It is said that the grass is always greener

گفته میشه که

on the other side of the fence,

مرغ همسایه غازه!

and I believe this is true,

منم اینو قبول دارم

especially when I hear President Obama

مخصوصا وقتی میشنوم که آقای اوباما

often talk about the Korean education system

از سیستم آموزشی کره

as a benchmark of success.

به عنوان یک سیستم موفق یاد میکنه.

Well, I can tell you that,

خوب، راستش باید بگم که،

in the rigid structure and highly competitive nature

توی ساختار انعطاف ناپذیز و بیش از اندازه رقابتی

of the Korean school system,

سیستم آموزشی کره،

also known as pressure cooker,

که بهش فشارپز (زودپز) هم میگن،

not everyone can do well in that environment.

هرکسی نمیتونه تو همچین محیطی خوب عمل کنه.

While many people responded in different ways

اگرچه افراد واکنش های مختلفی

about our education system,

به این سیستم آموزشی داشتند

my response to the high-pressure environment

واکنش من در برابر این محیط پرفشار،

was making bows with pieces of wood

ساختن کمان از تکه های چوبی بود که

found near my apartment building.

نزدیک ساختمانمون پیدا میکردم.

Why bows?

چرا کمان؟

I'm not quite sure.

خودم هم دقیقا نمیدونم چرا!

Perhaps, in the face of constant pressure,

شاید در مواجه شدن با فشارمداوم،

my caveman instinct of survival

غریزه ی بقای من

has connected with the bows.

با کمان ها ارتباط برقرار کرده.

If you think about it,

اگر بهش فکر بکنید

the bow has really helped drive human survival

میبینید که از زمان ماقبل تاریخ

since prehistoric times.

کمان به بقای انسان کمک کرده.

The area within three kilometers of my home

یک محلی تو سه کیلومتری خونه ی ما

used to be a mulberry forest

یه زمانی یه جنگل توت بود،

during the Joseon dynasty,

موقع فرمانروایی جوسن،

where silkworms were fed with mulberry leaves.

و اونجا کرم های ابریشم از برگهای توت تغذیه میکردند.

In order to raise the historical awareness of this fact,

برای بالا بردن آگاهی تاریخی درباره این حقیقت،

the government has planted mulberry trees.

دولت اقدام به کاشتن درخت توت کرده.

The seeds from these trees

بعلاوه بذر این درختان

also have spread by birds here and there

بوسیله پرنده ها به این طرف و اون طرف

nearby the soundproof walls of the city expressway

و نزدیک دیوارهای ضد صدای قطار سریع السیر شهری پخش شدند

that has been built around the 1988 Olympics.

که حدودا در المپیک ۱۹۸۸ ساخته شدند.

The area near these walls,

محوطه نزدیک این دیوارها،

which nobody bothers to pay attention to,

که هیچ کسی به خودش زحمت نمیده که بهش توجه کنه

had been left free from major intervention,

از هرگونه دخالتی به دور بود

and this is where I first found my treasures.

و این جاییه که من اولین بار گنجم رو پیدا کردم.

As I fell deeper into bow making,

وقتی که عمیق تر مشغول کمان سازی شدم

I began to search far and beyond my neighborhood.

دور از محله خودم شروع به گشتن کردم.

When I went on school field trips,

وقتی که به اردوهای مدرسه

family vacations, or simply on my way home

و یا تعطیلات خانوادگی میرفتم، و یا حتی تو راه برگشتم

from extracurricular classes,

از کلاس های فوق العاده به خونه

I wandered around wooded areas

تو نواحی درختی پرسه میزدم

and gathered tree branches

و شاخه های درخت ها رو جمع میکردم

with the tools that I sneaked inside my school bag.

با ابزاری که یواشکی تو کیف مدرسه ام گذاشته بودم.

And they would be somethings like saws, knives,

چیزهایی مثل اره، چاقو،

sickles and axes

داس و تبر

that I covered up with a piece of towel.

که با یه تیکه حوله می پوشوندمشون.

I would bring the branches home,

شاخه هارو میاوردم خونه

riding buses and subways,

توی اتوبوس و مترو

barely holding them in my hands.

دستم میگرفتمشون.

And I did not bring the tools here to Long Beach.

البته وسایلم رو نیاوردم اینجا.

Airport security.

امنیت فرودگاه.

(Laughter)

(خنده)

In the privacy of my room, covered in sawdust,

توی خلوت اتاقم، که از خاک اره پوشیده شده بود،

I would saw, trim and polish wood all night long

تمام طول شب، اره میکشیدم و صیقل میدادم

until a bow took shape.

تا اینکه یه کمان شکل گرفت.

One day, I was changing the shape of a bamboo piece

یه روز داشتم شکل یه تکه بامبو رو عوض میکردم

and ended up setting the place on fire.

که کار به آتش سوزی کشید.

Where? The rooftop of my apartment building,

کجا؟ پشت بوم ساختمونمون

a place where 96 families call home.

جائیکه 96 خانواده بهش میگن خونه!

A customer from a department store across from my building

مشتری یک فروشگاه که روبروی ساختمون بود،

called 911,

به 911 زنگ زد

and I ran downstairs to tell my mom

منم دویدم پایین که به مامانم بگم

with half of my hair burned.

با موهایی که نصفش سوخته بود.

I want to take this opportunity

میخوام از این فرصت استفاده کنم

to tell my mom, in the audience today:

که به مامانم که امروز تو حضار نشسته بگم که:

Mom, I was really sorry,

مامان، من واقعا متاسفم،

and I will be more careful with open fire from now on.

از این به بعد بیشتر مواظب آتیش هستم.

My mother had to do a lot of explaining,

مامانم مجبور شد کلی به مردم توضیح بده

telling people that her son did not commit

که پسرش

a premeditated arson.

عمدا ایجاد حریق نکرده بود.

I also researched extensively on bows around the world.

من کلی تحقیق راجع به کمان در سراسر جهان کردم

In that process, I tried to combine

طی این فرایند، سعی کردم

the different bows from across time and places

کمان های مختلف از لحاظ زمان و مکان را ترکیب کنم

to create the most effective bow.

تا کاراترین کمان را بسازم.

I also worked with many different types of wood,

بعلاوه با انواع مختلف چوب کار کردم

such as maple, yew and mulberry,

مثلا چوب افرا، سرخدار و توت

and did many shooting experiments

و کلی آزمایش پرتاب انجام دادم

in the wooded area near the urban expressway

توی محوطه پوشیده از درخت نزدیک قطار شهری

that I mentioned before.

که قبلا گفتم.

The most effective bow for me

موثرترین کمان برای من

would be like this.

چیزی شبیه اینه.

One: Curved tips can maximize the springiness

نخست: نوک های خمیده میتونند حالت ارتجاعی رو به حداکثر برسونند

when you draw and shoot the arrow.

وقتی که کمان رو می کشید و پرتاب می کنید.

Two: Belly is drawn inward for higher draw weight,

دو: قسمت میانی کمان به سمت داخل کشیده شده

which means more power.

که به معنی قدرت بیشتر است.

Three: Sinew used in the outer layer of the limb

سه: بافت استفاده شده در لایه خارجی طرفین کمان

for maximum tension storage.

باعث حداکثر ذخیره قدرت میشود.

And four: Horn used to store energy in compression.

و چهار: شاخک ها باعث ذخیره انرژی در حلت فشردگی میشوند.

After fixing, breaking, redesigning,

بعد از تعمیرکردن، شکستن، دوباره طراحی کردن،

mending, bending and amending,

مرمت کردن، خم کردن و ترمیم کردن

my ideal bow began to take shape,

کمان ایده ال من شروع به شکل گیری کرد،

and when it was finally done,

و وقتی بالاخره کار تموم شد

it looked like this.

کمان این شکلی شد.

I was so proud of myself

من خیلی به خودم افتخار میکردم

for inventing a perfect bow on my own.

که تونسته بودم به تنهایی یک کمان تمام عیار درست کنم.

and see how my bow resembles them.

Thanks to my ancestors

به لطف نیاکانم

for robbing me of my invention. (Laughter)

من از داشتن یه اختراع محروم شدم!

Through bowmaking,

از طریق ساختن کمان،

I came in contact with part of my heritage.

من با بخشی از میراثم ارتباط برقرار کردم.

Learning the information that has accumulated over time

یاد گرفتن اطلاعاتی که طی سالیان دراز به دست اومده بود

and reading the message left by my ancestors

و خواندن پیامی که از نیاکانم به جا مونده بود

were better than any consolation therapy

بهتر از هر جور روان درمانی

or piece of advice any living adults could give me.

و یا نصیحتی بود که بزرگسالان میتونستند به من بدن.

You see, I searched far and wide,

میدونید من در همه جا جستجو کردم

but never bothered to look close and near.

اما هیچ وقت به خودم زحمت ندادم که دوروبرمو نگاه کنم.

From this realization,

از این درک،

I began to take interest in Korean history,

من کم کم به تاریخ کره علاقه مند شدم

which had never inspired me before.

چیزی که قبلا هیچوقت برام جالب نبود.

In the end, the grass is often greener

در پایان، مرغ من

on my side of the fence,

همیشه غازه!

although we don't realize it.

اگرچه ما هیچوقت اینو نمی فهمیم.

Now, I am going to show you how my bow works.

حالا میخوام بهتون نشون بدم که کمان من چطور کار میکنه.

And let's see how this one works.

و بیاید ببینیم این یکی چطور کار میکنه.

This is a bamboo bow,

این یک کمان بامبوئه

with 45-pound draw weights.

با ۲۰ کیلوگرم وزن کشش.

(Noise of shooting arrow)

A bow may function in a simple mechanism,

یه کمان ممکنه با یه مکانیزم ساده عمل کنه

but in order to make a good bow,

اما برای ساخت یه کمان خوب

a great amount of sensitivity is required.

حساسیت زیادی لازمه.

You need to console and communicate

شما باید با چوب

with the wood material.

ارتباط برقرار کنید.

Each fiber in the wood

هر رشته در چوب

has its own reason and function for being,

دلیلی برای بودنش وعملکردش داره

and only through cooperation and harmony among them

و فقط از طریق همکاری و هماهنگی میان اونهاست

comes a great bow.

که یه کمان خوب بوجود میاد.

I may be an [odd] student

ممکنه من یه دانش آموز (عجیب) باشم

with unconventional interests,

با علایق غیرعادی

but I hope I am making a contribution

اما امیدوارم که تونسته باشم

by sharing my story with all of you.

با به اشتراک گذاشتن داستانم با شما، یه کمکی کرده باشم.

My ideal world is a place

دنیای ایده ال من

where no one is left behind,

جائیه که هیچ کس عقب نمی مونه

where everyone is needed exactly where they are,

و هرکس همونجائیه که بهش نیاز هست

like the fibers and the tendons in a bow,

مثل رشته ها و پی ها توی کمان.

a place where the strong is flexible

جایی که قوی انعطاف پذیره

and the vulnerable is resilient.

و آسیب پذیر سخت کوش

The bow resembles me,

کمان به من شبیه هست

and I resemble the bow.

و من به کمان شبیه هستم.

Now, I am shooting a part of myself to you.

حالا، من دارم بخشی از خودم رو به سمت شما پرتاب میکنم

No, better yet, a part of my mind

نه، بهتره که بگم، بخشی از فکرم

has just been shot over to your mind.

به سمت فکر شما پرتاب شده.
