When I was preparing for this talk,

I went to search for a couple of quotes

دنبال چند نقل قول می گشتم

that I can share with you.

Good news: I found three

خبر خوب: سه تا پیدا کردم

that I particularly liked,

the first by Samuel Johnson, who said,

اولی از ساموئل جانسون، که گفته،

"When making your choice in life,

do not forget to live,"

the second by Aeschylus, who reminded us that

and the third is one by Groucho Marx

Now, bad news:

I didn't know which one of these quotes

to choose and share with you.

The sweet anxiety of choice.

اضطراب دلنشین انتخاب.

In today's times of post-industrial capitalism,

این روزها در دوران سرمایه داری پس از شکوفایی صنعتی،

choice, together with individual freedom

انتخاب، همراه با آزادی فردی

and the idea of self-making,

و ایده خودساخته بودند،

has been elevated to an ideal.

تا حد ایده آل بالا رفته.

Now, together with this, we also have a belief

همراه با این،

in endless progress.

به پیشرفت مداوم هم اعتقاد داریم.

But the underside of this ideology

ولی روی دیگر این ایدئولوژی

has been an increase of anxiety,

افزایش اضطراب،

feelings of guilt,

احساس گناه،

feelings of being inadequate,

احساس کمبود،

feeling that we are failing in our choices.

و این احساس که در انتخاب هامون موفق نیستیم.

Sadly, this ideology of individual choice

متأسفانه، این ایدئولوژی انتخاب فردی

has prevented us from thinking about social changes.

نگذاشته درباره تغییرات اجتماعی فکر کنیم.

It appears that this ideology was actually

به نظر میرسه این ایدئولوژی در واقع

very efficient in pacifying us

در تسلی دادن ما

as political and social thinkers.

به عنوان متفکرین سیاسی و اجتماعی، بسیار مؤثر بوده.

Instead of making social critiques,

ما بجای نقدهای اجتماع کردن،

we are more and more engaging in self-critique,

بیشتر و بیشتر به نقد خود می پردازیم،

sometimes to the point of self-destruction.

گاهی تا حد تخریب خود.

Now, how come that ideology of choice

چرا این ایدئولوژی انتخاب

is still so powerful,

چنین قدرتمنده،

even among people who have

حتی در میان افرادی که

not many things to choose among?

گزینه های زیادی برای انتخاب ندارند؟

How come that even people who are poor

چرا حتی افراد خیلی فقیر هم

very much still identify with the idea of choice,

در برخورد با ایده انتخاب،

the kind of rational idea of choice

دقیقاً همان منطقی رو دنبال می کنند

which we embrace?

که ما دنبال می کنیم؟

Now, the ideology of choice is very successful

ایدئولوژی انتخاب، موفق شده

in opening for us a space to think

فضایی برای ما باز کنه

about some imagined future.

تا درباره یک نوع آینده تخیلی فکر کنیم.

Let me give you an example.

اجازه بدین یه مثال بزنم.

My friend Manya,

دوستم مانیا،

when she was a student at university in California,

وقتی در دانشگاه کالیفرنیا دانشجو بود،

was earning money

برای کسب درآمد

by working for a car dealer.

در یه بنگاه خرید و فروش خودرو کار میکرد.

Now, Manya, when she encountered

مانیا وقتی

the typical customer, would debate with him

به یه مشتری برمیخورد،

about his lifestyle,

درباره روش زندگی اش صحبت میکرد،

how much he wants to spend,

اینکه چقدر میخواد پول خرج کنه،

how many children he has,

چند تا بچه داره،

what does he need the car for?

ماشین رو واسه چی میخواد؟

They would usually come to a good conclusion

اونها معمولاً به نتیجه خوبی

what would be a perfect car.

درباره یه ماشین مناسب میرسیدند.

Now, before Manya's customer would go home

پیش از اینکه مشتری مانیا بره خونه

and think things through,

و تصمیم نهایی رو بگیره،

she would say to him,

بهش میگفت،

"The car that you are buying now is perfect,

"ماشینی که میخوای بخری خیلی خوبه،

but in a few year's time,

ولی در عرض چند سال،

when your kids will be already out of the house,

وقتی بچه هات بزرگ شدن،

when you will have a little bit more money,

وقتی کمی بیشتر پول دار شدی،

that other car will be ideal.

اون یکی ماشین برات بهتر میشه.

But what you are buying now is great."

هر چند همینم که حالا داری میخری عالیه."

Now, the majority of Manya's customers

بیشتر مشتریای مانیا

who came back the next day

وقتی فردا برمیگشتن

bought that other car,

اون یکی ماشین رو میخریدن،

the car they did not need,

ماشینی که لازم نداشتن،

the car that cost far too much money.

ماشینی که قیمتش خیلی گرانتر بود.

Now, Manya became so successful in selling cars

مانیا چنان در فروش ماشین موفق شد

that soon she moved on to selling airplanes.

که بعد از مدتی سراغ فروش هواپیما رفت.

(Laughter)

And knowing so much about the psychology of people

و دانش فراوان درباره روانشناسی افراد

prepared her well for her current job,

اونو برای کار فعلیش آماده کرده بود،

which is that of a psychoanalyst.

همون کاری که یه سایکوآنالیست (روانکاو) انجام میده.

Now, why were Manya's customers so irrational?

چرا مشتریان مانیا این چنین غیرمنطقی بودن؟

Manya's success was that she was able

موفقیت مانیا اونجا بود که میتونست

to open in their heads an image

تو ذهن افراد تصویری ایجاد کنه

of an idealized future,

از یه آینده ایده آل،

an image of themselves

تصویری از خودشون

when they are already more successful, freer,

وقتی که موفق تر بودن، آزادتر،

and for them, choosing that other car

و برای اونها، انتخاب اون یکی ماشین

was as if they are coming closer to this ideal

مثل این بود که به این ایده آل نزدیک می شدند

in which it was as if Manya already saw them.

همون ایده آلی که گویا مانیا از قبل می دید.

Now, we rarely make really totally rational choices.

ما به ندرت تصمیم های کاملاً منطقی میگیریم.

Choices are influenced by our unconscious,

انتخابها تحت تأثیر ناخودآگاه ما،

by our community.

و جامعه مون قرار می گیره.

We're often choosing

اغلب برای انتخاب

by guessing, what would other people

حدس میزنیم که دیگران

think about our choice?

درباره انتخاب ما چی فکر می کنند؟

Also we are choosing

هم چنین برای انتخاب

by looking at what others are choosing.

نگاه می کنیم که دیگران چی انتخاب می کنن.

We're also guessing what is socially acceptable choice.

هم چنین حدس میزنیم چه انتخابی از نظر جامعه قابل قبوله.

Now, because of this, we actually

به همین دلیل، ما در واقع

even after we have already chosen,

حتی بعد از اینکه انتخابمون رو انجام دادیم،

like bought a car,

مثلاً ماشین رو خریدیم،

endlessly read reviews about cars,

مدام مطالبی درباره ماشینها میخونیم،

as if we still want to convince ourselves

مثل اینکه هنوز میخوایم خودمون رو قانع کنیم

that we made the right choice.

که انتخابمون درست بوده.

Now, choices are anxiety-provoking.

انتخابها اضطراب زا هستند.

They are linked to risks, losses.

اونها با خطر کردن همراه هستند، با از دست دادن.

They are highly unpredictable.

اونها به شدت غیرقابل پیش بینی هستند.

Now, because of this,

به همین دلیل،

people have now more and more problems

در حال حاضر، مشکلات بیشتر و بیشتری پیش میاد

that they are not choosing anything.

که افراد نمی تونن چیزی انتخاب کنند.

Not long ago, I was at a wedding reception,

در گذشته نه چندان دور، در یه جشن عروسی بودم،

and I met a young, beautiful woman

و زن جوان زیبایی رو دیدم

who immediately started telling me about her anxiety over choice.

که بلافاصله شروع کرد به تعریف درباره اضطراب خودش موقع انتخاب.

She said to me, "I needed one month

او به من گفت،

to decide which dress to wear."

"انتخاب یه لباس واسه خودم یه ماه طول میکشه."

Then she said, "For weeks I was researching

سپس گفت، "هفته ها دنبال این بودم

which hotel to stay for this one night.

که امشب کدوم هتل بمونم.

And now, I need to choose a sperm donor."

و حالا باید یه اهداکننده اسپرم انتخاب کنم."

(Laughter)

I looked at this woman in shock.

در حالت شوک به این خانم نگاه کردم.

"Sperm donor? What's the rush?"

"اهداکننده اسپرم؟ چه عجله ایه؟"

She said, "I'm turning 40 at the end of this year,

او گفت، "انتهای امسال ۴۰ سالم میشه،

and I've been so bad in choosing men in my life."

و در اتنخاب مردها تو زندگیم خیلی بد بودم."

Now choice, because it's linked to risk,

انتخاب، چون همراه با خطره،

is anxiety-provoking,

اضطراب زاست،

and it was already the famous

و قبلاً فیلسوف مشهور دانمارکی

Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard

سورن کی یرکگور

who pointed out that anxiety

گفته که اضطراب

is linked to the possibility of possibility.

ناشی از ممکن بودن ممکنه.

Now, we think today that we can prevent these risks.

امروز فکر می کنیم که می تونیم از این خطر پیشگیری کنیم.

We have endless market analysis,

مدام مشغول بررسی بازار،

projections of the future earnings.

و چشم انداز درآمدهای آینده هستیم.

Even with market, which is about chance,

حتی در بازار، که با شانس،

randomness, we think we can predict rationally

و تصادفی بودن همراهه، فکر می کنیم

where it's going.

قادر به پیش بینی منطقی آینده هستیم.

Now, chance is actually becoming very traumatic.

Last year, my friend Bernard Harcourt

at the University of Chicago organized an event,

در دانشگاه شیکاگو، مراسمی ترتیب داد،

a conference on the idea of chance.

یه کنفرانس با موضوع شانس.

He and I were together on the panel,

هر دومون عضو گردانندگان جلسه بودیم،

and just before delivering our papers —

و تا قبل از ارائه مقاله هامون--

we didn't know each other's papers —

از مقاله های هم خبر نداشتیم--

we decided to take chance seriously.

تصمیم گرفتیم شانس رو جدی بگیریم.

So we informed our audience

پس به حاضرین گفتیم

that what they will just now hear

که چیزی که قراره بشنون

will be a random paper,

یه مقاله ی تصادفیه،

a mixture of the two papers

مخلوطی از دو مقاله

which we didn't know what each was writing.

که هیچ کدوم نمیدونستیم اون یکی چی نوشته.

Now, we delivered the conference in such a way.

سخنرانی ما به همین ترتیب برگزار شد.

Bernard read his first paragraph,

برنارد پاراگراف اول خودشو خوند،

I read my first paragraph,

من پاراگراف اول خودمو خوندم،

Bernard read his second paragraph,

برنارد پاراگراف دوم خودشو خوند،

I read my second paragraph,

من پاراگراف دوم خودمو خوندم،

in this way towards the end of our papers.

به همین ترتیب تا آخر مقاله هامون.

Now, you will be surprised

تعجب می کنید (اگه بدونید)

that a majority of our audience

که بیشتر حاضرین

did not think that what they'd just listened to

فکر نمی کردن چیزی که شنیدن

was a completely random paper.

یه مقاله ی کاملاً تصادفیه.

They couldn't believe that

نمی تونستن باور کنن

speaking from the position of authority

ما که از جایگاه مقتدر

like two professors we were,

دو استاد دانشگاه حرف میزدیم،

we would take chance seriously.

ممکنه شانس رو جدی بگیریم.

They thought we prepared the papers together

فکر میکردن مقاله رو با هم آماده کردیم

and were just joking that it's random.

و درباره تصادفی بودنش شوخی می کنیم.

Now, we live in times with a lot of information,

ما در عصر فراوانی اطلاعات زندگی می کنیم،

big data,

داده های بزرگ،

a lot of knowledge about the insides of our bodies.

دانش فراوان درباره داخل بدنمان.

We decoded our genome.

ما ژنوم خودمون رو رمزگشایی کردیم.

We know about our brains more than before.

درباره مغزهامون بیشتر از قبل میدونیم.

But surprisingly, people are more and more

ولی عجیبه که مردم، بیشتر و بیشتر

turning a blind eye in front of this knowledge.

این دانش رو نادیده میگیرن.

Ignorance and denial are on the rise.

جهل و انکار رو به گسترشه.

Now, in regard to the current economic crisis,

در مورد بحران اقتصادی فعلی،

we think that we will just wake up again

فکر می کنیم روز دوباره بیدار میشیم

and everything will be the same as before,

و همه چیز مثل قبل شده،

and no political or social changes are needed.

و هیچ تغییر سیاسی یا اجتماعی لازم نیست.

In regard to ecological crisis,

در مورد بحران زیست محیطی،

we think nothing needs to be done just now,

فکر می کنیم الان لازم نیست کاری بکنیم،

or others need to act before us.

یا بقیه باید قبل از ما اقدام کنند.

Or even when ecological crisis already happens,

یا حتی زمانی که یه بحران زیست محیطی

like a catastrophe in Fukushima,

مثل فاجعه فوکوشیما اتفاق میفته،

often we have people living in the same environment

اغلب در یه محیط مشابه افرادی داریم

with the same amount of information,

با اطلاعات مشابه،

and half of them will be anxious about radiation

و نصف اونا نگران تشعشعات هستند

and half of them will ignore it.

و نصف بقیه اونو نادیده میگیرند.

Now, psychoanalysts know very well

روانکاوها خوب میدونند

that people surprisingly don't have

که افراد به رغم باور رایج

passion for knowledge

علاقه ای به دونستن ندارند

but passion for ignorance.

و بی اطلاعی رو ترجیح میدند.

Now, what does that mean?

این یعنی چی؟

Let's say when we are facing

مثل اینکه وقتی

a life-threatening illness,

دچار یه بیماری مرگبار میشیم،

a lot of people don't want to know that.

بیشتر افراد دلشون نمیخواد اینو بدونند.

They'd rather prefer denying the illness,

ترجیح میدن بیماری رو انکار کنند،

which is why it's not so wise to inform them

و به همین دلیل عاقلانه نیست

if they don't ask.

اگه خودشون نمی پرسند، بهشون بگیم.

Surprisingly, research shows that sometimes

جالبه که تحقیقات نشون میده

people who deny their illness

گاهی افرادی که بیماری خودشونو انکار می کنند

live longer than those who are rationally choosing

بیشتر از اونایی زنده می مونن که با اطلاع کامل

the best treatment.

بهترین درمان رو انتخاب می کنند.

Now, this ignorance, however,

البته این بی اطلاعی

is not very helpful on the level of the social.

در سطح اجتماعی فایده زیادی نداره.

When we are ignorant about where we are heading,

وقتی نمی دونیم کجا میریم،

a lot of social damage can be caused.

ممکنه آسیبهای اجتماعی زیادی ایجاد بشه.

Now, on top of facing ignorance,

وقتی با بی اطلاعی مواجه میشیم

we are also facing today

این روزها همراه با اون

some kind of an obviousness.

با یه جور بدیهیات نیز مواجه میشیم.

Now, it was French philosopher

یه فیلسوف فرانسوی

Louis Althusser who pointed out

به نام لویی آلتوسر گفته

that ideology functions in such a way

ایدئولوژی طوری عمل می کنه

that it creates a veil of obviousness.

که پوششی از بدیهیات ایجاد می کنه.

Before we do any social critique,

قبل از اینکه یه نقد اجتماعی انجام بدیم،

it is necessary really to lift that veil of obviousness

واقعاً لازمه که این پوشش بدیهیات رو برداریم

and to think through a little bit differently.

و یه کم متفاوت فکر کنیم.

If we go back to this ideology

اگه برگردیم به این ایدئولوژی

of individual, rational choice

انتخاب فردی و منطقی،

we often embrace,

اغلب می بینیم

it's necessary precisely here

که دقیقاً همینجا لازمه

to lift this obviousness

این بدیهیات رو برداریم

and to think a little bit differently.

و کمی متفاوت فکر کنیم.

Now for me, a question often is

برای خودم، اغلب این سؤال پیش میاد

why we still embrace this idea of a self-made man

که چرا همچنان از ایده بشر خودساخته

on which capitalism relied from its beginning?

که سرمایه داری از ابتدا بهش تکیه کرده استقبال می کنیم؟

Why do we think that we are really such masters

چرا فکر می کنیم واقعاً ارباب

of our lives that we can rationally

زندگی خودمون هستیم و به طور منطقی

make the best ideal choices,

میتونیم بهترین ایده آلها رو انتخاب کنیم،

that we don't accept losses and risks?

و شکست و خطر رو قبول نمی کنیم؟

And for me, it's very shocking to see sometimes very poor people,

و من به شدت شوکه میشم وقتی گاهی مثلاً می بینم افراد خیلی فقیر،

for example, not supporting the idea

اینو قبول ندارند

of the rich being taxed more.

که ثروتمندا بیشتر مالیات میدند.

Quite often here they still identify

اینجا اغلب اونها هنوز

with a certain kind of a lottery mentality.

یه جور ذهنیت شبیه بخت آزمایی دارند.

Okay, maybe they don't think that they will make it

خوب، شاید فکر نمی کنند در آینده

in the future, but maybe they think,

ممکنه اوضاع خودشون بهتر بشه، ولی شاید فکر کنند،

my son might become the next Bill Gates.

پسر من ممکنه در آینده بیل گیتس بشه.

And who would want to tax one's son?

و کی ممکنه بخواد از پسر یه نفر مالیات بگیره؟

Or, a question for me is also,

یا سؤال دیگه من اینه

why would people who have no health insurance

که چرا افرادی که هیچ بیمه سلامتی ندارند

not embrace universal healthcare?

از طرح بیمه همگانی استقبال نمی کنند؟

Sometimes they don't embrace it,

گاهی اونو قبول نمی کنند،

again identifying with the idea of choice,

چون دوباره با ایده انتخاب مواجه میشند،

but they have nothing to choose from.

ولی چیزی برای انتخاب وجود نداره.

Now, Margaret Thatcher famously said

معروفه که مارگارت تاچر گفته

that there is nothing like a society.

که چیزی به اسم جامعه نداریم.

Society doesn't exist, it is only individuals

جامعه ای وجود نداره، این فقط افراد هستند

and their families.

و خانواده اونها.

Sadly, this ideology still functions very well,

متأسفانه، هنوز این ایدئولوژی به خوبی کار می کنه،

which is why people who are poor might feel

و به همین دلیل افراد فقیر ممکنه

ashamed for their poverty.

به دلیل فقرشون احساس خجالت کنند.

We might endlessly feel guilty that we are

ممکنه مدام احساس گناه کنیم از اینکه

not making the right choices,

انتخاب درستی انجام ندادیم،

and that's why we didn't succeed.

و به همین دلیل موفق نشدیم.

We are anxious that we are not good enough.

مضطربیم از اینکه به حد کافی خوب نبودیم.

That's why we work very hard,

به همین دلیل،

long hours at the workplace

ساعتهای مدید در محل کارمون به شدت کار می کنیم،

and equally long hours on remaking ourselves.

و همینطور ساعتهای مدید صرف ساختن دوباره خودمون می کنیم.

Now, when we are anxious over choices,

وقتی موقع انتخاب مضطرب میشیم،

sometimes we easily give our power of choice away.

گاهی قدرت انتخاب خودمون رو کاملاً از دست میدیم.

We identify with the guru

یه راهنما پیدا می کنیم

who tells us what to do,

که به ما بگه چی کار کنیم،

self-help therapist,

به یه متخصص خودیاری

or we embrace a totalitarian leader

یا یه رهبر دیکتاتور متوسل میشیم

who appears to have no doubts about choices,

که موقع انتخاب هیچ شکی نداشته باشه،

who sort of knows.

که تقریباً بدونه.

Now, often people ask me,

مردم اغلب ازم میپرسند،

"What did you learn by studying choice?"

"از مطالعه درباره انتخاب چی یاد گرفتی؟"

And there is an important message that I did learn.

و پیام مهمی که یاد گرفتم این هست که

When thinking about choices,

وقتی درباره انتخاب فکر می کنم،

I stopped taking choices too seriously, personally.

شخصاً قضیه رو جدی نمی گیرم.

First, I realized a lot of choice I make

اول می بینم انتخابهای زیادی انجام میدم

is not rational.

که منطقی نیستند.

It's linked to my unconscious,

این مربوط به ناخودآگاه منه،

my guesses of what others are choosing,

اینکه حدس میزنم بقیه چی انتخاب می کنن،

or what is a socially embraced choice.

یا اینکه جامعه از چه انتخابی استقبال می کنه.

I also embrace the idea

از این ایده نیز استقبال می کنم

that we should go beyond

که باید فراتر از

thinking about individual choices,

انتخابهای فردی فکر کنیم،

that it's very important to rethink social choices,

این برای فکر کردن درباره انتخابهای اجتماعی خیلی مهمه،

since this ideology of individual choice has pacified us.

چون ایدئولوژی انتخاب فردی ما رو خاموش کرده.

It really prevented us to think about social change.

نگذاشته واقعا درباره تغییر اجتماعی فکر کنیم.

We spend so much time choosing things for ourselves

این همه وقت میگذاریم تا چیزهایی برای خودمون انتخاب کنیم

and barely reflect on

و به ندرت به فکر

communal choices we can make.

انتخابهای جمعی هستیم که میتونیم انجام بدیم.

Now, we should not forget that choice

نباید فراموش کنیم که انتخاب

is always linked to change.

همیشه با تغییر همراه هست.

We can make individual changes,

میتونیم تغییرات فردی ایجاد کنیم،

but we can make social changes.

ولی قادر به ایجاد تغییرات اجتماعی هم هستیم.

We can choose to have more wolves.

انتخاب ما میتونه این باشه که گرگهای بیشتری داشته باشیم.

We can choose to change our environment

انتخاب ما میتونه این باشه که محیط خودمونو طوری تغییر بدیم

to have more bees.

که زنبورهای بیشتری داشته باشیم.

We can choose to have different rating agencies.

انتخاب ما میتونه این باشه که آژانسهای رتبه بندی مختلفی داشته باشیم.

We can choose to control corporations

انتخاب ما میتونه این باشه که شرکتها رو کنترل کنیم،

instead of allowing corporations to control us.

به جای اینکه اجازه بدیم شرکتها ما رو کنترل کنن.

We have a possibility to make changes.

ممکنه بتونیم تغییراتی ایجاد کنیم.

Now, I started with a quote from Samuel Johnson,

صحبتم رو با نقل قولی از ساموئل جانسون شروع کردم،

who said that when we make choice in life,

که گفته وقتی چیزی رو در زندگی انتخاب می کنیم،

we shouldn't forget to live.

نباید زندگی کردن رو فراموش کنیم.

Finally, you can see

در پایان، می بینید

I did have a choice

که من یه انتخاب داشتم

to choose one of the three quotes

و باید یکی از اون سه نقل قول رو

with which I wanted to start my lecture.

such as nations, as people,

همون طور که ما هم به عنوان ملت ها، به عنوان مردم،

we have choices too to rethink

انتخابهایی داریم که میتونیم درباره اونا فکر کنیم

in what kind of society we want to live in the future.

اینکه میخوایم در آینده در چه جور جامعه ای زندگی کنیم.
