I was raised by lesbians in the mountains,

and I sort of came like a forest gnome to New York City a while back.

Really messed with my head, but I'll get into that later.

I'll start with when I was eight years old.

I took a wood box,

and I buried a dollar bill, a pen and a fork inside this box in Colorado.

And I thought some strange humanoids or aliens in 500 years would find this box

and learn about the way our species exchanged ideas,

maybe how we ate our spaghetti.

I really didn't know.

Anyway, this is kind of funny,

ともあれ まあ面白いことに

because here I am, 30 years later, and I'm still making boxes.

30年後 僕はここで いまだに箱を作ってる

Now, at some point I was in Hawaii --

さて ハワイにいた時

I like to hike and surf and do all that weird stuff,

ハイキングとかサーフィンとか 変なことばっか好きだった

and I was making a collage for my ma.

それから母親のために コラージュを作ってたんだ

And I took a dictionary and I ripped it up,

辞書をビリビリに裂いて

and I made it into a sort of Agnes Martin grid,

アグネス・マーチン風の 作品にした

and I poured resin all over it and a bee got stuck.

そして一面に樹脂を流し込んだら 蜂がはさまった

Now, she's afraid of bees and she's allergic to them,

ところで 母は蜂が嫌いで アレルギーもあった

so I poured more resin on the canvas, thinking I could hide it or something.

だから僕は樹脂をもっと流し込んだ 蜂や何かを覆い隠そうと思って

Instead, the opposite happened:

その代わり 逆のことが起きた

It sort of created a magnification,

拡大図みたいになったんだ

like a magnifying glass, on the dictionary text.

So what did I do? I built more boxes.

それで何をしたかって？ もっとたくさん箱を作ったよ

This time, I started putting electronics, frogs,

今回は電子機器にカエル

strange bottles I'd find in the street -- anything I could find --

それから変な瓶とか 道で見つけた物を何でも入れた

because I was always finding things my whole life,

僕は常に何かしら 物を見つけては

and trying to make relationships and tell stories between these objects.

それらを関係づけて 物語を作ろうとしていたんだ

So I started drawing around the objects,

and I realized: Holy moly, I can draw in space!

I can make free-floating lines,

like the way you would draw around a dead body at a crime scene.

So I took the objects out,

and I created my own taxonomy of invented specimens.

First, botanical -- which you can kind of get a sense of.

Then I made some weird insects and creatures.

It was really fun; I was just drawing on the layers of resin.

これはすごく面白かった 層にした樹脂の上に描いただけなのに

And it was cool, because I was actually starting to have shows and stuff,

I was making some money, I could take my girlfriend for dinner,

and like, go to Sizzler.

It was some good shit, man.

At some point, I got up to the human form,

ある時点で 人間にたどり着いた

life-size resin sculptures with drawings of humans inside the layers.

樹脂製の等身大彫刻と線描画を 層の間に閉じ込めた

This was great, except for one thing:

これはすごかったよ １つの点を除いてね―

I was going to die.

死にそうになったんだ

I didn't know what to do, because the resin was going to kill me.

どうしたらいいのか分からなかった 樹脂のせいで死にかけてた

And I went to bed every night thinking about it.

So I tried using glass.

それでガラスを使ってみた

I started drawing on the layers of glass,

ガラスを何層にも重ねて その上に描き始めた

almost like if you drew on a window, then you put another window,

初めの窓に描いたら 別の窓を上に置いて

and another window, and you had all these windows together

そしてまた別の窓 すると全部の窓が重なって

that made a three-dimensional composition.

And this really worked, because I could stop using the resin.

So I did this for years,

which culminated in a very large work, which I call "The Triptych."

"The Triptych" was largely inspired

by Hieronymus Bosch's "[The] Garden of Earthly Delights,"

which is a painting in the [Museo del] Prado in Spain.

Good, it's a cool painting.

It's kind of ahead of its time, they say.

So, "The Triptych." I'll walk you through this piece.

It weighs 24,000 pounds.

It's 18 feet long.

It's double-sided, so it's 36 feet of composition.

It's kind of weird.

Well, that's the blood fountain.

To the left, you have Jesus and the locusts.

There's a cave

where all these animal-headed creatures travel between two worlds.

They go from the representational world,

to this analog-mesh underworld, where they're hiding.

This is where the animal-headed creatures are by the lighthouse,

これはその動物の頭をした生き物が 灯台のそばにいるところ

and they're all about to commit mass suicide into the ocean.

そしてこいつらは 海に集団で身投げするんだ

The ocean is made up of thousands of elements.

海は何千もの要素でできている

This is a bird god tied up to a battleship.

これは戦艦にしばりつけられた 鳥の神

Billy Graham is in the ocean;

the Horizon from the oil spill; Waldo; Osama Bin Laden's shelter --

there's all kinds of weird stuff that you can find

if you look really hard, in the ocean.

Anyway, this is a lady creature.

She's coming out of the ocean, and she's spitting oil into one hand

彼女は海から現れ 片手にオイルを吐き出し

and she has clouds coming out of her other hand.

もう一方の手からは 雲が生まれている

Her hands are like scales,

彼女の手は てんびんのようになっていて

and she has the mythological reference of the Earth and cosmos in balance.

So that's one side of "The Triptych."

It's a little narrative thing.

That's her hand that she's spitting into.

And then, when you go to the other side,

she has like a trunk, like a bird's beak,

and she's spitting clouds out of her trunk.

Then she has an 18-foot-long serpent's tail that connects "The Triptych."

そして ヘビのような５メートルの尾が 『The Triptych』の３面をつないでいる

Anyway, her tail catches on fire from the back of the volcano.

ともあれ その尾は 火山の下で噴き上がる炎にぶつかる

(Laughter)

I don't know why that happened.

That happens, you know.

よくあることだよな

Her tail terminates in a cycloptic eyeball,

彼女の尾はひとつ目の眼球で 終わっている

made out of 1986 terrorist cards.

この眼球は1986年の テロリスト・カードでできてるんだ

Have you guys seen those?

見たことある？

They were made in the 1980's, they're like baseball cards of terrorists.

1980年代に作られたもので テロリスト版野球ゲームみたいなもんだ

Way ahead of their time.

時代を先取りだね

That will bring you to my latest project.

僕の最新プロジェクトを紹介しよう

I'm in the middle of two projects:

今２つのプロジェクトに取り組んでる

One's called "Psychogeographies."

１つは 『Psychogeographies（心の地図）』

It's about a six-year project to make 100 of these humans.

このプロジェクトでは ６年間で100体の人物を作る

Each one is an archive of our culture,

ひとりひとりが 種々の物の断片から作られた

through our ripped-up media and matter,

文化のアーカイブなんだ

whether it's encyclopedias or dictionaries or magazines.

百科事典や辞書かもしれないし 雑誌かもしれないけど

But each one acts as a sort of an archive in the shape of a human,

ひとりひとりが 人間の形をした 一種のアーカイブになっているんだ

and they travel in groups of 20, 4, or 12 at a time.

彼らは集団で旅をする 20人 4人 12人とか

They're like cells -- they come together, they divide.

細胞みたいに 合体し 分裂するんだ

And you kind of walk through them. It's taking me years.

Each one is basically a 3,000-pound microscope slide

with a human stuck inside.

This one has a little cave in his chest.

That's his head; there's the chest, you can kind of see the beginning.

I'm going to go down the body for you:

There's a waterfall coming out of his chest,

胸から滝が流れ落ちている

covering his penis -- or not-penis, or whatever it is,

局部を覆って― ペニスと決まったわけじゃない

a kind of androgynous thing.

一種の両性具有なんだ

I'll take you quickly through these works,

さっさといこう

because I can't explain them for too long.

There are the layers, you can kind of see it.

層になってるだろ

That's a body getting split in half.

半分に割れた人体

This one has two heads,

これは頭が２つあって

and it's communicating between the two heads.

両者間でコミュニケートしている

You can see the pills coming out,

薬が現れ

going into one head from this weird statue.

この奇妙な彫像から片方の頭に 投与される

There's a little forest scene inside the chest cavity.

胸の空洞には 小さな森の光景が見える

Can you see that?

見える？

Anyway, this talk's all about these boxes,

ともあれ このトークは全部 「箱」についてだ

like the boxes we're in.

僕らがいるのもそうだ

This box we're in, the solar system is a box.

この箱に僕らは入っているし 太陽系だって箱みたいなもんだ

This brings you to my latest box.

It's a brick box. It's called Pioneer Works.

Inside of this box is a physicist,

この箱の中は 物理学者

a neuroscientist, a painter, a musician,

神経科学者や画家、ミュージシャン

a writer, a radio station, a museum, a school,

作家、ラジオ局、博物館に学校

a publishing arm to disseminate all the content we make there into the world;

そして出版社が 世界に向け 作り上げたもの全てを広めている

a garden.

これは庭

We shake this box up,

この箱を振ると

and all these people kind of start hitting each other like particles.

これらの全ての人々が 粒子みたいにぶつかりあうよね

And I think that's the way you change the world.

これが世界を変えると思うんだ

You redefine your insides and the box that you're living in.

自身の内面と 住んでいる世界を再定義し

And you come together to realize that we're all in this together,

それによって 団結し ここに皆共にいることを悟るんだ

that this delusion of difference --

違いという幻想 つまり

this idea of countries, of borders, of religion -- doesn't work.

国や境界線 宗教といった考え方が 意味を成さなくなる

We're all really made up of the same stuff, in the same box.

僕らは同じ箱の中で 同じ物からできてるんだ

And if we don't start exchanging that stuff sweetly and nicely,

もしそれらを上手に 交換しあうようにならなかったら

we're all going to die real soon.

あっという間に 皆 死んじゃうよ
