그 자리에 있냐에 따라 달라질 겁니다.

The answer to that question changes

depending on who's sitting around that table.

그 자리에 남자가 있나요?

Are there men around that table?

그 자리에 그 아이들의 엄마가 있나요?

Are there moms who've raised boys around that table?

그 자리에 누가 있냐에 따라 대화가

You'll see, the conversation changes

depending upon who's sitting around the table.

달라지는 걸 여러분은 보실 겁니다.

Third reason that boys are out of sync with school today:

다음은 남자아이가 오늘날의 학교와 조화를 이루지 못하는 세 번째 이유입니다.

Kindergarten is the old second grade, folks.

현재의 유치원은 예전의 2학년 수준 정도 됩니다.

We have a serious compression of the curriculum happening out there.

교과과정이 심각하게 압축되어 진행되고 있는 겁니다.

When you're three, you better be able to write your name legibly,

만 3살이 되면 이름 정도는 제대로 쓸 줄 알아야 하고

그렇지 못한다면 발달 지체로 간주될 겁니다.

or else we'll consider it a developmental delay.

By the time you're in first grade,

you should be able to read paragraphs of text

with maybe a picture, maybe not, in a book of maybe 25 to 30 pages.

If you don't,

we're probably going to be putting you into a Title I special reading program.

And if you ask Title I teachers, they'll tell you

they've got about four or five boys for every girl that's in their program,

4-5명이 있습니다.

in the elementary grades.

The reason that this is a problem

is because the message that boys are getting

is, "You need to do what the teacher asks you to do all the time."

The teacher's salary depends on "No Child Left Behind"

and all of this.

So she has to figure out a way to get all these boys

그러니까 여성교사들은 남학생이

이 과정들을 마치도록 해야 하는 것이죠.

through this curriculum -- and girls.

여학생도 그렇고요.

이러한 압축 교과과정은 활동적인

This compressed curriculum is bad for all active kids.

아이에겐 맞지 않습니다.

And what happens is,

교실에서 벌어지는 건

she says, "Please, sit down, be quiet, do what you're told,

여성교사가 "앉아라,

조용히 해라, 시키는대로 해라, 규칙을 지켜라,

follow the rules, manage your time, focus, be a girl."

시간 관리 잘 해라, 집중해라,

여학생처럼 행동해라." 라고 말하는 것이죠.

이게 여성교사가 남자 아이들에게 하는 말입니다.

That's what she tells them.

간접적으로 여성교사가 학생들에게 하는 말이죠.

Indirectly, that's what she tells them.

And so this is a very serious problem.

이건 정말 심각한 문제입니다. 이 문제는 어디서 왔을까요?

Where is it coming from? It's coming from us.

우리에게서 온 겁니다.

We want our babies to read when they are six months old.

우린 아이들이 6개월만 되면 읽을 수 있길 바라죠.

Have you seen the ads?

이런 광고 보신 적 있으신가요?

We want to live in Lake Wobegon where every child is above average ...

우리는 레이크 워비곤에 살고 싶어 합니다.

그곳에선 모든 아이가 평균 이상이죠. (레이크 워비곤: 평균 이상의 수준의 사람들이 모여사는 가상의 마을)

but what this does to our children is really not healthy.

It's not developmentally appropriate,

and it's particularly bad for boys.

So what do we do?

남자아이들의 있는 그대로의 모습을 봐야 합니다.

We need to meet them where they are.

We need to put ourselves into boy culture.

우린 남자아이들의 문화를 체험해봐야 합니다.

We need to change the mindset of acceptance in boys

초등학교에서 남자아이를 받아들이는

우리의 사고 방식을 바꿔야 합니다.

in elementary schools.

More specifically, we can do some very specific things.

좀 더 구체적으로, 우리는 이런 것들을 해 볼 수 있죠.

We can design better games.

좀 더 괜찮은 게임을 만들 수 있습니다.

Most of the educational games that are out there today

오늘날 사용되는 대부분의 교육용 게임은

are really flashcards.

They're glorified drill and practice.

They don't have the depth, the rich narrative

that really engaging video games have,

that the boys are really interested in.

So we need to design better games.

We need to talk to teachers and parents and school board members and politicians.

We need to make sure that people see that we need more men in the classroom.

We need to look carefully at our zero tolerance policies.

Do they make sense?

We need to think about how to uncompress this curriculum if we can,

그 아이들이 편하게 느낄 수 있는 공간으로

trying to bring boys back into a space that is comfortable for them.

돌아올 수 있도록 교과과정을 어떻게

풀어낼지 생각해 봐야 합니다.

All of those conversations need to be happening.

There are some great examples out there of schools --

the New York Times just talked about a school recently.

put together a wonderful video gaming school.

But it only treats a few kids, and so this isn't very scalable.

We have to change the culture and the feelings

Most of the educational games do not.

Where we started:

my colleagues Mike Petner, Shawn Vashaw, myself,

we started by trying to look at the teachers' attitudes

and find out how do they really feel about gaming,

what do they say about it.

And we discovered that they talk about the kids in their school,

who talk about gaming, in pretty demeaning ways.

They say, "Oh, yeah. They're always talking about that stuff.

게임 주인공 인형이나 하찮은 게임의 성과나

They're talking about their little action figures

훈장따위에 대한 것들,

and their little achievements or merit badges,

or whatever it is that they get.

And they're always talking about this stuff."

만날 그런 얘기만 떠들어 대죠."

And they say these things as if it's OK.

교사들은 아무렇지 않게 이렇게 말합니다.

But if it were your culture, think of how that might feel.

하지만 그것이 자기의 문화였다면,

어떻게 느낄까요.

It's very uncomfortable to be on the receiving end

그런 종류의 말을 듣는 게

of that kind of language.

무척 불편하겠죠.

교사들은 폭력과 관련된 것은

They're nervous about anything that has anything to do with violence

어떤 것이 됐든 불안해 합니다.

because of the zero tolerance policies.

무관용 정책 때문이죠.

They are sure that parents and administrators

교사들은 학부모나 행정가들이 어떤 것도 받아들이지 않을 거라 확신합니다.

will never accept anything.

So we really need to think about looking at teacher attitudes

그래서 우리는 교사들의 태도를 살펴보고

and finding ways to change the attitudes,

그 태도를 바꾸는 방법을 찾아야 합니다.

so that teachers are much more open and accepting of boy cultures

그래서 교실에서 남자아이의 문화에

교사들이 좀 더 마음을 열고 받아들일 수 있도록 말입니다.

in their classrooms.

Because, ultimately, if we don't,

왜냐하면 궁극적으로 교사들이 바뀌지 않으면

then we're going to have boys who leave elementary school saying,

남자아이들은 초등학교를 떠나면서 이렇게 말할 겁니다.

"음, 학교는 여자 애들을 위한 곳인 것 같아.

"Well I guess that was just a place for girls, it wasn't for me.

여긴 나를 위한 곳이 아니야.

So I've got to do gaming, or I've got to do sports."

그러니까 나는 게임이나 하고, 운동이나 해야겠다." 라고요.

If we change these things, if we pay attention to these things,

우리가 이걸 변화시킨다면, 이런 것에 관심을 기울인다면, 우리는 다시

and we reengage boys in their learning,

남자 아이들을 학업에 참여시킬 수 있습니다.

they will leave the elementary schools saying, "I'm smart."

그리고 그 아이들은 초등학교를 떠나면서 이렇게 말하겠죠. "난 똑똑해."
