This is an ode to the mother goddess,

यह माता देवी की स्तुति है|

that most of us in India learn when we are children.

इसे बचपन में ही बच्चे सिखते है|

I learned it when I was four

मैंने इसे चार साल की आयु में सिखी.

at my mother's knee.

माँ की गोद मे बैठकर|

That year she introduced me to dance,

उसने मुझे नृत्य से परिचित किया|

and thus began

इसके बाद शुरू हुआ

my tryst with classical dance.

मेरे शास्त्रीय संगीत का प्रवास

Since then -- it's been four decades now --

अब चार दशक बीत चुके हैं|

I've trained with the best in the field,

नृत्य की बेहतरीन शिक्षा मैने हासील की|

performed across the globe,

पुरे विश्व में मेरे नृत्य प्रदर्शन हुये|

taught young and old alike,

बच्चो से वयोस्को तक समान रुप से सिखाये|

created, collaborated,

क्लासिकल नृत्य प्रसार मे मेरा योगदान है|

choreographed,

नृत्य निर्देशन किया|कलाकौशल्य, उपलब्धी

and wove a rich tapestry

और पुरस्कारों का एक वस्त्र बुना|

of artistry, achievement and awards.

२००७ मैं अपने शिखर पर थी|

The crowning glory was in 2007,

राष्ट्र का चौथा सर्वोत्तम पुरस्कार

when I received this country's

याने पद्मश्री मुझे मिला|

fourth highest civilian award, the Padma Shri,

मेरे कला क्षेत्र के योगदान स्वरूप|

for my contribution to art.

लेकीन यह सुनने के लिये

But nothing, nothing prepared me

मै बिलकुल तैयार नही थी|

for what I was to hear

२००८ में पहले ही दिन,

on the first of July 2008.

मैंने सुना वह शब्द "कार्सिनोमा"

I heard the word "carcinoma."

जी हाँ स्तन कर्करोग|

Yes, breast cancer.

हताश होकर मैं डॉक्टर के कार्यालय में बैठी थी|

As I sat dumbstruck in my doctor's office,

मैंने सुना:

I heard other words:

"कैंसर " ",स्टेज ", "ग्रेड"

"cancer," "stage," "grade."

तब तक मैं कैंसर एक राशी का नाम मानती थी|

Until then, Cancer was the zodiac

जोकि मेरा एक दोस्त थी उस राशी की|

sign of my friend,

मेरे लिए स्टेज शब्द का मतलब नृत्यमंच था|

stage was what I performed on,

ग्रेड का मतलब था शालेय विषयो मे प्रावीण्यता|

and grades were what I got in school.

उस दिन मैंने जाना,

That day, I realized

मेरे पास एक अनचाहा आगंतुक है

I had an unwelcome, uninvited,

मेरा नया जोड़ीदार,

new life partner.

मैं नर्तिका होने के नाते|

As a dancer,

नवरस जानती थी|

I know the nine rasas or the navarasas:

राग. शौर्य,

anger, valor,

घृणा, हास्य

disgust, humor

भय

and fear.

मैं सोचती थी कि मैं जानती हूँ डर क्या है|

I thought I knew what fear was.

लेकिन डर का अहसास उस दिन मुझे हुआ|

That day, I learned what fear was.

मैं उसके उग्र रूप से भयभीत हु|

Overcome with the enormity of it all

मैं सारा नियंत्रण खो बैठी|

and the complete feeling of loss of control,

मैं बहुत रोई उस दिन|

I shed copious tears

जयंत मेरे पति से पूछा,

and asked my dear husband, Jayant.

"क्या यह मेरे जिन्दगी का आखरी पड़ाव है| "

I said, "Is this it? Is this the end of the road?

क्या यह मेरे नृत्य का अंत है? "

Is this the end of my dance?"

धीरज और विश्वास से उसने कहा

And he, the positive soul that he is,

"नही यह केवल एक कालखंड है| "

said, "No, this is just a hiatus,

उपचार के दौरान एक अंतराल,

a hiatus during the treatment,

"आप जो भी कर रहे हैं वह करने के लिए आप वापस आ जाएंगे"

and you'll get back to doing what you do best."

मुझे तब एहसास हुआ,

I realized then

सोचती थी मेरा जीवन पर पूर्ण नियंत्रण है|

that I, who thought I had complete control of my life,

केवल तीन चीजों का

had control of only three things:

मेरा विचार, मेरा दिमाग -

My thought, my mind --

वे छवियां जो इन विचारों को बनाई गईं -

the images that these thoughts created --

और उस से प्राप्त की गई कार्रवाई.

and the action that derived from it.

तो यहां मैं मजे से थी|

So here I was wallowing

भावनाओं के भंवर में

in a vortex of emotions

निराशा विमनस्क अवस्था में

and depression and what have you,

परिस्थिति से जकड़ी|

with the enormity of the situation,

मैं रास्ता खोजती थी, स्वास्थ, समाधान का,

wanting to go to a place of healing, health and happiness.

यहाँ से मुझे निकलना था|

I wanted to go from where I was

जाना था जहाँ मैं जाना चाहती थी|

to where I wanted to be,

खोज रही थी ....... ऐसा कुछ मिले|

for which I needed something.

जो मुझे इस दुरावस्था से बाहर निकाल सके.

I needed something that would pull me out of all this.

मैने आसू पोछे. रोना बंद किया|

So I dried my tears,

मैने दुनिया को बताया.....

and I declared to the world at large ...

" कर्करोग मेरे जीवन की किताब का केवल एक पन्ना है|

I said, "Cancer's only one page in my life,

जिसका प्रभाव मैं बाकी जीवन में नही पड़ने दुंगी"

and I will not allow this page to impact the rest of my life."

मैने दुनिया को अवगत किया,

I also declared to the world at large

मै लड़ती रहूंगी विजय प्राप्तीतक

that I would ride it out,

कर्करोग को नही हावी होने दूंगी|

and I would not allow cancer to ride me.

मुझे यहाँ से जाकर

But to go from where I was

इस आज की अवस्था पर आना था.

to where I wanted to be,

मुझे इसके मार्ग की तलाश थी|

I needed something.

चाहती थी धीरज देनेवाला एक आश्वासक मिले,

I needed an anchor, an image,

एक आधार,

a peg

एक कार्य प्रणाली जो मूझे मदद करे

to peg this process on,

जिसके द्वारा मै विजय हासील कर सकू|

so that I could go from there.

मुझे साक्षात्कार हुआ,

And I found that in my dance,

यह शक्ति है मेरे नृत्य मे है

my dance, my strength, my energy, my passion,

मेरा नृत्य जो

my very life breath.

जीने का श्वास है|

But it wasn't easy.

यह आसान नही था|

Believe me, it definitely wasn't easy.

बिलकुल भी नही. आप भरोसा करें|

How do you keep cheer

कैसे आप खुशाल रहे|

when you go from beautiful

जब आप अपने सुंदर केश खो दे|

to bald in three days?

वो भी केवल तीन दिन में,

How do you not despair

क्या आप नही निराश होंगे ?

when, with the body ravaged by chemotherapy,

जब केमोथेरपी आपके शरीर को ध्वस्त कर दे.

climbing a mere flight of stairs was sheer torture,

आप असमर्थ रहे एक कदम भी सीढ़ी पर न चढ सके|

that to someone like me who could dance for three hours?

मैं जो लगातार तीन घंटे नृत्य करती थी|

How do you not get overwhelmed

कैसे नही

by the despair and the misery of it all?

मैं अवसाद, दुर्दशा की शिकार बनती ?

All I wanted to do was curl up and weep.

क्या मैं रोती रहू आसू बहाती रहू?

But I kept telling myself fear and tears

भय. रोना उचित नही मैं खुद को समझाती रही|

are options I did not have.

यह रास्ता मेरे लिये नही है|

So I would drag myself into my dance studio --

मैं नृत्यशाला में खिचती गयी|

body, mind and spirit -- every day into my dance studio,

शरीर, मन आत्मा से,

and learn everything I learned

मै सिखने लगी फिरसे चार साल की आयु में

when I was four, all over again,

जहाँ से मैने शुरुवात की थी|

reworked, relearned, regrouped.

मैने अभ्यास किया, तालीम की, पुर्नरचना की|

It was excruciatingly painful, but I did it.

यह तकलीफ देने वाला दर्द देने वाला अहसास था|

Difficult.

बहुत ही प्रयासभरा ,दुष्कर

I focused on my mudras,

मैने अवधान केंद्रित किया|

on the imagery of my dance,

नृत्य मुद्रा पर, नृत्य प्रतिमा पर.

on the poetry and the metaphor

काव्य, रूपक पर.

and the philosophy of the dance itself.

नृत्य के तत्वज्ञान पर.

And slowly, I moved out

मैं बाहर निकलने लगी,

of that miserable state of mind.

धीरे धीरे उस दुरावास्था से मैं बाहर आयी|

But I needed something else.

लेकीन मुझे फिर भी तलाश थी.

I needed something to go that extra mile,

अगले पडाव की, मैं रास्ता खोज रही थी

and I found it in that metaphor

जो मिला मुझे एक रुपकसे|

which I had learned from my mother when I was four.

जो मेरी मा ने मुझे सिखाया था|

The metaphor of Mahishasura Mardhini,

रूपक था महिषासुर मर्दिनी,

of Durga.

दुर्गामाता

Durga, the mother goddess, the fearless one,

दुर्गा, देवो की जननी, एक निर्भयदेवी,

created by the pantheon of Hindu gods.

एक हिंदू देवता,

Durga, resplendent, bedecked, beautiful,

दुर्गा, तेजस्वी, सुंदर,

her 18 arms

अठरा हातोवाली मा.

ready for warfare,

युद्ध सज्ज,

as she rode astride her lion

शेरपर विराजमान,

into the battlefield to destroy Mahishasur.

युद्धभूमीपर महिषासुर, का वध करने के लिये सज्ज

Durga, the epitome

दुर्गा, संक्षिप्त रूप है|

of creative feminine energy,

सर्जनशील स्त्रीउर्जेचे,

or shakti.

स्त्री शक्तिका आविष्कार

Durga, the fearless one.

दुर्गा, एक निर्भयता का प्रतिक है|

I made that image of Durga

जिसका रूप मै साकारती थी नृत्य मे

and her every attribute, her every nuance,

उसके गुणविशेष.खुबिया

my very own.

जिसका मैने स्वीकार किया था खुदमे

Powered by the symbology of a myth

उसकी प्रतिमाने मुझमे शक्ती प्रदान की|

and the passion of my training,

मेरी लगन नृत्यपर

I brought laser-sharp focus into my dance,

तीक्ष्ण प्रकाश किरणों जैसे केंद्रित हो गयी.

laser-sharp focus to such an extent

उसका असार इतना था की

that I danced a few weeks after surgery.

एक हि सप्ताह मे मै नृत्य करने लगी|

I danced through chemo and radiation cycles,

केमो थेरेपी. रेडीएशन के दरम्यान भी मै नृत्य करती रही|

much to the dismay of my oncologist.

मेरे चिकित्सक नाराज रहते थे|

I danced between chemo and radiation cycles

केमी के दो उपचार का समय

and badgered him to fit it

और मेरे नृत्य का समय का समायोजन करने

to my performing dance schedule.

मै उनके पीछे पड जाती|

What I had done

क्या किया मैने

is I had tuned out of cancer

मै कर्करोग के भय से मुक्त होती गयी|

and tuned into my dance.

भयमुक्त होकर नृत्य में मैने सूर पाया|

Yes, cancer has just been one page in my life.

सचमुच. कर्करोग एक पन्ना था मेरे जीवन किताब का|

My story

यह मेरी कथा मेरी विजयगाथा है|

is a story of overcoming setbacks,

दुरावस्थासे बाहर आनेकी

obstacles and challenges

कथा है ,मात देने की बाधाओं, चुनौती पर

that life throws at you.

आप भी ऐसे दौर से गुजरे होंगे|

My story is the power of thought.

मेरी कथा है विचारोकी ताकद की|

My story is the power of choice.

मेरी कथा है शक्ती की चुनाव करने की|

It's the power of focus.

अवधान की|

It's the power of bringing ourselves

आप मी भी यह शक्ती है

to the attention of something that so animates you,

यह शक्ती आपको आपके लक्ष्य प्रती जगती है|

so moves you,

इतनी प्रभाशाली है यह शक्ती की|

that something even like cancer becomes insignificant.

कर्करोग भी हर जाता हे|

My story is the power of a metaphor.

यह कथा है रूपक शक्ती की,

It's the power of an image.

प्रतिमाशक्ती की,

Mine was that of Durga,

दुर्गाकी.

Durga the fearless one.

एक निर्भय दुर्गा,

She was also called Simhanandini,

जिसे कहा जाता है सिंहनंदिनी

the one who rode the lion.

सिंह विराजमान.

As I ride out,

ऐसेही मै विराजमान थी|

as I ride my own inner strength,

मेरे अंतर्मन पर,

my own inner resilience,

अंदरकी प्रतिकारशक्ती शक्तीपर,

armed as I am with what medication can provide

जो बन गया है एक शस्त्र एक उपचार|

and continue treatment,

जो अभी भी चल रहा है|

as I ride out into the battlefield of cancer,

इस संघर्ष काल में, मेरी शरीर की कोशियोको

asking my rogue cells to behave,

सबक मिला अनुशासीत हुई|

I want to be known not as a cancer survivor,

मेरी इच्छा है मेरी पहचान कर्करोग से मुक्त व्यक्ती न होकर

but as a cancer conqueror.

कर्करोग को पराजित करने वाली योद्धा हो|

I present to you an excerpt of that work
