The story I wanted to share with you today

आज मैं आप सब के साथ बाँटना चाहती हूँ,

is my challenge as an Iranian artist,

ईरानी कलाकार होने की चुनौती की कहानी,

as an Iranian woman artist,

ईरानी महिला कलाकार होने की चुनौती की कहानी,

as an Iranian woman artist

मैं जो कि एक ईरानी महिला कलाकार हूँ,

living in exile.

और देश-निकाला भुगत रही हूँ।

Well, it has its pluses and minuses.

सोचा जाये तो इसके फ़ायदे हैं और नुकसान भी हैं।

On the dark side,

नकारात्मक पहलू देखें तो

politics doesn't seem to escape people like me.

राजनीति कभी भी हम जैसे लोगों को शांति से नहीं रहने देती।

Every Iranian artist, in one form or another,

हर ईरानी कलाकार, किसी न किसी तरीके से,

is political.

राजनीति से जुडा है।

Politics have defined our lives.

राजनीति ही हमारे जीवन को परिभाषित कर रही है।

If you're living in Iran,

यदि आप ईरान में रह रहे हों,

you're facing censorship, harassment,

तो आपको तमाम सेंसरशिप (नियंत्रण), और अत्याचारों को सहना होगा,

arrest, torture --

गिरफ़्तारी, शारीरिक उत्पीडन --

at times, execution.

और कभी कभी, तो कत्ल या सजा-ए-मौत भी।

If you're living outside like me,

और यदि आप मेरी तरह वहाँ से दूर रह रहे हों,

you're faced with life in exile --

आप के सामने देश-निकाले के जीवन की चुनौती है --

the pain of the longing

दर्द है याद का

and the separation from your loved ones

छटपटाहट है अपनों से दूर होने की

and your family.

परिवार से अलग होने की।

Therefore, we don't find

इसलिये, हम वंचित हैं

the moral, emotional,

उस मौलिक, भावनात्मक,

psychological and political space

मनोवैज्ञानिक और राजनैतिक आराम से,

to distance ourselves from the reality

जो हमें इस सच्चाई से दूर रखे कि

of social responsibility.

हमारी सामाजिक ज़िम्मेदारी बनती है।

Oddly enough,

अजीब सी बात है,

an artist such as myself

मेरे जैसी एक कलाकार

finds herself also in the position of being the voice,

स्वयं को उस किरदार में पाती है, जो आवाज़ है

the speaker of my people,

मेरे देश के लोगों की,

even if I have, indeed,

जबकि, सच में,

no access to my own country.

मेरा अपने देश में जाना तक मना है।

Also, people like myself,

और ये भी, कि मेरे जैसे लोग,

we're fighting two battles on different grounds.

दो अलग अलग लडाइयाँ लड रहे हैं।

We're being critical of the West,

हम पश्चिमी सभ्यता की आलोचना करते हैं,

the perception of the West

विरोध करते है पाश्चात्य नज़रिये का

about our identity --

अपनी पहचान के बारे में --

about the image that is constructed about us,

और उस अक्स का जो हमारे आसपास बना दिया गया है,

about our women, about our politics,

हमारी स्त्रियों के बारे में, हमारी राजनीति के बारे में,

about our religion.

हमारे धर्म के बारे में।

We are there to take pride

तो हम एक तरफ़ इस सब के गर्व की लडाई कर रहे हैं,

and insist on respect.

और सम्मान माँग रहे हैं।

And at the same time,

ठीक उसी समय,

we're fighting another battle.

हम एक और लडाई लड रहे हैं।

That is our regime,

वो है हमारी अपनी शासन पद्धति से,

our government --

हमारी अपनी सरकार से --

our atrocious government,

हमारी अपनी अत्याचारी सरकार से,

[that] has done every crime

जिसने हर सँभव अपराध किया है

in order to stay in power.

सिर्फ़ सत्ता में बने रहने भर के लिये।

Our artists are at risk.

हमारे कलाकार खतरे में हैं।

We are in a position of danger.

हम बडी विपत्ति में फ़ँसे हैं।

We pose a threat

हम खुद भी खतरा बन गये हैं,

to the order of the government.

अपनी ही सरकार और शासन के लिये।

But ironically,

और विडंबना ये है कि,

this situation

इस स्थिति ने

has empowered all of us,

हमें शक्ति दी है,

because we are considered, as artists,

क्योंकि हमें, कलाकार होने के नाते,

central to the cultural, political,

ज़रूरी माना जाता है सांस्कृतिक, राजनैतिक,

social discourse in Iran.

और सामाजिक विमर्श के लिये, ईरान में।

We are there to inspire, to provoke,

हमारा काम हो गया है प्रोत्साहित करना, ललकारना,

to mobilize,

बढावा देना,

to bring hope to our people.

और अपने लोगों तक आशा की किरणों को पहुँचाना।

We are the reporters of our people,

हम अपने लोगों के हाल बयां करने के ज़िम्मेदार हैं,

and are communicators

हम उनके संवाददाता हैं

to the outside world.

बाहरी दुनिया के लिये।

Art is our weapon.

कला हमारा हथियार है।

Culture is a form of resistance.

संस्कृति हमारे विरोध का ज़रिया है।

I envy sometimes the artists of the West

कभी कभी तो मुझे पाश्चात्य कलाकारों से जलन सी होती है

for their freedom of expression.

उनकी अभिव्यक्ति की आज़ादी को देख कर --

For the fact that they can distance themselves

और इस बात पर कि कैसे वो खुद को दूर कर लेते हैं

from the question of politics.

राजनैतिक सवालात से --

From the fact that they are only serving one audience,

और इस बात से कि वो केवल एक ही तरह के लोगों के लिये कार्यरत हैं,

mainly the Western culture.

मु्ख्यतः पाश्चात्य सांस्कृति के लिये।

But also, I worry about the West,

पर साथ ही, मैं पश्चिम को ले कर चिंतित भी हूँ,

because often in this country,

क्योंकि अक्सर इन देशों मे,

in this Western world that we have,

इस पाश्चात्य विश्व में खतरा दिखता है,

culture risks being a form of entertainment.

संस्कृति के मात्र मनोरंजन में बदल कर रह जाने का।

Our people depend on our artists,

हमारे लोग अपने कलाकारों पर निर्भर हैं,

and culture is beyond communication.

और संस्कृति तो संवाद के परे है।

My journey as an artist

एक कलाकार के रूप में मेरी यात्रा

started from a very, very personal place.

बहुत ही व्यक्तिगत जगह से आरंभ हुई थी।

I did not start

मैने सीधे शुरु नहीं किया था

to make social commentary

सामाजिक टिप्पणी करना

about my country.

अपने देश पर।

The first one that you see in front of you

जो पहला वाला आप देख रहे हैं

is actually when I first returned to Iran

ये असल में मैनें ईरान लौट कर बनाया था

after being separated for a good 12 years.

पूरे १२ साल इस से अलग रहने के बाद।

It was after the Islamic Revolution

ये इस्लामिक क्रांति के बाद हुआ,

of 1979.

जो १९७९ में हुई थी।

While I was absent from Iran,

जब मैं ईरान से बाहर थी,

the Islamic Revolution had descended on Iran

ईरान में इस्लामिक क्रांति आ गयी

and had entirely transformed the country

और उसने पूरे देश को बदल कर रख दिया

from Persian to the Islamic culture.

फ़ारसी संस्कृति से इस्लामिक संस्कृति में।

I came mainly to be reunited with my family

मैं तो बस अपने परिवार के साथ रहने आयी थी,

and to reconnect in a way

और फ़िर से इस तरह से जुडने

that I found my place in the society.

कि मैं समाज में अपना एक स्थान पा सकूँ।

But instead, I found a country

बजाय उसके, मुझे एक ऐसा देश मिला

that was totally ideological

जो पूर्णतः एक खास सिद्धांत से चल रहा था

and that I didn't recognize anymore.

और जिसे मैं अपना ही नहीं पायी।

More so, I became very interested,

और तो और, मेरी इसमें बहुत रुचि पैदा होती गयी

as I was facing

क्योंकि मेरे सामने

my own personal dilemmas and questions,

अपने व्यक्तिगत असमंजस और प्रश्न खडे थे,

I became immersed in the study

मेरी रुचि बढती ही गयी

of the Islamic Revolution --

इस्लामिक क्रांति के अध्ययन में --

how, indeed,

कि कैसे, असल में,

it had incredibly transformed

इस ने अविश्वसनीय ढँग से बदल दिया

the lives of Iranian women.

ईरानी औरतों के जीवन को।

I found the subject of Iranian women

मुझे ईरानी स्त्रियों का विषय

immensely interesting,

बहुत ही तेजी से खींच रहा था,

in the way the women of Iran, historically,

कि किस तरह से ईरानी औरतों ने, इतिहास में,

seemed to embody the political transformation.

राजनैतिक बदलाव को अपनाया है।

So in a way, by studying a woman,

तो एक तरह से, औरतों का अध्ययन करके,

you can read the structure and the ideology of the country.

आप एक देश के ढाँचे और सिद्धांत को पढ सकते हैं।

So I made a group of work

तो मैनें कुछ काम किया

that at once faced my own personal questions in life,

जिस से कि अचानक ही मेरे सारी दुविधा सामने आ गयी,

and yet it brought my work into a larger discourse --

और उसने मेरे काम को एक बडे विमर्श के कटघरे में ला खडा किया --

the subject of martyrdom,

शहादत के विषय पर,

the question of those who willingly stand in that intersection

उन लोगों के विषय पर जो अपनी मर्ज़ी से दुराहे पर खडे होते हैं

of love of God, faith,

एक तरफ़ ईश्वर से प्रेम, और विश्वास की राह पर,

but violence and crime and cruelty.

और साथ ही हिंसा, अपराध और क्रूरता की राह पर।

For me, this became incredibly important.

मेरे लिये ये अत्यधिक महत्वपूर्ण हो गया।

And yet, I had an unusual position toward this.

और तब भी, मेरी इस पर थोडी अलग स्थिति थी।

I was an outsider

मैं एक बाहरी व्यक्ति थी

who had come back to Iran to find my place,

जो कि ईरान आयी थी अपनी जगह खोजती हुई,

but I was not in a position

मगर मैं इस स्थिति में नहीं थी कि

to be critical of the government

मैं सरकार की आलोचना कर सकूँ

or the ideology of the Islamic Revolution.

या फ़िर इस्लामिक क्रांति के सिद्धांतो की।

This changed slowly

धीरे धीरे ये सब बदला

as I found my voice

और मुझे अपनी आवाज मिली

and I discovered things

और मैने उन चीज़ों को खोज़ा

that I didn't know I would discover.

जो मुझे कभी नहीं लगा था कि मैं खोज पाऊँगी।

So my art became slightly more critical.

और मेरी कला थोडी और ज्यादा आलोचनात्मक हो गयी।

My knife became a little sharper.

मेरा खंज़र थोडा और तीखा हो गया।

And I fell into a life in exile.

और मैं फ़िर से देश-निकाले का जीवन जीने पर मजबूर कर दी गयी।

I am a nomadic artist.

अब मैं एक खानाबदोश कलाकार हूँ।

I work in Morocco, in Turkey, in Mexico.

मैं मोरक्को में, तुर्की में, मेक्सिको में काम करती हूँ।

I go everywhere to make believe it's Iran.

मै हर जगह में ईरान को खोजती फ़िरती हूँ।

Now I am making films.

अब मैं फ़िल्मों पर भी काम कर रही हूँ।

Last year, I finished a film

पिछले साल, मैने एक फ़िल्म ख्त्म की है

called "Women Without Men."

जिसका शीर्षक है "आदमियों बगैर औरतें"

"Women Without Men" returns to history,

ये फ़िल्म इतिहास में वापस जाती है,

but another part of our Iranian history.

मगर ईरानी इतिहास के एक दूसरे ही हिस्से में।

It goes to 1953

ये जाती १९५३ तक

when American CIA exercised a coup

जब कि अमरीकी सी.आई.ए. ने तख्तापलट करवाया था

and removed a democratically elected leader,

और लोकतंत्र द्वारा चुने गये एक राजनीतिक नेता को हटवा दिया था,

Dr. Mossadegh.

The book is written by an Iranian woman,

ये किताब एक ईरानी औरत ने लिखी है,

Shahrnush Parsipur.

शाहर्मुश पारसिपुर

It's a magical realist novel.

ये जादुई सी किताब यथार्थवादी उपन्यास है।

This book is banned,

इस किताब पर सरकारी रोक है,

and she spent five years in prison.

और उस लेखिका ने अपने पाँच साल जेल में बिताये।

My obsession with this book,

मैं इस किताब के लिये पागल हूँ,

and the reason I made this into a film,

और मेरे इस किताब को फ़िल्म में तब्दील करने का कारण है

is because it at once was addressing

इसका एक साथ कई प्रश्नों को कुरेद पाना।

the question of being a female --

औरत होने का प्रश्न --

traditionally, historically in Iran --

पारंपरिक रूप से, ऐतिहासिक रूप से ईरानी औरत होना --

and the question of four women

और चार ऐसी औरतों का स्थिति

who are all looking for an idea

जो एक नयी विचारधारा की खोज में हैं --

of change, freedom and democracy --

बदलाव की, आजादी की, और प्रजातंत्र की --

while the country of Iran, equally, as if another character,

जबकि ईरान देश, साथ, एक और किरदार के रूप में,

also struggled for an idea

एक नयी विचारधारा की तलाश में है -

of freedom and democracy

प्रजातंत्र और आजादी की,

and independence from the foreign interventions.

और विदेशियों द्वारा दखलअंदाजी से आजादी पाने की।

I made this film

मैने ये फ़िल्म बनायी

because I felt it's important

क्योंकि मुझे लगा कि ये ज़रूरी है

for it to speak to the Westerners

कि ये पश्चिमी लोगों को बताये

about our history as a country.

कि एक देश के रूप में हमारा इतिहास कैसा था।

That all of you seem to remember Iran

ये कि आप सब केवल उस ईरान को याद रख के बैठे हैं

after the Islamic Revolution.

जो कि इस्लामिक क्रांति के बाद का ईरान है।

That Iran was once a secular society,

ये कि ईरान एक ज़माने में धर्मनिरपेक्ष समाज था,

and we had democracy,

और हमारा देश लोकतांत्रिक था,

and this democracy was stolen from us

और हमसे इस प्रजातंत्र को छीन लिया

by the American government,

अमरीकी सरकार ने,

by the British government.

ब्रिटिश सरकार ने।

This film also speaks to the Iranian people

ये फ़िल्म ईरानी लोगों से भी कुछ कहती है

in asking them to return to their history

उनसे गुज़ारिश करती है अपने इतिहास में वापस जाने की

and look at themselves before they were so Islamicized --

और इस्लामीकरण से पहले के अपने व्यक्तित्व को एक नज़र देखने की --

in the way we looked, in the way we played music,

कि हम कैसे दिखते थे, कैसे हम मौसीकी का लुत्फ़ उठाते थे,

in the way we had intellectual life.

कैसे हमारे लोग बुद्धि-विषयक थे।

And most of all,

और सबसे बडी बात,

in the way that we fought for democracy.

कि कैसे हमने प्रजातंत्र के लिये लडाई की थी।

These are some of the shots actually from my film.

ये मेरी फ़िल्म के कुछ दृश्य हैं।

These are some of the images of the coup.

और ये तख्तापलट के कुछ दृश्य हैं।

And we made this film in Casablanca,

हमने ये फ़िल्म कासाब्लान्का (मोरक्को) में बनायी है,

recreating all the shots.

सारे दृश्यों का पुनर्निमाण कर के।

This film tried to find a balance

ये फ़िल्म कोशिश करती है कि एक संतुलन सा कायम हो

between telling a political story,

एक राजनैतिक कहानी कहने के, और

but also a feminine story.

साथ ही, एक स्त्रीवादी कहानी कहने के बीच।

Being a visual artist, indeed,

एक दृश्य कलाकार होने के नाते, सच में,

I am foremost interested to make art --

मैं कला के प्रसारण में सबसे ज्यादा रुचि रखती हूँ --

to make art that transcends

ऐसी कला जो आर पार जा सके

politics, religion,

राजनीति के, धर्म के,

the question of feminism,

स्त्रीवाद के प्रश्नों के,

and become an important, timeless,

और महत्वपूर्ण हो जाये, शाश्वत हो जाये,

universal work of art.

और कला का संपूर्ण सार्वकालिक उदाहरण बन जाये।

The challenge I have

मेरे सामने चुनौती ये है

is how to do that.

कि ये कैसे किया जाये --

How to tell a political story but an allegorical story.

कैसे एक राजनैतिक कहानी कही जाये रूपक व्याकरण में --

How to move you with your emotions,

कैसे अपने भावों को उचित चित्रण किया जाये,

but also make your mind work.

पर साथ ही दिमाग से सोच कर काम हो।

These are some of the images

ये कुछ दृश्य है

and the characters of the film.

और फ़िल्म के कुछ किरदार।

Now comes the green movement --

ये देखिये हरी क्रांति आती हुई --

the summer of 2009,

२००९ की गर्मी,

as my film is released --

और मेरी फ़िल्म का विमोचन होता है --

the uprising begins in the streets of Tehran.

तेहरान की सडको पर विद्रोह भडक रहा है।

What is unbelievably ironic

अविश्वसनीय विडंबना ये है कि

is the period that we tried to depict in the film,

जिस समय की कहानी हमने फ़िल्म में दिखाने की कोशिश की है,

the cry for democracy

प्रजातंत्र की माँग की

and social justice,

और सामाजिक न्याय की माँ की,

repeats itself now

वो स्वयं को दोहरा रहा है

again in Tehran.

तेहरान में।

The green movement

हरी क्रांति ने

significantly inspired the world.

सारी दुनिया को दृढता के साथ प्रोत्साहित किया है।

It brought a lot of attention to all those Iranians

उस के द्वारा उन ईरानियों पर ध्यान केंद्रित हुआ है

who stand for basic human rights

जो कि मौलिक मानवाधिकारों के लिये खडे हैं,

and struggle for democracy.

और प्रजातंत्र की लडाई लड रहे हैं।

What was most significant for me

मेरे लिये इस सब में सबसे सार्थक ये था

was, once again,

कि एक बार फिर,

the presence of the women.

औरतों की मौजूदगी दाखिल हुई है।

They're absolutely inspirational for me.

ये मेरे लिये बहुत ही बडी हौसला-अफ़ज़ाई है।

If in the Islamic Revolution,

अगर इस्लामिक क्रांति के दौरान,

the images of the woman portrayed

औरतों का चित्रण किया गया था

were submissive

दबे कुचले स्वरूप में,

and didn't have a voice,

और बेआवाज़ इकाई की तरह,

now we saw a new idea of feminism

तो आज हम स्त्रीवाद की नयी अभिव्यक्ति देख रहे हैं

in the streets of Tehran --

तेहरान की सडको-गलियों में --

women who were educated,

औरतें जो शिक्षित हैं,

forward thinking, non-traditional,

गैर-पारंपरिक हैं, नयी सोच रखती हैं,

sexually open, fearless

सेक्सुअली खुले विचारों की हैं, डर से परे हैं,

and seriously feminist.

और गंभीर रूप से स्त्रीवादी हैं।

These women and those young men

ये औरतें और ये युवा पुरुष

united Iranians

ईरानियों को एकजुट कर रहे हैं

across the world, inside and outside.

सारे संसार में ईरान में और बाहर भी।

I then discovered

और फ़िर मुझे पता लगा

why I take so much inspiration

कि आखिर क्यों मै इतना उत्साह पाती हूँ

from Iranian women.

ईरानी औरतों से।

That, under all circumstances,

वो इसलिये, कि हर हाल में,

they have pushed the boundary.

उन्होंने किनारे के लडाई लडी है।

They have confronted the authority.

उन्होनें सत्ता को लगातार ललकारा है।

They have broken every rule

उन्होंने हर थोपा गया नियम तोडा है

in the smallest and the biggest way.

छोटे से छोते और बडे से बडे रूप में।

And once again, they proved themselves.

और एक बार फ़िर, उन्होंने खुद को साबित कर दिखाया है।

I stand here to say

आज मैं यहाँ खडी हूँ ये कहने के लिये

that Iranian women have found a new voice,

कि ईरानी औरतों ने एक नयी आवाज़ पायी है,

and their voice is giving me my voice.

और उनकी आवाज़ ही मुझे अपनी आवाज़ देती है।

And it's a great honor

ये मेरे लिये गौरव की बात है

to be an Iranian woman and an Iranian artist,

कि मैं एक ईरानी स्त्री हूँ, और एक ईरानी कलाकार हूँ,

even if I have to operate in the West only for now.

चाहे मुझे कुछ दिन के लिये पश्चिम को ही अपनी कर्मभूमि क्यों न बनाना पडे।
