I was hoping today to talk a little bit about creativity.

You know, a lot of people really struggle

to give themselves permission to be creative.

And reasonably so.

I mean, we're all a little suspect of our own talent.

And I remember a story I came across in my early 20s

that kind of meant a lot to me.

I was really into Allen Ginsberg,

and I was reading his poetry,

and I was reading -- he did a lot of interviews --

and one time, William F. Buckley had this television program

and Ginsberg went on there and sang a Hare Krishna song

And he got back to New York to all his intelligentsia friends,

And he said, "That's my job.

I'm a poet, and I'm going to play the fool.

Most people have to go to work all day long,

and they come home and they fight with their spouse,

and they eat, and they turn on the old boob tube,

飯を食べて ぼろいテレビをつければ

and somebody tries to sell them something,

CMばかり

and I just screwed all that up.

それを全部 ぶち壊したんだ

I went on and I sang about Krishna,

私がクリシュナの歌を歌ったとき

and now they're sitting in bed and going, 'Who is this stupid poet?'

And they can't fall asleep, right?"

寝られなくなるだろ？」

And that's his job as a poet.

これが詩人の仕事なんです

And so, I find that very liberating,

because I think that most of us really want to offer the world

だって 誰でも優れたものを 世の中に出したいと

something of quality,

本気で思っているんです

something that the world will consider good or important.

世間で「良い」とか「重要だ」と 思われるようなものをね

And that's really the enemy,

because it's not up to us whether what we do is any good,

だって 自分のすることが良いか悪いかは 自分では判断できないんです

and if history has taught us anything,

それに歴史を見てもわかる通り

the world is an extremely unreliable critic.

世間の評判だって全然あてになりません

Right?

でしょう？

So you have to ask yourself:

だから よく考えなきゃならない

Do you think human creativity matters?

「人間の創造性は重要なものか？」

Well, hmm.

ふむ

Most people don't spend a lot of time thinking about poetry. Right?

大抵の人は 詩のことばかり 考えてるわけじゃない

They have a life to live,

自分の生活があるし

and they're not really that concerned with Allen Ginsberg's poems

そもそも そんなに関心がない

ギンズバーグの詩だろうと 誰の詩だろうとね

or anybody's poems,

until their father dies,

でも父親が亡くなったり

they go to a funeral,

葬式に行ったり

you lose a child,

自分の子供を亡くしたり

somebody breaks your heart, they don't love you anymore,

「もう愛してない」って 振られたりして

and all of a sudden,

急に 必死になって

you're desperate for making sense out of this life,

人生を理解しようとするんです

and, "Has anybody ever felt this bad before?

「こんなに嫌な気持ちを 味わった人はいるんだろうか？

How did they come out of this cloud?"

暗闇から どう脱出したんだろう？」

Or the inverse -- something great.

逆に すごく良いこともあります

You meet somebody and your heart explodes.

素敵な出会いがあって 心臓が爆発しそう

You love them so much, you can't even see straight.

好きすぎて まともに考えられない

You know, you're dizzy.

頭がクラクラする

"Did anybody feel like this before? What is happening to me?"

「この感じを経験した人はいるのか？ 何が起きてるんだろう？」

And that's when art's not a luxury, it's actually sustenance.

こんな時 芸術はぜいたく品ではなく 必需品になります

We need it.

欠かせないものなんです

OK. Well, what is it?

これは何だろう？

Human creativity is nature manifest in us.

人間の創造性は 自分の中にあらわれる本質です

We look at the, oh ...

例えば―

the aurora borealis. Right?

オーロラを見ますよね

I did this movie called "White Fang" when I was a kid,

若い頃 『ホワイト・ファング』という 映画に出て

and we shot up in Alaska,

アラスカで撮影したんです

and you go out at night

夜 外に出たら

夜空が紫やピンクや白い光で 波打っているようで

and the sky was like rippling with purple and pink and white,

and it's the most beautiful thing I ever saw.

人生で一番美しい光景でした

It really looked like the sky was playing.

まるで空全体が 瞬いているみたいに美しかった

Beautiful.

夕焼けのグランドキャニオンもきれいです

You go to Grand Canyon at sundown.

It's beautiful.

We know that's beautiful.

誰もが美しいと思います

では 恋に落ちる時は？

But fall in love?

Your lover's pretty beautiful.

相手はすごくきれいです

I have four kids.

僕には子供が４人います

Watching them play?

子供が遊んでいるのを見るのは？

Watching them pretend to be a butterfly

蝶々ごっこをしていたり

or run around the house and doing anything,

家の周りを走っていたり 何をしていても

it's so beautiful.

本当に美しい

And I believe that we are here on this star in space

宇宙に漂うこの星の上で みんな助け合おうとしていると

to try to help one another. Right?

僕は信じているんです

And first we have to survive,

まず人間は生きなければならない

and then we have to thrive.

そして栄えなければならない

And to thrive, to express ourselves,

栄えるため 自分を表現するためには

alright, well, here's the rub: we have to know ourselves.

ここがやっかいなんですが 自分を知る必要があるんです

What do you love?

自分の大好きなものは？

And if you get close to what you love,

好きなものに近づくと

who you are is revealed to you,

自分の人となりが分かってきて

and it expands.

自分が広がるんです

For me, it was really easy.

僕の場合は すごく簡単でした

I did my first professional play. I was 12 years old.

初めてプロとして舞台に立ったんです 12歳の時でした

I was in a play called "Saint Joan" by George Bernard Shaw

ジョージ・バーナード・ショーの 『聖女ジョウン』という劇を

at the McCarter Theatre,

マッカーター劇場でやり

and -- boom! -- I was in love.

そして バン！ 恋に落ちました

My world just expanded.

世界が広がったんです

And that profession -- I'm almost 50 now --

そして この仕事― もう50歳になりますが―

that profession has never stopped giving back to me,

この仕事は やればやるほど 応えてくれます

and it gives back more and more,

そして おもしろいことに

mostly, strangely,

主に自分が演じた役を通じて

through the characters that I've played.

I've played cops, I've played criminals,

I've played priests, I've played sinners,

and the magic of this over a lifetime, over 30 years of doing this,

is that you start to see that my experiences,

me, Ethan, is not nearly as unique

as I thought.

I have so much in common with all these people.

And so they have something in common with me.

You start to see how connected we all are.

My great-grandmother, Della Hall Walker Green,

曽祖母の デラ・ホール・ウォーカー・グリーンは

on her deathbed,

亡くなる直前に

she wrote this little biography in the hospital,

病院で短い自伝を書きました

and it was only about 36 pages long,

たった36ページの自伝でしたが

and she spent about five pages

５ページくらい割いて書いたのは

on the one time she did costumes for a play.

一度 劇の衣装作りをした時のことでした

Her first husband got, like, a paragraph.

最初の夫は一段落くらい

Cotton farming, of which she did for 50 years, gets a mention.

50年も続けた綿農家については ちょっと触れただけ

Five pages on doing these costumes.

なのに 衣装作りには５ページです

And I look -- my mom gave me one of her quilts that she made,

曽祖母が作ったキルトを 母がくれたんですが

and you can feel it.

そこから感じるのは

She was expressing herself,

曽祖母が自己表現していたということ

and it has a power that's real.

そのキルトには本物の力があることです

I remember my stepbrother and I went to go see "Top Gun,"

義理の兄と『トップ・ガン』を 見に行ったことを覚えています

whatever year that came out.

公開された年です

And I remember we walked out of the mall, it was, like, blazing hot,

２人でショッピングモールを出ると 焼けるような暑さでした

I just looked at him,

彼を一目見て

and we both felt that movie just like a calling from God.

２人とも この映画から 天啓を得たことがわかりました

You know? Just ...

まさに…

But completely differently.

でも ２人の天啓は別々

Like, I wanted to be an actor.

僕は俳優志望で

I was like, I've got to make something that makes people feel.

人に感動を与えるものを

作ることに関わりたかった

I just want to be a part of that.

兄は陸軍志望でした

And he wanted to be in the military.

２人でFBIごっことか 兵隊ごっことか

That's all we ever did was play FBI, play army man,

騎士ごっこをしました 僕は剣を こう構えるのが好き

play knights, you know, and I'd like, pose with my sword,

and he would build a working crossbow

兄は木を打ち抜けるような

that you could shoot an arrow into a tree.

クロスボウを作るのが好きで

だから陸軍に入隊しました

So he joins the army.

Well, he just retired a colonel in the Green Berets.

少し前までグリーンベレーで 大佐をしていました

He's a multidecorated combat veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq.

アフガニスタンとイラクで戦闘に参加し 勲章をいくつか授与されました

He now teaches a sail camp for children of fallen soldiers.

今はキャンプで戦没兵の子供に ヨットを指導しています

He gave his life to his passion.

彼は情熱に人生を捧げました

His creativity was leadership,

彼にとって創造性とは リーダーシップであり

leading others,

人々を率いることや

his bravery, to help others.

勇気や 人を助けることでした

That was something he felt called to do,

彼はそれを自分の使命だと感じ

and it gave back to him.

そこから彼は何かを得たのです

We know this -- the time of our life is so short,

分かりきったことですが 人生はすごく短くて

and how we spend it --

どう人生を送るか—

are we spending it doing what's important to us?

自分にとって大切なことに 時間を使っているだろうか？

Most of us not.

そうでない人がほとんどです

I mean, it's hard.

難しいことですから

The pull of habit is so huge,

習慣というのは すごく強力で

and that's what makes kids so beautifully creative,

だから子供は 美しい創造力を 発揮するんです

is that they don't have any habits,

子供には まだ習慣がないからなのか

and they don't care if they're any good or not, right?

出来の良し悪しなんて 気にしないからなのか

They're not building a sandcastle going,

子供は砂でお城を作りながら

"I think I'm going to be a really good sandcastle builder."

「砂の城づくりを極めよう」 なんて言いません

They just throw themselves at whatever project you put in front of them --

目の前にあることを 何でも夢中でやるだけです

dancing, doing a painting,

ダンスも お絵かきも

building something:

何か作るのでも

any opportunity they have,

目の前のものなら何でもです

they try to use it to impress upon you their individuality.

子供はそういうことを通して 自分の個性を発揮します

It's so beautiful.

実に美しい

It's a thing that worries me sometimes whenever you talk about creativity,

創造性の話になると 心配になることがあります

because it can have this kind of feel that it's just nice,

創造性は 単に良いものとか

you know, or it's warm or it's something pleasant.

温かみのあるもの 快いものという 感じを与えるからです

It's not.

でも そうじゃない

It's vital.

絶対必要なものなんです

It's the way we heal each other.

創造性はお互いを癒すことなんです

In singing our song,

僕たちが歌うとき

in telling our story,

ストーリーを語るとき

in inviting you to say,

そして

"Hey, listen to me, and I'll listen to you,"

「ねえ 聞いてよ 僕も聞くから」って 相手を誘うとき

we're starting a dialogue.

対話が始まります

And when you do that, this healing happens,

その時 癒されて

and we come out of our corners,

自分の殻から外に出て

and we start to witness each other's common humanity.

お互いに共通する人間性が 見えてくるんです

We start to assert it.

人間性を主張し始めるんです

And when we do that, really good things happen.

すると 素晴らしいことが起こります

So, if you want to help your community, if you want to help your family,

だから 近所の人とか 自分の家族や友達に

if you want to help your friends,

手を貸したいと思うなら

you have to express yourself.

まず自分を出さないと

And to express yourself, you have to know yourself.

そして 自分を出すには 自分を知らなくては

It's actually super easy.

でも すごく簡単です

You just have to follow your love.

大好きなものを追いかけるんです

There is no path.

決まった道なんてありません

There's no path till you walk it,

あなたが歩いてみて 初めて道ができるんだし

and you have to be willing to play the fool.

進んで道化を演じるべきです

So don't read the book that you should read,

だから 必読書を読むんじゃなくて

read the book you want to read.

読みたいものを読むんです

Don't listen to the music that you used to like.

昔 好きだった音楽を聞くんじゃなくて

Take some time to listen to some new music.

新しい音楽を聞いてみるんです

Take some time to talk to somebody that you don't normally talk to.

普段は話しかけない人に 話しかけるんです

I guarantee, if you do that,

そうすれば きっと

you will feel foolish.

自分が愚かに思えるでしょう

That's the point.

それが大事なんです

Play the fool.

道化を演じるんです

(Sings) Well, I want to go Austin, and I wanna stay home.

（歌）オースチンに行きたい でも自分の家にもいたい

Invite our friends over but still be alone.

友達を家に呼びたい でも独りでいたい

Live for danger.

危険に飛び込みたい

Play it cool.

でも冷静でいたい

Have everyone respect me for being a fool.

自分の愚かさを みんなに称えられたい
